Another ‘Downton Abbey’ Movie Is Reportedly in the Works—Here’s What We Know

The Downton Abbey movie surprised and delighted longtime fans when it hit theaters in September. The film gave us so many big screen gems—a ballroom scene, a royal plot line, tons of Violet Crawley zingers. It was so well received, in fact, that the creators have reportedly started discussing a potential follow-up film. Nothing is set in stone, but just the idea of more Downton is exciting, and we’re already keeping an eye out for details. Here’s what we know so far about the possibility of a second film.

The cast wants to work together again.

The Downton Abbey regulars have talked about how much fun it was to get the team back together for the movie. Michelle Dockery, who plays eldest Crawley sister Mary, indicated that she definitely welcomes another chance to work with the cast. “Because we loved doing it so much, [when we wrapped] it was definitely that feeling like, Oh, we could do this again, and it would be wonderful to all get back together,” she told *Harper’s Bazaar*. She added that a lot of it would be up to the film’s reception, which has been great so far. “We have such a good time. But that really depends on how it’s received. It will be really interesting to see the reaction,” she said.

Joanne Froggatt, who plays Anna Bates, also seemed excited about the idea and said that, to her, the story “never ends.” But she added, “I guess it’s down to the fans, isn’t it? I mean, if it’s popular and people love it, and, of course, there’s scope to do something else.”

The first film’s box office numbers might be the deciding factor for a second movie.

According to *The Sun*, “a sequel is already in the pipeline” because of how much money the first film made. It took in about $73 million in the U.S. and about $138 million worldwide. That bodes well for a sequel; a source told The Sun that “the commercial viability of a second film is now a dead cert, so Julian has been told to start putting pen to paper on the follow-up.”

Writer Julian Fellows is already thinking about ideas.

The Sun also reports that the show’s writer, Julian Fellowes, is already writing a script. He didn’t confirm or deny the rumors, telling *Vanity Fair* simply, “I mean, I wouldn’t mind making another film. We were very happy making this one. So let’s see what happens.”

Allen Leech, the actor who plays Tom Branson, made it clear to the Hollywood Reporter that Fellowes is prolific and probably already finalizing a plot. “What I love about what Julian always does is when it looks like he’s finishing a storyline, he’s actually starting one,” he said. “It would be very interesting to see what would happen. I think we would all be up for it. It all comes down to how this one does. If people really love it and there really is an appetite, then why wouldn’t we do it?”

Blake Lively Has So Many Hair Changes in the Trailer for Her New Movie, The Rhythm Section

Blake Lively is going into assassin mode with her new movie, The Rhythm Section. The trailer for the action blockbuster dropped on Thursday, September 19, and it involves lots of intense fight scenes and car crashes, and many wig changes. In the span of just a few seconds, we see Lively rock short black hair, a shaggy blond cut, and long, red femme-fatale-style waves. So. Many. Costume. Changes.

The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Mark Burnell. It’s directed by Reed Morano (who was behind several episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale), and Lively stars alongside Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown. She plays Stephanie, a woman who seeks revenge on the people who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family.

Watch the trailer in full for yourself, below. Take note of the hair!

Lively, who appeared last in the delightfully bonkers A Simple Favor, shared in 2017 that she’d be starring in The Rhythm Section. “Yes. Yes. Yes!!! I couldn’t be more excited to be bringing this incredible and complex ? hero to life,” she wrote. This is just one of many diverse roles Lively has played over the years. According to IMDb, Lively’s next project is an adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel The Husband’s Secret. No other costars for that project have been announced yet.

The Rhythm Section was, unfortunately, met with a few challenges. The Hollywood Reporter wrote back in January of last year that production was temporarily shut down after Lively suffered a hand injury. The release date was moved from February 2019 to January 2020. Luckily it looks as though Lively was a champ and recovered quickly. In fact, we’re wondering how many of those intense, high-flying stunts from the trailer were her work. Serena van der Woodsen is absolutely shaking.

The Rhythm Section hits theaters January 31, 2020.

