Melania Trump Says She 'Doesn't Always Agree' With Her Husband

Melania Trump said in an exchange with reporters that she doesn’t always agree with everything her husband, President Donald Trump, says and does. And

While wrapping up her first international tour as First Lady, Melania answered questions from reporters while sitting outside the pyramids in Giza, Egypt. Some wanted to know just what kind of influence she really has over her husband.

“Some people interpret some of the decisions you’ve made, such as coming to Africa and some of your tweets, as a way of sort of not necessarily undermining but talking at him a little bit, trying to influence him. Can you talk about that?” one reporter asked.

“Well, I don’t always agree [with] what he thinks, and I tell him that. I give him my honest opinion and honest advice,” she said adding that “sometimes he listens, sometimes he doesn’t.”

However, she also wanted to make it clear that she has her “own voice and my own opinions and it’s very important for me that I express what I feel.” In the end, she noted, he’s the President and does what he likes.

A reporter then asked if she ever asked her husband to “put down his phone.” She quickly replied “yes,” which elicited laughter from both the First Lady and the reporters on hand.

As well as explaining how her relationship with her husband works, Melania also let her feelings be known about the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

“What I will say, if we’re talking about the Supreme Court and Judge Kavanaugh, I think he’s highly qualified for the Supreme Court,” she said. “I’m glad that Dr. Ford was heard; I’m glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard. The FBI investigation was done, it’s completed, and [the] Senate voted.”

When pressed on if she believed Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Melania remained evasive, but added, “I think all the victims—we need to help all the victims, no matter what kind of abuse they had, but I am against any kind of abuse or violence.”

Her trip was also not without fashion controversies. While visiting the Sheldrick Wildlife Elephant Project in Kenya, the first lady topped her outfit with a white pith helmet. The helmet has long been associated with colonial rule, particularly in Africa, and are a symbol of oppression.

When asked about the fashion choice, Melania simply replied, “That’s very important what I do, what we’re doing with USAID and what I do with my initiatives, and I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear.”

Every Time Melania Trump Seemed to Publicly Contradict Her Husband

The role of First Lady is one that’s evolved over time and takes a different tone with each new family assuming residence in the White House. Often, the wife of the president is expected to be a quiet supporter who champions less overtly political platforms during her time in the White House—like Laura Bush’s focus on literacy or Michelle Obama’s efforts to improve children’s fitness and diet. Of course, one notable exception is Hillary Rodham Clinton, who took on policy efforts like healthcare during her husband Bill’s two-term presidency. And she took a lot of heat in the press because of it.

“From the inauguration of the very first president in 1789, Americans have paid a lot of attention to the president’s wife—how she dressed, entertained, spoke out on issues, etc,” Betty Boyd Caroli, author of Lady Bird and Lyndon: The Hidden Story of a Marriage that Made a President, tells Glamour. “Of course, the Constitution makes no mention of an official role for the presidential spouse, and each one has made her own decisions about how big a role she would take.”

The Trump presidency is unprecedented in countless ways, not least of which is Melania Trump’s role in the administration. Earlier this year, after some criticism of its delay, she unveiled Be Best, her first official initiative as First Lady. “There are too many critical issues facing children today. So the three main pillars of ‘Be Best’ will include well-being, social media use, and opioid abuse,” she announced from the White House Rose Garden on May 7. For anyone else, the platform would’ve been innocuous enough, but critics citing her husband’s own propensity to attack his detractors on Twitter were quick to comment.

But, for all the conversation about the First Lady’s behavior, her absence and even the statements she makes with her wardrobe, it’s clear her role is proving to break tradition in an entirely different way. Unlike the First Ladies before her, she has publicly appeared to contradict Donald Trump in ways that are confounding to both the political media and the public at large. From the most recent incident around NBA star Lebron James to her own Be Best platform, it’s hard to discern whether this is a good cop/bad cop strategy or just Melania expressing her world views, POTUS’ opinion be damned.

We may never know exactly why this is happening, but we do know it’s something different than what the country has witnessed during past terms.

