Every Single One of Katy Perry's VMAs 2017 Outfit Changes


Expectations were high for Katy Perry’s MTV Video Music Awards hosting debut on Sunday night—and not only because of all the news expected to break during the three-hour program: On top of all the presenting, joking, singing, and dancing that comes with the job description, we also anticipated the performer would bring her signature fashion for the occasion. After all, what’s one of the biggest nights in music without multiple outfit changes, each one more extravagant than the one before? Plus, Perry’s never been one to shy away from a good lewk.

The performer always delivers bold, bright, and ready-for-the-‘gram get-ups, whether she’s on stage or off. (Who can forget her denim-clad homage to Britney Spears at the 2014 VMAs?) And, true to her, ahem, reputation, the 2017 MTV VMAs were no different: Perry wore nine ensembles total, all of which were appropriately OTT and formidable contenders for a spot among the most memorable outfits in the award show’s history.

So, in honor of her first time hosting the program, we rounded up every single one of Perry’s instantly-iconic looks from the 2017 MTV VMAs. Check ’em all out, below.

To start the night, Perry took to the blue carpet in an elegant white gown by Stephane Rolland.

When it came time to hit the VMA stage, she opted for a sparkly space suit, to match the MoonPerson trophies that would be handed out throughout the night.

Perry addressed the pressure she feels to serve memorable looks throughout the show, going on to incorporate some instantly-recognizable costumes from television shows like The Handmaid’s Tale into her monologue.

Returning to the stage after the debut of Taylor Swift’s new music video, Perry appeared in a glittery, gauzy jumpsuit.

In a call-out to the Game of Thrones season finale, Perry donned a full Daenerys Targaryen costume, complete with her own “dragon.”

Finally, to close out the show (and to perform her song “Swish, Swish”), the singer slipped into a basketball-inspired bustier, layered over a white dress.

VMAs 2017: Here's the Complete List of Winners


MTV’s 2017 VMAs will certainly go down in TV history for many reasons, but especially for being the first music awards to do away with gendered categories. (MTV made the same move for the TV and Movie Awards earlier this year.) Not only that, but the statuette became a Moon Person rather than a Moon Man. Progress!

It remains to be seen whether this move will inspire other awards shows like the Grammys, Oscars, or Emmys to move toward gender-inclusive categories. And if the trend continues, will it lead to more parity across categories? Or will it be just another way for men to dominate awards? It wouldn’t be the MTV VMAs without a dramatic moment or two. But instead of feuds between musicians, this year it was Artists V. Trump—or at least, that’s what we took from these ten moments when stars made statements.

1. Cardi B Shouting Out Colin Kaepernick.

Performing a medley and accepting her Video Vanguard award, P!nk used her moment in the spotlight to make a fashionable statement.

6. Logic’s Message of Hope.

Following a moving speech from Kesha, Logic, Khalid, and Alessia Cara sang with suicide attempt survivors to send a powerful message about reaching out for help.

7. Jack Antonoff’s Proud Judaism.

If Neo-Nazis are gonna be anti-semitic on TV, well, Jack Antonoff is gonna be Jewish as hell on TV. Mazel tov on your new bling, Jack.

8. Transgender Members of Our Military on the VMAs Carpet and Stage.

Take that, Trump and everyone who wants to ban hardworking Americans who want to serve their country.

Reverend Robert Wright Lee, descendent of Southern Civil War general Robert E. Lee, put it plainly: making a hero out of Robert E. Lee is an act of white supremacy, and we should idolize, for instance, Heather Heyer instead. He then introduced Heather’s mother, Susan Bro, to present the award for Best Fight Against the System.

Fifth Harmony Called Out Camila Cabello During Their 2017 VMAs Performance

Fifth Harmony just shocked everyone watching the 2017 VMAs with their most direct attack on former member Camila Cabello to date.

The audience may have gotten excited for a minute when they saw five figures standing on stage in metallic puffy jackets at the top of their performance. But right before the music kicked in, the fifth figure (presumably meant to represent Camila) was literally thrown off the stage, doing a backwards dive right off the platform. Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui did not miss a beat, immediately thereafter busting into an epic performance that included everything from broken glass to rain and a beautiful split by Normani.

The blatant jab at Camila is somewhat surprising, especially considering Fifth Harmony has consistently shut down interviewers who ask about the former member of their group. They even side stepped conversation of their former member earlier in the night during the MTV VMA 2017 red carpet. The four members of the girl band artfully avoided an awkward question from Charlamagne Tha God, who asked if they would give their award to “a member who’s no longer in the group” if they were to win, and the girls went silent for just a beat too long. Thankfully, Normani broke the silence. “Well if we win for best choreography we’ll give it to our choreographer,” she said.

So while it may have seemed like the 5H girls would remain silent on Camila’s departure from here on out, they were clearly just saving their diss for later in the show—no words necessary. We’ll be watching to see if or how Camila responds.

Teyana Taylor Channels Janet Jackson’s 1995 MTV VMAs Look at This Year’s Awards

Teyana Taylor made jaws hit the floor at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards as the solo star of Kanye West’s “Fade” video—and this year, she’s doing the same by channeling an iconic artist: Janet Jackson.

Taylor showed up to the 2017 VMAs red carpet donning a white cropped scoopneck shirt and wide-leg black pants (which conveniently showed off her incredible six-pack abs, in case you’d forgotten how ripped she was since last year’s show), as well as a super-short bob haircut. But the entire look was much more than just a testament to her #goals-worthy physique; it was also a dead ringer for Janet Jackson circa 22 years ago, who wore almost the exact same ensemble—down to the hairstyle—at the 1995 VMAs.

Taylor’s getup also went beyond being just a style tribute. At the 1995 VMAs, Janet Jackson’s music video for “Scream” was awarded Best Choreography—and we think it’s no coincidence that at the 2017 show, Kanye’s “Fade” video (which Taylor stars in) has already won the same award. Practically identical, right?

This isn’t the first time that Taylor has made an intentional statement with her fashion choices, either. In November, while accompanying her husband, Cleveland Cavaliers player Iman Shupert, on a visit to the White House, Taylor donned an Afro, turtleneck, velvet pantsuit, and hoop earrings in an homage to Angela Davis, a Black Panther and civil rights activist. Taylor wore the politically charged outfit on the very same day that then president-elect Donald Trump was to visit the White House, making her ensemble a clear statement of protest.

As far as awards shows go, none are more over-the-top, eventful, and just plain old fun than the VMAs. Such can be extended to the VMAs red carpet, too, which never fails to deliver plenty of hair and makeup intrigue to keep us glued to our screens and flipping through Instagram faster than we can double tap.