Hustlers Director Lorene Scafaria Made the Best Movie of the Year—Here's How She Did It

“We’ve seen so many scenes in strip clubs in other movies and TV shows, but so few from a dancer’s perspective,” Hustlers director, writer, and producer Lorene Scafaria tells me. The film, based on a New York magazine article by Jessica Pressler, stars Constance Wu and Jennifer Lopez as the ringleaders of a group of strippers who scammed their wealthy Wall Street clients using a mix of drugs, smarts, and sex appeal. “I was just really excited to walk in their shoes, literally, tell the story through their eyes, and explore a world that maybe we think we know but don’t really unless we’ve worked there.”

That desire to tell the women’s lives from their perspective—and understanding the limitations and challenges in doing so—is why Scafaria was the best person to put this story to screen. In another’s hands, the film could have easily turned into an over-sexed romp a la Showgirls or a weepy cautionary tale. Scafaria hits the right tone, though: She doesn’t shy away from all the fun and nudity one might find in a strip club without sacrificing the gravitas that happens as the dancers’ lives spin out of control.

Lili Reinhart, Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, and Constance Wu play a group of strippers who con their wealthy clients.

Scafaria says she did a lot of research beyond the source material to get it right. In addition to meeting with dancers and other club employees who worked during the movie’s time period (roughly 2007 to 2013), she hired a stripper consultant to read an early script and be available on set during filming. She also looked at the article in a new light. “Reading between the lines of the article, I got inspiration because I thought, This is a really interesting friendship story,” she tells me. “I wanted to incorporate that part of it as much as anything else.”

All that research and careful attention to tone paid off: The film has an 87% approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and critics are already calling it a serious Oscars contender.

So what does it take to create the movie of the year? Scafaria breaks down the film’s biggest moments and themes, below. Some spoilers ahead.

The Athleticism

When Lopez’s character, Ramona, first teaches Wu’s Destiny how to pole dance, it’s set to Chopin. The message: Pole dancing is an art form, requiring as much skill as any master classical pianist. Scafaria tells me she wrote the Chopin music cues into the script because the classical composer’s songs are frequently taught to student pianists—a fitting comparison to Ramona, who shows Destiny the ropes of the strip club. “These are songs that require a lot of flexibility and sincerity,” Scafaria says. “To me, that felt like what’s required of these dancers on the pole. The Chopin pieces were always the sound of the movie, and the sound of the work that the women do.”

But they’re not just artists—they’re athletes. Watch Lopez’s pole-dancing workout videos for proof of that. “I wanted to show these women in power and in control,” Scafaria says. “In a lot of ways, I approached it like a sports movie because I wanted to highlight the athleticism of what they do, the strength that’s involved. There’s a lot of beauty and grace to it.”

The Cameos

The inclusion of music’s hottest names Cardi B and Lizzo in Hustlers has been much publicized, but they’re doing more than just lending star power to the IMDB page. Both women play strippers at the club during its last glory days—right before the economic recession hit—and their time on screen is equal parts hilarious and nuanced. “It was very exciting to see women like Cardi and Lizzo just come and coexist in the same movie as all of these other performers from a lot of different walks of life,” Scafaria says. “Actors, singers, dancers, strippers…to see them all in one room together was really something.”

Cardi B was particularly brilliant casting because she’s famously worked as a stripper before. Scafaria says Cardi brought her signature high energy to the set. “I wanted her to make the lines her own,” she says. “If anything didn’t feel authentic to her, I wanted her to call it out. But it wasn’t until we were there shooting scenes that I really got to see her bring it to life. She’s such a natural. Everybody knows how funny she is—she’s an incredible personality—so I’m sure nobody’s surprised that the kinds of improvisation she could throw around [was amazing].”

'Hustlers' Movie Reviews: Critics Are Already Calling It the Movie of the Year

If Hustlers arrived in theaters to lukewarm reviews, I’d probably still see it. After all, it’s based on a true story that’s inherently cinematic: A tale of New York City strippers who swindle Wall Street men out of their money after falling on hard times in the 2008 recession. On top of that, it features powerful leading women including Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Lizzo, and Lili Reinhart in the cast.

Early reviews are putting any doubts about Hustlers‘s merit to rest. Critics don’t think Hustlers is merely “good”—they think it’s already an Oscars contender. Hustlers premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to rapturous reviews. Over on Twitter, #Hustlers was trending on Sunday, September 8, with hundreds of resoundingly positive comments. Ahead of its wide release in theaters, it has a 92% approval rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Much of the praise for Hustlers is dedicated to Jennifer Lopez, who fronts the film as the ringleader Ramona. In fact, some reviewers say she could likely be in the running for her first Academy Award. Frankly, it’s thrilling to see a criminally underrated performer get her due from prestige film outlets. (Super Bowl planners, I hope you’ll finally give her that rumored half time show after this.)

