'This Is Us' Season 2 Episode 5 Recap: There's Another Pearson We Didn't Know About


This Is Us is running two for two in terms of bonkers final-minute reveals. Last week we found out Kate is pregnant, and this week we learned…well, read on to find out.

The ’90s

Jack is putting all the flannel he wears to good use and taking Child Randall and Child Kevin on a camping trip. Jack and Rebecca think this will help Kevin and Randall get along better…because trapping two kids in a tent helps them bond? In my experience, not having access to air conditioning just makes people more irritable.

Rebecca and Child Kate are going to have a “girls’ day” while the boys are gone, which is just a train-wreck waiting to happen. But things take a turn when Rebecca gets a call from a nursing home saying Jack’s father (Stanley) is close to passing. Rebecca tries to call Jack, but to no avail. Remember, he’s literally in the woods.

Rebecca goes to the nursing home to visit Stanley. It’s quiet and overly dramatic. Stanley doesn’t say anything, and Rebecca laments about his difficult relationship with Jack. Stanley notices Kate standing outside his hospital room and asks to see her; Rebecca quickly shoos her out of sight. Yeesh.

Meanwhile, in the forest, Kevin’s being a grade-A douche to Randall. Their contentious relationship is all Kevin’s fault; I don’t know why Randall has to endure mosquito bites to mend something he didn’t break. Jack reprimands Kevin and asks why he can’t be nice to Randall. Kevin rudely says he “doesn’t know” and asks Jack to stop talking. Can we just send Kevin to boarding school? He’s like the Blair Witch, only less cool.

They ultimately squash their beef after Kevin finds Randall’s notepad, which includes an entry about things not to do to annoy him. (Further proof Child Randall is a god among peasants.)

Rebecca finally gets a hold of Jack and tells him about Stanley. She asks Jack if he wants to visit the nursing home, and he flat-out says Stanley’s been dead to him for a long time. It’s ice-cold, but I suppose I understand where he’s coming from. (See Young Jack’s storyline, below.)

Adult Kate

Kate wastes no time telling Toby she’s pregnant. He acts excited, but it feels forced and disingenuous. My only evidence for thinking this is the face he makes after hearing the news looks like Taylor Swift’s infamous surprise face. Kate’s understandably worried her age and weight might cause her to lose the baby. Toby tries to comfort her, but it doesn’t work and, instead, she tells him to keep any excitement he has about this baby to himself. His hope, she says, will just put more stress on her. This is such faulty logic. He’s just supposed to not mention it for nine months? Then why even tell him in the first place?

Kate lashes out at the skinny girl, Madison, in her Overeaters Anonymous class, and they have a super annoying fight in the parking lot. It’s clear Kate’s just resentful of this girl because she’s thin, and that’s kinda ick; like, people of all shapes and sizes have eating disorders. However, it’s also clear this overt, random-AF fight means Madison and Kate will become friends.

Yup, I’m right. They have a fender-bender in the lot, which causes Kate to freak out because she’s pregnant. When Madison hears this news, she’s not even mad about her car; she just hugs Kate and congratulates her. This is arguably the fastest-developing relationship in TV history. Imagine if our world leaders were like this?

The accident gives Kate a revelation about her pregnancy: She isn’t afraid to tell people about it now. So Kate and Toby go to a random restaurant, and she tells him he can tell one person inside they’re expecting. This is more bizarre than it is cute, but the mood music’s making me feel things.

And Toby doesn’t even follow the rules! He tells everyone in the restaurant that Kate’s pregnant and starts dancing. He then pours water on himself like he’s in Flashdance. This is all so dumb and disrespectful and not at all endearing! Kate said one person, man. Also, his real name is Tobias? WTF?

Adult Kevin

Kevin can’t stop taking pills to fix his knee. There’s some dramatic “addiction” music happening here that’s, honestly, making me feel pretty uneasy. Kevin stares at himself for a long time in the mirror—which, again, is sort of overkill. When did this show take a turn into Intervention territory?

He’s visiting Sophie in New York. They’re attending some fancy hospital gala where Kevin’s getting auctioned off for a date to raise money. Kevin asks Randall if he’s jealous of this, to which he (rightfully) replies, “No Black man will ever be jealous of being auctioned off. #AmericanHistory.” Yes, he says “hashtag,” which I’ll let slide because Randall’s perfect.

