Outdoor Voices Sale: 50% Off Bestselling Leggings

When I put on my first pair of Outdoor Voices leggings, I understood the hype. After months of denial (how good could they possibly be?), I saw why they were suddenly everywhere I turned. You’ve definitely seen Outdoor Voices’ signature color block leggings too, whether in paparazzi shots of celebrities like Alessandra Ambrosio, Gigi Hadid and Sophie Turner—or just on what seems like every girl in barre class (and at the coffeeshop). In fact, when Outdoor Voices founder Tyler Haney was struggling to raise money from male investors, she sent her leggings to their wives. Weeks later the men who had dismissed her had called back, because yes, their wives couldn’t stop wearing them either. They’re that good.

Once you own a pair, it’s easy to see why everyone loves them. My Outdoor Voices leggings are insanely comfortable: I find myself lounging in them for hours after a gym class, whereas I normally want to get out of my workout clothes ASAP after class. I even wear my Outdoor Voices leggings as a crucial part of my non-gym outfits now—which, for someone who never really understood athleisure and loves to dress up as much as I do, is pretty unheard of. The only issue is that after I wore my first pair of Outdoor Voices, I desperately wanted more. I wanted the 7/8 Springs Leggings in every color combination. I wanted the Exercise Dress and the Tri-Tone Slashback Crop Top. I even wanted their Hoka shoe collaboration that took the word “dad shoe” to new heights. But Outdoor Voices isn’t cheap, and I’ve been having a hard time justifying buying more pieces than I’ve already accrued.

Luckily, Outdoor Voices is currently having a sale with 50% off their bestsellers. Considering they barely ever have sales, this is huge. Their signature leggings are now $51 (!) and there are even crop tops for as low as $27. If you haven’t ever shopped the brand before, now’s the time to see what the hype’s all about. (And if you already own some Outdoor Voices, now’s the time to stock up.)

Best Sweatpants for Women: Outdoor Voices CloudKnit Pants Review

I won’t lie: Sweatpants have never been a part of my wardrobe. In fact, I can’t even remember owning any after high school. Even then, I wasn’t really on board with them. I’d have to wear them to sports practice, but would always prefer a track pant, or something a little more performance-driven. If I wanted something soft and comfy to lounge in, I’d just wear pajama pants; if I needed to look presentable in front of other people, I’d splurge on a cashmere pant. As far as I was concerned, there was never a need for sweatpants.

I’m well aware that sweatpants, as a category, have evolved significantly since my teen years. I see the latest and greatest in clothing as a fashion editor, and I’ve come across my fair share of fleece-lined, tailored, sophisticated options that are much nicer than the slouchy ones I reluctantly owned way back when. Still, nothing has made me want to cross to the other side, to Team Sweatpants. I was pretty content with my other so-called comfort pants.

This stance has only been challenged once. I was at a press preview, checking out Outdoor Voices’ new activewear collection. I was looking at the women’s section, but eventually meandered over to the men’s—I always like to check it out, to see if there’s something my husband might like. Unlike me, he’s an avid sweatpant-wearer—and a discerning sweatpant-shopper at that: His one rule is that sweatpants must have pockets, to hold a set of keys and a phone. He won’t buy a pair without them.

I noticed the Outdoor Voices’ Cloud Knit pants because of the pockets, and I liked the heathered fabric they came in. The communications director for the brand noticed, and came over to rave about these sweatpants for women, eventually insisting that I try a pair myself.

Little did I know: This would change everything.

For me, the main draw of Outdoor Voices’ CloudKnit pants is the slim-fit construction. It keeps you looking polished, but comfortable—something I’d never been able to find in sweats. The material has just enough give that you don’t feel like you’re wearing actual pants (it’s made from a polyester-spandex blend), but they’re not too stretchy that they lose their shape. They’re also so soft. And they don’t get any less soft after a wash. (Mine have gone through the washing machine a good 50 times, and they’re still one of the coziest pieces I own.)

With these, I don’t feel like I’m wearing sweats pretending to be real pants. I feel incredibly put together when I put them on. I often pair them with a cashmere sweater or on a warmer day, a Breton stripe top. It’s a nice option for when I have a more casual day ahead, but still need to go out and look presentable. I now own them in two different colors—heather grey and navy—and wear them at least once a week.

And yes, my husband owns them, too. It’s actually the first item of clothing we both own. And we’re not embarrassed to wear them at the same time.

I’m proud to say everyone in my family has jumped on the #doingthings bandwagon—me, my husband, and every other relative that’s gotten it as a holiday gift. (Seriously, these pants are a great present.) I’m considering investing in the remaining two colors I don’t own, just so I always have a pair on hand, whenever the others are in the wash. You could say I’m obsessed.

You Need This: I Don't Really Exercise, But I Love Outdoor Voices' Exercise Dress

I’d never felt more seen—or rather, personally targeted—than the moment in Saturday Night Live’s “Pro-Chiller Leggings” skit when Kate McKinnon looks straight into the camera (and into my soul) and says of her leggings: “Women can do anything they want—and I want to do nothing.” Leggings are my clothes of choice for a streaming marathon, and pretty much never for actual physical activity; same goes for my sports bras and tank tops. (Just ask the 170 Instagram users who correctly guessed that my first workout selfie of 2018 would also be my last.)

Despite my track record of stockpiling activewear for non-fitness, I was intrigued by the concept of Outdoor VoicesExercise Dress, which debuted in May. It promised to withstand intense workouts while still looking super-cute, as evidenced by all the influencer #OOTDs timed to its launch.

We bring you the trends. You make them your own. Sign up for our daily newsletter to find the best fashion for YOU.

I was draw to the Instagram-friendly design and its comfortable appearance—the Exercise Dress looked like a put-together alternative to the workout gear I was already wearing every weekend. Never mind that I had no intention of rollerblading, speed-walking, or dancercising in it: That baby-pink dress was cute as hell.

Even with my unathletic routine, the Exercise Dress made for an incredible addition to my routine. On lazy Saturdays when leaving the apartment just wasn’t in the cards, I’d slip it on, resume my current binge-watch, and give myself a gold star for changing out of my pajamas; when I eventually ventured out, I’d layer it over a white T-shirt to run errands and feel slightly less messy than I did in my leggings and college T-shirts. It made me feel like I put together an Outfit, rather than just any other athleisure-adjacent clothes. Plus, every time I wore the Exercise Dress, I got compliments on it.

I knew I couldn’t own a self-described Exercise Dress without doing some sort of exercise in it, though. So, during a recent trip to California, I scheduled some (light) hiking, to be able to test the style in the way it’s meant to be worn. And let me tell you: It more than lived up to its online hype.

No matter how I moved, I never felt limited by wearing the Exercise Dress. The sweat-wicking fabric rivals a sturdy tank top without the heavy material—it was lightweight and stretchy, breathable without sagging. My favorite feature, as I could only discover through actually working out in it, is the covert leotard liner inside the dress: Climbing a trail and running around outside, it held the dress in place without causing a Marilyn Monroe moment at the first sign of a breeze. Unless your cardio routine involves Rockette-high kicks, you can work out in a dress.

Some people say that good activewear can convince them to work out more. I’m all about the Sporty Spice vibes I get from wearing my exercise dress at home—but I won’t be donning it for real sports anytime soon.
