This Is Exactly How Kim Kardashian Keeps Her Platinum Blond Hair From Breaking

It’s only a small exaggeration to say that each day of Fashion Week feels like approximately eight years. Its packs a lot in—so the fact that Kim Kardashian going platinum is still a shining, vibrant memory is just a testament to how great her silvery new color looks. Also memorable: the shock as the truth came out that this was truly, actually, the real deal. No Kylie Jenner wig here, or pinned back hair for a faux Kendall bob. Kardashian had taken the plunge, and emerged with the whitest hair possible. The next question on our lips? How she was going to keep it on her head.

Most people who’ve gone platinum will tell you, it’s no easy upkeep. As cool as it looks, bleach leaves most hair fried, crunchy, and at risk of breaking off with the breeze. So the heat was on to see how Kardashian handled the damage, and as it turns out, her hair savior might just be the cheapest thing in the Kardashian-West hair arsenal. Crazily enough for the multi-billionaire, it’s a $20 drugstore hair treatment—the Nexxus Emergecee Protein Treatment.

That said, she didn’t use it in the typical way (at home, hair marinating in a huge towel, in front of a TV show). According to Byrdie, Kardashian used her time in New York to swing by the Nexxus salon for its signature treatment.

Per the brand, the treatment uses a high concentration of proteins to deliver collagen and elastin and strengthen your hair. In life post-bleach, that’s especially important—the chemical does a number on your hair and literally breaks the bonds holding it together, so a combination of protein and hydration is essential to repair the damage and keep it healthy. Think of it like Olaplex (the post-bleach protein builder every hairstylist swears by), taken down just a couple of notches so you can use it at home. Even if you’ve never gone near bleach, we can vouch for it: the silky, soft feeling it leaves behind is no joke.

Kim Kardashian Just Dyed Her Hair Silver Blond for Fashion Week (And, Yes, It's Real)

Just as Kate Middleton always changes her hair before a baby announcement, Kim Kardashian completely overhauls hers for fashion week. (Funny enough, it could also be said that Kim K follows a royal baby reveal with her own royal baby news too.) Earlier this evening on Instagram, stylist Chris Appleton posted a boomerang of Keeks getting ready for New York Fashion Week—which officially kicks off tomorrow—and in the place of her most recent signature dark, center-parted, butt-length look (i.e. “Cher Hair”), Kim’s got bright, white-blond hair.

But before you’re quick to call wig on this one, we’ve got confirmation from Appleton that this dye job is in fact a very real deal.

“Taking Kim blond was something we both talked about for a long time,” Appleton told Glamour via email. “It’s a great transition from the super long hair trend Kim started last year in Paris. We wanted a whole new vibe and platinum is such an iconic look, I knew Kim would look amazing with it.” I mean, naturally. There’s plenty of history there to support that.

But what makes this shade different from her blonds of Fashion Weeks past is the undertones. Where her first big reveal back in 2015 was more of a warm, buttery platinum, this new take is pure Targaryen—cool, silver, and so blond it’s almost white.

“Silvery white is the more modern version of platinum blond,” Appleton said. “It’s a cooler, edgier tone.” Can’t argue there considering the recent number of celebrities who have all gone peroxide blond this summer.

We’ll have to see what this edgy new Kim has in store for us this week. She’s got (at least, if she doesn’t return to Paris) seven days of lewks ahead, so we’re sure this isn’t the last we’ll be writing about it.

'Cream Soda' Is the Transitional Blond Shade You'll See Everywhere This Fall

This summer was undoubtedly the season of platinum hair: Every time we opened Instagram, it seemed like a new celebrity had gone icy blond. Alas, fall is just around the corner—and even though platinum hair isn’t going anywhere, a few celebrities have debuted a less dramatic, more neutral shade of blond that transitions really well into the colder months. Behold, “cream soda blond.”

Elisabeth Moss‘s hairstylist Sunnie Brook used the term for the shade in an interview with Refinery29, and we can see why it’s called that: The color is a cooler take on a golden blond that falls between platinum’s frosty edge and the buttery blond that also popped up quite a bit this summer (remember Emma Stone’s new look from June?).

We’re starting to see takes on the shade crop up across the celeb and modeling world. See below for a few recent—and gorgeous—examples:

If you did go super-light this summer and feel like switching it up, it’s the perfect way to add some warmth and richness to your hair just in time for fall. The color’s also great for blending in darker roots with a lighter dye job—which means that A) time between appointments can be eked out a bit longer, and B) if you’re a blond wanting to go dark but not totally commit to it, this is an awesome way to test the waters. And, brunettes, it’s friendly for you, too: It’s a great way to lighten up without going full-on blond.