Kevin is blowing up his doctor’s phone for more Vicodin. It’s uncomfortable. He starts drinking a beer while Sophie’s getting ready for the gala; she reprimands him, and he gets defensive. I don’t know how to handle all this substance-abuse foreshadowing! Is Kevin going to get drunk at this gala and embarrass Sophie?!

Yes. That’s exactly what he does. Kevin misses his cue to go on stage for the auction because he’s drunk and yelling at his doctor on the phone. Sophie rips Kevin to shreds for this, and he offers no explanation. Instead, he acts evasive, says he’s stressed, and that he never should’ve agreed to attend the gala. I hate to say this, but he’s acting like most addicts do when confronted. Any doubt these pills are a problem for Kevin just went away.

Adult Randall

Kevin, while visiting, makes some comment about Déjà being “surly,” which Randall doesn’t appreciate. He tells Kevin to tread lightly with her and to not mention her hair. (Remember, Déjà cut off the braids Beth did for her after she realized Beth told Randall about her stress issues.) Déjà asks to attend Kevin’s gala; Randall agrees, but says he’ll have to take her because Kevin will be busy. Beth objects; it’s clear Déjà only wants to go because she’s crushing on Kevin. Stupidly, Randall doesn’t listen to Beth and says he’s taking Déjà anyway. Always listen to Beth, fool!

At the gala, things are awkward AF between Déjà and Randall. It’s obvious all she wants to do is hang out with Kevin, who’s frantically calling his doctor about Vicodin. (He’s also sweating. And drinking more. Oof.) Déjà’s crush on Kevin is cute; I just hope things don’t turn dramatic, but knowing this show they will.

Randall stares intently at Déjà’ as she eats a shrimp cocktail. He freaks out on her right as she’s about to eat the tail, which causes her to run to the bathroom. Randall rushes after her, and we learn the reason behind her fear of being touched and yelled at: Her former foster mother’s boyfriend used to beat her with magazines. Randall doesn’t know what to say to this, and, frankly, neither do I. It’s heartbreaking.

Young Jack

Yes, Young Jack makes an appearance in this episode (probably to aid the story about his dying father). He and his dad are going on a fishing trip, but they detour to a tavern for a quick drink. Jack’s visibly upset by this, which hints that he’s aware of his father’s drinking problem. This also foreshadows Jack’s future alcoholism and, if you think about it, Kevin’s pill addiction. Layers!

Holy shit. Stanley straight-up leaves Jack in the car to get drunk…and he stays in the bar for hours.

Wait. Wait. Wait. There’s someone else in the car with Young Jack. It’s another child. Jack’s brother. Jack has a brother. A younger one named Nicky! Whaaaat?! There’s an entire human we knew nothing about! Another classic This Is Us plot twist that came out of left field. We’re supposed to believe no one has ever mentioned this guy up until this exact moment??!? Color me annoyed but, yes, intrigued. Damn it!

Parting thoughts: Does Jack’s little brother also have a mustache now?

There's a Reason You'll Never See Kate Middleton Wearing Red Nail Polish

When it comes to setting trends while still keeping in mind classic royal traditions, Kate Middleton walks the line without crossing it. Her style is classic yet still very modern—hello, she loves the cold-shoulder look as much as we do. The duchess also loves to mix up her beauty look—ICYMI, she apparently changes her hair for each pregnancy—but we dare you to name a time you’ve seen Kate wearing red nail polish or coral on her fingers. Coming up blank? It turns out there’s a very specific reason why.

Marie Claire UK reported recently that only natural-looking nails are permitted at official royal events—which tend to be where and when photos of her get taken. That kind of explains why Queen Elizabeth II has been wearing the same shade of polish, Essie’s Ballet Slippers, since 1989. According to Essie, it’s “the only color Her Majesty would wear.” It is a cult classic, after all. And hey, if you know what you like…

Kate wore a similar, sheer pink shade on her wedding day. Her manicurist Marina Sandoval told the Daily Mail in 2011 that she mixed Bourjois Rose Lounge and Essie Allure to create the custom shade.

Prince Harry’s girlfriend and mostly-likely-soon-to-be-official fiancé, Meghan Markle, has also been spotted wearing natural nail shades when she’s out with Harry: at the Invictus Games, she had her nails painted with a sheer pinkish-white shade.

So why the no-bold-nail-polish rule in 2017? We love those shades, personally. But royals are expected to dress and behave according to strict, traditional codes—they can’t sign autographs, for example. And if it that’s the royal rule, we’ll respect it. The diamonds in Princess Diana’s tiara that Kate’s been known to wear make quite the statement anyway.

