All the Beauty Secrets Behind 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood'

Between classic sports cars and go-go boots, there’s a lot of eye candy in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. But Quentin Tarantino’s love letter to the L.A. of his youth also perfectly encapsulates an incredibly polarizing time in American history, when the ’50s and its mainstream values started to give way to a youth-lead counterculture.

This tension is embodied, in part, by relative old timer Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), an actor who has built a rugged onscreen image, but who is made utterly fragile by the threat of the new guard. He sheds tears over his fading relevance, seems unnerved at the sight of hippies, and is scared to retire his trademark pompadour. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie floats through the film as the fearless Sharon Tate, with confidence and ease to spare. Tate dances like no one’s watching while on Pan Am planes and at the Playboy mansion, picks up hitchhikers and self-advocates for recognition (and a free movie ticket) at a theater playing her film.

“She wasn’t terrified of being a modern woman at all,” says the film’s hair department head, Janine Thompson. The same can be said of the girls of the Manson Family who run Spawn Ranch, who flexed their confidence with a dusted-up look that said they wanted no part of traditional beauty standards. Sure, the film is a buddy movie between Rick and his sidekick, Cliff (Brad Pitt). But it’s also a sharp look at old-school American culture (represented by Dalton and his ilk) being made passé by a new wave of thinkers, dreamers, and fighters (as shown by Tate and the Manson girls). If anything, the film shows the future is female—and much of it is reinforced through beauty looks.

To get in on the hair and makeup secrets behind 1969 Los Angeles’s sun-drenched sea change, Glamour talked with Thompson and the film’s makeup department head, Heba Thorisdottir. Ahead, see how characters’ hairstyle and makeup choices help enunciate the clash between mainstream American culture that felt stuck in the fifties (embodied by Dalton) and a rising counterculture that targets Tate and the Manson family girls as the society’s next influencers.

Sharon Tate’s New-School Beauty

ANDREW COOPER

“Sharon was very fashion forward,” says Thorisdottir. “In 1969, because of her pregnancy and because she had spent a lot of time in England, she was moving toward what we think of as new bohemian.” Sure, her hippie-leaning look is a stark contrast to the buttoned-up Old Hollywood stars, but even more, it’s the new technology it required that shows how progressive the actress really was.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale 2019: Here’s How to Get Free Beauty Products

The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is here—and if you’re a Nordstrom card member, it’s already been here, with Early Access deals that started July 12. Luckily, all the good deals haven’t been nabbed up just yet—there’s more than enough going on in the beauty department. Cases in point: incredible deals on beauty names like Nars, Kiehl’s, Le Labo, and Trish McEvoy. But if there’s one thing better than the words on sale, it’s the word free, and there are plenty of great ways to score some free beauty products during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Yes, you read that right.

We’re talking about gifts with purchase, the old staple of tempting beauty discounts. But this isn’t your usual makeup-bag-with-purchase situation. Instead, the gifts with purchase at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale are actually good. An eight-piece Kiehl’s skin-care set with a $125 purchase? Done. Not all of the freebies are going to be full-size products, but there are a ton of beauty products that (a) expire so quickly that a full-size product almost isn’t even worth it (hello, all mascaras), or (b) you use so little of that a sample-size product can actually last you a heck of a long time (e.g., serums, eye cream). It’s perfect for testing out a new product to see whether it’s worth shelling out for a full-size product—or just adding to your gym bag.

Here are some of the best gifts with purchase going on—and our fave picks for how to score them. (Just keep in mind some are for online purchases only.) Be quick: Once everyone’s in on the secret, supplies are sure to go quickly.

Lady Gaga’s New Beauty Line Is Already an Amazon Best-Seller

Hundreds of thousands of people spent at least part of their Monday or Tuesday on Amazon during the company’s longest-ever Prime Day sale, and while they weren’t all in the market for Lady Gaga’s new makeup line, Haus Laboratories, a pretty impressive number of shoppers were. Even surrounded by the pandemonium of record-breaking markdowns, the highly anticipated debut of Haus Laboratories was also highly successful.

Yahoo! Lifestyle reports that Haus Laboratories’ did quite well on Amazon Prime Day—well enough to be considered a best-seller among deeply discounted products by other beauty brands. In fact, Haus received enough preorders from Prime members to temporarily push it into Monday’s overall top-10 best sellers.

As for which Haus Laboratories products were preordered the most, people were especially excited to stake their claim on the three-piece All-Over Color, Lip Gloss and Lip Liner, which comes in six different color combinations; the Le Riot Lip Gloss Duo, which comes in three different pairs; and the RIP Lip Liner Duo, which also comes in three color combos. For the majority of this week, both the Le Riot Lip Gloss Duo and the RIP Lip Liner Duo were the top sellers in their Amazon categories.

The RIP Lip Liner Duo is an especially great pick, thanks to its versatility. According to Gaga’s makeup artist and Haus Laboratories global artistry director, Sarah Tanno, the pop icon likes to line her lips with these pencils and also fill them in entirely. Referring to the shade Ride (which comes in the Floor It duo with En Pointe), Tanno wrote on Instagram, “@ladygaga loves to wear it all over her lips like a lipstick. Full coverage, super creamy formula ?.”

Whether you already placed your order or you’re planning to, being a Prime member won’t get you two-day shipping this time—more like two-month shipping. The preorders placed now are not expected to ship until September 17, when Haus Laboratories officially launches.

Everything We Know About Haus Laboratories, Lady Gaga’s Beauty Line

“The last thing the world needs is another beauty brand, but that’s too bad,” says Lady Gaga in a video posted today on her Instagram account, announcing the long-awaited drop of her makeup line, Haus Laboratories. “They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But at Haus Laboratories, we say beauty is how you see yourself.” The video features the superstar dancing with a crowd of downtown-cool models of various gender expressions wearing metallic makeup looks.

Rumors about Gaga’s line have been swirling for months—the latest being leaked photos over the weekend that indicate visuals may or may not be Photoshop-free—but today Little Monsters are finally getting some answers. In addition to the campaign video, Gaga revealed to Business of Fashion that her line would be called Haus Laboratories, not Haus Beauty, as many fans had suspected.

Fans will be able to get the line with two-day shipping, as it will be the first major beauty brand to launch exclusively on Amazon, which Gaga credits with giving her full creative control. The products will also be available on Haus Labs’ own website when the line launches in September.

We have limited details on the products themselves, but from the video we’re guessing there will be glitter involved. There are definitely lip glosses, which will retail for $16, lip colors, and allover colors in six shades according to Business of Fashion. Kits of all three products will be available for $49, and all the products will be available for preorder starting on Amazon Prime Day, July 15.

While we might still be guessing when it comes to actual product, Gaga’s messaging is extremely clear: This is not your typical beauty line, this is about self expression. “I have a platform in the world,” she told Business of Fashion. “God gave me this voice for a reason, I don’t know why, I ask myself that question all the time, but I’m sure as hell not going to put out a beauty brand that is going to drive insecurity and fear into people. This is about liberation.”
