The Bachelor Season 23 Finale Recap: Cassie Makes Her Final Decision

Caution: Spoilers for the finale of The Bachelor, as well as The Bachelorette announcement, are ahead.

The action picks right back up with Colton knocking on Cassie’s door and asking to talk. He says it was so hard watching her leave that he’s “sacrificed everything” to be with her.

“Sorry…what?” she replies. This is off to a good start.

Colton reveals that he broke up with Tayshia and Hannah. Cassie smiles and puts her hand over her mouth to cover it. Colton pushes on, telling her he doesn’t need an engagement. He’s happy to take the relationship day-by-day, if that’s what she wants. “I’m so nervous right now,” she answers. “What? This is crazy. This is really crazy.”

Cassie repeats what she’s been saying, loud and clear, all along: She’s not on the same page as him, and he should pursue other women if he wants a serious commitment.

Nope, Colton says. “Sacrifice is what you do when you love somebody.” (Pause for a quick soap box: I know every relationship is different, and you can’t compare them, and blah blah blah. But the biggest thing I’ve ever had to sacrifice for my husband is the hours I lost going to a Phish concert for him. I’ll never get that Saturday back, but my point is this: Love doesn’t have to be hard, nor does that make it somehow greater or more passionate. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.)

Whatever, this seems to work for Cassie. Now secure, Colton tells her about the fence jump, but she just giggles and changes the conversation. Cassie, I don’t think you’re fully appreciating the Drama of this moment! They literally lost Colton. The Portuguese police were almost called!

Now that Cassie’s giving him a second chance, Colton has another bombshell: His family is waiting to meet them in Spain, if she’ll go. She agrees, adding, “This is so weird!”

Colton meets up with his family first, and right away—before anyone gets a chance to talk—he announces that he’s no longer a virgin. They all laugh. After a beat too long, Colton tells them he was just joking. Good one, Colton. Then he gives them the real breakdown: There’s only one woman here to meet them this week. Oh, and she broke up with me. Oh, and she’s not sure if she loves me or not.

Colton’s family is skeptical, to say the least. Cassie, meanwhile, is nervous to meet them because, hey, it turns out having to explain to a mom why you’re not in love with her son is pretty awkward.

All things considered, the visit goes OK. Colton’s mom does lightly suggest that maybe he should be with someone who reciprocates his feelings. Colton, however, is all, Nope. No doubts. Cassie is IT. I am IN LOVE. I stick by my DECISIONS. I am TOTALLY OK with her being ambivalent about her feelings. Man, all those Bird Box memes are right:

The next day, Colton and Cassie have a date. She keeps using words like “nervous” and “anxious” to describe how she’s feeling; that said, she finally admits she loves him. (Only to the camera, though, not to Colton.) They have a Serious Chat™, during which Cassie admits she’s not freaked out about Colton so much as the idea of commitment. Her last ex was controlling, and she doesn’t want to lose her freedom again. “I want us to do what’s best for us,” Colton replies. He says he wants them to have their own hobbies, interests, friends, etc. Basically, “I want you to live your life.” It’s amazing where we’re at in society that Colton saying the most basic thing—that he wants her to have friends and other interests—is presented as swoon-worthy.

The Bachelor Season 23, Episode 11 Recap: Will Colton and Cassie End Up Together?

Let’s get right into The Bachelor recap, because there’s so much to discuss. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

Aside from a brief montage of the season’s biggest moments, tonight’s episode picks up with Colton’s famed fence jump. It’s hard to tell what’s going on, it’s so dark and the cameras are so shaky. It’s The Blair Witch Project—but instead of a Maryland witch exacting her revenge upon hapless campers, it’s Chris Harrison running around the Portuguese countryside yelling, “Colton?”

“Colton?”

“Colton!”

A van full of producers drives up. They’re on the case, giving play-by-play walkie talkie updates. It’s like Live PD, but instead of brave police men and women arresting criminals it’s a producer saying, “I think we should go back and look in the brush more?”

“It’s 11:40 at night!” Chris Harrison tells someone on the phone. At first I think maybe he’s complaining that it’s past his bedtime—those roses can’t hand themselves out—but then he adds that they’ll have to call the police if Colton doesn’t turn up in another 20 or 30 minutes.

Ooh, maybe this really is Live PD.

Never mind, the producers in the van found Colton walking on the side of the road. “Are you okay?” a producer asks as she grabs his arm to get him out of the way of an oncoming car. “Don’t touch me,” he snipes back. “No, I’m not okay.”

When Chris—out of breathe, aw—catches up with Colton, the Bachelor says he’s “done with this shit.” Chris, correctly, is like, Sir, you can’t just walk to the airport. At least get in the car. Colton repeats that he’s done with the whole thing. Done done. When he finally gets in the car, Colton cries because he’s been “reminded enough times” that he’s “not enough.”