Plus, early reviews suggest that Hustlers expertly examines the nuances of stripping as a profession. The women in the film aren’t one-dimensional objects dancing for patrons at a club: They’re entrepreneurs, parents, friends, and fully-realized women trying to make the most of their line of work. Much of that distinction was made possible by director Lorene Scarfaria, who adapted the film’s script from the New York story it’s based off of and hired consultants to advise on the film.

Hustlers wasn’t made in a vacuum; it’s the latest movie in a string of standout projects that are led and performed by women. And we need more women-led success stories like it in Hollywood. Women account for 51% of moviegoers, yet they’re 4% of directors and 15% of writers in the entire industry. In a world where some studios hold onto the belief that women can’t lead critical darlings or box office successes, it’s thrilling to see critics lending their support to a movie without a single leading man.

Bombshell: Everything We Know About the Fox News-Inspired Movie

Back in 2016, a massive scandal roiled Fox News, as sexual harassment allegations piled up against the late Roger Ailes, who was the former CEO and chairman. One of the women who came forward with accusations was among the network’s most recognizable names: Gretchen Carlson. Now, a new film, aptly tiled Bombshell, is dramatizing the story and bringing it to the big screen.

According to a synopsis, the film is a look “inside the most powerful and controversial media empire of all time, Fox News, and the explosive story of the women who brought down the infamous man who created it.” The teaser itself is minimal but communicates that some major drama is brewing.

Here’s everything we know about the film so far:

The cast is excellent. Charlize Theron is playing Megyn Kelly; Nicole Kidman is playing Gretchen Carlson; and Margot Robbie is playing a fictional associate producer named Kayla Pospisil. John Lithgow is portraying Roger Ailes, while Connie Britton is playing his wife, Beth Ailes. Meanwhile, Allison Janney is going to play Ailes’ lawyer, while Kate McKinnon is filling out the cast as a Fox News employee.

[embedded content]

The film was directed by Jay Roach. Roach helmed the HBO movie Game Change about Sarah Palin, so political fare isn’t new territory for him.

It’s coming just in time for the holidays. The film is going to have stiff competition when it drops on December 20. The polarizing Cats adaptation comes out on the same day, and the Greta Gerwig-directed version of Little Women makes its grand debut only a few days later. Still, Bombshell seems like it’ll be the right fit for anyone who wants to see intense, slow-brewing drama portrayed by some of the best actors out there.

We will update this post with more information about the movie as it comes in.

Lifetime's College Admissions Scandal Movie: Everything We Know So Far

Last month, Lifetime announced it was making a movie about the college admissions scandal that captivated the Internet earlier this year. If you’re unfamiliar about this real-life case, it involved a group of wealthy parents, including actors Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman, who took illegal measures to secure their children’s spots at competitive universities. Huffman pled guilty to the federal charges brought against her, while Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, are awaiting trial.

The working title of the movie is hilariously straightforward: College Admissions Scandal. On August 12, Entertainment Weekly dropped some enticing new updates about the cast and the production. Here’s everything we know so far:

The plot. According to the official synopsis, the film will “follow two wealthy mothers who share an obsession with getting their teenagers into the best possible college. When charismatic college admissions consultant Rick Singer offers a side door into the prestigious institutions of their dreams, they willingly partake with visions of coveted acceptance letters in their heads. But when Singer cooperates with the FBI and pleads guilty, the mothers who risked everything for their kids must face the consequences of their crimes and the loss of trust and respect from their families.”

The cast. According to EW, Penelope Ann Miller and Mia Kirshner will play the film’s leads: Caroline, an interior designer, and Bethany, a financial services firm owner. Both of them begin working with Rick Singer, the real-life college admissions consultant at the center of the scandal, in order to get their children into elite colleges. Michael Shanks, the Canadian actor from Saving Hope, is reportedly set to play Singer.

It appears Caroline and Bethany are fictional characters in this story who are most likely based on several people in the college admissions scandal. They don’t seem to be directly based on Loughlin or Huffman.

Release date. There’s still no set release date, but production on the film is slated to start this year.
