Demi Lovato Clarifies Her Sexuality in Her New Documentary


In early September, Demi Lovato sent Twitter into a tizzy when she was spotted holding hands with a woman, DJ-producer Lauren Abedini, in Disneyland. Lovato’s fans, aptly nicknamed Lovatics, were naturally stoked for their queen; as long as she was happy, that was all that mattered. But of course these photos brought out critics, one who even said it was “bullshit” Lovato wasn’t openly addressing her sexuality. It didn’t take long for the pop star to clap back at this, saying that her naysayers should watch her YouTube documentary (Simply Complicated) if they’re so curious about her sexuality.

Well, that documentary dropped today, and, yes, Lovato addresses her sexuality in it—head on. During a conversation with her stylist, Avo Yermagyan, Lovato reveals she’s on a dating app for both men and women. (The app, if you’re curious, is called Raya, a notoriously exclusive platform stacked with celebrity users.)

“I am open to human connection, so whether that’s through a male or female, it doesn’t matter to me,” she said. “I do like athletes; there is something sexy about someone putting in all of their physical strength into their passion.“

These quotes certainly add more insight into Lovato’s personal life while also staying true to her policy about labels. “Just because I refuse to label myself for the sake of a headline doesn’t mean I’m not going to stand up for what I believe in,” she said on Twitter in September.

Lovato also addressed this topic in a recent interview with Glamour.com. “I think eventually I’ll talk more about [my sexuality], but I think it was cool to be able to put it out there and leave it for what it is and be open,” she said. “It was refreshing to be able to have control over the narrative, and release this information on my own.”

Damn straight. Hopefully now people will drop this conversation and just let Lovato live. She deserves that. We all do.

Demi Lovato Says She Wasn't Allowed to See Her Sister Until She Got Sober


Demi Lovato has been vocal about her struggles with mental health, body-image issues, and substance abuse, and now she’s opening up even more about the powerful reason she decided to get clean over five years ago. The defining moment: her parent’s ban on seeing her sister, Madison De La Garza, until she got sober.

According to Daily Mail, Lovato spoke about her struggles with addiction and her success with treatment during an interview on the U.K.’s Jonathan Ross Show this week. “I went through some tough times and went to treatment for some struggles that I had and now I’ve come out the other side, and I use my stories to help others and inspire them to get the help they need.”

Demi added: “There were a few [interventions by family and friends] but the final one, everyone was like, ‘We are no longer going to leave, we are leaving.’ That was the moment when I thought, ‘OK I really need to get help and get sober.'”

The fact that her mother and stepfather wouldn’t let her see her sister, though, was what truly motivated her to change her lifestyle.

“This time I knew… I had hit rock bottom and I just needed to do this for myself. I knew that I had a lot of life ahead of me but one of the main reasons of getting sober was so that I could be around my little sister because my [mom] and dad [said I couldn’t be around her] if I was doing stuff. So I got the help I needed and now I co-own a treatment center,” she said.

Lovato celebrated her fifth year anniversary of being sober back in March and has spoken about mental health at the DNC and opened up about her self-esteem issues and how she deals with them.

The 25-year-old was recognized this week for her work in promoting conversations around mental health by being named the mental health ambassador for Global Citizen, a social media initiative for social change.

Demi Lovato Is Now a Mental Health Ambassador for Global Citizen


Demi Lovato is a vocal crusader for a number of important causes: body positivity, self-esteem, and her sobriety (going on six years!), among others. But one thing she’s been extra passionate about is mental health. She told Glamour last year that she considers speaking out about mental illness and addiction is her “true purpose,” and been active and visible in leading reform for it. Case in point: she’s partial owner of a rehab facility she once went to for treatment, led a series of wellness conferences, started a program that helps people who can’t afford treatment get it, and shown up at Congress to lobby for mental health reform.

Now, Lovato’s continuing her work on an even larger scale: she’s the mental health ambassador for Global Citizen, the “social action platform” that uses Twitter, Instagram, and other social media as a road for social change.

