Meredith and Derek's Relationship on *Grey's Anatomy* Wouldn't Happen in 2018

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) relationship is one of the most iconic in the Grey’s Anatomy universe. Their romance was as embedded into mid-2000s culture as Paris Hilton, Juicy Couture tracksuits, and chunky highlights. However, if Grey’s Anatomy were to premiere in 2018—in light of #MeToo and Time’s Up—their relationship would look completely different. In fact, it might not even exist.

That’s what GA showrunner Krista Vernoff told the Los Angeles Times in a new interview from this week.

“If you look at, for example, Meredith Grey [Ellen Pompeo] and Derek Shepherd [Patrick Dempsey] through the lens of Time’s Up and #MeToo, he was her boss, she was an intern, and she kept saying, ‘No, walk away from me,’ and he kept pursuing her, and that is probably not a story we would tell on the show today, and it’s a beautiful reflection of the changing times,” she said.

Vernoff says the show is taking active measures to ensure the on-screen romances mirror the changes in our culture. Look no further than Meredith’s relationship with resident Andrew DeLuca [Giacomo Gianniotti] for proof of that.

“This season, we’re doing a little bit of a reversal as we begin to build this love triangle that’s emerging with DeLuca as one the people in that triangle, and he is a resident and Meredith is an attending, and we’re having to address it differently than we ever would have before,” she said.

Vernoff continued, “We’re having to talk about and look at power dynamics. It is an ongoing conversation in the writer’s room. How do we tell that story in a way that feels honest and romantic and sexy and yet proactive and progressive?”

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursday nights at 8 P.M. ET on ABC.

Ted Mosby From 'How I Met Your Mother' Is Meredith Grey's Love Interest This Season

McDreamy is officially so 2015. As first reported by People, Josh Radnor—perhaps best known for playing Ted Mosby How I Met Your Mother—has joined Grey’s Anatomy as a new love interest for Ellen Pompeo’s character, Meredith Grey.

Details of his role are being kept under wraps, but ABC was nice enough to give us a few clues about his arrival: He and Meredith get set up on a “hot” blind date by friends in an episode that will air October 11. The network hasn’t specified whether or not Radnor will be sticking around for more than one episode, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Radnor, as you probably know, spent nine seasons as the beleaguered architect and college professor Ted Mosby on HIMYM, in which his quest to find his children’s “mother” was recounted years later to his children. He has since headlined the period drama Mercy Street and the musical drama Rise, but both were met with quick cancellations.

As for Pompeo, she’s hinted in a recent interview that when her current Grey’s contract expires—at the conclusion of season 16—she might leave the show to explore other career opportunities. “I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any kind of formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories we can tell. It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change,” she explained. “I think I’ve had an amazing training. I’ve had a master class in producing these last 14 years. I know every aspect of making a television show. Producing and directing is where I’m challenged and where I’m learning. It’s more interesting to me because it’s a skill I haven’t mastered yet.”

While sad, we can’t wait to see what she does next, should she indeed choose to leave. And in the meantime, we’re looking forward to her latest coupling.

Meredith Vieira Once Found a 'Huge Bag of Sex Toys' in Matt Lauer's Dressing Room

Following Matt Lauer’s prompt termination from NBC over allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct, some of the former Today host’s on-air moments are now coming under (warranted) scrutiny. Take a Today show sexual harassment parody, aired in 2012, in which Lauer makes light of inappropriate sexual advances in the office and paints himself as a victim. Or his uncomfortable interview with Anne Hathaway, also from 2012, that features Lauer making a creepy comment about an invasive up-skirt photo of the actress that was circulating at the time.

The latest clip to resurface comes from a 2016 episode of The Meredith Vieira Show. During an interview with her former Today co-host, Vieira gently chides Lauer about once finding a “huge bag of sex toys” in his dressing room closet.

“We had a guest on the show…she was a sex therapist,” Lauer said, trying to explain himself. “When she left, she gave each of us a shopping bag of stuff. True story. I didn’t know what to do. I put it in my closet in my dressing room.”

