Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas' Relationship: A Complete Timeline

We have another whirlwind romance on our hands, my friends. People magazine reports Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas are now engaged after just two months of dating. To be clear, this is just a report since Chopra and Jonas haven’t confirmed anything yet. In fact, they haven’t even confirmed their relationship in general. Still, the Internet’s freaking out over this because Jonas and Chopra are a (very) hot couple no one saw coming, which makes this engagement even more of a surprise.

In honor of this joyous occasion, let’s look back at their relationship history, starting with when they brought the fire emoji to life at the 2017 Met Gala.

May 2017: Chopra and Jonas attend the 2017 Met Gala together and set off a firestorm of dating rumors. They each played it coy, though, when asked about their relationship in interviews following the event “Yeah, we were on the same table and we already know each other,” Chopra told Jimmy Kimmel. “So he was like, ‘Hey, you wanna go [to the Met Gala] together?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, OK, let’s go together.’ It ended up working out.” Jonas doubled down on this, telling a radio station, “I’m single. [Chopra] and I knew each other from before.”

May 2018: Fast-forward to one year later—Memorial Day weekend—and the dating chatter intensifies again. Us Weekly publishes a report claiming Chopra and Jonas are seeing each other. “It’s a good match and they are both interested in each other,” a source told the publication.

Chopra and Jonas’ activities over Memorial Day weekend seemed to corroborate this report. They went on a total of three dates together: to a Beauty and the Beast Live show at the Hollywood Bowl Friday, a Los Angeles Dodgers game on Saturday, and a boat outing alongside Wilmer Valderrama, Glen Powell, and Chord Overstreet.

Keep in mind during all of this, Chopra and Jonas are consistently favoriting photos they uploaded to Instagram:

June 11, 2018: Jonas and Chopra attend a Jonas cousin’s wedding in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Daily Mail has photos of them together at the shindig; they were also photographed at JFK airport in New York City three days before, presumably en route.

July 1, 2018: Chopra attends Jonas’ concert at the VillaMix Festival in Brazil. “Him ?,” she captioned a video of Jonas performing at the show, which she uploaded to Instagram Stories.

July 7, 2018: Reports surface that Chopra and Jonas have matching gold Cartier rings—rings that look a lot like wedding bands.

July 16, 2018: Jonas and Chopra go on a double date with Joe Jonas and his fiancé, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner. Kevin Jonas also attends.

July 17, 2018: The couple goes out in London for Chopra’s birthday, reportedly grabbing a bite at Chiltern Firehouse. They both looked chic, as always.

July 27, 2018: People reports that Chopra and Jonas are engaged after two months of dating. What’s more: Jonas reportedly shut down an entire Tiffany store just to buy Chopra a ring. That’s very Sweet Home Alabama, am I right?

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson's Relationship: A Timeline

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s engagement—excuse me, reported engagement—is all I can think about right now. The two haven’t confirmed the news directly, nor did their reps respond to our request for comment, but Grande’s recent string of tweets certainly implies something’s going on.

Is that something an engagement? Maybe. Anything goes in 2018—including two celebrities getting engaged after dating for just a few weeks. Apparently, these two are just that into each other. (If you didn’t pick up on that Ariana bop reference, then I’m sorry. “Into You” deserved the world.)

All we really know about Grande and Davidson’s relationship comes from social media and news reports—both of which point to them getting together in early May. From then on, it’s been a sea of emojis, social media comments, backstage dates, and even (maybe) an engagement. Below, a timeline of their whirlwind romance.

March 2016: Grande and Davidson meet on the set of Saturday Night Live. At the time, he was dating Larry David’s daughter Cazzie David. This was the episode where Grande did her spot-on impression of Jennifer Lawrence that was my religion for approximately two weeks.

[embedded content]

September 2016 Grande reveals—via Instagram, naturally—that she’s dating rapper Mac Miller.

May 9, 2018: Fast-forward two years later: News breaks that Grande and Miller have split. She confirms the news herself on Instagram Stories: “I can’t wait to know and support you forever and I’m so proud of you,” she wrote.

