The Best Products for Maintaining Platinum Blonde Hair

By far, platinum blond has to be the hair color that’s the easiest to love, but the hardest to maintain. Those who have embraced the icy shade before know just how many products it takes to keep it neither too brassy nor too cool on a daily basis. There’s also hydration and repair to consider, since the amount of bleaching it requires results in strands that will inevitably be more dry and brittle than their original state.

Still, based on Instagram alone, it looks like the high-maintenance hue isn’t going anywhere—and that’s most certainly the case for these 15 women, all of whom have platinum hair so gorgeous, we had to get their secrets. If you’re planning to commit to platinum blond color, consider their advice a cheat sheet to ensuring a long and happy life together. Below, all of the best products for maintaining that blindingly bright hair (prepare for many mentions of Olaplex, purple shampoo, and Bumble and Bumble’s iconic hair oil).

Kris Jenner Just Went Platinum Blond, and This Time It's Legit

The world loves an icon, and Kris Jenner is nothing if not that. After a casual 11 years and 14 seasons in the spotlight, to call Jenner a boss is an understatement, but no one deserves the label more than her. The smarts, the savvy, the talent for lounging around martini in hand—Jenner’s got it all, and now the platinum blond hair to match.

If that martini reference makes no sense, you might’ve missed Jenner’s brief stint as a platinum blond in October. With a single photo on Kim Kardashian’s Instagram, Jenner looked like she was living large in an incredible rose-covered white suit, red leather accessories, and her signature pixie cut in an all-new platinum shade. It was a glorious time, but it wasn’t long for this world. Jenner was back to brunette in a second.

But now, the platinum pixie rides again.

According to the Kardashian’s go-to stylist, Chris Appleton, this time it’s for real—both he and Jenner posted a photo of her with bright, white blond hair late Tuesday night. It’s not quite Kim’s silvery platinum color, but one that leans warmer and more of a true white.

From the captions, this is no fake-out. Jenner hashtagged her photo with “#MotherDaughterTuesday,” while Appleton wrote, “Look who joined the gang!,” along with some advice for going platinum white. The trick? It’s all about Olaplex, a protein treatment that rebuilds your hair’s bonds after bleach does a number on them. Appleton also wrote that he used Color Wow’s Dreamcoat, an anti-humidity treatment that seals your hair follicle to keep it silky.

The good thing is, the Kardashian households are probably stocked with bleach rescue products aplenty. Kim posted on Instagram that she’s thinking of dying her hair darker again for 2018, so if she follows through, it’ll be a one-in, one-out switch. For anyone who’s ever shared hair products with their mom, that’s probably for the best.

WOW: Kris Jenner Has Platinum Blond Hair Now

Here comes the mother of all celebrity hair changes, from the mother of (what can feel like) all celebrities: Kris Jenner just changed her hair. Today, dark brown pixie cuts lost an icon—but the world of platinum just got a new star. In an Instagram posted by Kim Kardashian West, the birthday girl handed over the attention to her mom. As a boss would, Kris is shown lounging, martini in hand, with her new white-blond ‘do.

With literally just the one image to go on, it’s too soon to tell where on the hair switch permanence scale this’ll be falling. It could be that Kris pulled a Kylie and went with a wig for the day. Kylie’s basically set the bar for convincing changes, so we shouldn’t be surprised that it looks so entirely realistic. Still, everyone thought that Kim’s platinum color wouldn’t stick around for long, and she’s holding onto her color a month later. Nothing is for sure.

As with anything Kardashian, umpteenth photos will likely surface on every social media platform, and soon. Until then, we can only hope that Kim is lending Kris some of her Nexxus Emergecee Protein Treatment. Kim told fans that the $20 drugstore hair treatment is the magic behind all of her formerly-black hair not breaking after she went bleach blond in September, so at least the Calabasas fam is likely well-stocked.

Also, can we take a sec to appreciate what a moment in history this is? Today marks the first time in recent memory (since, like, 2013) that Kris has made a major hair change. For all that her kids love to change up their looks (and they really love to change up their looks), Kris usually stays pretty true to her signature pixie cut. That said, anyone who watches any of the family’s 127913 shows knows that Kris does love to get involved. It’s her move.

27 Best Platinum Blonde Hair Ideas for 2017 to Bring to Your Colorist

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59b922f8f917b225c4531230/master/pass/solange-platinum-getty.jpg” alt=”Solange Knowles“/>

When Solange briefly deleted her Twitter account this summer, it was a blow. Thankfully though, it was just a short-lived break from the public eye—and if anyone knows how to make a re-entrance, it’s Solange. Switching things up, the singer opted for long, platinum braids at a Fashion Week performance, following it with a short halo of curls posted to her Insta a few days later.

Two is not a trend, but it’s a sign that Kardashian loves to keep her look fresh for Fashion Week. She pulled a similar change for the winter shows last year, and we can’t blame her for the seasonal craving. Most people prep for fall with, you know, boots and sweaters—but with hair this incredible, she’s making the case for a silver switch up.

In the mildest possible sense of the word, there’s been some controversy over this So You Think You Can Dance look. Seeing it as Game of Thrones fans, it’s clearly an ode to Daenerys Targaryen’s white-blond hair. And yet, per Hudgens’ makeup artist, Allan Aveñdano, they had an Atomic Blonde aesthetic in mind. As we said: the mildest possible controversy, because her platinum is jaw-dropping regardless.

This Is Exactly How Kim Kardashian Keeps Her Platinum Blond Hair From Breaking

It’s only a small exaggeration to say that each day of Fashion Week feels like approximately eight years. Its packs a lot in—so the fact that Kim Kardashian going platinum is still a shining, vibrant memory is just a testament to how great her silvery new color looks. Also memorable: the shock as the truth came out that this was truly, actually, the real deal. No Kylie Jenner wig here, or pinned back hair for a faux Kendall bob. Kardashian had taken the plunge, and emerged with the whitest hair possible. The next question on our lips? How she was going to keep it on her head.

Most people who’ve gone platinum will tell you, it’s no easy upkeep. As cool as it looks, bleach leaves most hair fried, crunchy, and at risk of breaking off with the breeze. So the heat was on to see how Kardashian handled the damage, and as it turns out, her hair savior might just be the cheapest thing in the Kardashian-West hair arsenal. Crazily enough for the multi-billionaire, it’s a $20 drugstore hair treatment—the Nexxus Emergecee Protein Treatment.

That said, she didn’t use it in the typical way (at home, hair marinating in a huge towel, in front of a TV show). According to Byrdie, Kardashian used her time in New York to swing by the Nexxus salon for its signature treatment.

    PHOTO: Michael Simon/startraksphoto.com

Per the brand, the treatment uses a high concentration of proteins to deliver collagen and elastin and strengthen your hair. In life post-bleach, that’s especially important—the chemical does a number on your hair and literally breaks the bonds holding it together, so a combination of protein and hydration is essential to repair the damage and keep it healthy. Think of it like Olaplex (the post-bleach protein builder every hairstylist swears by), taken down just a couple of notches so you can use it at home. Even if you’ve never gone near bleach, we can vouch for it: the silky, soft feeling it leaves behind is no joke.