She announced the news on her Instagram on Sunday afternoon—and according to the caption, the first thing on her agenda seems to be a pilot program with Save the Children in Iraq.

According to the second Insta in the slideshow, Lovato will be taking Save the Children’s HEART program—which focuses on healing, psychological support, and “basic education through the arts”—to kids who have been displaced in the Middle Eastern country. “My hope is that this program can bring a bit of comfort to those who need the most,” she wrote. “This isn’t about politics or race or religion. It’s simply about humanity and protecting one another.”

Such a cool cause—and what a perfect champion for it.

Demi Lovato Isn't Here for the Speculation About Her Sexuality


Last week Twitter had a full-on meltdown when Demi Lovato was spotted holding hands with a woman, DJ-producer Lauren Abedini, in Disneyland. With Lovato’s relationship with UFC fighter Luke Rockhold newly finished, many people think Abedini is her new girlfriend—but that’s only speculation at this point. Lovato hasn’t said anything about Abedini or her specific sexuality—she’s only spoken in generalities—and that’s intentional.

In a new interview with Pride Source, the “Body Say” singer explains why she prefers to keep her sexuality private despite being such an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community.

“I just feel like everyone’s always looking for a headline and they always want their magazine or TV show or whatever to be the one to break what my sexuality is,” Lovato said. “I feel like it’s irrelevant to what my music is all about. I stand up for the things that I believe in and the things that I’m passionate about, but I like to keep my personal life as private as possible when it comes to dating and sexuality and all that stuff just because it has nothing to do with my music. Unfortunately, we live in a world where everyone is trying to get that soundbite and I am purposefully not giving the soundbite.”

That being said, she’s open to discussing her sexuality—on her own terms. Lovato says she answers “a lot of questions” people have about her in her new documentary, Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, including some about her sexuality.

Of course, Lovato never has to address this issue if she doesn’t want to. Sexuality is a very fluid and complicated thing, and how people choose to deal with it is private and personal. That doesn’t change for Lovato just because she’s a public figure. It’s none of our business. Her happiness is the only thing that matters.

Lovato’s documentary debuts October 12 on YouTube.

Demi Lovato Held Hands With a Woman Over the Weekend, and Twitter Is Thrilled


Demi Lovato has one of the strongest and most loyal fanbases ever—that’s why they’re called Lovatics. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer receives thousands of messages from them daily advocating for her health and happiness. They just want Lovato to be fulfilled, no matter what, in any form that takes: releasing music, not releasing music, dating a man, dating a woman, dating someone gender nonconforming, or being single. It’s all good as long as Lovato puts herself first.

So it’s no surprise that photos of Lovato holding hands with a woman, DJ-producer Lauren Abedini (according to PerezHilton), in Disneyland over the weekend delighted these diehards. Granted, these pictures don’t mean Lovato is dating Abedini—but that didn’t stop Twitter from doing happy dances in 140 characters or less.

Some of these tweets label Abedini as Lovato’s alleged new “girlfriend,” but the majority of them are just messages from fans who are elated to see her being so open and authentic. Of course, this is how Lovato’s been her entire career. She’s spoken candidly in the past about her former addictions, body image issues, mental health struggles, and, yes, her sexuality. Lovato told People magazine in June 2016 that she doesn’t think sexual preferences require a label. “As humans, it’s just about a connection with someone,” she said.

Plus, there’s her 2015 song, “Cool for the Summer,” which many people believe is about sexual experimentation. Lovato herself hinted to this in 2015, during an interview with Alan Carr, when she said, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimentation at all.”

Regardless of what these photos mean, it’s clear Lovato’s in a really great place in her life. Her Instagram is filled with posts about self-love, and she’s releasing some of her rawest music to date, like “You Don’t Do It For Me Anymore,” a track that’s actually about breaking up with her former self—not a significant other. “I see the future without you / The hell was I doing in the past / Now that I’ve learned all about you / A love just like ours wouldn’t last,” she sings.

What we do hope lasts, however, is Lovato living life on her own terms. Frankly, that’s how we all should be.
