This Unicorn Vibrator Is a Beautiful, Tragic Creature


I told myself I would not buy the unicorn vibrator. For one, I had plenty of sex toys at home, and I didn’t need another one. For another, it was pretty silly-looking. I was at my local Babeland, sex toy shopping with my best friends, when I first spotted the Tokidoki Unicorn Wand, made in collaboration with pleasure company Lovehoney. Though tempted, I walked out of the store with $119 still sitting responsibly in my bank account.

But back home, I laid in my bed alone, horny, and somewhat stoned. “You will never regret spending money on a magic unicorn that gives you orgasms,” the evil part of my brain whispered. So I ordered the unicorn, curious as to whether using it would be as enthralling to me as looking at it was. Unfortunately, what I got was a beautiful creature who offered more in appearance than in function.

The unicorn arrived at my door in its shiny box, ready to be used. Like the classic Magic Wand vibrator, it needs to be plugged into a wall. At first, I took this to mean that the vibrator was antiquated. However, given how lazy I can be about charging my USB vibrators, I realized I can actually appreciate this quality. Sure, it may be clunky, but my unicorn will never tucker out on me. And it’s so pretty, I often leave it out after use, rather than tucking it away in a dresser. This unicorn likes to run free.

Unicorns and sex have gone together before. Where preferences are concerned, the term “unicorn” is both infamously distinct and potentially problematic. It usually refers to a female third in threesomes who is, often, able to swoop in and out of the couple’s relationship emotionlessly while causing absolutely no relationship problems or vocalizing any emotional or sexual desires of her own. She is good in bed and hot, but not, like, good enough and hot enough to break up any happy homes, almost like a robot. It’s beautiful to look at and is there when you want to spice things up (or when the battery is empty on the rest of all your vibrators), but I do not recommend purchasing it as your first foray into the wonderful world of wands vibrators. Buy an original Magic Wand, just for the sake of owning one. If you tend to get chilly, the Doc Johnson warming wand is one of my favorites.

As much as I want to look at it all the time, the unicorn is too complicated to be my main squeeze. Don’t buy it because you think it’s going to give you the best orgasm, but if you have $119 lying around and are as enamored with this cutie as I was, buy the unicorn for the sake of novelty. Sometimes it’s just nice to have pretty things.

With This Warming Vibrator, Winter Won't Be the Only Thing Coming


To say that I love this warming vibrator would not paint the full picture. After it made me orgasm, I wanted to snuggle up to the Doc Johnson iVibe Select iWand and slip into a beautiful slumber. Since I am catching feelings for this vibrator, I’m going to henceforth refer to it as my dragon, because winter is coming and so am I. (Tip: If you’re also a Game of Thrones fan but you want to associate a human with your new inanimate lover rather than a reptilian mythical creature, you could just call this sex toy “Jon” for Jon Snow, or “Dany” for Daenerys Targaryen, based upon your mood and preference.)

My dragon is pink, but this toy is also available in purple and black. It’s technically a wand vibrator, like the famed Magic Wand, the so-called “Cadillac of Vibrators.” For many, the drawback to the Magic Wand is that it’s giant, loud, and intimidating—and a bit clinical in its appearance by design. Of course, the fact that it’s not exactly vibrator-y looking—coupled with the powerful orgasms it delivers some people—could also be why it’s so popular.

But for those interested in an equally orgasmic and yet far cuter wand vibrator, the iWand is a worthwhile investment. At $122, it costs about as much as one therapy session after yet another Tinder date lets you know that, by the way, he’s not looking for anything too serious. Fortunately, neither am I: I’m already in love with a pink robot. Unlike humans, the iWand doesn’t switch rapidly from hot to cold, but slowly heats up as your orgasm builds.

If you’re in a relationship, regardless of the gender of your partner, you should absolutely give the iWand a try. Vibrators make penetrative sex better because you can place one on your clitoris to get off more easily. Wand vibrators work especially well for this, but they can be large and clunky, and some older varieties need to be plugged into the wall. Not the iWand. My dragon recharges simply, through a USB cord plugged into my computer. Be prepared: You may have to open up your partnership to a triad to make room for this sex toy.

I’m single, but with my dragon to get me off and my girlfriends there for emotional support, I basically have all my sexual and emotional needs met this cuffing season—and I don’t even have to meet anyone’s family over the holidays. I believe that this sex toy can change the way we date. From now on, if I’m going to let you into my bed, you better have a wonderful personality and be at least as impressive as this vibrator.

I Tried This 'Smart' Vibrator for Two Weeks and Became an Orgasm Scientist


Knowledge is power—especially when it comes to sex. The more we understand our own sexuality and desires, the more we can teach our partners about it, and the more we can get what we want. So when I learned about the Lioness, a smart vibrator that tracks various usage metrics to give you knowledge of your own arousal, the sex nerd in me was intrigued.

