Captain Marvel Broke Box Office Records With a $455 Million Opening Weekend

Marvel’s first female-led superhero movie is officially a record-breaking success: Captain Marvel made a reported $153 million in its opening weekend, just in the U.S. alone. It brought in another $302 million internationally for a huge total of $455 million worldwide ticket sales, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, a pilot who becomes Captain Marvel after she finds herself in the middle of an intergalactic war. It’s also the first in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to have a woman behind the camera—co-director and writer, Anna Boden.

Those numbers make Captain Marvel the biggest opening of 2019, as well as the first film to break the $100 million dollar mark this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the global sales also make Captain Marvel the biggest launch for a female-fronted film ever and the second-largest superhero film behind Avengers: Infinity War. It’s the sixth-best opening worldwide of all time.

Clearly, moviegoers were ready for a female superhero to take charge in her own piece of the franchise. This, along with the smashing success of Wonder Woman, should put an end to any doubts that female superheroes can’t sell at the box office.

Fans took to social media to give their own mini-reviews after seeing the film. “I saw Captain Marvel tonight,” wrote one user. “I am such a fan of the @kellysue comics, and was KINDA nervous. Because SOMETIMES screen things aren’t as good as paper things. BUT I LOVED IT. Truly. Madly. Deeply. #HigherFurtherFaster” Another said, “I just wanted to tell you that we WE ARE SAFE NOW MISS CAPTAIN MARVEL IS HERE AND SHE IS GLOWING.”

“#CaptainMarvel was good fun, and the backlash against it pre-release was ridiculous,” said another user. “Go see it and support it – shouldn’t matter to whiny nerds what gender or race the lead in a Marvel movie is, it’s still a Marvel movie. Representation clearly matters.”

Next up for Captain Marvel? She’ll help take on Thanos when Avengers: Endgame opens on April 26.

Ariana Grande Had the Best Response to Reports of a $1.5 Million Tattoo-Removal Offer

You might have heard that Ariana Grande had a slight ink mishap last week. She wanted to get a tattoo on her palm that said “7 Rings”—the name of her new single—in Japanese kanji. But some of the significance was, uh, lost in translation. The tattoo translated to “shichirin,” which means “small Japanese barbecue grill.” Delicious, but not really what Grande was going for.

The error made news, but Grande was characteristically chill about the whole incident—she even owned up to the mistake in a tweet. “Indeed, I left out ‘つの指’ which should have gone in between,” Grande tweeted. “It hurt like fuck n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won’t last so if I miss it enough I’ll suffer thru the whole thing next time.” (She also confirmed that she really enjoys tiny BBQ grills.)

She then tried to fix it, posting the modified tattoo in her Instagram Stories. But even her second attempt wasn’t quite right: The tattoo now reportedly reads, “Japanese BBQ finger.”

That’s when companies eager for PR are said to have piped up: TMZ reported that a company called LaserAway, which specializes in tattoo removal, offered on Friday to remove the ink in exchange for her appearance in a shoot for the company and some social media shoutouts. “Sources”—take that as you will—told TMZ the deal was worth around $1.5 million.

Her manager, Scooter Braun, told TMZ that he “can’t speak” for Grande because they hadn’t received the letter, but joked he’d be willing to get a tattoo and then have it removed for that chunk of change (same, TBH).

Grande, however, had a much more direct response: She quote-tweeted TMZ’s headline from the story and added her own answer right above it. “i’ll give y’all a million to get off my nuts,” she said.

And that, we think, is the matter settled.

CBS Is Donating $20 Million From Les Moonves' Severance Package to 18 Women's Organizations

On Friday, CBS announced it will donate $20 million to 18 women’s organizations that focus on eliminating sexual harassment in the workplace. The move comes as CBS grapples with multiple accusations of misconduct leveled against high-profile leaders at the organization.

CBS said earlier this year that it planned to take funds out of former CEO Les Moonves’ $140 million severance package and apply them toward women’s rights causes. They have now identified the recipients of the money, which include Time’s Up, Catalyst, the Freedom Forum Institute’s Power Shift Project, the International Women’s Media Foundation, Press Forward, and the Women’s Media Center. Reportedly, two of the organizations will also disperse some of the money to smaller women’s organizations.

Moonves stepped down in September after at least 12 women came forward to accuse him of behavior that ranged from lewd comments to assault. Along with Moonves, allegations have also been made against former show host Charlie Rose and 60 Minutes producer Jeff Fager, both of whom are no longer with the company.

A recent investigation into CBS’s history and culture of harassment also revealed that the network had paid actress Eliza Dushku $9.5 million in January to settle a dispute about how it handles harassment complaints she made about actor Michael Weatherly. According to documents obtained by The New York Times, Dushku had felt uncomfortable after Weatherly allegedly made comments about rape, a threesome, and her physical appearance.

For many, however, CBS’s $20 million pledge still not enough. Time’s Up, which will received $2 million toward an initiative aimed at increasing female representation in the entertainment industry, had previously urged the company to donate all of Moonves’ severance package.

“We also urge that the full amount reserved for Mr. Moonves’ severance be contributed to organizations that address sexual harassment and workplace safety. That is $120 million dollars that will either go to Mr. Moonves or back into the coffers of the company that allowed the culture created by Mr. Moonves to continue,” the organization wrote in a letter this September. “Or that $120 million can create change by going to organizations—and there are many impactful organizations—that can help women of all kinds. The choice is yours. But the answer is obvious. We ask that you not dishonor the bravery of those who have come forward by spending that money unwisely.”