“Every time I put myself out there I get rejected,” he says. Um, tell that to Tia. Or, I don’t know, all the women you’ve dumped this season. You want the one woman who rejected you—it doesn’t take a full 40-minute therapy session to figure that one out.

The next morning, Chris Harrison checks in with Colton. “Last night was wild,” he jokes. Colton says he needed time alone, because “any time something good happens to me, or for me, it’s followed by something bad.” (Again, can we get Tia’s thoughts on this?)

He thinks Cassie left because she’s confused about him still dating two other women, so he needs to fix that. “Do you really think that’s what it is?” Chris asks, correctly. “What if the bottom line is she’s just not that into you?”

Colton is all, Nahhh, she loves me. She’s just too scared to admit it. Sure, Colton. Sure.

Time to break up with Tayshia, I guess. He shows up at her room and makes her just sit there, confused, while he sighs and looks at the ground. “You’re incredible,” he finally says, before dropping the bomb that he loves Cassie. She replies with a pursed lip and a simple “mmhmm” that says it all. “Can we talk without all these cameras?” she asks. They go into her room, but the mics stay on. (Thank God. The inevitable closed-door-microphone-on conversation scene is always a highlight on any reality show.) Nothing too juicy though—they just cry. At one point, Colton opens the door just wide enough to allow the cameras to see him hugging her goodbye.

When we return from commercial, Tayshia’s in the studio with Chris looking ab-so-lutely fantastic. She says it hurt to hear he was in love with Cassie, but she knows it must have been hard for him to admit that. Chris points out that she was mainly taking care of him during the breakup, when it’s usually the other way around. “I know that I deserve a lot,” she says. If Colton loves someone else, well, that’s his journey.

When Colton joins her on stage, Tayshia asks what was missing. He says it’s not really something missing in their relationship, but rather what he had with Cassie. “I just wish the best for you,” she says. “I hope you’re happy.”

The Bachelor Colton Underwood Has a Lot to Say About Cassie and That Fence Jump

Heads up: Spoilers for the most recent episode of The Bachelor are ahead.

“Holy f–k, he’s gone,” is most likely something Chris Harrison never thought he’d say on this—or any—season of The Bachelor. Actually, Colton, a franchise staple since last spring, probably didn’t think he’d run off into the Portuguese countryside looking to escape the cameras either. But love on reality TV will do that to you—especially when it’s not reciprocated.

Love him or leave him, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for the fence-jumping former football player when he poured his heart out to Cassie, only to have her admit she’s not “in love” with him and doesn’t think she can get there. The whole thing is a mess, so it’s no wonder Colton felt like his only option was to hop a fence and go rogue.

But what about Tayshia and Hannah G.? Will Colton—who’s said he wants to be engaged from day one—propose to either of them? Or will he try to get Cassie back before she heads home to the states? With a week to go before we get those answers, Colton sat down with Glamour to talk about the details of the fence jump, and whether he wishes he would have listened to all those warning signs. “You haven’t even seen it all yet,” he teases.

OK, we must talk about the fence before anything else. Did you get splinters? How did you know you could even make it over?

Colton Underwood: It was metal, so I didn’t get splinters. To be honest, I wasn’t even thinking about not making it over. It was the last thing on my mind. I’m just very happy I stuck the landing and didn’t fall ungracefully over it. I’m very happy about how the actual performance of the jump went. [Laughs]

Did you hurt yourself at all? And how long after you jumped over the gate did the producers find you?

Colton: I didn’t hurt myself. And I was gone for quite a bit. Hours.

Do you regret scaring Chris and the producers by disappearing for so long?

Colton: No, I think in that moment I needed time to myself. I needed to sit and process everything. You guys don’t get to see too much behind the scenes, but you’re always sort of around producers and TVs. You’re always talking to somebody, so to have space, to have time to yourself, was much needed in that moment.

You don’t like talking about regrets—but now that we know what happens with Cassie, do you wish you had listened more to Katie and Kirpa?

Colton: No, because those two aren’t in the relationship with Cassie [and me]. You can only speak from your experiences, and it was a lot of she said/she said and I heard it from this, I heard it from that…no one actually heard it. I think one thing I realized is I have to follow my heart and trust my gut and think, how does this person make me feel? I didn’t see any red flags in any of my relationships. I really didn’t.

But do you understand why some viewers might be angry with Cassie for getting to this point and then saying she’s not ready? Especially because you’ve said it was your biggest fear all along.

Colton: Yeah, I think everybody goes through this in their own way. There’s no right way to really do this. I could see why people’s opinions are probably going to be like, “So why did you say you didn’t say that when you weren’t really there?” I think that’s what was probably most frustrating about that night for me too—putting my heart out there and breaking every unwritten Bachelor rule that there is of laying it all out there and fighting for somebody. It was tough.
