Friends Is Leaving Netflix for Good in January 2020


The day many Netflix users have dreaded for months is finally upon us: We now know when Friends is leaving the streaming platform.

This isn’t a total surprise, as the announcement that the show would move to Warner Bros. new streaming platform HBO Max came in July—but that doesn’t make it any less of a bummer. Plus, HBO Max isn’t slated to launch until the spring. That means there will be a few months without your Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and Ross fix.

As of January 1, 2020, Friends will no longer be streaming on the platform, according to the recently updated “availability” section on the show’s official landing page. HBO Max’s official launch date has not been announced yet.

“HBO Max will bring together the diverse riches of WarnerMedia to create programming and user experiences not seen before in a streaming platform,” WarnerMedia Entertainment and direct-to-consumer chairman Robert Greenblatt said about the acquisition at the time. “HBO’s world-class programming leads the way, the quality of which will be the guiding principle for our new array of Max Originals, our exciting acquisitions, and the very best of the Warner Bros. libraries, starting with the phenomenon that is Friends. Under the leadership of two of the strongest creative visionaries—Casey Bloys (HBO) and Kevin Reilly (original content and acquisitions)—and two of the most experienced digital experts, Tony Goncalves and Andy Forssell, I have no doubt they and their dedicated teams will deliver the world’s best storytelling to audiences of all ages wherever and whenever they want it.”

But your Friends will still be there for you through the holidays, thank goodness. So get your fill of Smelly Cat, Ugly Naked Guy, Mrs. Chanandler Bong, and all that ’90s fashion while you can and take heart in the news that a reunion special is reportedly in the works for HBO Max.

“We would love for there to be something,” Jennifer Aniston recently told Ellen DeGeneres. “But we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.”

Leaving Netflix in December 2019: Say Goodbye to These 53 TV Shows and Movies


Prime binge-watching season is upon us—because what better way is there to escape family drama during the holidays than tucking away with your laptop and a Netflix password? While there is always plenty to watch on the streaming platform (hello, The Crown season three!), some of your favorite shows and movies will be leaving in December, so plan accordingly.

If you’re a serious nature fan, be sure to catch up on all the episodes of Blue Planet and Frozen Planet before they depart at the beginning of the month. Seasons 7 through 11 of the late Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown are also not staying long on the streaming platform, but they are perfect for a Thanksgiving weekend binge. Coming to Netflix in December: These Movies and TV Shows Will Help You Survive the Holidays


Netflix has already started adding original Christmas content to its platform, and even more is coming in December. If you’ve already seen Let It Snow and Holiday in the Wild, there is a lot more on the way, including A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish, A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby, and A Family Reunion Christmas. There will be so much to watch while you unwrap presents this year.

If you’re starting to get a little tired of holiday flicks, don’t fret. There’s about 80-plus other titles you can browse, including the highly-anticipated Noah Baumbach film Marriage Story. Vanessa Hudgens's New Netflix Movie The Knight Before Christmas Looks So Good


Vanessa Hudgens stole Christmas last year when she appeared in the now-iconic Netflix holiday flick The Princess Switch. That project was her first foray into the Christmas movie genre, but it’s not her last. In addition to a second installment of The Princess Switch, she’s starring in the upcoming Netflix original The Knight Before Christmas, and the trailer, which dropped today, is perfect.

In the movie, Hudgens plays Brooke, a small-town science teacher who almost hits a time-traveling knight with her car (in a snowstorm, of course, because it’s Christmas). Josh Whitehouse stars as the knight, who wins her heart with all his talk of “value and virtue.” (He also, like, chops down a tree at one point.) No one believes the knight when he says he’s from a different time period, but Brooke is determined to help him. Obviously, romance ensues.

Vanessa Hudgens told Refinery29 recently that she’s very into the idea of becoming a holiday queen between The Knight Before Christmas and The Princess Switch movies. “I was really excited by the idea of being a staple in people’s homes for the holidays,” she said. “I knew if I was doing another Christmas movie, I needed to make sure that it was completely different.”

“It’s a crazy time in the world and everyone could use a bit of light-hearted love,” she continued. “If I can be a part of bringing families together at a time that can be difficult and allowing a little escapism or inspiration, I think that’s wonderful and beautiful.”

The Knight Before Christmas is just one of the many holiday television shows and movies Netflix is serving up this season. Movies like Let It Snow and Holiday in the Wild already have people buzzing, and there’s still more on the horizon. We can’t wait to tune in.

Kristin Davis's Netflix Movie Holiday in the Wild Was Four Years in the Making


What do you think makes Holiday in the Wild stand out from all the other holiday movies coming out this year?

Kristin: The fact that it’s shot in Africa, number one. Even if we leave out the animal part, it’s just in a different setting. It’s more of a travel-adventure movie, in a way; it just happens to be a Christmas movie, but we’re having Christmas in a different place—which is nice. It makes you think about your own Christmas traditions, and then you look at other people’s Christmas traditions and think about them in a new way. Rob [Lowe] brings so much wry humor, which I don’t think you always get in a Christmas movie.

