Tweed is a fabric most often associated with the prim-and-proper—the Coco Chanel’s and Blair Waldorf‘s of the fashion world. It’s classic and polished, often found in matching blazer-and-skirt sets. For Fall 2018, though, designers did a 180, showing tweed in a brand-new—and decidedly non-preppy—light: with metallic shimmer (at Moschino), neon threads (Prada), and, in the most look-at-me cases, tinsel sleeves (we see you, Gucci.) You’d sooner see a cropped tweed jacket over a corset-dress like at Thom Browne or an all-tweed bomber jacket at Alessandra Rich than as part of a buttoned-up suit. These new interpretations have us rethinking tweed, and looking to incorporate the material into our cold-weather wardrobes—starting with outerwear.

If women started playing sports while wearing stilettos tomorrow, I wouldn’t be surprised. That’s because Meghan Markle has worn heels to play ball on two occasions and that’s probably enough to start a trend. Here’s an unpopular opinion: For the longest time I just didn’t get it. Sometimes I’m still not sure if I do. Of course Meghan Markle looks good in everything, she’s Meghan Markle! She’s pretty, fit, seemingly happy, and always put together. Whatever it is, it wasn’t until I recently starting working on building out my fall wardrobe that I noticed Markle’s influence trickling into my own shopping cart. Maybe it’s a latent desire to be a royal or maybe it really is just the Meghan Markle Effect coming for my closet. Nevertheless, here are some of her best fall looks and the outfit lessons they’ve taught me, plus all the pieces I’m now convinced I most definitely need.
Seasonal fashion guides tend to focus on “essentials,” pieces that have longevity, are trend-agnostic, and are considered to be worth spending money on because of the wear you’ll get out of them. For fall, that means the black ankle boots, the camel coat, the thick-knit sweater… All really useful parts of any wardrobe, but not particularly fun to shop for. The most exciting Fall 2018 nail color is one you’ve probably never thought to grab off the polish wall: Green in all its variations. The shade has been permeating Instagram leading up to autumn, and there are a handful of particular shades that seem to be the most popular, from mossy forest green to Nickelodeon-level slime green.
We could have the runways to thank: Verdant greens gained steam last season thanks to designers including Tom Ford, Valentino, Sonia Rykiel and it continued during this past fashion month at Prada, Miu Miu and Maryam Nassir Zadeh.
But—because not everyone can or wants to rock a neon green Versace suit like Blake Lively—the color trend made its way into beauty.
