How to Clean White Sneakers the Right Way

Some things just look better when they’re broken in—a leather jacket, the perfect 501s, a killer pair of boots—while others, honestly, don’t. Which is why the appeal of white sneakers is categorically undeniable. Also undeniable: The fact that your pristine Stan Smiths, your investment Yeezy Powerphases, and your beloved Converse will, without question, get downright grimy. Googling “how to clean white sneakers” might be an exercise in futility, though, given the confusing amount of tips, tricks, and hacks people (and Pinterest) swear by. But now, thanks to one simple tweet, the ideal solution appears to have been found. And there are pics to prove it.

When, a few years ago, Twitter user @sarahtraceyy sent out side-by-side photos of her Converse sneakers caked in grime alongside a seemingly new, stark-white pair (with the caption “I am a miracle worker”), let’s just say people were floored. “God obviously saw me googling how to clean white shoes today and sent this tweet my way,” one commenter wrote, with another asking “OMG, what kind of witchcraft.”

Turns out, it’s not witchcraft at all, but a precise mix of stuff you probably have at home right now. In another tweet, this self-proclaimed miracle worker bestowed upon the Web her recipe for the fresh sneakers: “ok rinse shoes, mix 1:1.5 of baking soda & detergent, scrub w toothbrush, let it sit for a while, rinse, put in washer, baby powder/dry?”

The hack has been retweeted more than 94,000 times, with a curious public wanting more details. (“Any special kind of detergent?” someone asked. “Nope! I just used one with like extra stain remover,” @saratraceyy replied, before clarifying to another user that she’s talking about laundry detergent, not dish soap.)

So, there you have it. The ultimate (and Twitter-approved) “how to clean white sneakers” hack for you to try out when you’ve worn your Cons one too many times. But, if you’re still itching to replace your tired pair, here are five fresh canvas sneakers to dirty up this summer.

Of Course Melania Trump’s White House Birthday Card Is Becoming a Meme

It’s Melania Trump‘s birthday, and the White House decided to celebrate by posting a photo of her on social media. “Happy Birthday, @FLOTUS,” the White House wrote on its official Instagram and Twitter pages.

But of course the Internet couldn’t let well enough alone. People on Twitter immediately started turning the photo WH chose into memes. After all, the pic was an interesting choice. It’s of Trump sitting on the far end of a couch, alone, as dozens of paparazzi take her picture. There wasn’t a cute headshot the White House could have posted? A candid? Just this couch photo?

Check it for yourself below. I’m not surprised the memes are rolling in.

Here are just a few (very funny) examples.

This isn’t the first time Melania Trump has been at the center of a White House meme. Remember over the holidays, when people were freaking out over the red Christmas trees the Trumps picked as decorations? Those memes still slay me, TBH.

According to People, Donald Trump said last year he didn’t get a big birthday present for Melania because he was too busy.

“Well, I better not get into that because I may get in trouble,” the President said on Fox & Friends, per People. “Maybe I didn’t get her so much. I tell you what, she has done—I got her a beautiful card. You know, I’m very busy to be running out looking for presents, OK! But I got her a beautiful card and some beautiful flowers.” He did, however, give Melania a shout-out in an email campaign. “Melania is my rock and foundation, and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without her by my side,” he wrote at the time last year.

This is Melania Trump’s third birthday in the White House as FLOTUS.

Best White Sandals 2019

It didn’t take long for the sandal for 2019 to reveal itself. You’ve probably seen that one strappy, white, barely-there pair—maybe not IRL, but definitely on Instagram. The reason it’s suddenly so ubiquitous? Well, it’s from Zara.

The fast-fashion brand has gone ahead and done it again, creating an “it” item that’s accessible, but still feels on-trend. Only a few weeks into spring, this sandal has already become a sort of inside-joke among the fashion crowd, because it really feels like everyone’s wearing it.

Zara might’ve made one version of it, but this minimalist sandal style isn’t exactly unique to the brand. Like most truly great trends, it really went mainstream thanks to Phoebe Philo’s Céline. Her Resort 2018 collection for the label featured warm-weather footwear with straps so thin, they were almost undetectable. The Row then released its own take, a pair of simple slingbacks that were also excellent. Fast-forward to present day, and it feels like all of your friends have a version of it in their closet.

If you don’t want to sit out the biggest sandal trend of the season but also don’t want to look like everyone else who’s excited to finally be wearing anything but boots, there are plenty of alternatives to the Zara ones that feel just different enough—and that appeal to different budgets. From Rejina Pyo’s Doris sandal on the high end to Charles & Keith’s under $50 asymmetrical version, here are the best white sandals to buy this spring.

There are few wardrobe essentials that we lean on more than the white shirt. It’s the real deal—a true wear-anywhere closet staple that looks just as good with your work trousers as it does with your weekend denim.

Whether yours is made from crisp cotton or soft silk, the tailored shape of a button-down makes any outfit feel instantly elegant. You can pair it with trousers and a blazer and head into work. You can tuck it into jeans, slip on sneakers, and go about tackling your weekend to-do list. Tie it up, cuff the sleeves—no matter your preferred styling or the time of year, you really can’t go wrong with a white shirt. So ahead, we’re breaking down nine foolproof outfits centered around this beloved fashion item. Read on for ideas on how to wear a white shirt for work, date night, or weekend.

For Work

Button up a crisp white button-down all the way up and tuck it into a pleated midi skirt. Slip into a pair of heeled boots to stay chic and comfortable all day long.

Roll up the sleeves of a blazer and let those of your white-button down hang longer for a cooler take on this 9-to-5 formula.

On casual Fridays, when you can break out the short suit, your trusty white button-down will always look good.

For a Date

Take the classic blouse-and-trouser work formula straight into date night by playing around with the neckline. Pull the top up and open it up around the shoulders, to show a little bit more skin in that area.

Go the Meghan Markle route and style a white shirt underneath a blazer dress for a look that’s polished but playful.

If you have evening plans, find a white shirt that’s cropped or has some sort of cinched-waist detail, to wear with skinny-fit jeans.

When in doubt, go for the tried-and-true blue denim and white cotton shirt. Style the look with everything from flats to statement heels, depending on where you’re headed.

Kate Middleton Wore a Stunning White Floral Gown to the BAFTAs

Of all the red-carpet appearances celebrities make throughout the year, there’s none quite like a Kate Middleton red-carpet appearance, because like Valentine’s Day, it comes but once a year. Unlike Valentine’s Day, it’s something everyone can get excited about. The Duchess of Cambridge traditionally turns out for the BAFTAs, the Oscars/Emmys of Great Britain, and if you thought her looks for her schedule of royal engagements were good, let’s just say she really kicks it up a notch for this black-tie awards ceremony. This year, the BAFTAs were held on Sunday (February 10), and it’s safe to say that Middleton cast off her current title to show up looking like an incredibly regal snow queen.

Middleton, who showed up last to the red carpet with Prince William on her arm, wore a gorgeous white ballgown reportedly from one of her go-to designers, Alexander McQueen (the house seems to have a thing for making gorgeous white dresses for her). The bodice featured a delicate pleating effect that swept up into beautifully layered floral embellishments on its single-shoulder strap and ended with an ultra-floaty hem that blossomed out like the edges of a flower petal as she walked. She capped off the look with a pair of Princess Diana’s sparkly, drop-pearl earrings and what looks like a diamond bracelet.

Middleton also wore a little more eye makeup than she usually does: She went for a shimmering smoky eye with a spring-ready hint of pink between the lid and brow highlight. The look was finished with a rosy pink lip and swipe of blush.

And yeah, Prince William looks pretty good in his tux, too.