It does feel like the holiday movie genre is having a bit of a renaissance. Why do you think it’s so popular?

Kristin: I think people are very stressed. The world is a stressful place, and the holidays are a time when hopefully we get a little break from that stress. People want entertainment that gives them a good feeling. It’s a nice break. People want to be together; they want to watch things they can watch with the whole family. It’s a time that’s become more important because of the continual 24-hour news cycle and all the things going on in the world. All the difficulties.

Would you be open to doing another holiday movie?

Kristin: Of course! Holiday in the Wild sets the bar pretty high. I think now I’m just going to have to only do holiday movies with animals!

Like a sequel?

Kristin: A sequel would be amazing. I don’t know exactly what we would do or what would happen. For me, shooting in South Africa and Zambia and being able to be around elephants, which is one of my big loves of my life, and getting to write a love letter in the script to the people who take care of them, it really is a dream come true. I never really actually thought the film would get made, so it would be hard to live up to this one.

What did you most relate to with your character, Kate? She sends her son off to college and within seconds her husband leaves her. She goes through a lot just in the first 10 minutes of this movie.

Kristin: I responded to her having her eyes open on this trip she ends up taking by herself to a whole other world and a whole other way people are living and to this crisis of elephant poaching that she had no idea about. I responded to that because that’s very much like my own life.

When it comes to your own holiday pop-culture consumption, what are you looking for?

Kristin: I’m looking for something that I can watch with my daughter [Gemma Rose]. She loves Christmas, and when you have kids it’s all about their enjoyment.

How do you think Charlotte York from Sex and the City would take to Kate’s situation in Holiday in the Wild?

Kristin: I think she would be exactly like me! If for some horrible reason Harry left her—which I don’t think he would—and she was going on a single trip to Zambia and found an orphan elephant, I think she’d respond exactly the way that Kate does or that I did.

Everything We Know About the New Shonda Rhimes Netflix Series, "Inventing Anna"


Ever since Shonda Rhimes announced her massive development deal with Netflix, we’ve anxiously awaited details on her new slate of shows. (Not to worry, Grey’s Anatomy fans, the medical drama is not going anywhere anytime soon.)

One show in particular piqued our interest: Inventing Anna. The limited series will tell the story of Anna Delvey (real name: Anna Sorokin), a woman in New York City who pretended to be a German heiress and scammed many members of the city’s elite party scene. “In Inventing Anna, a journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene—and stole their money as well,” Netflix says in a show description per Hollywood Reporter. “But is Anna New York’s biggest con woman or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream? Anna and the reporter form a dark, funny, love-hate bond as Anna awaits trial and our reporter fights the clock to answer the biggest question in NYC: Who is Anna Delvey?” Sorokin is currently in jail after being convicted of attempted grand larceny, three grand larceny counts and a misdemeanor charge of theft of services.

Now that details about the cast and the plot are starting to emerge, here’s everything we know so far—aside from the fact that we can’t wait to binge this show in one sitting.

The creative team: This will be the first new show created by Rhimes since Scandal, and she’ll also do the writing. Betsy Beers, who works on all the Shondaland shows will serve as an executive producer, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

The source material: Much like the film Hustlers, Inventing Anna is based on a New York magazine article by journalist Jessica Pressler. “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” was first published in May 2018 and attempted to unravel the tangled web of lies that the woman known as Anna Delvey told as she conned the high society set in New York out of money, hotel rooms and more in an effort to keep up her lavish lifestyle.

The cast: Netflix recently announced five major casting decisions for the show.

Julia Garner: Garner, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Ozark, will play Delvey. A press release from Netflix describes her as “a young woman in her mid-20s with a hard to place European accent who takes New York by storm. Either a brilliant businesswoman or a scammer extraordinaire, Anna in turn inspires loyalty, compassion, contempt, and obsession—all while leaving behind an emotional body count.”

Anna Chlumsky: The Veep alum will play Vivian, the reporter working on the story. Vivian is “working to salvage her career with just the right story. The Anna Delvey story is her golden ticket—she is willing to face any problem to get it. But as she works on the Anna story, there is one problem she never expected—Anna herself. The more Vivian pursues the truth about Anna, the more attached to Anna she becomes.”

Katie Lowes: The former Scandal star will play Rachel, “a natural born follower and her blind worship of Anna almost destroys her job, her credit and her life. But while her relationship with Anna is her greatest regret, the woman she becomes because of Anna may be Anna’s greatest creation.”

Laverne Cox: Cox is set to play Kacy Duke, “a celebrity trainer and life coach, Kacy gets sucked into the Anna whirlwind but is mature and centered enough to stay out of any real trouble. When she least expects it, in the wake of Anna’s crimes, Kacy finds herself becoming a coach to more than just Anna.”

Alexis Floyd: The actress, who you might remember as Tia on the most recent season of The Bold Type, will play Neff. Neff is “an aspiring filmmaker working as a hotel concierge, Neff knows New York and its people. Neff’s all style, all substance—more complex than most. She’s drawn in by Anna’s charm, but while passionate and loyal, she’s nobody’s fool.”

The air date: No release date has been announced as of yet.