“Since the 1960s, all [First Ladies] campaigned extensively for their husbands, named a large and competent staff to assist in the White House, took on a project to boost the administration’s legacy, and—except for Pat Nixon—wrote a book about their White House years after they left,” says Boyd Caroli. “Melania Trump, perhaps because of her upbringing in a very different political system, seems to see the job differently.”

Here, we’re keeping track of every time FLOTUS seems to contradict or deflect from her very vocal husband.

Amber Tamblyn Says She's Having 'Really Difficult' #MeToo Conversations With Husband David Cross

Amber Tamblyn is among the many women in Hollywood leading the Time’s Up and #MeToo movements that are changing the cultural conversation around sexual harassment and assault. But she’s also putting in the work at home: In a new interview with NPR, she explained that she’s been having educational conversations with men in her life, including husband David Cross.

Cross, ICYMI, has come under quite a bit of flak in past months for allegedly making racist comments to comedian Charlyne Yi—and with that, Tamblyn was dragged into the fray as well, leading her to eventually reply, “He said he was sorry, publicly, several times. Please don’t @ me in conversations dragging my husband. Thanks.”

In May, Cross again came under fire for talking over Arrested Development star Jessica Walters during a cast panel, seemingly downplaying her when she talked about how Jeffrey Tambor had lashed out at her. “You know, one thing that Jeffrey has said a number of times that I think is important, that you don’t often hear from somebody in his position, is that he learned from the experience and he’s listening and learning and growing. That’s important to remember,” Cross said at the time.

Tamblyn, in her response, made it clear she was handing the situation at home. “I corresponded with Jessica. Just because I’m publicly silent on shit doesn’t mean I’m not privately handling shit. Now that you’re updated on what I do behind the scenes, Twitter, keep my fucking name out of your @. Feel me? Have a great Memorial Day,” she tweeted.

In the interview with NPR, she revealed a little bit about how her work leading the movement has impacted their relationship—and his behavior.

“Believe me, his eyes are open to that now, if they weren’t before,” Tamblyn said. “And this is what it took to have that change. Some men don’t change. The thing I can say about David, that I love so much about him, is that he changes. And part of his introspection and his sensitivity is that he’s aware of that… it’s just a continual sense of getting them to open their eyes and getting them to see either how they’re helping or they’re not helping.”

“I helped him to see,” she continued. “That’s the best thing that you could do. And you know that was really difficult for our family. We got death threats. … And women were coming after me and telling me ‘Oh you can’t be the head of a movement and not speak to this.'”

Tamblyn also reaffirmed her right to have a private life with her husband out of the public eye (and Twitter), before saying that she realizes that the conversations she’s having with Cross are ones many other women in America are navigating with their partners.

“I really hold a strong boundary with this and believe I’ve earned the right to privacy,” she said. “And if you care about my voice and what I have to say at all … and you think you know me, then you better assume that I’m having really difficult conversations with my husband about it. Just like all women are.”

Expect more of these convos from Tamblyn: Her new novel, Any Man, is about a woman who’s a serial rapist—and it’s already spurring discussions about how society looks at sexual assault.

Meghan Markle Reportedly Called Prince Harry the 'Best Husband Ever'

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may be home from their actual post-wedding getaway but the two are still very much in that honeymoon state of mind. The Duchess of Sussex just made her first public appearance without her husband, but she made sure to give him the sweetest shout-out.

During her first solo outing with Queen Elizabeth II in Chester, England, Markle revealed to fans that she’s absolutely loving the newlywed life. One well-wisher in particular, Sharon Briscoe, 61, traveled about 25 miles east from Chirk, Wales and was given the chance to speak with the Duchess, according to People.

“It is wonderful,” Markle told her during their conversation. “I’m really enjoying it.”

Briscoe said that she told Markle, “I said to give our love to Harry and to look after him,” to which she replied, “I will do. That means an awful lot to us. He’s the best husband ever.”

Briscoe said she also told the Duchess that she “looked radiant” and her Highness replied, “That’s so kind.”

