Why Meghan Markle (Probably) Won't Be Sharing Prince Harry's Royal Fortune

The upcoming royal wedding between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is about to make the United Kingdom an insane amount of money. Their marriage is expected to boost the economy by $680 million thanks to related tourism and T-shirt sales. And while the U.K. will have a lot to thank the soon-to-be royal couple for, Markle will be dealing with some much less fun financial conundrums. Specifically, her United States taxes (and you thought doing yours was annoying).

Although Markle plans to become a U.K. citizen, the process will take approximately three years, during which time Markle will remain a U.S. citizen. Why is this important? Royal expert Marlene Koenig told The Sun, that “Even when married to a member of the British royal family, as long as she remains a U.S. citizen she will have to pay income tax.”

Though Markle has wealth of her own (much of which comes from her role on Suits) that she’ll pay taxes on, she’s also about to marry into a family with a very large fortune. Prince Harry received half of his mother’s £21.5 million (about $29.2 million) estate when she died, and he shares a £3.5 million (about $4.7 million) annual allowance with his brother and sister-in-law, William and Kate. And that’s not to mention the rest of royal family’s worth.

If Markle receives any of her new family’s money, she’ll be at risk of paying income tax on it. “If she receives money from her husband or his family, and that’s considered income, she would have to pay income tax on that,” Koenig explained.

This poses an issue for the royal family, since Markle could have to reveal details of foreign trusts and the worth of the royals’ estate which has remained undisclosed.

“With that sort of money, if Meghan’s name is on that account, most likely she would be dinged—that would have to be reported as income in the United States. You can be sure that those at Buckingham Palace and those who run the accounts are looking very carefully at all of this to make sure that the royal family’s money does not get reported to the IRS,” Koenig said.

While planning her wedding much feel like a fairytale, this part is a royal pain in the you-know-what.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Flew Coach on Their Flight to France

Let’s just be honest: One of the perks of marrying into the Royal Family is the luxury. The second you say “I do” to a royal, your life becomes instantly more glamorous, more fabulous—just more everything. That’s why the world is pretty jealous of Meghan Markle right now. The Suits actress and Prince Harry announced their engagement in late November, and their lives have been a swirl of photo ops, chic outfits, and even chicer trips ever since. And there’s no end in sight, either. Like, this is going to be Markle’s life forever: sipping tea with the queen, wearing designer outfits that sell out in minutes, and access to the best of everything. It’s just standard procedure—royal protocol, if you will.

Which is why the way Markle and Prince Harry traveled on their recent flight to France is pretty, uh, surprising. The couple decided to spend New Year’s Eve on the French Riviera, and they flew coach class to get there. In fact, they were seated next to toilets. The horror, am I right?

According to The Daily Mail, Markle and Prince Harry boarded their 9:55 A.M. flight to the French Riviera before the other passengers and went straight to the back of the plane, where they had three rows of seats—on both sides—to themselves. Well, them and three bodyguards, of course. They are royalty, after all.

Even still, six rows of seats for five people? That’s pretty luxe—even if it is an economy flight. Something tells me Prince Harry and Markle were more than comfortable on their trip, though. People were probably too starstruck to go to the bathroom, anyway.

Here’s to more relatable royal moments in 2018. They will certainly balance out the lavish wedding happening in just a few months.

6 of the Most Bromantic Moments From Prince Harry and Barack Obama's BBC Interview

2017 might have been a garbage, dumpster-fire year (onward, 2018!), but if there were any bright moments, they came when bromancers-in-chief Prince Harry and Barack Obama got together—meetings that caused a spring-like warmth to creep through the chill of the encroaching nuclear winter. And on Wednesday, we were treated to one last 2017 meeting of the world leaders when guest editor Prince Harry sat Obama down for a BBC Radio 4 interview for the ages. “When Harry Met Barry!” the New York Times proclaimed, minus the obviously implied exclamation mark, and to be honest, we can’t say it any better ourselves. Behold, beloveds, six of the most adorable moments from this power couple’s tête-à-tête.

1. When Harry was trying to find people to appear on his edit of the “Today” program, and Obama was like, there for it. According to the Telegraph, when Harry was recruiting people to come on the show, Obama was “the ‘easiest'” guest to get a response from.
2. When they had themselves a cute quickfire round, and Harry asked Obama if he preferred “The Good Wife” or “Suits” (which his fiancée Meghan Markle starred in), and Obama answered “Suits” because of course he did, and Harry just replied, “Great, great answer,” probably blushing like a schoolboy (we imagine).
3. When Obama admitted he’d totally trust Harry’s movie judgement, which is a Big Deal. During the aforementioned quickfire round, Harry asked Obama to choose between White House Down or Olympus Has Fallen, and Obama was all, “I haven’t seen either of them.” So Harry promptly chose White House Down, and Obama said, “OK, I’ll take your word for it.” Then he fist-bumped Harry and asked when the prince wanted to bro out and watch it in the White House cinema and oh wait…?
4. When Obama banged on about Michelle to Harry like a lad. Tricky Harry tried to get Obama to shade President Donald Trump a little bit, but Obama, like the lawyer he is, flipped the question on its head and proceeded to gush about the former FLOTUS instead. Harry asked Barack what was going through his mind when the former First Family flew away from the White House after Trump’s inauguration. Obama smartly expressed gratitude for having Michelle as a partner during his time in politics. “She is a spectacular, funny, warm person. She’s not someone who was naturally inclined at politics,” he said, adding that he felt “a satisfying feeling that was mixed with all the work that was still undone.”
5. When Obama tried to speak Harry’s language and talked about “going to the pub.” Silly Obama—we call them “bars” in America! (But we see what you’re doing.) To be fair, Obama was raising a serious point about the tendency toward isolation that social media creates: “I think social media is a really powerful tool for people of common interests to convene and get to know each other and connect but then it is important for them to get offline, meet in the pub,” he said.
6. When Harry was playing hard to get about Obama’s invite to his upcoming wedding. Sure, inviting Obama and not the Trumps could touch off an international incident, but what’s that between bros, eh? When Harry was asked about whether he’d invite Obama to the wedding toward the end of his segment, he shied around the question. “I don’t know about that—we haven’t even put the invite or the guest list together,” Harry replied. “Who knows if he’s going to be invited or not? I wouldn’t want to ruin that surprise.” Mhm.

