8 Designers on What It's Like to Dress Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex

Everyone remembers their first time. They compare it to feeling a kid on Christmas morning, recall their phones exploding with more notifications than humanly possible to respond to. Some need to take a step back in order to fully understand the significance of the moment—when Meghan Markle gave their fashion brand her personal stamp of approval.

Influencer marketing may be powerful, but as these brands can attest: not much compares to when the Duchess of Sussex is photographed wearing one of your pieces, triggering the so-called Meghan Markle Effect. It can shift conversations entirely for those already established brands and can throw a little-known, at-home operation onto a globe stage in an instant.

“In terms of growing our business exponentially, Meghan has enabled us to do this in a very tangible, immediate way,” says James Bartle, founder and CEO of Outland Denim. The Australian brand is on a mission to create responsibly-made denim while supporting ethical work conditions, namely in its facility in Cambodia. Markle wore the label repeatedly during her royal tour of Australia in 2018, and its sales skyrocketed, allowing the under-the-radar business to grow. “You cannot put a price on the brand recognition nor the credibility that the Duchess is able to bestow on a small, socially oriented enterprise such as ours.”

Outland’s success story isn’t unique: Many other designers that the Duchess of Sussex has touched since her public persona shifted from actress to royalty, British Vogue guest editor, curator of her own fashion collection, and pal to Beyoncé can attest to her impact. In their own words, the designers ahead explain exactly what happened when Markle wore their creations.

Not Even Meghan Markle Can Resist This Summer Dress Trend

Meghan Markle‘s never been one to shy away from a fashion trend—even if it’s not aligned with royal protocol. So it surprised no one to see the Duchess of Sussex wearing one of the most popular summer dresses of 2019 to cheer on Prince Harry (alongside Kate Middleton, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, and baby Archie) during a polo match in Berkshire, England. If anything, it made us think: Why don’t we own more linen dresses?

For the surprise family outing, Markle wore her summertime best: a loose-fit, short-sleeve linen dress perfect for a day outdoors, when you’re watching polo and also caring for a newborn.

Royal fashion blogs identified Markle’s dress as Lisa Marie Fernandez’s Rosetta linen caftan in olive, which retails for $595.

We’re seeing a trend in the duchess’s summer wardrobe: Markle wore a linen blazer to Wimbledon over the weekend. Hey, it’s hot. Why wouldn’t you want to wear light, breathable fabrics if you’re going to spend time outside?

Every Single Detail We Know About Sophie Turner's Custom Louis Vuitton Wedding Dress

Just when we thought we’d seen and absorbed all the details surrounding Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ second wedding in France on last Saturday (June 29)—the pre-wedding parties, the ceremony, the couple’s first official wedding photoPeople‘s gone and blessed us with still more. On Friday, July 5, the magazine had the full report on just how much work went into the custom Louis Vuitton gown Turner wore for her nuptials, and let’s just say it’s pretty amazing.

We had our first close-up looks of the dress on Wednesday, July 3. The gown’s designer, Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director of women’s collections at Louis Vuitton, posted a photo that gives us a glimpse of his creation from the back and sides. According to People, it’s made from flower-embroidered tulle and silk Gazar, a type of silk usually used in bridal and evening dresses. And all that embroidery took a lot of time: Per the magazine, more than 10 embroiderers worked a combined total of 75 hours to embellish the dress’s almost 46 feet of tulle with more than 650,000 stitches.

The same day, we had a second peek when the couple posted the first pics from their wedding. You can clearly see the gorgeous front of the dress in this photo of Turner and Jonas heading down the aisle after exchanging vows. People reports that each panel of her dress was embroidered with 50,400 crystal eclats and 50,400 white beads.

If you look back up at her veil, the amount of time spent on that is pretty stunning too: According to People, embroiderers worked for 48 hours on the highly detailed piece. The total time spent making her dress? More than 350 hours.

Turner looked beautiful on her wedding day, and the amount of detail in her dress is a thing of wonder. Although knock-off versions of celebrity wedding gowns tend to appear rather quickly after a high-profile wedding like this, it’s definitely going to be a challenge for anyone to dupe Turner’s intricately detailed dress.

The First Close-Up Look of Sophie Turner's Lace Wedding Dress Is Stunning

We’ve heard a lot about Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ wedding over the past week: the ceremony, the details from the reception—not to mention the full pre-wedding week of festivities with family and friends (Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, among others, flew in early). But one part of the big day that we haven’t had a good look at so far? Turner’s wedding dress. Of course, we’d seen her pictured wearing a minimalist white gown at a pre-wedding event—and then there was the modern, chic Bevza jumpsuit she wore for her first wedding to Joe in Las Vegas earlier this year. But as far as the dress for she and Joe’s larger wedding? It’s just been a few fuzzy photos from paparazzi so far—until Wednesday evening, that is, when Louis Vuitton’s creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière, shared a picture of Turner wearing the custom gown, confirming it was designed by him and his team.

The photo is taken from the back, and Tuner’s pictured standing on a pedestal, surrounded by mirrors (so yes, we get to peek at the front and sides of the gown as well). The gown is designed with an elegant white lace bodice with a low, keyhole-style back in a what looks like satin and illusion short sleeves with longer sheer lace ones attached. Except for satin details, a good part of the bodice is a second type of white lace, which flows down into a full white lace skirt and train. Turner also opted for a veil, choosing one with lace edging and floral embroidery, with what look like embroidered petals scattered across the rest of the material.

Of course, she looks stunning—and it looks like she loves the look too: You can see a wide smile on her face in the picture Ghesquière posted. “Absolut beauty @sophiet,” he captioned it.

Celebrities got in on the comments to share how gorgeous the Queen in the North was looking: “Divine ?❤️??,” Karlie Kloss wrote. “Wowwww so beautiful ❤️??,” Lily Aldridge posted. “WOW. Incroyable ???!!” Nina Dobrev wrote.

Priyanka Chopra Wore a Designer Dress With a $30 Bag

Priyanka Chopra is currently in France celebrating Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s wedding along with her husband, Nick and the rest of the Jonas clan—which means we’ve been getting a ton of excellent celebrity style. Chopra has been wearing plenty of high-low outfits, which she’s known for and puts together so well. The latest? A yet-to-be-released designer dress with an under-$100 bag from a fast-fashion favorite.

On Thursday (June 27) Chopra headed to a pre-Jonas/Turner wedding party in Provence wearing a shiny metallic lavender shirtdress from Honayda’s Spring 2019 collection. She styled it with sandals, simple jewelry and, of course, husband Nick on her arm.

The Saudi brand has been around since 2017, but has recently been spotted on celebrities like Bella Hadid, Lupita Nyong’o, and Mary J Blige in recent months. Chopra herself wore one of its designs—a one-shouldered, pleated white jumpsuit—to Cannes earlier this year.

Although her shirtdress was designer, Chopra’s accessories were a little more budget friendly, according to fan blogs. Her croc-effect mini bag, in a purple shade that matched her outfit, is believed to be from Mango. And the best part? The Croc-Effect Mini Bag is on sale, marked down from $59.99 to $29.99.

This isn’t Chopra’s first high-low outfit from this France trip. While in Paris, she was photographed wearing fresh-off-the-runway Peter Pilotto with $68 earrings from Kendra Scott.

As for what she wore to her fellow J-Sister’s wedding? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
