How to Keep Curls Overnight: 6 Tips to Preserve Your Curls While Sleeping

Go to sleep with a perfect head of curls and wake up with a flattened mess. I know I’m not alone in the fight to keep my spirals looking perfect overnight. The truth is that we can’t all just simply wake, shake, and go (you do not want to see my #iwokeuplikethis hair). But the struggle doesn’t have to be so real if you put in a little extra effort before you hit the sheets. Here are a few pre-bedtime techniques that will ensure a happier, bouncier, and less frizzy morning (and even a few extra minutes of precious weekday sleep).

How to Keep Curls Overnight

For defined curls try…
BANTU KNOTS

“Bantu knots allow your hair to remain elongated and keep its definition,” says hairstylist Daryce Brown-Willis. “There is no need to make them perfect or small, and eight to 10 knots depending on density will do the trick.” Start by prepping your hair with a setting product. (We love Creme of Nature Pure Honey Texturizing Setting Lotion.) Then use a wide-tooth comb to make small or large sections, depending on your length, throughout your hair. Twist each section from root-to-tip and wind the twist into a taut coil that won’t easily budge at the base. Secure each with a bobby pin, and put on a silk bonnet to protect the knots from getting too messy as you sleep. How long will this take? No more than five to 10 minutes, tops. When you wake the next morning, unravel each knot, give your curls a shake, and you’re good to go.

For wavier curls try…
BRAIDS

This quick and easy technique can replace quality time with your curling iron in the morning, giving you one more chance to hit the snooze button. If you have wavy hair, a basic two-strand braid will help maintain that not-so-basic beachy texture. “Loosely braid or twist your hair and apply a wave spray or sea-salt spray to help it set,” says celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen. “When you wake up, take the braids out and you should still have your original curl pattern.”

For voluminous curls try…
A PINEAPPLE

Nope, we’re not talking about food. Pineappling is such a game-changing technique for preserving your curls overnight that you’ll wonder how you got this far without it. For really full, natural curls, simply pulling all your hair up and over near your forehead will allow you to keep your hair from literally falling flat. Lots of volume and plenty of bounce guaranteed for the A.M. Here’s how hairstylist Gabrielle Corney describes how to do it. “You pull your hair up to the top of your head and put it into a loose ponytail to prevent indents. Then you leave your natural curls out on the ends and secure the ‘pineapple’ with a headband, clip, or sleep cap. The next morning, give hair an extra pick-me-up with a curl refreshing spray, and style as desired.”

For soft curls try…
PIN CURLS

If you have a softer hair texture, but still want “big hair, don’t care” bragging rights, pin curls might be the method for you. Gather each curl from the bottom around your index finger, roll it upward, and flatten it onto your scalp. Secure with a bobby pin overnight, and gently release each in the morning for big and bouncy ringlets.

For long, loose curls try…
A TOPKNOT

When it comes to preserving longer curly hair at night, it can be time-consuming when you’d rather be in bed (or watching just one more episode on Netflix). “If you’ve got longer hair, opt for a lightweight curl mousse,” says celebrity hairstylist and Dove curl expert Cynthia Alvarez. Scrunch the mousse into your strands, flip your head over, and twist your hair into a high topknot, making sure it isn’t pulled too tightly around your scalp. Secure with a hair tie and pins. In the morning, take your hair down and reinforce some of the waves with your fingers or a curling iron for extra hold. For tighter waves and more volume, create multiple buns on your head. Put a soft silk scarf over the buns to keep them in place, without the friction of your pillowcase rubbing on them.

American singer-songwriter Pink has, for years, given fans hit after Top 40 hit. From “Just Give Me A Reason” to “So What,” the artist’s powerhouse vocals and emotionally-charged lyrics have kept the her a pop frontrunner since she came on the scene in early 2000. So, really, it’s no surprise that fans love covering her work, or that her work has, quite literally, changed lives.

In October 2017, Glamour showed Pink a video of a YouTuber, Davina Michelle, who was covering Pink’s 2017 power ballad “What About Us.” At the time, Pink was overwhelmingly impressed by the singer. “That is better than I will ever sound,” she says while watching Davina Michelle perform. “I love that. I want to own that.”

Davina Michelle’s own reaction to Pink watching her performance is pretty priceless, too. But it’s how the novice YouTuber’s life changed after appearing in Glamour’s “You Sang My Song” video series that proves particularly special.

After her “You Sang My Song” cameo with Pink, Davina Michelle achieved an impressive amount of fame on her own. Before appearing in “You Sang My Song,” Davina Michelle’s YouTube cover of “What About Us” had approximately 200K YouTube views. Now, the video has over 11.5M. She’s also performed on Dutch radio stations and is a fixture on a weekly Dutch television show alongside other musicians. What’s more, the artist currently has a song on Dutch Top 40 that has remained number one for nine weeks.

“So many things have changed, it’s crazy” the artist explains in a follow-up conversation with Glamour, one year later. “I didn’t do any live performances [before], I only was on YouTube. After the Pink video…I got to perform everywhere.”

Something for the highlight reel: Davina Michelle was recently informed that she will perform on tour with Pink in Amsterdam when her tour reaches the Netherlands in June 2019.

The 8 Best Acne Patches to Get Rid of Pimples Overnight

Although I’ve spent a better part of my career writing about my skin care, I first became obsessed when I started getting hormonal breakouts at 14. I’ve burned through tubes of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid gels—burning a few acne scars into my face in the process—and bottles of acne-relieving toners, all in an attempt to control the monthly cyst or two.

But because these products were so harsh on my sensitive skin—and did nothing for those under-the-skin monsters—I was forced to experiment. I spent more and more time scouring online for the best acne treatments out there. And that’s when I discovered acne patches late one night on an Amazon crawl, the medication-free pimple stickers that completely changed my complexion and perspective. Specifically, it was the reviewers who sold me on the NexCare Acne Absorbing Covers ($5, amazon.com), as they were heralded as particularly efficacious at treating cystic, hormonal acne that doesn’t normally respond to spot treatments—exactly the kind of zit that becomes my monthly nemesis and the kind that should never, ever be squeezed.

The instructions were simple: Clean the area, apply the patch, then wait. Once its color turns from clear to white, you take it off. NexCare recommends you leave the sticker on for several hours, but say they work best while you sleep. So I washed my face one night, slapped two on and hit the sack. The next morning, the stickers were white, as promised. You could literally see that they had worked like sponges to suck out the oil and gunk, leaving both zits far less inflamed with one practically disappearing. It was like magic, but not.

When I asked Joshua Zeichner, MD, the director of cosmetic and clinical dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, about acne patches, he explained that the majority of them (including my beloved NexCare patches) are made of hydrocolloid, and quite similar to topical wound treatments. “Hydrocolloid dressings are used in medicine for their ability to enhance wound healing—they can stick to the skin, form a protective seal over a wound, and absorb excess fluid,” he says. “These same properties make them useful for treating conditions like acne. Think of a pimple as a skin wound of sorts. Applying the hydrocolloid bandage over it can help protect and calm the inflamed skin, allowing it to heal.”

From then, I became an acne patch evangelist, preaching their incredible prowess to literally anyone who would listen. And although the NexCare stickers were my first love, I’ve since found a slew of different brands that have completely changed my skin care game. I don’t use over-drying lotions anymore, and the patches literally work overnight on about half of my pimples, maybe a few days for the big mamas.

Ready to try them yourself? Regardless of how big or angry your zit is, these are the eight different acne patches I’ve personally tested and will sing the gospel of.
