Donald Trump Reportedly Broke Royal Protocol Multiple Times When Meeting With Queen Elizabeth II

Donald Trump caused a major Twitter storm last week when he reportedly kept Queen Elizabeth II waiting for about 15 minutes. But this was far from the only faux pas he allegedly committed that day. According to news reports, the president went on to break royal protocol multiple times during his meeting with the queen.

The New York Times reports that both the president and First Lady Melania Trump forgot to bow and curtsy when meeting Queen Elizabeth II, as is customary. Then, Trump walked in front of the 92-year-old monarch, which the Times writes is a “royal no-no.” Footage of the awkward moment shows him stopping in front of her at one point, cutting her off, and making her walk around him. Check out the receipts for yourself, below:

The third snafu happened after the meeting. On Monday, Good Morning Britain aired an interview Trump did with host Piers Morgan, in which he recalled the queen saying Brexit was “a very complex problem.” Time reports that heads of state revealing their conversations with the queen is a breach of protocol.

Buckingham Palace shot down reports and rumors that Prince Charles and Prince William intentionally snubbed Trump by not attending his meeting with the queen. “It was entirely in line with standard practice for guest of government visits [for] The Queen to receive the President and First Lady,” a palace spokesperson said, according to The Independent. “The arrangements were mutually agreed between the Palace and the U.K. and U.S. governments. There was never a suggestion that other members of the royal family would take part.”

President Trump and First Lady Melania Met Queen Elizabeth II for Tea

While a giant baby Donald Trump blimp flew across the London skies to protest his visit, (yes, that happened), Queen Elizabeth II capped off a busy week of royal activities by hosting the U.S. President and First Lady Melania Trump for Friday tea at Windsor Castle.

And just in case you’re wondering, this is the same castle where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding festivities took place back in May.

The President and First Lady arrived at the castle in a Range Rover driven by two officials. In the past, the queen’s husband, Prince Philip, has driven foreign dignitaries himself, as he did with Barack and Michelle Obama back in 2016. But Prince Philip was not spotted today, according to the White House pool report, nor were any other members of the royal family.

The queen greeted the couple wearing a blue day coat with a matching hat over a yellow and blue floral outfit and carrying one of her signature black bags. FLOTUS, meanwhile, wore a pale Dior skirt suit, according to CNN’s Kate Bennett, who also pointed out that Trump wore Dior when she met Prince Harry at last year’s Invictus Games. After a couple of quick handshakes, the President and First Lady stood for the U.S. national anthem, hands over their hearts.

While there were smiles all around during the greeting, it would seem that the Trumps may have kept the queen waiting a tad too long, as she was spotted checking her watch while they were still in the air, arriving by helicopter.

The Trumps did not appear to bow and curtsy upon greeting the queen. But it is actually not required by her majesty, especially for heads of state, according to CNN. After the short walk, they all headed inside for tea.

Twitter, of course, had some thoughts about the meeting—especially since it was taking place as things were hitting the fan back across the pond: On Friday morning 12 Russian nationals were handed indictments by the Justice Department, as a part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia meddling investigation.

And some thought Trump broke protocol by blocking the queen during their walk.

As for what the Trump and the queen discussed over tea? No word yet. But it’s possible he discussed how that Baby Trump blimp made him feel “unwelcome.”

Meghan Markle Wore Earrings Gifted to Her by Queen Elizabeth II on Their First Joint Royal Outing

This morning the world became acquainted with its new favorite duo, Queen Elizabeth and Meghan Markle, as they rode the royal train together to their first official engagement in Cheshire, England. And it seems they commemorated this outing with a very special gift, spotted on none other than Her Royal Highness Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

For this joint appearance, the Duchess wore a custom Givenchy Haute Couture dress and bag with Sarah Flint heels. But royal enthusiasts quickly noticed her jewelry—notably, a pair of small pearl and diamond earrings.

Soon enough, word got around (via the group of royal correspondents assembled to cover the event) that the elegant accessory was actually gifted to the newly minted Duchess by the Queen. According to British outlets The Sun and The Daily Mail, the earrings were plucked straight from her personal collection.

