Celebrity Hairstylist Justine Marjan on Her $21,159 Wedding Beauty Look


I wore an oversized hat Michael Costello made, so there was no need to add any other accessories. I really didn’t want to overdo the look; I wanted it to feel classic, timeless, and to have that beautiful Bianca Jagger influence. We were driving a convertible up the coast, so I wrapped my hair in a scarf to avoid it getting messy. I kept a smoothing brush in my bag, and brushed throughout the day.

My Bridal Skin Care Prep: $407

My biggest concerns are acne scars and texture, and I wanted my skin to have a healthy glow and plump finish the day of my wedding. The night before, I self-tanned using St. Tropez Self Tan Purity Water Gel ($44), then rinsed off in the morning and applied Nécessaire The Body Lotion ($25). On my face, I cleansed with Sonya Dakar Silver Clarifying Face Wash ($59), then used Cocokind Rosewater Facial Toner ($17) and Cocokind Glow Essence with Sea Grape Caviar ($18). I applied Biossance Squalane + Marine Algae Eye Cream ($54) and Sonya Dakar Detox Daily Moisturizer ($95), then used the Nurse Jamie NuVibe RX Amethyst Massaging Beauty Tool ($95) to help the products absorb and to lift and tighten my face.

My Bridal Beauty Treatments: free, but would have cost $15,069

I started my treatments about a month in advance; we planned our wedding in about six weeks, so we were rushed and eager to get everything done. A month before my wedding day, I saw Nurse Jamie for Botox and lasers (free, but would have cost $5,000). I usually only get Botox in my jaw for TMJ, but I trust Jamie’s opinion, so we also did my forehead for wedding photos. She also did tightening lasers. I honestly don’t know what they are, I just go in there and let her do her thing! She used her Uplift Massaging Beauty Roller ($69) tool on my face and also gave me one to use on my body, which I did every night leading up to the wedding. You use the roller on your legs and arms with moisturizer for about five minutes in the evenings, and it lifts and tightens your skin. It’s especially great for cellulite and increasing circulation. Then, I saw Sonya Dakar every two weeks for three months leading up to the wedding (free, but would have cost $10,000). Sonya is a legend, and has worked with the most iconic names in Hollywood. She had me on her Beauty Boot Camp treatment—we did her sculpting laser on my face to help my cheeks slim down and add natural contour, as well as her collagen laser. I also did microneedling and a peel with her to prep. I saw amazing results; I felt like I had cheekbones for the first time in my life. Overall, my face had a more lifted appearance and smoother, more even tone and texture.

My Wellness Routine: $1,847

I worked out with Train with Danny ($250 per session, about four sessions) once a week leading up to my wedding, and supplemented with my own gym workouts ($200 per month) in between. We did high intensity interval training together, and on my own I would do similar workouts on the FitOn app or cardio at the gym and  Y7 yoga classes ($30 per class, about four classes). I also did two lymphatic massage sessions the week before my wedding with Camila and Lais Perez ($250 per session, two sessions) to get rid of bloat, water weight, and tone my body. I started these massages just for the wedding but am hooked, and have gone regularly since. They are so good for circulation, stiffness, bloating, cellulite, and digestion. I also took daily doses of Olly Undeniable Beauty ($13) and Olly Flawless Complexion gummy vitamins ($14). These really help my skin clear up and my hair grow in thick and shiny.

My Bridal Nails: $100

Since we were eloping, we rushed to make decisions and I left my nails to the last minute. I was hoping my usual nail girl would be available, but she was out of town. I went to a local nail salon in Sherman Oaks called Qtie Nails ($100 for my manicure and pedicure)—the owner there is amazing. I asked for blue marble nails to go with the blue vintage car we were driving. They ended up with more of a tie-dye watercolor vibe, and I was really happy with it. I went for dip powder because I didn’t want to risk anything chipping or getting messed up.

My Bridal Fragrance: $295

I use The Harmonist perfume ($295). It smells warm, musky, and romantic. I opened it especially for my wedding, but loved it so much I’ve been wearing it since.

Jessamyn Stanley on Her $3,001 Beauty Routine


These days it’s nearly impossible to know what women are spending on the way they look. Someone with Instagram-flawless contouring might have honed her craft using the finest from the drugstore aisles, and the utterly makeup-free type might be spending thousands on laser treatments and serums. Enter our series What It Costs to Be Me, in which we’re asking interesting women for radical transparency.