The Lioness functions like a Fitbit for your sex life, with sensors that measure tension (to detect arousal and orgasm), temperature (to track when you put it in and take it out), and motion (to keep track of how you’re moving the toy). It connects to an app, which displays each masturbation session on a chart. You can see your vaginal contractions represented as spikes or as a circle that contracts and expands. You can also tag each session with anything from “five-star” to “drunk” and learn how different outside circumstances impact your sex life.

But do we really need that kind of data about our sex lives? In some ways, it felt like solving a problem that only existed because this company said it did. Still, the stories the Lioness staff told me about women who had tested the product were pretty fascinating. One felt that her first orgasm per session was so strong it was painful, but the second one was more enjoyable. Her chart showed that the first was very brief, with extremely strong contractions, while the second was longer and less strong. One Lioness software developer, Maggie, told me she has stronger orgasms when she’s stoned, so unsurprisingly, her chart showed stronger contractions during these sessions.

Sensors aside, the Lioness is a nicely-made vibrator, with a movable head to stimulate the clitoris at the top and an insertable one that reaches deep into the vagina, making orgasms more intense. Like many users, I found that my chart matched my subjective experience. It was extremely noisy—instead of one peak like some users have, it had peaks all over—which made sense, because my vagina tends to contract throughout a session rather than just during orgasm. It was validating to see that what seems to be happening in my body is actually happening. I couldn’t figure out much else from looking at my first one, though. I couldn’t even tell where the orgasm was. So, I sent a screenshot to the Lioness team.

Lioness happens to be working on an “orgasm detector,” which can identify where in your chart you orgasmed. It’s not just a question of the strength of your contractions (if that were the case, I’d have orgasmed about a hundred times); it’s a complex combination of frequency, amplitude, and other measures, Lioness Co-founder and VP of Engineering Anna Lee explained to me. In addition to identifying my orgasm, Lee did something else the Lioness will hopefully soon be able to do automatically: Tell me what “orgasm type” I have.

Based on users’ data, the Lioness team has discovered three main orgasm types, and each woman has the same one every time she orgasms. Mine was the “avalanche,” which means it starts off strong then tapers off—pretty accurate based on my experience.

So, I knew my orgasms looked like avalanches on a graph—but what could I do with that information? This is where the tags come in, Maggie and Anna explained to me. To figure out under what conditions you orgasm the quickest or strongest or report the best sessions, you can review sessions with different tags. You can also write notes for each and read what you’ve written, making the app a sort of masturbation diary without any real work on your part.

I spent two weeks masturbating with the Lioness, adding tags like “with partner” and “morning.” The vibrator itself was solid, but as cool as the tracking capability was, I didn’t find much use in it. The things I learned—like that I orgasm more quickly at night and when I’m alone, for example—are things I knew already. And despite knowing it, I’ve never felt the need to use that information. I’m still going to masturbate whenever I feel like it. Decreasing my session length by a few minutes or strengthening my orgasms doesn’t matter much to me. I test sex toys for a living and even I think that an orgasm is an orgasm, and it’s best when I’m in the mood for it—not when an app predicts I will be.

And to be totally honest, knowing my masturbation sessions were being documented made me kind of self-conscious. In particular, after every session, the app tells you how much longer or shorter each session was than your average, and each session’s recording has the time span written on it. I’m already self-conscious about how long I take to orgasm, so I try not to think about the timing. Using Lioness forced me to, and I’m not sure what good that information does me.

Still, I will admit that seeing my vaginal contractions on a chart was pretty fun just for curiosity’s sake. It also helped me discuss my sexuality with my partner, which Lioness CEO Liz Klinger tells me was a major goal of hers. Hearing my partner point to a chart and say, “Is that your orgasm?” broke down a barrier for us; we hadn’t talked about my satisfaction that openly and frankly before. The fact that it was charted out made it more accessible and allowed for a clinical distance, like looking at a math problem rather than analyzing something so deeply personal.

The best potential for technologies like Lioness, though, is probably what they can tell us when all the data is put together (with participants’ consent, of course). The fact that it’s already introduced us to the concept of orgasm patterns—something about which nothing had been publishedbefor—is promising. I may prefer my masturbation sessions unrecorded for my own sake, but I’d gladly keep tracking them for science.

The Best New Sex Toy Is an Oscillating Vibrator


When you use a lot of sex toys, they can all start to blend together—in part because they all seem to vibrate in slight variations of the same way. Confused about what that means? Yeah, so was I—so I asked a Hot Octopuss rep to explain this new technology. She told me that a piston-like device inside the product moves the surface of the head, so while it may feel a bit like a typical vibrator’s buzzing, it’s really just moving up and down very quickly. Though Queen Bee isn’t the first oscillating sex toy, it’s different from many of the other ones on the market in that it doesn’t look like a slightly scary medical device, but like a sleek hairbrush:

When I first turned on the toy, I had the urge to hold it against my hand, my leg, and pretty much every part of me. The vibrations felt relaxing, almost like leaning against a jacuzzi jet. Using it as a sex toy, I felt no need to take off my pants, even on a low setting. I just held it down there, feeling an unusual sense of relaxation wash over me. It was as if the cloth of my pants was absorbing the vibrations and distributing them throughout my body.

