Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospitalized After a Fall

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized early Thursday morning after falling in her office Wednesday evening and fracturing three ribs, according to a statement from the court.

“She went home, but after experiencing discomfort overnight, went to George Washington University Hospital early this morning,” the statement said. “Tests showed that she fractured three ribs on her left side and she was admitted for observation and treatment.”

Ginsburg, a lifelong champion of women’s rights, has become a cultural icon and is revered and beloved by feminists across America. The Notorious RBG, as she is often called, was the subject of a documentary earlier this year that covered her incredible career, marriage, and, yes, even her workout routine—which is incredibly impressive for an 85-year-old.

“These days we rarely go out without people—mostly women—asking to take a picture or telling her they admire her,” Ginsburg’s granddaughter Clara Spera wrote of her “Bubbie” for Glamour in May. “It’s equally strange and touching for me to see a young woman, probably my age, ask Bubbie if she can give her a hug.”

Spera further explained her grandmother’s significance to women of all ages. “As a young lawyer, Bubbie won several landmark gender equality cases before the Supreme Court in the 1970s. Most people who wear ‘You Can’t Spell Truth Without Ruth’ T-shirts or sport ‘I Dissent’ tote bags might not be able to name any of them or point to a specific opinion she’s written on the Court since. But they don’t need to,” she says. “They know that her search for justice and for legal and social equality has been relentless. She doesn’t have one case or moment that has defined her career. Instead, to many, she’s a feminist icon because of her tireless persistence at inching us all closer to equality.”

Given the current makeup of the Supreme Court, which shifted toward the conservative side with the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh in October, and the overwhelming affection for RBG, there were strong reactions to the news of her hospitalization on social media.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, RBG.

Demi Lovato is reportedly in the hospital because of an alleged heroin overdose. On Tuesday (July 24), TMZ reported, the singer was rushed from a home in the Hollywood Hills to a hospital in Los Angeles, where she is currently being treated. TMZ reported that the news came from law enforcement” and states her condition is currently unknown. Us Weekly also confirmed the news via LAPD officer Ray Brown, who told the publication that authorities “responded to a home in Hollywood at 11:37 A.M. local time.”

In 2016, Lovato opened up to Glamour about her past substance abuse. “I felt an emptiness inside of me, and I reached for so many things—a person, a substance, a behavior—to fill that void,” she said at the time. “Getting sober was difficult. I went into rehab, I came out, and I didn’t stay sober. I still had issues occasionally. Now some days it’s difficult; some days it’s easy.”

Lovato celebrated six years of sobriety this March. “So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness. It IS possible. ??,” she wrote on Twitter at the time. Then, in June, she released a song called “Sober” in which she appeared to refer to a relapse. “Momma, I’m so sorry/ I’m not sober anymore/ Daddy, please forgive me/ For the drinks spilled on the floor,” she sang in the song, adding “My truth” on Twitter.

Lady Gaga Has Been Hospitalized for Severe Pain Ahead of Show in Rio

Lady Gaga shared with her fans that sadly she will no longer be able to perform at the Rock in Rio music festival in Brazil this weekend due to a recent hospitalization. She was taken to the hospital yesterday for “severe physical pain.” She wrote to her fans in an emotional Instagram post, revealing “it is not simply hip pain or wear and tear from the road, I am in severe pain.” (You might remember that in 2013, Lady Gaga cancelled some of her Born This Way Ball shows due to a hip injury, but it seems this is unrelated to that incident).

She went on to say “Brazil, I’m devastated that I’m not well enough to come to Rock In Rio. I would do anything 4 u but I have to take care of my body right now. I ask for your grace and understanding, and promise that I will come back and perform for you soon. ? I’m so sorry, and I love you so much. ?”

She also shared a more formal medical statement on her condition:

Lady Gaga takes her health seriously, and it’s clear she’s devastated that she won’t be able to make the show in Rio. She snapped a photo of her “Rio” tattoo and posted the meaning behind it on Instagram. “Remember years ago when I tattooed Rio on my neck, the tattoo was written by children in the favelas. ?? You hold a special place in my heart I love you.”

The festival, which starts today, will go on as planned and feature music from Maroon 5, Fergie, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns N’ Roses, but certainly Lady Gaga will be missed. Here’s hoping for a smooth and safe recovery.