There's Another New 'Game of Thrones' Spinoff


We know you’re missing Game of Thrones so much that you’re fighting the temptation to re-watch every episode starting with season 1—but HBO heard our cries and answered our prayers. We’re getting another spinoff miniseries to tide us over until season 8 premiers either next year or in 2018—and it’s totally different than The Game Revealed spinoff we filled you guys in on a few weeks ago. When you preorder the 7th season of Thrones on Blu-ray release (out on December 12th) you’ll receive the mini series bonus disk for free. Best day ever? We think yes.

The spinoff is called Conquest & Rebellion, and it will center around the entire history of Westeros, from the love affairs, the betrayals, the violent wars and the tearful deaths. The sad news is the series won’t feature your beloved Kit Harington or Emilia Clarke or the rest of the cast you know and love, but don’t worry, they’re not getting replaced. The miniseries is animated, and you can get a feel for it by watching the first chapter, titled ‘Valyria’s Last Scion: House Targaryen’ below:

In order to watch the the entire miniseries—and the narrations by the voices of Jaime Lannister, Sansa Stark, Euron Greyjoy, Varys, and Littlefinger—you’ll have to buy the season 7 set. (But let’s be honest, we were going to do that anyways.) We would definitely recommend using this miniseries to help you win GoT trivia and to school all of your friends when they ask about what happened to the rest of Ned’s family.

Caitriona Balfe Says There's Less Sex on 'Outlander' Than You Think—and That's a Good Thing

If it seems like everyone’s talking about Outlander lately, it’s because…well, they are. Three years after the show’s premiere, more people are catching on to what fans of the STARZ series have loved since day one: the epic storytelling, sweeping locations, and, oh yeah, those sex scenes.

“It’s been such a whirlwind,” Irish-born actress Caitriona Balfe (who plays Claire) tells us. “I got the job and moved to Scotland almost four years ago, which is crazy to me. You just get enveloped in this very passionate fandom and get hit with this wall of love and support. It’s not very often these shows hit, and people don’t always connect with what you do, so it’s nice to be on something people are watching.”

And watching they are. Fans are counting down the days (and episodes) until Claire (Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) can hopefully find their way back to each other. Of course, there’s also her marriage to Frank (Tobias Menzies) in 1948 to contend with (just a small snag) and a newborn baby. We’ll how this all plays out when the season premiere arrives on Sunday, September 10—until then, Balfe filled us in on everything to expect. Get ready.

Heading into the third season, Jamie and Claire are in different centuries, so the dynamic will be different. How will the show handle the new direction where sex seems like it won’t come into play?

Caitriona Balfe: It’s funny, because there’s probably less sex in our show than people think. It’s just when we do it we try to empower these two characters to represent this meta-physical and all-encompassing love, so we get branded as, “It’s so sexy!” But if you look at the amount of episodes that it features in, it’s not in every single one. I also think those moments have to be earned by the characters and their journey. We’ve always said that as a show, we try to make it not gratuitous. You don’t want to cheapen it.

I love the beginning of this season because you see what life is like for these two characters without each other and how impactful that is in two very, very different ways. For Jamie, he knows Claire is living a life somewhere else, and that’s so evidently painful. Sam plays it so beautifully. For Claire, she’s now a widow in her mind. She believes he’s died, and how does someone move on and live a life when the love of their life has gone? She has a baby to protect and raise, and that has a huge impact on the decisions she makes going forward. And then, we get to play this great compromise marriage that’s complicated and disappointing and sad but also has moments of levity and connection. It’s fun to play that as an actor.

How did you approach going in to the season knowing Claire is still so feminist and tough but is arguably in an even more restrictive environment than when she’s in feudal Scotland?

Caitriona: The great thing is, it’s easy to look at Claire and be like, “She’s a modern woman in an ancient time; it’s such a patriarchal society, and of course she’s going to buck the system.” But in episode one, you see the first instance of it—when she’s at the dean’s office in the university, and the dean is so dismissing and puts her down so much, you see her kind of take it, but I believe that’s the moment she makes the decision of, “You know what? Fuck you, I’m going to go to medical school.” You realize it doesn’t matter what time period Claire is in, she’s going to break through the glass ceiling. That’s what I love. You see that her first day of medical school where, again, she’s being put down and dismissed, and she’s like, “Screw you.” She forms this great alliance with Jo Abernathy; you see the culture of the time—they are both the outcasts—but then the great thing is that you see them graduating, and it’s like, “Yeah, she’s formidable, and she’s not going to let these people put her down.”