Without clothes, though, the sensation just wasn’t the same. Instead of feeling it throughout my body, the vibration stopped at the surface, and it was way too intense to put directly over my clitoris. The most I could do was hold it over my outer labia and let the waves travel through, but even then it didn’t feel as strong as it did with my pants on.

So I got dressed again, and within two or three minutes, it was giving me a powerful orgasm that felt almost like it was happening in slow motion. Everything clenched up and froze for a few seconds before release, which felt more full-bodied than what most vibrators deliver. After recovering, I placed it back over my pants to see if this was one of the few magical toys that can give me a second orgasm. Sure enough, it passed that test—although afterward, it left me numb, tingly, and a bit uncomfortable.

The verdict? The Queen Bee’s oscillations really do provide a different feeling from your standard vibration. They stimulate the entire external vulva, not just the clitoris which, at least for me, lead to orgasms that feel more diffuse and drawn-out. This toy is perfect for those days when you just want to take a couple minutes from what you’re doing and rub one out with very little effort. Literally, all you have to do is turn it on and put it between your legs, and the oscillator will do all the work—no hands necessary.

And if you’re like me and hate closing your windows, you can use this thing covertly and while fully-clothed: Nobody looking in will have any idea what you’re doing.

This Might Be the Best Vibrator I've Ever Tried


There’s a new class of sex toy that’s unlike anything else—and not only is its latest incarnation the best vibrator I’ve probably ever tried, but I’m pretty sure the technology it uses will be the future of pleasure products. Unlike traditional vibes, toys like the Womanizer and the Satisfyer (which won a spot in our Sex Toy Awards) create airwaves around your clitoris to suck it upward. Nothing else has given me orgasms in under two minutes or multiple orgasms in one session, so it makes sense that LELO, the company responsible for some of the most high-end sex toys on the market, would create its own version of the suction vibrator. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint.

The LELO SONA Cruise, which the company dubbed a “sonic massager,” has a similar design to the Satisfyer and Womanizer toys, and at $108, its price point is right in the middle of those other brands. It’s got a handle with three buttons—one to change vibration modes, one to increase the intensity, and one to decrease it—and a head that looks like a little mouth, which goes over your clitoris. You don’t move it, you just hold it there and it does all the work for you.

Both the Womanizer and the Satisfyer vibrate very softly because their main function is suction—it feels like they’re reaching deep within your core, pulling an orgasm out of you. The LELO SONA Cruise feels more like a vibrator, with extremely powerful vibrations on the surface of the clitoris. This surprised me, since the press release emailed to me said it “stimulates the entire clitoris—even the parts you don’t see—with an eager, fluttering sonic hum, for a different kind of orgasm produced by the gentle deep-tissue massage of sonic waves.” That wasn’t my experience: The vibration felt very concentrated on the head.

This part of the press release, though, did ring true: “It’s a prolonged climax after a sensual build-up, an orgasm that comes from somewhere deep within you.” While its competitors aim to get women off quickly—and do a damn good job at it—the LELO SONA Cruise aims for more sustained pleasure. And it succeeds, too: My orgasms from this one take more like four or five minutes, rather than two or three, but they follow a very distinctive arc. Around a minute or two before climax, my vagina starts having singular contractions spaced a few seconds apart, each of which feels like its own mini-orgasm. I’d describe the process as more of a hill than a mountain with a sharp peak.

Also unlike the Womanizer and Satisfyer, this one isn’t great for attempting multiple orgasms. The vibrations are so powerful it would probably leave your clit in a coma. I usually like to put vibrators up to the highest setting, but I couldn’t handle this one that way, likely because of another unique SONA Cruise feature: The toy’s name is a reference to “cruise control,” because it doesn’t lose power when you press it hard against you. Honestly, I could’ve done without this. It felt like more nerve cells in my clit were dying with each use (felt being the operative word—contrary to popular belief, vibrators can’t actually permanently desensitize you).

Another downside is that the whole thing, including the nozzle, is pretty hard plastic. The Satisfyer Pro 2, for example, is squishy where it comes into contact with your skin, so you can press it down without worrying about pain. But you’ve got to be careful with this one: Its power is unprecedented, and that’s saying a lot for someone who’s tried the alarmingly strong Satisfyer Pro 2: Next Generation.

I wouldn’t be surprised if even more toys following this suction model come out over the next few years. So far, though they have the same basic premise, none of the different models I’ve tried have felt too similar. The Satisfyer and Womanizer are pretty alike, but the LELO SONA Cruise provides a different kind of pleasure that’s not really better or worse, merely suited to different needs.

Personally? I’m going to cover all my bases and keep one of each in my bedside drawer.
