Kate Middleton & Prince William Win Over $100,000 Over Topless Photos

The verdict is in: Two French gossip publications will have to pay up after publishing topless photos of Kate Middleton.

Back in 2012, the French magazine Closer and the local newspaper La Provence published photos taken with with telephoto lenses of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing topless with Prince William at a chateau in France. Closer‘s headline translated to “Oh My God: the photos that will go around the world.” Sure enough, the photos spread to other European publications—despite the couple’s getting an injunction against their further use.

After the photos came out, William and Catherine sued Closer‘s editor and owner and the photographers who took the pictures—who were part of a celebrity photo agency—for violation of privacy. Five years later, they’ve now been awarded 100,000 euros ($118,000) in damages by a French court—significantly less than the 1.5 million euros they asked for.

The Closer executives were each fined 45,000 euros ($53,000)—the maximum fine—and Catherine and William each got 50,000 euros ($59,000) from the executives and photographers.

Closer’s lawyer, Paul-Albert Iweins, argued at a hearing in May that “the public and private lives of the royal couple are so closely linked as to be inseparable” and “it’s of public interest to know that future heirs to the throne have a solid relationship and are getting on well.”

In a letter read by his lawyer during the same hearing, Prince William said the scandal was “particularly shocking because it reminded us of the harassment that led to the death of my mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.” (Princess Diana died in a car accident after her vehicle was chased by photographers in Paris.)

Soon after the photos were published, St. James’s Palace said in a statement that they represented a “grotesque and totally unjustifiable” invasion of privacy. It continued, “The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the Duke and Duchess for being so.”

Prince William Says Princess Kate's Pregnancy With Their Third Child Is 'Very Good News'

After a somewhat rough beginning to Princess Kate‘s third pregnancy, the royals are now properly celebrating the newest addition to the family.

Prince William attended a mental health conference in Oxford on Tuesday, and before speaking about the trauma that can have a serious effect on first responders, he addressed this week’s exciting announcement, People reports.

Despite Kate’s struggles with morning sickness, which she also experienced while pregnant with George, 4, and Charlotte, 2, William said the pregnancy is “very good news,” and added, “There’s not much sleep going on at the moment.” He also noted that although Kate’s first trimester was “a bit anxious to start with,” the family has finally been able to “start celebrating this week.”

The royal family announced the big news on Monday. A statement released by Kensington Palace on Twitter reads, “Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their third child. The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.” Kate’s morning sickness was also mentioned in the statement, as an explanation for her absence at upcoming events: “As with her previous two pregnancies, the Duchess is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum. Her Royal Highness will no longer carry out her planned engagement at the Hornsey Road Children’s Centre in London today. The Duchess is being cared for at Kensington Palace.”

A little brother or sister for George and Charlotte isn’t entirely unexpected. During a trip to Poland earlier this summer, after being gifted a toy for a newborn, Kate reportedly joked, “We will just have to have more babies!” And there’s plenty of room at Kensington Palace, since Prince William and Princess Kate recently added a huge, three-story extension to the royal residence in preparation for their move from Amner Hall to the palace. The renovation proposal claimed that the nearly 5,000-square-foot expansion would “free up the palace suites for the Royal Family” and is “required to allow for the accommodation of administration which must necessarily be moved out of rooms leased from the Royal Household in Kensington Palace.” It would also free up a ton of space for a new nursery and multiple playrooms—just saying.

Meghan Markle Opens Up for the First Time About Prince Harry: 'We're Two People Who Are Really Happy and in Love'

From the moment news broke that Suits actress Meghan Markle was dating Prince Harry, it’s been a non-stop media frenzy around the two. In fact, the negative headlines—many of which were racist about the fact that Meghan is biracial—and constant paparazzi presence got so bad that Harry had to issue a statement asking everyone to back off. (They didn’t.)

Through all of this, though, Meghan has stayed silent on how she’s been dealing with her increased fame—until now, that is. In a new cover interview with Vanity Fair, the actress opened up about the pressure that comes with dating a royal and how they’re getting through it together. “It has its challenges, and it comes in waves—some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she explains. “And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”

But how do they make it work when their every move is followed and documented? “I can tell you that at the end of the day I think it’s really simple,” she says. “We’re two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

Still, there’s another way Meghan avoids the media attention: by not reading any articles about her or Harry. “I haven’t even read press for Suits,” she explains. “The people who are close to me anchor me in knowing who I am. The rest is noise.”

With that noise in the background, the only thing that really matters for Meghan is focusing on her and Harry’s relationship. “We’re a couple,” she explains. “We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”

Prince William Addresses Princess Diana's Bulimia for the First Time

Prince William and Prince Harry have continued their late mother’s efforts to destigmatize mental health issues in recent years. And now, for the first time, Will is addressing Princess Diana’s own struggles with low self-esteem and a subsequent eating disorder.

In a new documentary from British broadcaster Channel Four entitled Wasting Away: The Truth About Anorexia, William discusses the importance of speaking openly about eating disorders and other issues of mental health with Mark Austin, a former anchor for a British news network, and Austin’s daughter Maddie, who is battling anorexia. According to British Vogue, Will acknowledged the Austin family’s bravery for opening up about Maddy’s struggles. “We need to normalize the conversation about mental health. The fact that you are speaking out is incredibly brave,” he said. When asked by Austin whether he’s proud of his mother for speaking out about her struggles, William said, “Absolutely. These are illnesses. Mental health needs to be taken as seriously as physical health.”

In a bombshell 1995 interview, Diana told the BBC’s Martin Bashir how her tumultuous marriage to and divorce from Prince Charles had affected her self-confidence and mental health. “I didn’t like myself, I was ashamed because I couldn’t cope with the pressures,” Lady Di said. “I had bulimia for a number of years, and that’s like a secret disease…It’s a repetitive pattern which is very destructive to yourself.” She continued, “It was a symptom of what was going on in my marriage. I was crying out for help, but giving the wrong signals, and people were using my bulimia as a coat on a hanger: They decided that was the problem—Diana was unstable.”

Prince William, Princess Kate, and Prince Harry started the Heads Together campaign in 2016 to bolster other charities’ efforts in “tackling stigma, raising awareness, and providing vital help for people with mental health challenges,” according to the campaign’s website. Since then, the three have spoken openly about issues of mental health. Most recently, Harry was featured on the Telegraph‘s Mad World podcast, where he revealed his own struggles with depression following his mother’s 1997 death.

“I can safely say that losing my mum at the age of 12, and therefore shutting down all of my emotions for the last 20 years, has had a quite serious effect on not only my personal life but my work as well,” he said. “I have probably been very close to a complete breakdown on numerous occasions when all sorts of grief and sort of lies and misconceptions and everything are coming to you from every angle.” He continued, “My way of dealing with it was sticking my head in the sand, refusing to ever think about my mum, because why would that help? [I thought] it’s only going to make you sad, it’s not going to bring her back. So from an emotional side, I was like, ‘Right, don’t ever let your emotions be part of anything.'”

Harry revealed that William encouraged him to seek consistent therapy; since doing so, he has been in a much better place. “Because of the process I have been through over the past two and a half years, I’ve now been able to take my work seriously, been able to take my private life seriously as well, and been able to put blood, sweat and tears into the things that really make a difference and things that I think will make a difference to everybody else,” he said.