The classic diamond-accented design does have a vintage flair that aligns with pieces you’d expect to see from the Queen’s archives. (Side note: The Queen seems to really know Markle’s aesthetic—the earrings fit right in with the Duchess’s polished style, and compliment her custom Givenchy look quite nicely.) To receive such a unique gift from your grandmother-in-law sure does seem like a glamorous sign of approval.

Queen Elizabeth II Has a Never-Before-Seen Photo of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on Her Mantle

Queen Elizabeth II may be the head of the British Monarchy, but, deep down, she’s just like any other grandmother, decorating her home with photos of her grandkids.

Want proof? An eagle-eyed reporter at Hello magazine spotted a never-before-seen picture of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle adorning the queen’s table in Buckingham Palace. The reporter spotted the pic in the background of a shot taken Wednesday during the queen’s private audience with George Brandis, the Australian high commissioner to the U.K. The framed photo — one of a few others that are blocked — shows Markle wearing a pale blue dress nuzzled up against her prince in a blue suit. It’s unclear where, exactly, the picture was taken, though Hello speculates that it could be from a selection of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s engagement photos that were never released publicly.

See the pic up close, below:

The queen and Prince Harry are known to have a close bond, so it’s hardly surprising that she’d decorate her home with photos of him and Markle. “Don’t forget she’s hugely close to her grandson,” royal expert Katie Nicholl said ahead of the royal wedding. “They have a very special relationship. She is thrilled to be seeing Harry settle down and finally marry.”

Not to mention that there was another tough audience that immediately took to Harry’s significant other: the queen’s corgis.

“It was very sweet,” Markle said of meeting the pups. To which Prince Harry responded: “For the last 33 years, I’ve been barked at. This one walks in, and absolutely nothing! Just wagging tails.”

Considering there was also an entire batch of official portraits taken on the day of the royal wedding that included Markle, Prince Harry, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and the queen herself, we’re willing to bet that there will be a new addition to the mantle in the near future.

Elizabeth Warren: Trump's 'Domestic Gag Rule' Threatens More Than Just Abortion

The Trump Administration formally came out Friday in favor of cutting off federal family planning money to organizations that perform abortions or make referrals for them.

The rule change affects Title X, the $260 million federal program which underwrites the costs of contraception, reproductive health services and STD screening for low-income and uninsured patients.

The fundamental premise of this Title X change is as simple as it is controversial: The administration believes abortion is not “family planning” and the two do not belong in the same place or conversation.

NPR broke out the details further, saying it “would require facilities receiving federal family planning funds to be physically separate from those that perform abortion; would eliminate the requirement that women with unintended pregnancies be counseled on their full range of reproductive options; and would ban abortion referrals.”

The White House says this change fulfills Trump’s “promise to continue to improve women’s health and ensure that federal funds are not used to fund the abortion industry in violation of the law.” Critics call it a “gag rule” that prevents caregivers from giving patients full information and makes good on Trump’s vow to defund Planned Parenthood.

In a conversation with Glamour this week, Sen. Elizabeth Warren slammed the Title X proposal as bad policy that could endanger women.

“Forcing doctors to keep information from patients about their health options is dangerous and just plain wrong,” the Massachusetts Democrat said.

What Trump is pursuing isn’t new: He’s bringing home the essence of the so-called “Mexico City Policy,” which cuts off federal funding to worldwide health groups that perform abortions or even provide information about them.

The proposal now on the table could have an outsized effect on Planned Parenthood, which offers a variety of reproductive and wellness services in addition to abortion. According to Kaiser Health News, “Planned Parenthood affiliates account for about 13 percent of total Title X sites but serve an estimated 40 percent of its patients.”

Federal law has long prohibited the use of public money to subsidize abortion procedures. But Warren, who was among many lawmakers who signed a letter protesting the Title X changes, says “there’s a lot more on the line as well.”

The Title X rule change “demands that multi-service providers not put a woman’s best interest first — and that if they do, they will lose federal funding for the full array of healthcare services,” Warren said. “That’s shocking.”

“Accessible contraceptives, services to help women prevent unplanned pregnancies [and] care for children after they’re born are all under attack by the Republicans,” she added.

Warren also called the fight a matter of equity. “Threatening to cut back on basic health care services disproportionately hits communities of color, the uninsured and low-income women,” she said.