In a joint statement released by all of the groups, the 18 organizations thanked CBS for the donation, but made it clear it doesn’t excuse the misbehaviors that have occurred at the highest levels of the company.

“We thank CBS for these donations. We also recognize these funds are not a panacea, nor do they erase or absolve decades of bad behavior,” the groups wrote.

Eliza Dushku Received A $9.5 Million Settlement From CBS Over Sexual Harassment Complaints Involving Michael Weatherly

CBS has been rocked by serious allegations of misconduct made against its former chief executive Leslie Moonves and former anchor Charlie Rose, and this week, it found itself at the center of yet another sexual harassment scandal, this time involving actress Eliza Dushku.

The New York Times published an article on Thursday that reports that in January 2018, amid a national conversation around MeToo and workplace misconduct, the network paid Dushku $9.5 million to settle complaints for being written off the series Bull—something that happened after she had confronted the show’s star Michael Weatherly for making inappropriate comments to her about rape, a threesome, and her physical appearance, according to documents reviewed by the Times.

According to internal CBS investigation reports](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/13/business/media/cbs-bull-weatherly-dushku-sexual-harassment.html) obtained and reviewed by the Times, Dushku had signed on to do three episodes of Bull, and there had been plans for her to join the cast as a series regular. However, reports show that she felt uncomfortable after Weatherly made remarks in front of the show’s cast and crew about her appearance, including saying on one occasion that “he would bend her over his leg and spank her.” Dushku also told CBS investigators that he made a crack about having a threesome with her and another male cast member, and at another point joked about taking her into his “rape van.”

Dushku reportedly confronted Weatherly about his behavior and, shortly after, she was written off the show. Believing she’d been forced off in retaliation for complaining about Weatherly, the Times says Dushku entered a mediation process with CBS. The network launched an internal investigation, during which the Times claims that CBS’ chief compliance officer Mark Engstrom submitted footage of Dushku cursing on set, purportedly to undermine her complaints. However, investigators wrote in their report that the outtakes were a “gold mine” since they “actually captured some of the harassment on film.” The network eventually agreed to pay Dushku roughly what she would have earned if she had stayed on the show for four seasons, and the terms of the settlement prohibited her from speaking publicly about her experiences.

In a statement to The Times, CBS confirmed the settlement.

“The allegations in Ms. Dushku’s claims are an example that, while we remain committed to a culture defined by a safe, inclusive and respectful workplace, our work is far from done,” CBS said in a statement. “The settlement of these claims reflects the projected amount that Ms. Dushku would have received for the balance of her contract as a series regular, and was determined in a mutually agreed upon mediation process at the time.”

In another statement, Weatherly admitted that he had made “some jokes mocking some lines in the script” that had made Dushku uncomfortable, and apologized for his behavior.

“When Eliza told me that she wasn’t comfortable with my language and attempt at humor, I was mortified to have offended her and immediately apologized. After reflecting on this further, I better understand that what I said was both not funny and not appropriate and I am sorry and regret the pain this caused Eliza,” he said.

At least one incident on the set left Dushku feeling “disgusting and violated,” according to the investigation notes. Dushku’s settlement came to light as part of a company review conducted by the law firms Covington & Burling and Debevoise & Plimpton, and ordered by CBS, after multiple women came forward to accuse Moonves of misconduct. Moonves stepped down from CBS in September, but the company board still has to decide if he will receive a $120 million severance package that many women have said he does not deserve. CBS also fired “60 Minutes” producer Jeff Fager this year, following complaints that he had harassed women at work and sent a threatening text to a reporter. The incident with Dushku is another that points to a culture of harassment and misconduct at the network.

The Easy Mascara Trick That Makes My Lashes Look a Million Times Better

Celebrity beauty tricks are a dime a dozen, but the ones that actually work are rare. Like, let’s be real: Most celebrities look great because they have a team of dedicated professionals paid to help them look that way. Power to them, but it means I take all celebrity advice, and routines, with a grain of salt. You never know—maybe a model does drink eight glasses of water a day, but she also dips in for a Clear + Brilliant laser treatment every six months. There’s only one celebrity beauty trick that I swear by, and it came from Dakota Johnson’s grandmother, Tippi Hedren.

That’s right. When Glamour interviewed Johnson last year, she dropped one tidbit of knowledge that I’ve been following religiously ever since. Apparently, Dakota was applying mascara one day when Tippi stepped in and set her straight. “She [actress Tippi Hedren] was watching me put my mascara on once, and told me that if you hold the mirror down low and put the mascara on while looking downward, you will get the most coverage from the base of the lashes to the tips. And, of course, she’s right! She’s a fucking movie star; she’s a legend!”

It wasn’t until a friend recently commented that I rarely get dark smudges on the top of my lids anymore (which is regular life when you have deep-set eyes) that it even occurred to me to share how much of a game-changer this trick is. Now, instead of applying mascara straight-on, brushing my lashes up and inevitably walking away with dark black marks, I use the Tippi technique. I take a hand mirror and hold it beneath my chin, then brush mascara onto my lashes while looking down into the mirror. It might sound a little basic, but it’s revolutionary.

The position makes it 10 times easier to comb the mascara wand through your lashes, since you’re looking down, and your visibility doesn’t change as you brush the mascara on (like it does when you’re looking straight into the mirror and the wand’s right in front of your eye). It even lets me wiggle the wand into the base of my lashes, as I’ve heard makeup artists instruct for so many years. If I’d tried to “wiggle the wand into the base of my lashes” from my old, straight-on position, it’d be a smudgy disaster. Now it’s a quick and easy maneuver that gives me huge lashes.

Prepare to never go back to your old ways after you try it. I sure haven’t.