Next up? Jessamyn Stanley, 32, yoga instructor, body-positivity activist, and author of Every Body Yoga, from Durham, North Carolina. Her grand total? $3,001.

“We live in a society that’s made us think self-care is self-indulgent, and that you should be constantly giving of yourself instead,” says Jessamyn Stanley. “I believe the reason we’re all here is to give of ourselves, but you can’t give from an empty cup.” She would know. The yoga instructor flies across the country teaching sold-out classes and giving inspiring talks on body positivity, inclusivity, and empowerment. But even in the midst of her hectic schedule, Stanley prioritizes taking care of herself—which can take the form of anything from “not being around people who are energy-draining” to luxuriating in a lengthy bubble bath.

Lately, she’s found solace in her skin-care routine. “I’ve finally gotten to a place with my skin where I’m like, ‘Okay, we’ve gotten to know each other.’ It’s taken a few decades, and it’s been up and down journey, but we’re here now.” Here, Stanley’s full regimen—along with the other beauty and wellness essentials she can’t live without.

My shower and bath routine: $125

I’m a staunch bath person, but I live in a world that requires I be more of a shower person. That said, I still like to have at least one to two baths every week. It’s a pretty big thing for me. When I’m traveling, I’ll specifically look for an Airbnb that has a bathtub, if I can. I can get really wired, and the best way for me to come back to reality is to find water as quickly as possible.

Um, screw highlighter. Because highlighter is important and I love it, but I don’t think I want to marry it. I’ll get down with some highlighter. Marry mascara because I have blond lashes, so putting on some mascara changes the game for me. I love Milk Makeup’s Kush Mascara. It feels natural and doesn’t go on too chunky, which is awesome. I hate when it feels like hairspray on your lashes. Then kill lipstick. I never wear lipstick. I’m a lip gloss gal. There are so many I like, but I love the Glossier one. It doesn’t have much color but it makes your lips look plump.

What’s your favorite emoji?

I love the yellow heart, honestly. It’s soft and not as aggressive as the red heart, but it’s like, “Love you, girl ?” or “Thank you ?.” I think it just works.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions, what would it be?

I hate that we’re all so judgmental about everyone’s beauty. I know that a part of this [Hollywood] world is about critiques and judging—and, you know, those red carpet shows that are like who wore it better? Did she rock this or did she not? But I know what it’s like to go on a red carpet and put yourself out there. To choose a dress and choose your hair and makeup, and then finally have it all come together and be like, “Oh, I feel great,” only to have people say you looked bad or say that it “didn’t work.” I think that’s annoying and lame. We should cut that out. Because if you’re going out in whatever you look like, you feel good. Most of the time you’re not leaving the house thinking, “Oh, I look terrible. I shouldn’t have worn this.”

Is that because you guys are coloring your hair often?

LM: Well, I have to color my hair because…you know. But Maude doesn’t.

MA: I’ll color my hair sometimes, and the Olaplex masks are good for that. But with the Bond Smoother, you can use right after you get out of the shower every day. That one is so good.

Which one of you takes the most time getting ready?

LM: I can be ready in, like, three minutes.

MA: Yeah, that’s definitely me. I like to relax and do my whole routine. I just take my time putting on makeup. I don’t really know why…

LM: She does a really good job. She does great eyeshadow and brows.

MA: Oh, yeah, I love doing my eyebrows.

LM: I don’t wear face makeup. Usually, I’ll put on mascara and that’s it. So I’m quick.

Maude, did you pick up any good tips from the Euphoria set? We can’t talk makeup without talking Euphoria makeup, because it’s incredible.

MA: Donni Davey, who did the makeup on Euphoria, was so good at doing foundation and glowy face makeup without it ever looking cakey. It never looks like makeup! I sort of just watched her do it, and the way she did my eyebrows. She’s amazing. Working on that show made me want to try more fun makeup looks.

If you had to pick a character’s makeup to embody from the show, whose would it be?

MA: Probably Maddy. Maddy’s got the best look. And Kat. I mean everyone has great makeup.

Question for you both: What’s one beauty trend you wish you’d never tried?

LM: Plucking my eyebrows really thin. Oh, and a perm! I had a perm. I have really curly hair, and for some reason I thought that it would lighten my hair. I don’t know why I would want it curlier, but I did.

MA: I wore a lot of eyeliner in middle school.
