Kate Middleton Just Stole the (Royal Variety) Show in This Icy Blue Gown


Kate Middleton has rightfully been a style icon ever since she stunned the world with her iconic Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding gown in 2011. She and stylist Natasha Archer are collectively genius at incorporating looks from the high street (that’s British for “stores we normal people shop at”) into her wardrobe, leaving us #blessed with outfit inspiration courtesy of favorites like L.K. Bennett, Zara, and J.Crew. But one thing she’s always been incredible at? Getting dressed up to the nines—we’re talking glittery, gorgeous gowns that are truly fit for a princess.

On Friday night, Middleton and Prince William attended the Royal Variety Performance in London where she made a statement in a gown one of her go-to designers, Jenny Packham. She walked the red carpet in an icy blue, floor-length dress that makes her look exactly like a certain Disney princess from Frozen.

The gown’s entire sheer blue overlay is embellished with silver and blue sequins and transparent floral beads. Kate paired it with a pair of silver heels to match. Take a look at the whole ensemble—gorgeous, no?

We’ve seen this color on her before—she seems to keep it in rotation in her wardrobe, and she looks fantastic each time. She wore a similar shade of silvery blue, this time with a lace overlay, back in October for her first appearance after announcing her third pregnancy. This latest evening-wear pick, however, also reminds us almost exactly of a very Blair Waldorf look she had going earlier this year in March during a visit to Paris. Also by Jenny Packham, her Paris gown shared the icy blue, sheer neckline, shimmery embellishment of her most recent dress—although the latter was definitely the most glam out of the two.

After all, when you know what you like, stick with it—and that guidance definitely extends to royalty, too.

5 Beauty Habits Kate Middleton Always Does


For someone who spends so much time in the public eye, it’s kind of remarkable that Kate Middleton‘s beauty routine is still by and large under wraps. Thank that famous Buckingham Palace privacy, but the secrets behind how Middleton gets ready every morning are few and far between—which is rough, because as anyone with eyes can see, the duchess knows makeup (and skin care, and hair care. Those shiny waves might be thanks to frequent blowouts, but there has to be more to it than that).

So as unabashed Middleton fans, we’ve been keeping our eye on her beauty habits, and the precious intel that leaks out about her beauty routine. Here, read on for the secrets that help her pull off royal visit after royal visit.

1. Nude nail polish is the go-to.
And it’s not just because Middleton’s a fan of the non-color (although, what we’d give to hear her request Essie’s Topless and Barefoot). The real reason that Middleton never wears red nail polish comes down to royal order. According to Marie Claire U.K., only natural-looking nails are permitted at official royal events. We can’t speak to what she wears in her downtime, but given nude polish’s knack for making your fingers look long and elegant, it’s hard to imagine she’s switching off-camera.

2. She always cuts her hair before announcing she’s pregnant.
When we heard this rumor back in September, it’s no exaggeration to say our minds were blown. Because it turns out, Middleton’s pregnancy tell was in plain sight all along: right before she has something big to announce, Middleton turns to her hairstylist for a chop. It completely makes sense, too. She knows she’ll be getting tons of press coverage soon, and everyone will be taking her photo (even more than usual), so it’s actually genius to make sure she won’t have to worry about her hair. Evidence: right this way.

3. She combines shampoo and conditioner.
Yeah, we were also surprised to learn this one—our experience with 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioners when they first came out were rough, to say the least. But from the mouth of Middleton’s own hairstylist, it’s the truth. Richard Ward, the man responsible for Middleton’s hair, sends her home with the Cleanse and Condition duo from his salon’s Chelsea Collection. Described as a “botanical non-lather holistic shampoo,” the sulfate-free formula is gentle and moisturizing enough to clean and hydrate your hair in one step (and only costs $12).

4. She adds volume to her hair in an unexpected place.
So yes, we all know that Kate Middleton’s eternally shiny hair comes with help from professional stylists on call. But that’s not to say you can’t get her blowout at home, especially when we’ve noticed she always uses one game-changing trick to make her hair look thick. Said trick? Adding height to the crown of her head. The volume comes from teasing your crown with a comb at the roots, and then smoothing your top layer of hair over it with a brush. The strategy’s been around since the ’60s, but clearly doesn’t age.

5. She keeps face oil on hand.
Middleton phased over to a natural skin care routine for her pregnancy with Charlotte, and as a royal source told US Weekly, that meant switching her skin care products out for all-natural rosehip oil. According to the source, “Kate continues to use rosehip oil in her daily skin care regimen. She loves the effect is has on her skin. [Her mother] Carole [Middleton] is also a fan.” Anyone who’s tried Trilogy’s Rosehip Oil (Middleton’s pick) can vouch for the effects—your skin immediately turns velvety, soft, and smooth.

Kate Middleton Reportedly Said Prince William Had Trouble Getting Used to Being a Dad


Apparently, parenting wasn’t always a royal flush for Prince William. During a visit to the Hornsey Road Children’s Centre in London on Tuesday, Kate Middleton reportedly told another parent that it took some time for her husband to get used to being a dad after Prince George was born, in July 2013.

Billy, a single dad who is raising his seven-month-old daughter, Violet, by himself, told British magazine Hello! that the duchess of Cambridge gave him some helpful reassurance after he spoke to her about his struggles with early fatherhood. “She was saying William was sort of similar, and I just wanted to let her know how Family Action have been there for me and I think they need more support,” he said. (Family Action is a U.K.-based organization that provides financial and emotional support to families in need, and works closely with the Children’s Centre.)

