Why Some People Are Calling for a Louis Vuitton Boycott

In October 2017, local officials confirmed that Louis Vuitton would be opening a facility in Johnson County, Texas, its first in the state. That month, Johnson County approved Louis Vuitton’s request for a 10-year, 75% tax abatement (which estimated at approximately $91,900 annually), the Cleburne Times-Review reported.

In the lead-up to the grand opening, Arnault attended President Trump’s first State Dinner, and Louis Vuitton signed the Administration’s Pledge to America’s Workers. Then, a week before the ribbon-cutting, scheduled for October 2019, the White House announced that the President would visit Louis Vuitton’s new factory on opening day. Which leads us to…

The opening

Louis Vuitton Rochambeau Ranch officially opened its doors on October 17. Six specific handbag and backpack styles will be produced at the facility, all of which will have the “Made in USA” tag. Louis Vuitton currently employs around 150 people at Louis Vuitton Rochambeau Ranch, with the goal of creating 1,000 jobs there over the next five years, the Dallas Morning News reports.

President Trump, Arnault, and Louis Vuitton chairman and CEO Michael Burke were all present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, as were White House advisors Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

Louis Vuitton CEO Michael Burke, Jared Kushner, and Ivanka Trump joined President Trump and Arnault at the opening of Louis Vuitton Rochambeau Ranch.

“This shows two commitments: One, the commitment of LVMH to the American market, and two, the commitment of President Trump to the American worker,” Arnault said, according to WWD, estimating that LVMH’s investment in the U.S. comes in at over $1 billion.

In his remarks, President Trump joked: “Today, we continue the extraordinary revival of American manufacturing, and we proudly celebrate the opening of the brand-new Louis Vuitton — a name I know very well. It cost me a lot of money over the years.”

Already, Louis Vuitton executives tiptoed around the political implications of the photo opp. Arnault told WWD: “We are very honored to have the president of the United States. I’m not here to judge any types of policies. I’m here to work with my brand and we are going to, over five years, have 1,000 people working here and that’s what matters.” Burke, meanwhile, insisted to the publication that this partnership is “about jobs, it’s not a political statement. This is about engaging with the president of the United States’ overriding economic goal of bringing jobs back to the United States…it’s ironic that it’s a French company that’s doing it. There’s a subject….for those who want to be critical. Once again we’re helping out America. That’s what friends are for.”

What’s in it for LV

Yes, there’s the tax abatement—and, as the Wall Street Journal notes, a way around trade disputes affecting the European Union. But according to Louis Vuitton, the opening of a Texas facility is more about better serving one of its most important markets.

Every Single Detail We Know About Sophie Turner's Custom Louis Vuitton Wedding Dress

Just when we thought we’d seen and absorbed all the details surrounding Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ second wedding in France on last Saturday (June 29)—the pre-wedding parties, the ceremony, the couple’s first official wedding photoPeople‘s gone and blessed us with still more. On Friday, July 5, the magazine had the full report on just how much work went into the custom Louis Vuitton gown Turner wore for her nuptials, and let’s just say it’s pretty amazing.

We had our first close-up looks of the dress on Wednesday, July 3. The gown’s designer, Nicolas Ghesquière, artistic director of women’s collections at Louis Vuitton, posted a photo that gives us a glimpse of his creation from the back and sides. According to People, it’s made from flower-embroidered tulle and silk Gazar, a type of silk usually used in bridal and evening dresses. And all that embroidery took a lot of time: Per the magazine, more than 10 embroiderers worked a combined total of 75 hours to embellish the dress’s almost 46 feet of tulle with more than 650,000 stitches.

The same day, we had a second peek when the couple posted the first pics from their wedding. You can clearly see the gorgeous front of the dress in this photo of Turner and Jonas heading down the aisle after exchanging vows. People reports that each panel of her dress was embroidered with 50,400 crystal eclats and 50,400 white beads.

If you look back up at her veil, the amount of time spent on that is pretty stunning too: According to People, embroiderers worked for 48 hours on the highly detailed piece. The total time spent making her dress? More than 350 hours.

Turner looked beautiful on her wedding day, and the amount of detail in her dress is a thing of wonder. Although knock-off versions of celebrity wedding gowns tend to appear rather quickly after a high-profile wedding like this, it’s definitely going to be a challenge for anyone to dupe Turner’s intricately detailed dress.

Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell Reunited on the Louis Vuitton Runway

Back in September, the fashion world collectively lost their minds when a crew of OG supermodels reunited at Versace’s Spring 2018 show for a dazzling finale. So imagine the scene at Paris Fashion Week Men’s, when two of the most iconic names in fashion, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, walked down the same catwalk for the first time in years. Yup, it was major.

This wasn’t any ordinary fashion show: Moss and Campbell came together again to send off Kim Jones, who, after seven years at the helm of menswear at Louis Vuitton, presented his final collection in Paris. In matching monogrammed trench coats, they made a special, surprise finale appearance, reminiscent of that Versace moment from the fall. And while their ’90s runway appearances are the stuff (or struts?) of legends, the model duo proved they still have it—and can show the new generation a thing or two about how to dominate the catwalk.

While Campbell hasn’t been absent from Fashion Week lineups for long (she most recently walked a few shows during the Spring 2018 womenswear season), more time has passed since Moss made her way down the runway—in fact, this is her first official appearance since Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2013 presentation, five years ago, per Vogue. It’s been even longer since both Campbell and Moss appeared as part of the same show, though, despite basically running the circuit in the ’90s and early aughts, which makes this reunion all the more incredible.

The casting came from Jones himself, it seems. On Instagram, he shared backstage Polaroids of Campbell and Moss, explaining how their appearance at his final Louis Vuitton show “was really a thank you and reference to @themarcjacobs early 2000s Vuitton and the fact that he was the one that gave me the opportunity to be @louisvuitton”. (Jones ascended to the top menswear position at the company when Jacobs was its creative director.)

More than simply marking the end of Jones’ time at Louis Vuitton with a grand finale—really, there’s no better way to go out than with two legends wearing in your designs—casting Moss and Campbell makes a strong point about age inclusion on the runway: At 44 and 47 years old, respectively, they’re older than the majority of models we see cast in fashion shows and ad campaigns. Their continued presence in the industry confirms what we already knew: Models can kill it on the runway at any age.