“She seems so genuine and really warm and not rushing with people,” Briscoe said of Markle.

The Duchess’ first royal engagement with the Queen was especially significant—and not just because of Prince Harry’s absence. The queen invited Markle to ride the royal train with her, an honor that not even Prince Harry’s had. After a 205-mile train ride, she and the queen made their way to Mersey Gateway Bridge, where local school children performed for them at the Storyhouse Theatre. The two then went to Chester’s town center and met with members of the public before going to lunch at the Chester Town Hall.

Andy Spade, Husband Of The Late Kate Spade, Shares His First Statement

Andy Spade, the husband and partner to the late accessories designer Kate Spade, has broken his silence for the first time since his wife’s passing on Tuesday. In a statement provided to The New York Times, Andy called his wife “the most beautiful woman in the world.”

In his statement, Andy says, “Kate was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was the kindest person I’ve ever known and my best friend for 35 years. My daughter and I are devastated by her loss, and can’t even begin to fathom life without her. We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already.”

He then explained that his wife had suffered from “depression and anxiety for many years,” adding that she was actively seeking help and working closely with medical professionals.

“We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling,” he added.

Andy also stated that the couple had been living separately for the last 10 months. Their daughter, Frances, lived between the two homes, which were just a few blocks apart. According to Andy, he still spoke to his wife every day, ate meals alongside her and continued to vacation together as a family.

“We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce,” he said in the statement. “We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how. We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break.”

To clear up tabloid rumors about his wife’s death, Andy added that everything besides these facts is false.

“She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety. There was no substance or alcohol abuse. There were no business problems. We loved creating our businesses together,” he wrote. And, perhaps most distressing of all, he added “…yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.”

Andy closed the message by saying his main concern is now with his daughter. He signed off with, “Kate loved Bea so very much.”

Following the news of the designer’s alleged suicide, women across generations took to social media to share their memories of the designer and just how much owning a bag she so carefully designed meant to them.

America Ferrera Welcomes First Child With Husband Ryan Piers Williams

Congratulations are in order for America Ferrera, who has given birth to her first child with husband Ryan Piers Williams. The couple made the announcement on Instagram, uploading a close-up pic of their baby’s tiny foot and giving the post an adorable caption. “When 2 become 3…Welcome Sebastian Piers Williams – aka [sic] Baz! Mom, Dad, and Baby are happy, healthy and totally in love!” they wrote on their respective accounts.

Ferrera and Williams, who married in 2011, announced they were expecting a baby on New Year’s Eve. “We’re welcoming one more face to kiss in 2018! Wishing you #MásBesos in the New Year!,” wrote Ferrera under a photo of the two wearing 2018-themed party glasses and holding up a baby onesie that said “Más Besos (por favor)” or “more kisses (please)” in Spanish. Meanwhile, Williams captioned his post, “Making room for new and beautiful things to come in 2018!”

Since then, Ferrera has been prepping for motherhood with the help of her Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants costars, Alexis Bledel, Blake Lively, and Amber Tamblyn. “They are a go-to for me, just one message away and I ask them a million questions. Everything from trying to wrap my mind around the actual birth to talking about what their experiences were and what to prepare for,” she told Us Weekly in April. “I’m so lucky that I have so many amazing women around me. Having their support has been everything.”

In January, the actress shared a baby bump pic featuring her Sisterhood sisterhood rubbing her belly. “Starting the New Year off with blessings from my Sisterhood. We’ve got work to do for the next generation. Let’s get to it. #TIMESUP,” she wrote.

Tamblyn was also instrumental in planning one of Ferrera’s baby showers alongside the actress’s friend Tamara. “Baby showers are for practicing. So insanely grateful for the village of women I have in my life who have shown up to love, support and celebrate (all of me) in style as I transition into motherhood,” Ferrera captioned a photo featuring Tamblyn pumping her fist while she and Tamara posed inside a cardboard vagina. “Boundless gratitude to my boos @todaytamara [and] @amberrosetamblyn for planning a magical and powerful celebration. And to @samlooksatthis for the gorgeous vagina.”