The show really relies on the female gaze. Will that continue this season?

Caitriona: With all the sex scenes, or anything like that, we always try to approach them from a place of empowerment—not only the characters, but of the actors and the audience. That’s no different to how I approach it, to how Sam approaches it. What we’ve always said is that we’re not just this feminist show. What we are is a well-balanced, well-rounded look at a relationship; we give as much credence to the female perspective as we do to the male. The only reason that gets called feminist sometimes is because we’re not really used to seeing it so evenly distributed on TV. But it wouldn’t work if it was just from her perspective or if the men on the show were just 2-D portrayals. So, I just like to think of us as a show of equality. We try and do that this season, as we have the previous [seasons].

If Claire were to exist as a 20- or 30-something in 2017, what do you think she would be doing?

Caitriona: She would probably be campaigning strongly for Planned Parenthood. I think that given her medical…she will always be a doctor. I think that’s her gift in life—to be a healer of some description—but she would be appalled at the conversation around women’s health and women’s rights at the moment. I think she would be trying to fight against that very strongly.

There's a Reason Your Ob-Gyn Always Asks When Your Last Period Was


When you visit your ob-gyn, there are a few things you can always count on: You’ll talk about your vagina and she’s going ask what the first date of your last period was. The period question makes sense if you’re going to the doctor because you’re pregnant or you’ve been having irregular periods, but it seems kind of irrelevant otherwise. Turns out, it’s actually not as random of a question as you might think.

“Almost everything we talk about revolves around the menstrual cycle,” says Maureen Whelihan, M.D., an ob/gyn at the Center for Sexual Health & Education. And knowing when your last menstrual cycle started helps with diagnostics, says Lauren Streicher, M.D., an associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and author of Sex Rx: Hormones, Health, and Your Best Sex Ever. “The No.1 reason why someone comes in is that something is wrong with them,” she says. “So many potential diagnoses are dependent on where someone is in their cycle.” And, of course, doctors do still want to rule out that you aren’t pregnant and figure out if you have a regular cycle, says board-certified ob-gyn Pari Ghodsi, M.D.

Here are just a few issues where your the date of your last period helps more than you might have realized:

You found a lump in your breast

Naturally, that can make you freak out and assume that you have breast cancer, but where you are in your cycle will help your doctor figure out how they should respond. If you’re young, found a bump, and it’s three days before your period, Streicher says she’s less worried than if you just finished your period. “Many women will develop cysts and bumps right before their period,” she says, adding that she often tells women to come back after their period for another check (it’s usually gone by that point).

Your discharge looks different

You might not realize it, but your discharge actually changes with your cycle, says Whelihan. In the first half of your cycle, there’s a lot of mucousy, clear discharge; in the second half, it’s more white, milky, and thick, she says. If you suddenly experience thicker discharge in the beginning of your cycle, it could be a sign that something is off—but if it’s in the later half, it’s probably nothing to worry about.

You have spotting

If you’re spotting in the midway point of your cycle, it could simply mean that you’re ovulating. Some women spot a little when they ovulate because a little bit of their uterine lining breaks down before their period, Streicher explains. But spotting during a different time in your cycle could mean that you have uterine fibroids, a polyp, or some other condition that needs to get checked out. Either way, the period question helps your doctor know what they should start looking for.

You’re having vaginal pain

There can be dozens of reasons for this, which is why Streicher says the period q is so important to help docs ID the source. If it happens after you missed a period, your doctor may try to find out if you’re pregnant and what could be causing you pain. But if you’re not pregnant or you didn’t miss a period, it could be a sign of an ovarian cyst or even something that isn’t related to your vagina at all. “So many women think the minute they have pelvic pain that it’s ovarian cancer, but it could be IBS,” Streicher points out. “There’s a lot going on in the pelvis that doesn’t apply to your gynecologist.“

You’ve been trying to get pregnant with no luck

Understanding where you are in your cycle can let your doctor help you plan for pregnancy attempts, Whelihan says. Heads up: Your doctor will probably want to know the first date of your last six periods, Streicher says, so they can figure out how regular you are and the length of your cycle to help time when you should try to have sex.

So, next time you head to your ob-gyn, come prepared to answer the period question—it’s actually really important.
