Lady Gaga Just Spoke Out About That Text She Sent Kesha Calling Katy Perry 'Mean'

Earlier this year news broke that Lady Gaga and Kesha privately texted about the latter’s legal situation with music producer Dr. Luke. If you’re unfamiliar, Kesha sued Dr. Luke for emotional and physical abuse in 2014. The situation put Kesha’s music career in limbo, and in April 2016 a judge dismissed several of the claims she made against him. On Friday (November 30), the text exchange between Gaga and Kesha became public, and in it they discuss another singer who’s worked with Dr. Luke: Katy Perry.

In Perry’s deposition for the Kesha-Dr. Luke case, she denies being sexually assaulted by Dr. Luke—an accusation that’s been floating around for a while now. Kesha and Gaga discuss this specifically in their texts. “She [Perry] is probably really afraid to lose everything,” Gaga wrote to Kesha via text, according to Us Weekly. “U are really strong standing up to him [Dr. Luke], she’s not as strong as u yet.”

“your [sic] right. I need to find sympathy and empathy for her,” Kesha replied to Gaga before calling Perry “so mean.”

Gaga echoed Kesha’s sentiments, writing back, “Do u want me to see if I can talk to her. I know she’s mean. … She makes me angry about s–t [but] I just try to have empathy for her.”

These texts, for obvious reasons, quickly went viral on the Internet. However, Gaga took to Twitter on Friday afternoon and set the record straight. She says there’s no bad blood between herself and Perry, and that the texts released from the deposition are old.

“.@katyperry & I have grown up in the industry together,” Gaga tweeted. “We’ve gone through both celebrations & differences w/ each other. These are old texts. We’ve matured, gotten over the past, love each other & share deep respect. Katy is my friend and is truly a kind soul. End of story.”

Perry returned the affection. “Love you too friend ❤️ Onward and upward,” she wrote.

Hopefully, this ends any squabbling within the Katy and Gaga fan communities.

Kesha Just Opened Up About What Her Powerful Song 'Praying' Means to Her

We can discuss our outrage about Grammy snubs all day (this author is looking at Harry Styles), but as the evening draws closer, the excitement over who will be performing is real. After all, the Grammy Awards ceremony has a history of epic, memorable performances—just watch Michael Jackson’s 1988 performance for yourself. This year, none other than Kesha is set to take the stage Sunday night. She’s expected to sing her Grammy-nominated song “Praying”, one she wrote amid legal battles with her ex-producer Dr. Luke, whom she accused of emotionally and physically abusing her in 2014.

As #MeToo and Time’s Up gain traction, the Grammy Awards this year have even more meaning, and nominees and presenters are expected to wear white roses in solidarity for the latter movement. Ahead of the New York City based ceremony, Kesha took to her Twitter account to tell her fans what singing the song really means to her.

“When i wrote praying, with ben abraham and ryan lewis, i just felt as if i had gotten a huge weight off of my shoulders,” she wrote alongside a picture of Madison Square Garden. “it felt like an emotional raw victory for myself, one step closer to healing. I never could have known what would’ve happened these past few years.”

She continued the thread with another tweet: “i just want to say that i needed this song in a very real way, im so proud and nervous and overwhelmed to be performing it at the grammys on sunday, and if you need it i hope this song finds you. ”

Kesha Just Got the Most Powerful Message Tattooed on Her Fingers

Kesha’s latest powerful message isn’t in her lyrics: it’s on her fingers. The singer just revealed on Instagram that her newest tattoo is the words “LIVE FREE” spelled out across her fingers—a gesture that’s at once beautiful and badass for some intensely personal reasons.

As you’re probably aware, for the last few years Kesha’s been fighting various legal battles with mega-producer Dr. Luke, whom she accused of sexual assault and who is now countersuing her for making the allegation. In her original suit against him, she was also trying to get out of her contract, which stipulates that she can only produce new music with him and with Sony.

In the midst of all that, Kesha also entered rehab for an eating disorder, which is where her new album, Rainbow, started to take shape. As she wrote in a heartfelt essay for Refinery29: “Since those difficult and emotional days in rehab, I started imagining that one day I would put out a new record, and I would call it Rainbow. For a long time, I didn’t know if that idea was just a fantasy, a ghost to keep me waking up and actually getting out of my bed, or if it could actually come true. But I just held onto that idea because it was all I had…I know that this album saved my life.”

The legal situation with Kesha, record label Sony, and Dr. Luke is still complicated, and Dr. Luke’s countersuit continues, but Kesha was able to release Rainbow, and it’s reflective of the harrowing journey she’s gone through. In her first single, “Praying,” she prays for the absolution of those who have hurt her; in “Woman,” she finds power—and, yes, fun—in her gender.

If “live free” is her new motto, it makes total sense—and she’ll have a reminder every time she looks at her hands. As she wrote on Instagram, “funny how words take on such important meaning once you start living and find yourself looking for the perfect letters to make up the perfect word to make up the perfect feeling…..”