“This is about personal liberty, but it’s also about women having full economic participation in this country. Women who can’t get access to basic reproductive service health care services have fewer economic opportunities going forward. An unplanned pregnancy can derail an education or the early steps of a career.”

Planned Parenthood sized up the significance of the current Title X change in a blunt Friday email to reporters: “For nearly two decades, Title X law has been clear: Health care providers cannot withhold information from you about your pregnancy options. This rule means they can.”

The White House, however, sought to frame the new proposal as simply shoring up existing law.

“The new proposed rule would not cut funds from the Title X program. Instead, it would ensure that taxpayers do not indirectly fund abortions,” the press secretary’s statement said. “Contrary to recent media reports, HHS’s proposal does not include the so-called ‘gag rule’ on counseling about abortion that was part of the Reagan Administration’s Title X rule.”

The Reagan version of the rule was similar, but not identical, to the Trump iteration. It called for separate facilities for abortions and said Title X recipients could not disseminate information about, or advocate for, terminating a pregnancy.

Called a “gag rule” for prohibiting doctors from talking to patients about abortion, Reagan’s policy got bogged down in court battles and “never went into effect as written, although the Supreme Court ruled it was an appropriate use of executive power,” as the Associated Press reported. His Democratic successor, Bill Clinton, ultimately rescinded it in 1993.

While Vice President Mike Pence—along with his wife, Karen—is a stalwart conservative known for a desire to end abortion in the U.S., Trump himself has come a long way from the self-described “very” pro-choice views he once held.

Days after his 2017 inauguration, Trump reinstated the “Mexico City” order, known by detractors as the “global gag rule.” This past January, he became the first sitting president to address the annual anti-abortion March for Life in Washington via video link. And on May 22, Trump keynotes a “Campaign for Life” gala hosted by the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List.

“The ‘Protect Life Rule’ would not cut a single penny of family planning funding,” said Mallory Quigley, a spokeswoman for Susan B. Anthony List, said in support of Trump’s Title X stance. “This is simply about responding [to] a desire on the part of American taxpayers, six in 10 of whom do not want to be complicit in abortion through their federal funds and taxpayer dollars.”

Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said pro choice advocates would “not stand by while our basic health and rights are stripped away.”

“Everyone has the right to access information about their health care—including information about safe, legal abortion—and every woman deserves the best medical care and information, no matter how much money she makes or where she lives. No matter what,” she said in a statement. “They won’t get it under this rule.”

Here's Why Queen Elizabeth II Has Two Birthdays

Born on April 21, 1926, Queen Elizabeth II is Britain’s longest reigning monarch—and she turns 92 today. Although she’ll celebrate her birthday on Saturday with the royal family, she’ll get double the fun in June with another birthday celebration on June 9. Why? Apparently, it’s royal tradition for the sovereign to have both a private birthday and a public birthday. The private celebration takes place on the monarch’s actual birthday and the public event often takes place in the summer—when the weather is nicer.

Yep, that’s an actual thing: The royals celebrate a second birthday when the sun is more likely to be shining—and early summer offers much better chances of that, thanks to the rainy weather in the U.K. The June celebration is when the royal family takes part in the Trooping the Color parade.

According to People, the tradition likely started in 1748, during the reign of King George II, who was born in October. The annual Trooping of the Color had become a celebration of the King and the armed forces, but it needed to be moved to a date with better weather. King Edward VII, who reigned at the beginning of the 20th century, was also born during the colder months on November 9. His birthday was also celebrated in May or June, thanks to the parade. It’s now tradition that the parade be held on the second Saturday in June.

But back to her actual birthday! During the Queen’s private celebration on Saturday, there will be a special concert held for the Queen at the Royal Albert Hall in London with the royal family. Performers will include Kylie Minogue, Sting, Shaggy, Shawn Mendes, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Anne-Marie, Craig David, Sir Tom Jones, and Donel Mangena.

The royal family’s official Twitter also celebrated the Queen by releasing some archived photos of her when she was 20 and 21 years old.

She was also greeted this morning by The Band of the Irish Guards playing “Happy Birthday” during the Changing of the Guard.

Happy Birthday, Queen Liz!
