2018 Festival Fashion: Denim Shorts Styled Four Ways by Different Models


Now that we’ve officially entered festival season (Coachella and Stagecoach, check and check) and are approaching summer, it’s time to revisit some of those clothing items that come back in your closet with the warm weather. We’re talking, specifically, about denim shorts: They’re impervious to the trend cycle and have likely been a part of your wardrobe for years—and yet they can still stump you when it comes to the styling. Do you just do the whole white T-shirt thing and call it a day, or do you go for a bustier? Should you go for a nineties vibe, or look to the aughts for inspiration?

Sometimes it helps to poll the experts—or some of the folks who wear cutoffs best. So, at a poolside brunch hosted by Levi’s during the first weekend of Coachella, we asked four of the most stylish models in the business the question everyone in attendance probably asked themselves that morning as they got dressed: How should I style a classic pair of denim shorts, now that it’s finally shorts season? And Bella Hadid, Joan Smalls, Hailey Baldwin, and Romee Strijd answered. Check out their tips—and answers inspired by them—ahead.

J.Crew's New Denim Recycling Program Lets You Do Good *and* Save Money on New Jeans


J.Crew‘s first collection of 2018 has a singular focus: Denim for every day and every occasion. And unlike other new collection drops, you won’t have to wait months to get these jeans at a discount. Starting today, J.Crew is partnering with Blue Jeans Go Green, an organization that recycles old denim into housing insulation for communities in need, to collect customers’ gently-used jeans in stores and offer them a discount in return.

“The J.Crew Group has been a longtime supporter of the Blue Jeans Go Green program, with both Madewell and J.Crew participating over the last four years,” Andrea Samber, the Director of Consumer Marketing for Strategic Alliances at Blue Jeans Go Green’s parent organization Cotton Incorporated, tells Glamour. “We were thrilled to hear that denim was J.Crew’s focus for Spring 2018, [because] the Blue Jeans Go Green program is a great way to educate consumers about sustainability and diverting textile waste from landfills,” she adds. Since launching in 2006, Blue Jeans Go Green has kept over 1,000 tons of toxic waste out of landfills by recycling over 2 million denim items, on top of providing Habitat for Humanity with materials for housing insulation, according to Samber.

Through the end of this year, if you bring your gently-used jeans into a J.Crew store, you’ll get $20 off any new denim item in return. There are no brand or style exclusions when it comes to what you can recycle. So, outside of doing some serious good, you can get some new threads in the process. (J.Crew ran a similar give-back-get-back campaign over the holidays, in partnership with One Warm Coat.)

“Once the denim is given to J.Crew for recycling, it’s then sent to the program’s manufacturing partners in Arizona to begin the recycling process,” Samber explains. “All hardware, like rivets, and decorations are removed and recycled, and the denim is returned to its natural, original cotton fiber state.” After that material has been broken down, it’s treated with fire retardant solution and, eventually, turned into denim insulation.

We’ve seen our fair share of limited-time-only sales, but there’s little risk of missing out on this do-good denim initiative. “While many of our retail partnerships have been shorter-term, the J.Crew program [is] unique in that [it’s] year round,” says Samber.

Yes! AYR is Launching Plus-Size Denim in Up To Size 22


Any shopper can attest to just how hard it is to find a pair of well-made, perfectly-fit jeans. And, to state the obvious, when you get into plus-sizes the hunt for stellar denim gets even tougher. For us, the first challenge is tracking down a store that carries your size; then the frustration moves to finding the style you want since trends make their way to the plus-size department at a slower rate; and throw in the fact that most denim in larger sizes is made of the thin, inexpensive, super-stretchy skinny fabric that bags out and—worse—rips in the inner thighs. At least, that’s what my research told me (and what I’ve experienced personally!) when I set out to make a limited run of high-end plus-size jeans with 3×1 this summer. And it’s what Maggie Winter and Jac Cameron, co-founders of AYR, found when they decided to launch their first plus-size jean—which goes on sale today.

The New York-based brand—best known for chic essentials like denim, like camis and duster coats—has created what it says is the first premium plus-size jean. Period. “We wanted to explore an audience that’s been totally underserved in the premium market—because that’s bullshit,” says Winter, who also serves as AYR’s CEO. Cameron, the creative director, adds: “There really wasn’t anything with our aesthetic of classic elevation and luxury textiles. The brands that do carry denim in these categories… you wouldn’t look to them for inspiration.”

AYR One Love jeans, $195, ayr.com

The “One Love” jean, as it’s called, is modeled off of AYR’s best-selling skinny jean, with its slim cut and dark wash. It’ll be labeled in dress sizes (14, 16, and so on) in lieu of denim sizing (32, 34, et cetera) and will run from size 14 through 22. It’s not an “all-size” pair (i.e. the same style made in size 0 through 22) because they, “didn’t just start with size 6 or 8 jean and scale it up, we engineered a totally new fit.” It’ll retail for $195.

If you’re an AYR fan, you’ll find that a few key features from the main line made it onto the “One Love” jean. “Little tricks of the trade that I’ve built up over the course of time [as the head of denim at Calvin Klein and now the creative director of AYR] to make sure that we elongated the leg and made a really flattering waistband,” says Cameron. The style has a 28-inch inseam because it’s the brand’s top-selling measurement. “Fashion is traditionally fit on a 5’9” fit model, but the average woman is 5’4”,” says Winter. “Most of our business is done in a 28-inch inseam.”

The special focuses on this plus-sizes expansion? Excellent fit, a true mid rise, and fabric that holds its shape: “We asked our fit models to bring in their favorite jeans and what started as a show-and-tell quickly became a feedback session of grievances,” says Winter. “The wishes were a jean that doesn’t have an itty bitty rise that they had to yank the waist up on, a jean that wouldn’t get baggy in the knees throughout the day, and one would last the test of time. One fit model said she was buying 3 or 4 pairs of one jean because she knew that she could probably only get three months of wear, maybe even less.” Wishes granted!

Kendall Jenner's Balenciaga Denim Jacket Confuses the Internet


Kendall Jenner is stylish, no question about it—she wears jeans that look like ankle bracelets!—but we’re not so sure about her latest fashion choice. While rocking a denim-on-denim lewk, Ms. Jenner held the front of her jean jacket closed in a way that immediately prompted the question, “What’s happening?”

Kendall, is your jacket too big? Did you, as some outlets suggested, invent a new way to button outerwear? Is this a new trend?

The answer, is turns out (per PopSugar!) is that Kendall was likely wearing a denim jacket from Balenciaga that, yes, buttons on the side. So, it’s supposed to be asymmetrical. And it costs $1,150.

For that much you could buy around 200 Venti Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

For that much you could buy about 125 Essie nail polishes.

For that much you could ask for the amount in ones, put them all in your bathtub, and take a money bath.

Look, we get it. On the one hand, fashion is supposed to innovate and make the old new again and the people and brands at the forefront of a trend are always going to be make pricey items because they’re actually moving the sartorial conversation forward. But on the other hand, I literally spent an hour last night using a hair straightener to apply an iron-on patch to a fraying denim jacket that my mom bought at Banana Republic before I was born, so we’re just…confused…about why the world (or Kendall Jenner) needs a jean jacket that even have its buttons in the right place.

The patch on my jacket, by the way, looks great, and Kendall/Balenciaga, I’m happy to show you my methods, if y’all ever need any pointers.
