‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Reportedly Kept Alex Karev Alive for One Simple Reason

Warning: Grey’s Anatomy spoilers ahead.

If you’re one of those Grey’s Anatomy fans who flip-flopped from fearing the writers would kill off Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) to wishing they had after finding out his fate, listen up.

According to a source that spoke with Us Weekly, there’s a very simple reason the Grey’s Anatomy writers sent Evil Spawn off to live on a farm with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) and their two kids after Justin Chambers announced his exit in the middle of season 16.

“The reason he wasn’t killed off is because Shonda Rhimes is leaving the door open for a return, in any capacity, if he wants to come back,” an alleged insider told the publication. (If you’re wondering why they mention Rhimes, who is no longer the showrunner of the long-running series, it’s because she still has approval privileges as the executive producer.)

Though Chambers announced in his statement from January that Grey’s had already aired his final scenes, they were ultimately able to get him to loan his voice-over to the farewell episode.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff expressed her appreciation for the actor and character in a recent statement. “We have loved writing Alex. And we have loved watching Justin Chambers’ nuanced portrayal of him,” she tweeted. “For 16 seasons, 16 years, we have grown up alongside Alex Karev. We have been frustrated by his limitations and we have been inspired by his growth and we have come to love him deeply and to think of him as one of our very best friends. We will miss him terribly. And we will always be grateful for his impact, on our show, on our hearts, on our fans, on the world.”

Though Camilla Luddington, who plays Karev’s soon-to-be-ex-wife Jo on the series, has yet to release an official statement, costar Ellen Pompeo (the titular Meredith Grey) called the exit the “best possible storyline” before reuniting with former castmate T.R. Knight.

Whether or not the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital (or the fans) would be happy to see Karev again after all this remains to be seen….

Ellen Pompeo Defends Alex Karev's Controversial Goodbye on Grey’s Anatomy

Warning: Major Grey’s Anatomy spoilers ahead.

Attention, Grey’s Anatomy fans: Ellen Pompeo has weighed in on the show’s controversial farewell to Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and she says hard pass to fans who wish the writers would’ve killed him off instead of sending him to live with Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl).

In last night’s episode, Alex sent letters to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), his new wife, Jo (Camilla Luddington), and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) explaining that his ex from over 10 years ago had his babies and that he’s going to make a life with them. Many fans were against it, but Pompeo called it the “the best possible storyline” in a new Instagram post.

“Hi here I go again … Thank YOU! You are truly the best most passionate most loyal fans anyone could ever ask for,” she wrote. “Because of you we got to make great tv… because of you we got to make television history!”

Pompeo goes on to thank the writers “for giving Alex Karev the best send off” and calls him “the most amazing character.”

“For me personally for Karev to go back to the beginning…was the best possible storyline,” she continues. “It pays homage to those incredible first years and the incredible cast…that created a foundation so strong that the show is still standing. So let’s not be sad. As our fearless leader DA always says let’s PULL UP and celebrate the actors the writers and the fantastic crew who make this show come to life every week. No matter what the challenge or how tired we all are in the end…you keep us going…That is worth dancing it out over! So much love and gratitude to you all. Xo E.”

In January, Chambers announced his exit from Grey’s Anatomy. “There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” he said in a statement. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”

He added, “As I move on from Grey’s Anatomy, I want to thank the ABC family, Shonda Rimes, original cast members Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens, and the rest of the amazing cast and crew, both past and present, and, of course, the fans for an extraordinary ride.”

Fans Are Scared ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Is Going to Kill Off Alex Karev

Grey’s Anatomy fans were shocked last week when it was announced that Justin Chambers, who has played Alex Karev since the show debuted in 2005, would be leaving the show—and that his final episode has actually already aired.

“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” the actor told Deadline. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”

Since Karev’s departure happened offscreen, fans are now afraid that he’s going to be killed off, à la
Patrick Dempsey‘s Derek Shepherd. Though
I don’t think that’s actually what will happen, you never know with this show. “I swear if Shonda makes Alex Karev die tragically with a version of Chasing Cars or some other depressing song playing in the background… I’m going to lose it,” one person tweeted.

“Bro if this bar car crash episode is Justin Chambers last episode and it’s just gonna be Meredith, did Alex die is the car crash? bro ima fight every writer in the room if this is how y’all end Alex Karev storyyyyy ?,” another wrote.

Seriously, the car crash cliff-hanger from the midseason finale has people concerned. A third fan wrote, “SHONDA YOU BETTER NOT MAKE THAT ALEX KAREV CAR THAT CRASHED INTO THE SIDE OF THAT DAMN BAR WHILE GOING TO VISIT HIS MOM AND HAVE HIM DIE ON IMPACT I WILL FIGHT YOUUUUU WHO WILL MEREDITH HAVE NOW???!!!!”