May 12: Grande attends a Saturday Night Live after-party and is photographed holding what’s seems to be Davidson’s phone case. That, or she got the same case for her own phone. Both scenarios are suspect.

May 16: A few days later, Davidson reveals that he and David split up. “Very talented girl, she’ll be great and she’ll be fine,” he said on Complex’s show Open Late With Peter Rosenberg

May 17: Davidson posts a photo to Instagram with a cloud tattoo on his middle finger. The aforementioned phone case Grande was seen holding days before is cloud-shaped. Also, on May 14, Grande posted a cloud emoji caption to Instagram. Coincidence? I think not.

May 21: Us Weekly reports that Grande and Davidson are “casually dating.” This came off the heels of the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, where, according to People‘s sources, the two were acting “lovey-dovey.” “After Ariana’s performance, they were backstage and he had his arm around her,” one onlooker told the magazine. “They seemed very lovey-dovey. He was hanging out with her and her friends with his arm around her. She seemed quite smitten.”

May 24: Davidson and Grande ramp up their Instagram flirtation. Emojis, inside jokes, and lots of “HAHAHAHAs” are involved.

May 25: Davidson hits back at trolls on the Internet who said that Grande shouldn’t date him because he has borderline personality disorder (BPD). “Just because someone has a mental illness does not mean they can’t be happy and in a relationship. It also doesn’t mean that person makes the relationship toxic,” he wrote on his Notes app, which he posted to Instagram Story. “I just think it’s fucked up to stigmatize people as crazy and say that they are unable to do stuff that anyone can do. It’s not their fault and it’s the wrong way for people to look at things.”

May 30: Several fans took this photo Davidson posted of himself and Grande in Hogwarts attire as confirmation of their relationship. “The chamber of secrets has been opened,” he wrote.

June 3: Davidson debuts two new tattoos that appear to be tributes to Grande. The first is of her iconic Dangerous Woman bunny ears. The second is a silo of the initials “AG.” Subtle.

June 4: Davidson goes to support Grande at Wango Tango. He raves about her performance on Instagram Story.

June 9: The two now start posting photos of each other more frequently. Davidson uploaded a snap of them almost kissing at Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s Kids See Ghosts album listening party. In one pic, Grande jokes that her Instagram page is now a “Pete Davidson update” account.

June 11: Reports surface that Grande and Davidson are engaged. Grande appears to confirm via a series of cryptic tweets, likes, and replies. Fans lose their minds.

And that, my friends, is the story of 2018’s most extra celebrity relationship.

How Kate Spade Built an Empire: A Timeline

Few designers achieved the level of everywhere-ness that Kate Spade did. Her signature nylon handbags were a nineties staple; her cheerful color palettes, her playful aesthetic, and her optimistic slogans made her brand beloved across the country and internationally. Her story—of teaching herself the business, of starting her own company, of leaving her own company, of starting a second company—has been retold, inspiring young entrepreneurs, women, and, of course, her shoppers. When news of her passing broke on June 5, it felt personal to many.

Kate Valentine Spade (née Brosnahan) was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from Arizona State University in 1985—there she met Andy Spade while working retail, and together they moved to New York after college. Kate got work through a temp agency before becoming a fashion assistant at Mademoiselle, which was published by Condé Nast. She rose up the ranks of the magazine, and, when she was promoted to associate editor, she was put in charge of accessories.

Spade left Mademoiselle in 1991. At that point she had been the publication’s senior fashion editor—and she had an idea to create a handbag line, despite having no formal design training. “I remember being really embarrassed that I wasn’t a student from Parsons or RISD or FIT, that I really didn’t know what I was doing,” she told NPR’s Guy Raz in 2017. “I honestly started with paper.” She’d “start by buying big sheets of white paper, and I would cut out and tape the shape that I wanted,” she recalled. “Then I’d look at it and I’d make it shorter, smaller…. I went to a pattern maker that I found in the back of Women’s Wear Daily…. She worked out of her apartment, and she was as patient as could be with me because I didn’t know anything.”

