A 'Beauty and the Beast' Prequel Is In the Works at Disney+. Here's Everything We Know

A tale as old as time, indeed. If you’ve been thinking you need more Beauty and the Beast in your life, Disney+ has you covered.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a prequel series is in the works starring Josh Gad and Luke Evans, who will be reprising their roles as LeFou and Gaston from the wildly popular 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast remake directed by Bill Condon.

Not many details are known at the moment (it doesn’t even have a title), but the limited series is supposedly going to be a six-episode musical event from Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Gad will also serve as a co-creator, writer, and producer.

Here’s everything we know so far about the Beauty and the Beast prequel series.

Disney

The cast. As mentioned, Gad and Evans will return as LeFou and Gaston. No word yet on whether Emma Watson or Dan Stephens will make appearances as Belle and the Beast, respectively.

The music. THR reports that talks are underway with composer Alan Menken, who also did the score for the 2017 film.

The length. While six episodes have been confirmed, there’s no more information on episode length.

The plot. Since the project is still in the early stages of development, we don’t know much about the storylines—other than that they will follow LeFou and Gaston’s adventures prior to the action in the 2017 film. One thing that could be interesting to explore is LeFou’s sexuality, which was implied in the film’s “exclusively gay moment” which was…pretty much nothing.

Condon previously explained in a now-deleted interview with Attitude that LeFou would be Disney‘s first gay character. “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” he reportedly said. “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it.”

Not so much, but maybe Gad will actually get a chance to delve deeper in the prequel series. However, if the news about the Love, Simon and Lizzie McGuire series are anything to go by, then maybe not.

HBO Max Is Making a ‘Practical Magic’ Prequel Series—Here’s Everything We Know

I consider Practical Magic to be one of the greatest (and perhaps underrated) Halloween movies around. So the news that HBO Max—the yet-to-launch streaming service that will also be home to Friends once it leaves Netflix—is developing a prequel is extremely good news. The story of sisters Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman) who are born with magical powers they try to avoid—until they can’t—is the perfect mix of comedy, drama, romance, and horror. Oh, and it features some extremely great hair.

Variety reports that the streaming platform has ordered a pilot for the one-hour show called Rules of Magic. It will center around siblings Jet, Franny, and Vincent Owens who have “abnormalities that have kept them isolated.” They soon discover that they are descended from a line of witches.

Here’s everything we know so far.

The source material is based on a book. The series will be based on the Alice Hoffman novels Rules of Magic and Practical Magic, the latter of which was also adapted for the 1998 movie.

The setting won’t be Massachusetts, where the 1998 film mostly took place. According to the Variety report, Rules of Magic will be set in 1960s New York City.

There’s a strong connection to the movie. Fans of Practical Magic, of course, remember Kidman and Bullock’s magically powerful aunts from the movie, where they were played by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing. Rules of Magic is basically the Franny and Jet origin story. As for their brother, Variety says he will leave “an unexpected legacy.”

The series’s writer has a history of developing strong female characters. Per Variety, the show will be written and produced by Jessica Jones creator Melissa Rosenberg.

The release date and cast are still unknown. The show is still in preproduction, so it’s unclear at this time when it will premiere—or who will be playing the main roles.

This post will be updated as new details emerge.

Game of Thrones Prequel: Everything We Know So Far

If you’re upset about Game of Thrones ending next year, we have some great news for you: HBO has officially green-lit a prequel to the acclaimed series. That’s right, my friends: We’re not finished with the world of Westeros just yet.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Jane Goldman, who’s penned action classics like Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, and Kick-Ass wrote the pilot episode for the prequel, from a story by both her and George R.R. Martin (who’s responsible for GoT‘s source material). Here’s everything else we know about the series so far. (We’ll update this post with more information as it comes in.)

1. The plot takes place thousands of years before Game of Thrones. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will chronicle the world’s descent from the “golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.” “Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know,” an official release from HBO reads.

2. The teleplay is credited to Goldman. She’ll also serve as the showrunner, which is awesome. Game of Thrones producer Vince Gerardi, as well as Damages and Bloodline co-creator Daniel Zelman, will also be involved with the series.

3. This will be the first of hopefully several GoT spin-offs. In May 2017, HBO revealed several writers were working with Martin on “successor shows.”

4. This prequel (and any other spinoffs) will most likely air a year or more after the final season. HBO’sprogramming president Casey Bloys said he’s open to doing anywhere between zero and five spinoffs. “Though probably more likely one. But we’ll see,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

We can’t wait!