Karev is, of course, not the first character to leave on Grey’s Anatomy. Along with Derek, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has said goodbye to George, her sister Lexie, Mark Sloane, her mom, and her dad—just to name a few characters who’ve died. Meanwhile, Christina Yang moved to Europe and who the heck knows where Izzie (Katherine Heigl) is these days.

Ugh, the heart can take only so much. Let’s hope Karev is left alive so he can return some day.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Just Got Renewed for Two More Seasons

TGIT lovers, rejoice: Grey’s Anatomy just got renewed for two more seasons, Deadline confirmed on Friday, May 10. This makes the hit ABC series the longest-running medical drama in TV history, edging out ER, which previously held that title.

The fate of Grey’s Anatomy has been up in the air for a while. In September 2018, Ellen Pompeo worried fans when she told Entertainment Weekly she was “looking for a change.” “I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any kind of formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories we can tell,” she said at the time. “It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change.”

But it looks like Grey’s Anatomy is offering Pompeo enough variety to keep her on board for at least two more seasons. She made history last year when it was announced she inked a $20 million deal for the 15th and 16th seasons of Grey’s—making her the highest-paid actress on dramatic television.

Pompeo revealed to Entertainment Tonight in May 2018 that she “caught a little flak in certain areas ” for talking about her salary. Even still, she has no regrets.

“The thing that’s been more meaningful is the women who have found it empowering and helpful,” Pompeo told ET. “I can’t tell you the amount of women who have approached me and just want to hug me and thank me for the audacity to be bold and maybe even a little crass, but authentic and explain my journey and my shortcomings, as well as my successes—has made it all worthwhile.”

“I’m 48 now, so I’ve finally gotten to the place where I’m OK asking for what I deserve, which is something that comes only with age,” she explained to The Hollywood Reporter about originally finalizing the deal. “It’s my show; I’m the number one.”

Chandra Wilson on Directing a Historic ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Episode

On Thursday, February 28, Grey’s Anatomy will air its 332nd episode, officially making it the longest-running medical drama in TV history. It’s hard to imagine a world without this show, especially now that it’s in its fifteenth season. After all, four of its current characters—Meredith Grey, Miranda Bailey, Richard Weber, and Alex Karev—have been with us since the very beginning. You’ve probably know them longer than some of your friends.

It’s truly fitting, then, that one of those four—Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey)—is directing this historic episode. She describes the process of preparing for this week’s show as “exciting and scary,” given its significance. “It’s the silly pressure you put on yourself,” she tells Glamour. “But this was my twentieth episode of Grey’s that I’ve directed, so I must be doing OK.”

So what can viewers expect? “I had all of my ideas about things that I thought [were] important and that the audience might want to see and what would be a treat. But then my writers and my producers had another idea for what they thought it was about,” she says. “And we came up with something that I think, for the audience, is gonna say, ‘Guess what guys? We continue. There’s more to come. Nothing is over. Nothing is ended.'”

Wilson says longtime fans of the show should keep their eyes peeled for special details that may or may not call back to Grey’s history. “I know it was important to me to plant some [Easter eggs] because I think those things are so much fun for fans,” she says. I personally have my fingers crossed for a classic Bailey monologue, though my ultimate dream would be a Cristina Yang appearance, which probably won’t happen. Maybe Bailey will just say her name—that should tide us over until Killing Eve season two premieres in April.

One of the greatest things about a show’s staying on the air as long as Grey’s in the era of streaming is it has created a whole new generation of fans. “I had a young girl [around 20 years old] tell me, ‘My roommates and I watch [together].’ And that’s what happened at the beginning of our show: People would talk to us about getting together with their roommates or getting together with their family,” Wilson says. “And it’s a show that people don’t watch by themselves. They usually pull somebody else in with them. And I think that’s definitely what gives us our longevity.”

She continues, “We’re like a group effort. We’re an ensemble show, and people watch it as an ensemble and they are so invested in what happens to these characters. So whether it’s the OGs or whether it’s our new characters that come in, even if they don’t want to like somebody, they still stick around and say, ‘OK, but you know? Let me see. Let me see.'”

So does an OG like Wilson have a favorite Grey’s Anatomy moment? She loves the episodes in season six when a shooter is roaming the hospital and Dr. Bailey is trapped in a room with a patient (played by Mandy Moore). Her number-one favorite, though, is the pilot. “That’s the one that really established what this show was going to be, who these characters were,” she says. “And if I ever get confused about how I think Bailey should respond to something, I always think about that pilot and who she thought she was in the pilot—because that’s who she still thinks she is.”

Tune into Wilson’s episode of Grey’s tonight at 8:00 P.M. ET on ABC.