Two years later, in 1993, she and Andy officially founded Kate Spade the brand. (The name was a combination of the two’s names, at the time. They were married a year later, in 1994.) At the center of its inaugural collection was the “Sam” bag, a boxy handbag that would become one of its signatures. There were six styles total, ranging in price from $100 to $400—and, notably to many, featured the brand’s name, in lowercase, on the outside. It was carried at Barneys, Fred Segal, and Charivari. The company didn’t turn a profit for three years, though: “We were still not making any money. Nobody was making a salary. Andy was funding everything,” Spade told NPR. “I just remember thinking, I think we need to shut it down.”

Nineteen ninety-six was a pivotal year for the brand. It’s when the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awarded Spade the New Fashion Talent in Accessories prize. (She would win another trophy from the organization in 1998, for Best Accessory Designer of the Year.) She also opened her first store, in New York’s downtown SoHo neighborhood. Andy quit his day job in advertising and joined the brand full-time. Plus, the company finally broke even.

Kate Spade the brand started gaining a following, thanks to its success at trade shows and in retail, features in magazines like Vogue, and celebrity endorsements. (Julia Roberts and Gwyneth Paltrow were reportedly early fans.) By 1998 it had stores in Boston, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.

Then, in 1999, Neiman Marcus Group bought a 56 percent stake of Kate Spade, at an estimated $33 million. The Spades remained involved with the company, though. And over the next few years, it would expand into new categories—bath and body (with Estée Lauder, in 2002), home (with Lenox, in 2003), and even airline uniforms (for the now defunct Song airlines, also in 2004).

In 2002 Spade was named a Glamour Woman of the Year. “If you’re as honest and fair as you can be, not only in business but in life, things will work out,” she said her cover story interview. “I hope that people remember me not just as a good businesswoman but as a great friend—and a heck of a lot of fun.”

A few years later she told Vogue of her brand: “We’re not intimidating…. I think some people get nervous about fashion because they find it a little scary. But fashion should be enjoyed; it shouldn’t be looked at from a jaded, been-there-done-that point of view.”

In 2006 Neiman Marcus Group sold Kate Spade to Liz Claiborne, Inc., for $124 million; the brand had been put on the market by the majority stakeholder for about a year before that, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Spades left the company a year later, in 2007, and haven’t been involved with it since. (Even though the brand still exists with the designer’s name, The Fashion Law posits that Spade likely signed an agreement that would prevent her from using her name for commercial purposes, as the trademark presumably belongs to its new owner.) That same year Deborah Lloyd was hired as Kate Spade’s new creative director. (Under Lloyd’s leadership, the brand would launch apparel, jewelry, children’s and other products, as well as a sister brand, Kate Spade Saturday.)

After walking away from Kate Spade the brand, Kate Spade the woman focused her efforts on philanthropy, through the Kate Spade & Company Foundation, and on raising her daughter, Frances Beatrix. Andy, meanwhile, started his own creative agency and founded the sleepwear brand Sleepy Jones.

Liz Claiborne, Inc., would also undergo some changes in the following years: The company rebranded as Fifth & Pacific in 2012, then again to Kate Spade & Company in 2014. In 2017 Coach bought Kate Spade for a reported $2.4 billion; that fall it was incorporated into Tapestry, Inc.

In 2016 the Spades returned to fashion—more specifically, to the world of accessories—with a new venture, named after their daughter. Frances Valentine launched as a direct-to-consumer line, with select retail partners, like Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s. To mark this new chapter, Kate legally changed her name from Kate Spade to Kate Valentine, a family name. “We’re not trying to be cheeky or coy,” she told Business of Fashion. “It really was to distinguish the name, and separate the two worlds. Obviously we’re super proud of Kate Spade, and we want to be respective of both.”

Even a decade after she had cut ties with the label that bore her name, Kate Valentine Spade couldn’t be totally separated from Kate Spade New York. She herself recounted an instance to The Wall Street Journal when her then-11-year-old stopped her in front of a Kate Spade store in Manhattan and said, “Mommy, that’s you.”

