The Bachelor Season 23, Episode 9 Recap: So That's Why Colton Jumped the Fence

There’s so much that happens this episode of The Bachelor—the much-anticipated fence jump, a surprise cameo from Cassie’s dad, Colton’s first overnight date, to name a few—so let’s just jump right in, shall we? Spoilers ahead, obviously.

Things kick off with Colton and Chris Harrison catching up. For a hot second, it seems like they’re going to have “the talk.”

“I have an idea of what happens in a fantasy suite,” Colton says, not at all convincingly.

“Thank God,” Chris answers, maybe a little too quickly.

Colton then assures Chris (and us viewers) that if the situation is right and everyone’s in love, he’s gonna do it this week. Or, as he puts it, “make love.”

“Enjoy your week,” Chris says as they part ways. “Congratulations!”

With that, they’re all off to Portugal. Cheers.

Once everyone lands in Europe, the women reveal their priorities for the week. Tayshia’s ready to “explore” being physical with Colton. Cassie wants to use this time to figure out her feelings. And the first thing on Hannah’s to-do list is the fantasy suite. As for Colton, he seems really, really excited about maybe-possibly losing his virginity.

That’s good news, I guess, for Tayshia, who has the first date of the week. “I hope today has in store a lot of new firsts for us,” she insinuates. Before they can get to that, though, they must get through the rest of the date which starts with a helicopter ride. During it, they talk about the super sexy topic of Portugal’s main exports. Colton jokes that it’s extra virgin olive oil, to which Tayshia quips, “That’s how I like ’em!”

The virgin innuendos don’t end there. After the helicopter takes them to a castle—or fort, maybe?—the two sip on champagne and talk about all the things they’ve done together. “What’s something you haven’t done yet?” Tayshia asks. Colton yells back, “Fantasy suites, baby!!!” To my amazement, she continues with the date. In all seriousness, though, Colton says he’s just excited to have intimate conversations with all the women this week, whether or not that involves losing his virginity. Sure.

Before the commercial break, Tayshia assures us viewers that she’s totally ready to “take that next step” with Colton. Then, when we return from the break, she reiterates that she’s only intimate with someone she loves, and she’s in love with Colton. I appreciate and yet am horrified by the amount of times the producers have asked this women to confirm that, yes, a sexual encounter with Colton would be consensual. At this point, I’m half expecting her to show up with a notarized statement stating, “I want to have sex with Colton.”

We finally get to the dinner portion of their date, to which Tayshia wears a dress that requires all the boob tape available in Portugal. It looks fantastic. Colton can’t keep his eyes off her chest, though that’s partially because she keeps fussing with her dress. She asks him to keep an eye out in case a boob pops out, and Colton is like, “YUP.”

They talk, yet again, about Colton’s virginity and the night ahead. Tayshia tells him that she waited to have sex—she lost her virginity to her ex-husband—so she understands the importance of the situation. Then she reveals that a year into her marriage her husband cheated, which she says taught her the value of intimacy even more. Colton promises that if they are endgame, he’ll never cheat. (I mean, dude, that should be a given—but a sweet sentiment.)

Colton presents Tayshia with a key to the fantasy suite, and she says yes. Cue some corny music as Colton talks about his sexual prowess. “As men, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves to perform well,” Colton says. “….how hard can it be?” Don’t worry, Colton assures us, he’s experienced in other ways. He’s done basically everything but, lest we question his ability.

The Bachelor Colton Underwood Has a Lot to Say About Cassie and That Fence Jump

Heads up: Spoilers for the most recent episode of The Bachelor are ahead.

“Holy f–k, he’s gone,” is most likely something Chris Harrison never thought he’d say on this—or any—season of The Bachelor. Actually, Colton, a franchise staple since last spring, probably didn’t think he’d run off into the Portuguese countryside looking to escape the cameras either. But love on reality TV will do that to you—especially when it’s not reciprocated.

Love him or leave him, you couldn’t help but feel sorry for the fence-jumping former football player when he poured his heart out to Cassie, only to have her admit she’s not “in love” with him and doesn’t think she can get there. The whole thing is a mess, so it’s no wonder Colton felt like his only option was to hop a fence and go rogue.

But what about Tayshia and Hannah G.? Will Colton—who’s said he wants to be engaged from day one—propose to either of them? Or will he try to get Cassie back before she heads home to the states? With a week to go before we get those answers, Colton sat down with Glamour to talk about the details of the fence jump, and whether he wishes he would have listened to all those warning signs. “You haven’t even seen it all yet,” he teases.

OK, we must talk about the fence before anything else. Did you get splinters? How did you know you could even make it over?

Colton Underwood: It was metal, so I didn’t get splinters. To be honest, I wasn’t even thinking about not making it over. It was the last thing on my mind. I’m just very happy I stuck the landing and didn’t fall ungracefully over it. I’m very happy about how the actual performance of the jump went. [Laughs]

Did you hurt yourself at all? And how long after you jumped over the gate did the producers find you?

Colton: I didn’t hurt myself. And I was gone for quite a bit. Hours.

Do you regret scaring Chris and the producers by disappearing for so long?

Colton: No, I think in that moment I needed time to myself. I needed to sit and process everything. You guys don’t get to see too much behind the scenes, but you’re always sort of around producers and TVs. You’re always talking to somebody, so to have space, to have time to yourself, was much needed in that moment.

You don’t like talking about regrets—but now that we know what happens with Cassie, do you wish you had listened more to Katie and Kirpa?

Colton: No, because those two aren’t in the relationship with Cassie [and me]. You can only speak from your experiences, and it was a lot of she said/she said and I heard it from this, I heard it from that…no one actually heard it. I think one thing I realized is I have to follow my heart and trust my gut and think, how does this person make me feel? I didn’t see any red flags in any of my relationships. I really didn’t.

But do you understand why some viewers might be angry with Cassie for getting to this point and then saying she’s not ready? Especially because you’ve said it was your biggest fear all along.

Colton: Yeah, I think everybody goes through this in their own way. There’s no right way to really do this. I could see why people’s opinions are probably going to be like, “So why did you say you didn’t say that when you weren’t really there?” I think that’s what was probably most frustrating about that night for me too—putting my heart out there and breaking every unwritten Bachelor rule that there is of laying it all out there and fighting for somebody. It was tough.
