Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask Review: Why It's Worth It

It’s nearly impossible to talk about the best lip balms without mentioning the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. The K-Beauty brand’s little pink tub has sold out multiple times since it arrived to the U.S. a few years ago and is praised for saving dry, cracked lips. So no surprise, when Glamour readers were asked to weigh in on their all-time favorite balms for this year’s Glamour Beauty Awards, this took home the crown.

As its name implies, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is a leave-on mask that soothes and moisturizes lips overnight. Which is just a fancy way of saying it’s a really thick, nutrient-rich balm that goes to work to while you’re asleep (although, it’s so good, I wear it 24/7). It’s got all the good things you want in a balm: hydrating hyaluronic acid, brightening vitamin C, and antioxidants that work together to form a barrier over your lips to lock in moisture. Plus, the flavors are incredible. It comes in vanilla, apple lime, grapefruit, and the original berry, which features a delicious-smelling blend of raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, and blueberry extracts (the latter is my fave).

The instructions ask you to apply a generous layer, which I do—and with reckless abandon. Most skin care products require “just a tiny bit,” so being able to slather on as much as I want feels like a necessary indulgence.

Despite being thick and goopy, the balm sinks into my lips within 15 or so minutes. It’s not tacky at all, and it wears off slowly as you sleep. You’re supposed to gently wipe or wash it off in the morning, but I rarely do. My desert-dry lips just soak up all of it—every night without fail.

I usually stash different lip balms in my coat pockets and bags, but the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is the one product I can actually rely on to do the work. It comes with a small applicator, which is my least favorite part about it since I find it hard to clean afterward, so I tend to use a Q-Tip instead. And actually, since our lips are relatively small compared to our faces, the tub lasts for months. (For the record, I’ve had mine for over a year.)

I’m usually to hard please when it comes to lip stuff. I need something that doesn’t dry out my lips more (I’m constantly licking them, although I know I shouldn’t), but is also low-maintenance. Bonus points if it looks pretty on my top shelf. My one gripe with other lip masks or scrubs is that it’s a whole process. You have to scoop, scrub, wipe, rinse…it’s too much. I just want something I can put on and forget about. Luckily, this is it for me.

And even though there’s no kissing happening once I have it on, the baby soft, smooth lips I get in the morning are totally worth it for me—and clearly, 13,000 other Glamour readers too.

How to Keep Curls Overnight: 6 Tips to Preserve Your Curls While Sleeping

Go to sleep with a perfect head of curls and wake up with a flattened mess. I know I’m not alone in the fight to keep my spirals looking perfect overnight. The truth is that we can’t all just simply wake, shake, and go (you do not want to see my #iwokeuplikethis hair). But the struggle doesn’t have to be so real if you put in a little extra effort before you hit the sheets. Here are a few pre-bedtime techniques that will ensure a happier, bouncier, and less frizzy morning (and even a few extra minutes of precious weekday sleep).

How to Keep Curls Overnight

For defined curls try…
BANTU KNOTS

“Bantu knots allow your hair to remain elongated and keep its definition,” says hairstylist Daryce Brown-Willis. “There is no need to make them perfect or small, and eight to 10 knots depending on density will do the trick.” Start by prepping your hair with a setting product. (We love Creme of Nature Pure Honey Texturizing Setting Lotion.) Then use a wide-tooth comb to make small or large sections, depending on your length, throughout your hair. Twist each section from root-to-tip and wind the twist into a taut coil that won’t easily budge at the base. Secure each with a bobby pin, and put on a silk bonnet to protect the knots from getting too messy as you sleep. How long will this take? No more than five to 10 minutes, tops. When you wake the next morning, unravel each knot, give your curls a shake, and you’re good to go.

For wavier curls try…
BRAIDS

This quick and easy technique can replace quality time with your curling iron in the morning, giving you one more chance to hit the snooze button. If you have wavy hair, a basic two-strand braid will help maintain that not-so-basic beachy texture. “Loosely braid or twist your hair and apply a wave spray or sea-salt spray to help it set,” says celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen. “When you wake up, take the braids out and you should still have your original curl pattern.”

For voluminous curls try…
A PINEAPPLE

Nope, we’re not talking about food. Pineappling is such a game-changing technique for preserving your curls overnight that you’ll wonder how you got this far without it. For really full, natural curls, simply pulling all your hair up and over near your forehead will allow you to keep your hair from literally falling flat. Lots of volume and plenty of bounce guaranteed for the A.M. Here’s how hairstylist Gabrielle Corney describes how to do it. “You pull your hair up to the top of your head and put it into a loose ponytail to prevent indents. Then you leave your natural curls out on the ends and secure the ‘pineapple’ with a headband, clip, or sleep cap. The next morning, give hair an extra pick-me-up with a curl refreshing spray, and style as desired.”

For soft curls try…
PIN CURLS

If you have a softer hair texture, but still want “big hair, don’t care” bragging rights, pin curls might be the method for you. Gather each curl from the bottom around your index finger, roll it upward, and flatten it onto your scalp. Secure with a bobby pin overnight, and gently release each in the morning for big and bouncy ringlets.

For long, loose curls try…
A TOPKNOT

When it comes to preserving longer curly hair at night, it can be time-consuming when you’d rather be in bed (or watching just one more episode on Netflix). “If you’ve got longer hair, opt for a lightweight curl mousse,” says celebrity hairstylist and Dove curl expert Cynthia Alvarez. Scrunch the mousse into your strands, flip your head over, and twist your hair into a high topknot, making sure it isn’t pulled too tightly around your scalp. Secure with a hair tie and pins. In the morning, take your hair down and reinforce some of the waves with your fingers or a curling iron for extra hold. For tighter waves and more volume, create multiple buns on your head. Put a soft silk scarf over the buns to keep them in place, without the friction of your pillowcase rubbing on them.

The Reason Why Sleeping Without Underwear Might Be a Great Idea

Generally there are two kinds of sleepers: pajama-wearers and naked-sleepers. Odds are, if you’re a pajama-wearer, you never sleep without underwear. You might not even think about why. But experts say sleeping without underwear can actually be a good thing for your vagina.

“You really should sleep without underwear if you’re prone to vaginal issues,” says Nancy Herta, M.D., an ob-gyn at Michigan State University, such as yeast infections, vaginismus and bacterial vaginosis). Why? Between discharge and sweat, your vagina is prone to moisture overnight, Dr. Herta explains. Underwear can trap that moisture, creating a breeding ground for the bad bacteria that cause those conditions.“Allowing that area to get some air helps to keep it dry and clean,” Dr. Herta says. Giving your vagina some breathing room lets it better take care of itself. Going underwear-free is an especially a good idea if you have a yeast infection right now or are very prone to them and get them often, says board-certified ob-gyn Pari Ghodsi, M.D.

If sleeping without underwear isn’t terribly appealing to you, Dr. Herta recommends that you switch to loose-fitting cotton underwear. Cotton can help absorb some of the moisture instead of keeping it right against you, like silk or lace would. Silk and lace can also irritate the skin around your vagina, Dr. Ghodsi says, so at the very least if you’ve been wearing silk or lace underwear all day it’s a good idea to switch out of them before you go to sleep. If you can’t imagine giving up your PJs, go commando under a pair of loose-fitting cotton pajama pants.

It’s worth noting that if you find you can’t sleep without wearing underwear but you’ve never had a problem, Dr. Ghodsi says you’re probably fine to keep doing what you’ve been doing. Sweet dreams.