For many women, “Kate Spade” didn’t mean a handbag or even a New York designer—rather, it represented something bigger: a milestone purchase, an achievement, a first investment in one’s self. Twelve women told Glamour about their first Kate Spade moment, and countless others did the same on social media, in light of the designer’s death.

Twenty-five years after she first entered the fashion industry, Kate Valentine Spade was still intertwined with that logo, that story, that message. After her untimely death, the legacy of her work, and the vivacious spirit it represented, will resonate even more deeply in fashion and beyond. “We honor all the beauty she brought into this world,” Kate Spade the brand said in a statement after her death. And, truly, we’re all better for it.

Even Fan Theories Can't Explain the Problematic Timeline of 'Grey's Anatomy'

At this point, Grey’s Anatomy, which returns tonight for its 14th season, is less of a show and more of a cultural institution. It’s the bedrock of the Shondaland empire, required viewing (and tweeting) for its legion of devoted fans, and the place young actors go for career-boosting arcs—much like ER before it or, on the East coast, Law & Order: SVU.

There was a time, however, when Grey’s was a show like (and unlike) any other, when it hadn’t been running for a thousand years and killed off a dozen main characters. A time when it was just this juicy drama starring really, really good-looking people that I would binge-watch with my camp friends at our semi-regular sleepovers. After those had petered out, I didn’t pay attention to the show until a couple months ago, when it was on at the gym and I found myself watching it; before I knew it, I had fallen down a hole and started the series from the beginning. (Side note: Grey’s is the perfect gym show because it’s addictive, chatty, and will make you terrified of death so you want to work out more.)

But friends, as I watched I noticed something that I never noticed before, but now it’s completely blown my mind and I can’t get past it: The first three seasons take place over the course of one calendar year. Just think about what that means for a second. That means by the time Burke leaves Christina at their wedding, he has known (not dated, not been engaged to, known) her for 12 months. Meanwhile, George falls in love with Meredith, sleeps with Meredith, loses his father, falls in love with Callie, marries Callie, and sleeps with Izzie between July and the next July, approximately. Let’s not even get into the Denny of it all.

If you watch the episodes week by week, you might think the show’s romances move kinda fast; if you look at it in terms of a single trip around the sun, they’re insane. These people start sleeping with each other within days of meeting one another, and they get married at an alarming rate. And apparently, it’s not only normal but good to not know if you want to be with someone on a week-to-week basis. From day one, these interns are like, “We gotta be extra smart and dedicated because there aren’t very many female interns and it’s a competitive program” before they immediately and ceaselessly start sleeping with their attendings and talking about it to anyone who will listen, ad nauseum. And then they break up a bunch! Over and over! In front of patients!

It makes sense that after a short first season (9 episodes) the writers would extend the intern year dynamic into the second season. They set up a pecking order and a chain of command, so, sure, they wanted to continue exploring that. But season 2 is also a whirlwind, including the fact that Bailey has a baby. If little Tuck was conceived on, say, the very first day of season 1 that means that by the middle of season 2, when Bailey delivers, nine months have passed, and the rest of season 2 and all of season 3 take place over the course of three more months?

And it doesn’t get better after season three: Seasons 4 and 5 are over the course of George’s second year as an intern, which means all of the many, many, many things that happen in the first five seasons of this show are supposed to be over two years. At the end of season five, these people have known each other for two years max.

I’m not alone in my confusion. After discovering this, I spent hours combing through timelines that superfans made online trying to make sense of it all, and it just doesn’t work, no matter how many convoluted fan theories—Lexie Grey doesn’t exist, for instance—you pile on top of it. Maybe the first seasons just exist on a different plane of existence. There are multiple references to Meredith being blonde even though she demonstrably isn’t and in the super early days, there was a cheesy theme song:

[embedded content]

Maybe (and most likely) the writers’ room just didn’t care. Or maybe—and hear me out here—Meredith’s arrival at Seattle Grace opened up a rift in the space-time continuum and suspended the laws of physics as we know them? Yeah, that’s probably it.