Another parent who spoke to Princess Kate at the Hornsey Road Children’s Centre told Hello! about her own down-to-earth interaction with the royal, who is expecting her third child in April. “She was asking about what [my son] liked, and he said he liked airplanes, and she was asking if he’d seen a Spitfire, and we said we liked going to the Science Museum and RAF museum,” Michelle, a mother of two, said. “She was saying how George likes helicopters, she was saying about the top floor of the Science Museum where the helicopters are.”

Middleton also opened up about two-year-old Princess Charlotte‘s interests while accepting a bouquet of flowers from six-year-old Nevaeh Richardson-Natiko, according to People. “She asked me what my favorite color is,” Richardson-Natiko said. “I said it was pink, and she said that’s Charlotte’s favorite color too.”

The duchess had to cancel several public appearances recently due to hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that she also experienced during her first two pregnancies and which forced her to announce her third pregnancy somewhat early. But in recent weeks she has resumed her normal activities, hosting a Buckingham Palace reception honoring workers in the mental health field, alongside princes William and Harry; spent a day at London’s National Tennis Centre; and, best of all, danced with Paddington Bear at a children’s charity event.

Kate Middleton Debuted a New Bob Hairstyle


Only a day after we got done obsessing over Kate Middleton‘s wine-colored dress—and promptly vowing to give up our LBDs for this cooler fall shade—the duchess pulled another fast one on us. And this look, debuted during a Remembrance Sunday ceremony, is like nothing like we’ve ever seen on her before. What happened, one might inquire?

Kate wore her hair in a bob.

Yes, Kate of the Perpetually Shiny Signature Mid-Length Hair changed up her style and wore her hair about an inch above her shoulders. We’ve seen her with full-frontal bangs, side-swept bangs, and without bangs. We’ve tracked her haircuts, which vary from mid-back to just below the shoulders. Heck, we’ve seen other royals copy her hair, so you know it’s a thing. We’ve also checked out a conspiracy theory that correlates her major hair changes to impending pregnancy announcements (something this dramatic surely heralds quintuplets, if it indeed proves true). But this is a different look for her.

Tucked under a black broad-brimmed hat that befitted the occasion, she offset her curls with statement earrings in a sunburst shape, anchored by a pearl.

Upon extensive observation, this appears to be faux bob. Look closely and it’s obvious her ends are curled under, and from the back, you can see a few bits pinned up peeking through. Blake Lively also wore a remarkably similar look recently. It’s a great option to switch things up for a day or an event, but it’s also a smart way to test out a dramatic new look before you fully commit to the cut. We have to say: if Kate opts to chop, she could pull it off.

Kate Middleton Will Make You Want a Wine-Colored Dress This Fall


Winter is coming, and with it the search for the perfect all-purpose dress—good for work, going out, and dinners with in-laws and parties and god knows whatever else this holiday season will throw at you. Most of the time, however, these tend to be black: the color is at once chic and formal, and cool and casual. Until now, that is: Kate Middleton‘s latest outfit will make you want a wine-colored dress really, really badly. We’ve seen the rich, plummy Bordeaux color popping up almost everywhere this winter, from H&M capsule-collection sweaters to more luxe velvet pieces—even on Taylor Swift’s merch. The shade is both very classic and very of-the-moment, and if you spill some actual Bordeaux on it (travesties are bound to happen!), no one will know.

Hailing from the British line Goat, Kate’s particular Eloise Tunic Dress has a lot going for it, even beyond the color. We’re really loving the classic shift cut—camouflager of holiday food babies, enabler of bralettes, and heaven in a base layer—and the rolled neck for some mid-century vibes. Also, if you look closely, those darts from the neck to the chest are genius for reining in the fabric in a bit. Check it out:

Kate Middleton Makes Us Want to Invest in a Winter Tracksuit


Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, mother to heir of the British throne, fashion inspiration to many, pulled off her most impressive sartorial feat: She wore a tracksuit in public and made it look impossibly chic. Can we get an “amen?”

The always-polished Duchess traded in her typical knee-length sheath dresses and fitted coats for a pair of side-striped sweats, sneakers, and a ponytail for a day at the National Tennis Centre in London, England. (Last December, she became Patron of the Lawn Tennis Association, taking over the role from The Queen who previously held the title for 64 years.)

Even for this sportier occasion, Middleton stuck to homegrown brands to source her outfit: She was wearing the Tuxedo Track Pant from the luxe activewear brand Monreal London.

The Duchess’ exact track pants can be purchased from Monreal London’s website—but regal athleisure doesn’t come cheap: It’ll cost you $345 to wear royal-approved sweats.

She paired the Tuxedo Track Pants with a white collared shirt and black jacket. Then, she laced up a pair of Nike Air Vapormax Flyknit sneakers, which you can snag from Nike for $190.

While visiting the National Tennis Centre, the Duchess participated in a coaching session with Johanna Konta, ambassador of the philanthropic organization Tennis for Kids. Kensington Palace tweeted some video’s of the Duchess’ morning playing tennis with the children.

This is by far the most casual ensemble we’ve seen Middleton wear since announcing her third pregnancy. (Recently she danced with Paddinton Bear in a peach Orla Kiely dress.) Though it makes sense with the occasion, her athleisure look was certainly unexpected from the Duchess—but we fully support it.
