Prince Louis' Official Christening Pics Are Here—and He Looks Adorable


Prince Louis, littlest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton, celebrated the next big milestone in his royal infant life when he was christened last week in the Chapel Royal in St. James’s Palace, surrounded by his impressive relatives and close friends.

And although we had to wait a while for the official family shots, they’re finally here: On Sunday, the Kensington Palace Twitter account released the four official portraits taken after the ceremony—and they’re all beautiful.

Matt Holyoak, known as one of the world’s leading portrait photographers, took the official photos for the royal family. The portraits were shot in the Morning Room of Clarence House, where Louis’ royal grandparents, Prince Charles and Camilla, live.

“I was truly honored at being asked to take the official photographs at the christening of Prince Louis, and to witness at first hand such a happy event,” Holyoak said in a statement to People. “Everyone was so relaxed and in such good spirits, it was an absolute pleasure. I only hope I have captured some of that joy in my photographs.”

Holyoak also took Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary portraits last year. (Unfortunately, the monarchs weren’t able to attend the ceremony, due to some royally busy schedules.)

One of the photos features Prince William and Kate, plus George, Charlotte, and star of the show Louis, as well as Will and Kate’s parents (Prince Charles and Camilla, plus Carole and Michael Middleton). Kate’s siblings, James and Pippa, and Pippa’s husband James Matthews were also in attendance.

Also present: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, of course.

Next up is the “royals-only-please” one, with Harry, Meghan, Prince Charles, Camilla, William, Kate, and the three junior royals.

The third portrait is one of Will, Kate, and their three children.

Finally, a beautiful portrait of Kate and Prince Louis in the garden after his christening.

Adorable. It’s all adorable.

See Every Photo of the Royal Family at Prince Louis' Christening


While we were all trying to get back into work mode after a long holiday week, the royal family across the pond got dressed up in their finest to celebrate the christening of Prince Louis into the Church of England. All your faves—Meghan Markle! Prince Harry! Prince George! Princess Charlotte!—were there, save the queen and Prince Philip, who it was previously announced would not attend due to a busy schedule this week. Louis’ six godparents, all friends and family of Prince William and Kate Middleton, were also in attendance.

The special day also marks the first time the world has seen William and Kate out in public with their full family of five. (Little Louis didn’t attend his uncle Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding back in May.) Naturally, the family looked happy as can be, though it seemed the littlest prince slept through much of his big entrance. And, as with all things royal, there were many many fancy hats.

Here's the Special Meaning Behind Prince Louis' Christening Date


2018 has been a jam-packed year if you’re part of the royal family. Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed their youngest child, Prince Louis, into the world in April—and then Meghan Markle and Prince Harry celebrated their historic wedding in May. Now, there’s another big event just around the corner: Prince Louis will be christened on Monday, July 9.

Kensington Palace announced last month that Prince Louis’ christening will take place at the Chapel Royal of St. James’s Palace in London. The private 40-minute ceremony will be conducted by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and rumor has it that Baby Louis will wear the same white gown his siblings George and Charlotte wore for their own christenings (if you remember, George was christened in 2013 at the Chapel Royal, while Charlotte was christened at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Norfolk in 2015). The garment is a replica of a dress made for Queen Victoria’s oldest daughter in 1841.

The July 9 date is especially important in royal family history. As the Mirror noted, 71 years ago, in 1947, Elizabeth II (who hadn’t yet assumed the throne) announced that she was engaged to Philip Mountbatten. They had been engaged more about a year, but it didn’t become public until July 9. The rest is obviously history, and it’s fun to think of how it all kicked off on that special day. Now, the Queen and Prince Philip might get to relive that sweet moment while celebrating their youngest grandson.

As the day approaches, a few pictures of Kate’s own christening have emerged on social media. The images show the Duchess of Cambridge being christened on June 20, 1982. (We have a feeling Prince Louis is going to look just as cute as she did.)

There’s still no word on who the baby’s godparents will be, but that’s typically revealed on the day of the ceremony. Personally, we’re rooting for Meghan and Harry, although that’s unlikely, since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have picked close friends for George and Charlotte. Still, we can cross our fingers and hope it all stays in the family.

Here's Why Meghan Markle Probably Won't Be Prince Louis' Godmother


The great British tradition of taking bets on the behavior of the royal family has its eyes set on a new prize: predicting who will be named Prince Louis‘s godparents.

