Jonathan Van Ness Is Essie’s First Nonfemale Brand Ambassador

It’s been a long road, but we’re finally starting to see beauty brands put their money where their mouths are when it comes to inclusion. From truly expansive shade ranges to body-hair representation in ads, brands are painting a realistic picture of the people who actually use their products. This audience is expanding to include men and nonbinary people as well (of course, that doesn’t always go as planned).

The latest brand to join the party: Essie, who just announced its first ever nonfemale brand ambassador, Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness. The partnership is here just in time for Pride Month. Can you believe?

He shared the news in an Instagram post this morning, June 6, celebrating individuality and pride. “I’m so honored to announce I’ve teamed up with @essie as their first nonfemale ambassador in celebration of Pride! For me, polish has always been a form of self-expression. Right now that means this mosaic rainbow mani moment. Wearing it proud!”

JVN has been known to rock a rainbow mani, and in the Essie campaign he shows off a custom rainbow manicure that mirrors his signature style of painting only a few nails.

In the comments of JVN’s Instagram, many left messages saying they were so excited to share with their sons. “I’m showing this to my son, Sam, who was bullied last fall for wearing nail polish to his kindergarten class. THANK YOU!!” writes one Twitter user.

Campaigns like this show that beauty is so much more than skin-deep. This line of thinking is central to Van Ness’s beauty philosophy, who focuses on how Queer Eye’s subject’s feel in addition to how they look, no matter their gender. Hopefully, a JVN beauty line is in the works, but until then we’re excited for this Essie partnership!

Emma Stone Is Louis Vuitton's Newest Ambassador

Emma Stone is on a roll right now with her career. She’s coming off a wave of praise and publicity from her Oscar-winning performance in La La Land, a role that was followed up this year by another well-reviewed performance in Battle of the Sexes, in which she plays tennis legend Billie Jean King. Now, she has even more news for us: Stone is officially the new face of Louis Vuitton.

According to Page Six, the French brand had been pursuing the actress for nearly a year. But apparently biding her time paid off for Stone: according to a source in Page Six, she’s in for a two-year deal that will pay out between $6 and $10 million (which, um, how do we get that gig?).

Stone’s in good company, too: she joins Alicia Vikander and Selena Gomez as official ambassadors to the brand.

The brand’s creative director, Nicolas Ghesquière, confirmed the deal in an Instagram Saturday night. Posting a picture of himself and Stone,
he wrote, “I am truly happy #emmastone is joining #louisvuitton today as a new ambassador ?”

The Louis Vuitton Instagram account also confirmed the news with a picture of Ghesquière and Stone, who will appear in print and television advertisements and wear the brand on red carpets as part of her ambassadorship. They wrote, “#LouisVuitton is delighted to announce Emma Stone as the latest ambassador for the Maison. A muse and friend of Louis Vuitton Women’s Artistic Director @NicolasGhesquiere, Emma prepares to walk the red carpet for her latest movie #BattleoftheSexes in a #LVSS18 gown.”

Her first event as a face of the brand? She wore that gorgeous Louis Vuitton dress in the pics above on Saturday night to the 2017 BFI London Film Festival—and looked gorgeous:

Demi Lovato Is Now a Mental Health Ambassador for Global Citizen

Demi Lovato is a vocal crusader for a number of important causes: body positivity, self-esteem, and her sobriety (going on six years!), among others. But one thing she’s been extra passionate about is mental health. She told Glamour last year that she considers speaking out about mental illness and addiction is her “true purpose,” and been active and visible in leading reform for it. Case in point: she’s partial owner of a rehab facility she once went to for treatment, led a series of wellness conferences, started a program that helps people who can’t afford treatment get it, and shown up at Congress to lobby for mental health reform.

Now, Lovato’s continuing her work on an even larger scale: she’s the mental health ambassador for Global Citizen, the “social action platform” that uses Twitter, Instagram, and other social media as a road for social change.

She announced the news on her Instagram on Sunday afternoon—and according to the caption, the first thing on her agenda seems to be a pilot program with Save the Children in Iraq.

According to the second Insta in the slideshow, Lovato will be taking Save the Children’s HEART program—which focuses on healing, psychological support, and “basic education through the arts”—to kids who have been displaced in the Middle Eastern country. “My hope is that this program can bring a bit of comfort to those who need the most,” she wrote. “This isn’t about politics or race or religion. It’s simply about humanity and protecting one another.”

Such a cool cause—and what a perfect champion for it.

CoverGirl Just Named Issa Rae As Its New Ambassador

Issa Rae is the success story we need right now. After gaining a rabid following on YouTube with her web series, “Awkward Black Girl,” (still, incredibly, going by the handle “actingrl112”), the actress took over HBO with her critically acclaimed series, Insecure. That all sounds like a lot of high-minded accolades—and it is—but it’s really all thanks to Rae’s knack for nailing the details. She calls out both the absurd and bittersweet moments in our day to day. Now, she’s just been named CoverGirl’s newest ambassador—and she’s the perfect choice for this significant role.

Fans of Rae probably remember that her “Awkward Black Girl” character came from her own experience, heightened to really emphasize the absurdity of the things we do. But speaking to her real life on Instagram, Rae explained just how important of a move this is for black women young and old. “I remember being an awkward black girl in high school, reading the pages of my favorite magazines, casually flipping through @COVERGIRL ads, singing their slogan in my head,” she wrote. “Never EVER in my life did I imagine I’d be one. I am SO honored and SO excited for what’s to come.”

In CoverGirl’s announcement, a spokesperson for the brand told us that they saw what we all see: “With her characteristic wit and charm, unique observations on life and culture, and outspoken but relatable nature, Issa truly embodies the CoverGirl spirit of inclusive self-expression, inspiring people to embrace what makes them unique and confidently represent that to the world.” Speaking to the power of makeup, Rae said that, “My character is ever-evolving, and makeup is a tool to help transform my persona—whether for a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life.”

She added: “Becoming a CoverGirl means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways. This has been a major part of my personal journey, and a message that I want to share with others.”

As anyone who’s seen Insecure can attest, the series revolves around portraying her experience 100 percent authentically. And with CoverGirl’s growing portfolio of ambassadors—like Muslim beauty blogger Nura Afia and YouTube makeup guru James Charles—Rae’s addition proves the brand is continuing to push for genuine, diverse role models.