He then went on to add that, the very next day, former First Lady Laura Bush was a guest on the show and the Secret Service found the bag in his room during their security sweep—a revelation that caused Vieira, Savannah Guthrie (who was also part of the segment), and the audience to roar with laughter.

Of course, placed in context of Variety‘s explosive investigation alleging that, among other things, Lauer once gave a coworker a sex toy as a present along with a note detailing how he’d want ot use it on her, what was intended to be a risque but lighthearted moment takes on an entirely new—and disturbing—interpretation. And, for what it’s worth, Vieira didn’t get “a bag of stuff” from the therapist despite Lauer noting that she was the one who led the segment.

This wasn’t the only troubling moment between Lauer and Vieira. In another video—this one shared by TMZ—Lauer is caught on camera between staring at Vieira as she leans over the Today show set’s coffee table. “Nice sweater,” he began, before telling her, “Keep bending over like that. It’s a nice view.”

Just add both of these to the growing list of Lauer moments that make our skin crawl.

Meredith and Cristina Will Always Be the Best Couple on 'Grey's Anatomy'

Tonight, Grey’s Anatomy will air its 300th episode. It’s a momentous occasion for a devoted fan like me, who has watched every single episode (and most more than once). I’ve stuck with the show through good and bad—from the first couple of seasons, when missing an episode kept you out of the pop-culture conversation, through the admittedly not-so-great middle years, and out the other side to today, when a large swath of people are shocked to find out the show’s still on the air.

We loyal fans have truly seen it all, especially when it comes to relationships. Der and Mer. Burke and Cristina. Meredith and the vet. Derek and Addie. Denny and Izzie. Alex and Izzie. Izzie and George. (I’m still annoyed about that one.) Callie and George. Arizona and Callie. McSteamy and Lexie. Jackson and April. April and that paramedic she left at the altar. Bailey and Ben. Alex and Jo…seriously, the limit does not exist when it comes to couples on this show.

But there is one pairing that reigns supreme: Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang.

Derek “McDreamy” Shepard may have been Meredith’s great love, but her “person” will always be Cristina—and vice versa. And that’s not just because (spoiler!) Derek’s dead. Like many great relationships that have come before, these two (played by Ellen Pompeo and Sandra Oh) got serious over cocktails. I can’t even imagine calling someone your “person” not being a part of the vernacular, and it’s all thanks to Yang and Grey.

But being someone’s person is more than just hugs over boys, though those are super important. There’s a level of true and complete acceptance between Cristina and Meredith. They embrace each other’s perceived flaws—Cristina’s ambition, Meredith’s dark and twisty insides—sometimes even viewing them as strengths. That’s not to say that they haven’t had some emotionally-gutting fights, especially as Mer pursued both her career and a family at the same time. But never for a moment did I think they wouldn’t work it out.

These two will always choose each other—no “Pick Me, Choose Me, Love Me” speech required. The men in their lives, while loved wholly and deeply, come second and will often get the boot from their own beds if the ladies need each other. And they need each other a lot. I mean, a lot. They’ve gone through surgical residency, failed weddings, miscarriages, births, almost drownings, the death of parents and countless colleagues, friends and siblings, a hospital shooting, a plane crash, buying the hospital where they work (don’t ask!), and so many more crises that make for great TGIT viewing but can really test a relationship.

Through it all, Meredith and Cristina know that together they can face anything. Isn’t that everything you want out of a relationship? And when all else fails, they dance it out—like they did once last time before Cristina departed to take her dream job in Switzerland. Even her parting words to her forever bestie are perfect: “I gotta go. You stay here. You are a gifted surgeon with an extraordinary mind. Don’t let what he wants eclipse what you need. He’s very dreamy, but he’s not the sun. You are.” Swoon.

If only we could listen in on their FaceTime convos. Web spinoff perhaps, Shonda?

Until then, long live the Twisted Sisters.