On Wednesday, Kensington Palace announced that Prince Louis will be christened on Monday, July 9, at the Chapel Royal at St James’s Palace in London. The godparents will be publicly announced at the christening.

Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is barely on the shortlist, at 14/1 odds, but the distinction will also most likely not go to her husband, Prince Harry, either. Instead of naming close immediately family, Prince William and Kate have opted in the past to honor close friends and confidants for their elder two children, and the trend is likely to continue.

Jessica Bridge, a representative from British bookmakers Ladbrokes commented, “As with George and Charlotte, [William and Kate] chose close and trusted friends and aides, rather than immediate family members, and the odds suggest that will be the same with little Prince Louis.”

But the odds are in more people’s favor than you might think, since the children of the royal family take more than two godparents. Princess Charlotte has five godparents and Prince George, as the heir to the throne, has seven.

According to Ladbrokes, the favorites for the role of godparent include longtime staff members to the royal family. Tiggy Pettifer, former assistant and nanny to William and Harry, is listed at 2/1 odds, and William’s most trusted aide, former private secretary Miguel Head, comes in at 5/4.

At 3/1, William’s stepsister Laura Lopes, daughter of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is next most likely, followed by Kate’s former secretary Rebecca Priestly, at 4/1. Friends of the royal family David Jardine-Paterson and Hugh van Cutsem both come from families that have had members selected to be godparents to Prince George and rank at 5/1.

Princess Diana’s sisters Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale are considered 6/1 odds. Farther down the list, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are at 7/1 odds, and Kate’s siblings Pippa and James Middleton trail at 10/1 odds.

You Probably Missed These 2 Adorable Details in Prince Louis' First Official Photos


Royals—they’re just like us! Well, maybe in this one case. Kensington Palace released an adorable photo of 3-year-old Princess Charlotte and newborn Prince Louis last night. And even though their older brother Prince George wasn’t present in the photograph, a part of him was.

After royal aficionados were finished swooning over the overwhelming amount of cuteness, they noticed Charlotte’s blue cardigan looked familiar. As it turns out, she borrowed her sweater from her older brother, who originally wore the sweater for another royal photograph.

George, who will be 5 in July, was around Charlotte’s current age when he was first photographed in the blue embroidered cardigan. Made by Spanish brand Fina Ejerique, it retailed for about $50. He paired it with maroon shorts and knee socks for his great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s official 90th birthday portrait back in 2016.

Shot by famed photographer Annie Lebowitz, the photograph features a then 3-year-old George standing proudly next to his fellow royal relatives.

“We couldn’t be happier to see little Princess Charlotte wearing the same cardigan Prince George once wore,” the brand’s designer, Ana Pérez, told People. “It is a huge pleasure to be among the brands in their wardrobe.”

But that’s not all: As it turns out, 4-week-old Prince Louis is also wearing a hand-me down from Charlotte in his solo shot that Kate photographed.

The white jumper he’s wearing is the same one Princess Charlotte wore in her own official photograph with Prince George in June 2015.

Adorable, no? We love a royal re-wear, and this definitely takes the cake.

Prince Louis' Birth Certificate Is Pretty Standard, Minus Two Small Details


If you thought royal birth certificates are fancier than others—like, say, hand-printed in gold ink on ivory card stock—think again. Turns out, when royals are born, they’re issued a routine birth certificate, just like the rest of us. Well, almost.

On Tuesday (May 1), Prince Louis’ birth certificate was released, and it’s pretty standard save for two small details. Under “occupation” for his mom and dad—Kate Middleton and Prince William—it reads “Princess of the United Kingdom” and “Prince of the United Kingdom.” And for “name and surname,” all three royals are listed under their full royal titles. This means Prince Louis is listed as “His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge,” Prince William goes by “His Royal Highness Prince William Arthur Philip Louis Duke of Cambridge,” and Kate Middleton is ID’d as “Catherine Elizabeth Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge.”

Other than that, though, the birth certificate has all your basic info. It states that Prince Louis was born on April 23, 2018, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Westminster, that his sex is male, and that he lives at Kensington Palace in London. It also bears Prince William’s signature, which is exactly as aristocratic as you’d expect.

Kensington Palace announced the then-unnamed Prince Louis’ birth last Monday, April 23 on Twitter. “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs,” read the tweet. “The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

Later that week, Prince William joked that he was still “working on” the baby name, but a day later, Kensington Palace confirmed it: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son Louis Arthur Charles,” read their announcement. Now it’s official, so no take-backs, William.