Prince Harry Gushing About His First Christmas With Meghan Markle Is Everything

Just when you thought you couldn’t ship Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s relationship any harder, Harry goes and says the cutest things about what it was like to spend their first Christmas together as an engaged couple—complete with the rest of the royal family.

ICYMI, Prince Harry is currently serving as a guest editor on BBC Radio 4’s flagship Today show. His interview with former President Barack Obama airs today. And as part of the show, BBC interviewer Sarah Montague took the opportunity to ask the fifth in line for the throne what it was like spending his first Christmas with his fiancée at Sandringham House, which is one of the private estates belonging to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

“Oh, it was fantastic,” Harry says when Montague asks how his future wife’s first Christmas with the in-laws went. “She really enjoyed it. The family loved having her there.”

The couple’s holiday plans were an especially big deal because Meghan was breaking royal protocol by attending; historically, the annual gathering has been limited to spouses only. So the fact that she even scored an invite to begin with, coupled with the fact that Markle and Kate Middleton looked like old friends in all the photos we’ve seen from the day, back up what Harry is saying about his family being happy to have her in attendance.

“Together we had an amazing time,” Harry continued. “We had great fun staying with my brother and sister-in-law and running around with the kids.”

Can you just imagine what it would be like to be Markle in that situation? Last year she was trimming the tree with her “fairy god-daughters” in California. This year she’s hanging out with the Queen, a prince, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. What a difference a year makes!

Of course, as is the case for any couple who’s spending their first holiday together, Harry says there were “plenty” of family traditions he had to explain to his new fiancée. But as we’ve come to expect from the former actress, Markle totally rolled with the punches. “Every family is complex,” Harry said. “She’s done an absolutely amazing job. She’s getting in there, and it’s the family that I suppose she’s never had.” (Weeping.)

Watch a gushy clip from the interview below:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Just Shared Their Official Engagement Photos

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry know how to take a good photograph together. Just look at how electric they looked at the Invictus Games back in September, or at the photo call they had in November after announcing their engagement. They’re two of the most photogenic people on the planet—and they’re in love, which makes for some pretty dazzling visuals.

So it’s only fitting the future Duke and Duchess mark their engagement with an official photo shoot. And because the Kensington Palace Twitter handle is A-plus, we all get to see some of the shots. “Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have chosen to release official photographs to mark their engagement,” the Palace tweeted early Thursday morning (December 21) before sharing these two gorgeous snaps:

Kensington Palace revealed the photos were taken by Alexi Lubomirski at Frogmore House, which is in Windsor, We’ll give you a few seconds to swoon over these pictures—because that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will officially tie the knot on May 19, 2018 in at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, but details other than that are sparse. “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry,” Markle’s parents told Kensington Palace about her daughter’s engagement. “Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy and passion for us parents. We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”

“We are very excited for Harry and Meghan,” commented Prince William and Kate Middleton to the palace, as well. “It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”

Proof That Prince William Can Still Make Kate Middleton Laugh Out Loud

After six and a half years of marriage, Prince William still makes Kate Middleton laugh—like, really really hard. The couple recently attended the Royal Variety Show, hosted by English actress and comedian Miranda Hart, where the prince was the source of several moments of comedic gold.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, the first came out when Hart cajoled the prince during the show. The royal responded by shouting out some of her own catchphrases, including “such fun!” The whole display reportedly made the audience—including Kate—seriously LOL.

Then, after a performance from the musical Annie by a group of child actors, Hart encouraged one of the adorable young performers to ask the duke to imitate the trademark “galloping” move from her BBC1 show. After a brief moment of shyness, the prince obliged. Naturally, the sight of a grown man (who is also straight-up royalty) galloping about in a full tuxedo is objectively hilarious. And based on Middleton’s giggling, it’s clear she thought so, too.

The couple, who is expecting their third child in the new year, are constantly cracking each other up, proving that just because they’re royals doesn’t mean they take things too seriously. Kate joked about her pregnancy months before it was a reality (or at least, months before the world knew it was a reality), and William has had his fair share of hilarious digs at his younger brother, Prince Harry, after the announcement of his engagement to Meghan Markle. “Personally, I hope it means [Harry] stays out of my fridge and will stop him scrounging my food,” he joked to the press.

As they say: A royal couple that laughs together, stays together. Especially when they can make the entire world smile along with them.
