Taylor Swift Just Spilled So Many Details About Her Feud With Kanye West


Taylor Swift‘s feud with Kanye West has been well-documented over the years, starting with that infamous speech interruption from the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. The latest chapter of this saga happened in 2016, when West included a lyric about Swift in his song “Famous,” calling her “that bitch.” Swift took issue with that specific phrase, but West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, contested the “Lover” singer actually approved the track. She leaked a phone conversation between West and Swift on Snapchat to prove her point, but it didn’t really work. The footage shows the two artists talking about the song, yes, but not the lyric Swift didn’t like. There’s been tension ever since.

Swift hasn’t really given her side of this story, until now. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, she spilled some tea about the feud seen round the world. She told the magazine that “the world didn’t understand the context and the events that led up to” the Snapchat incident. Here’s what she said, in full:

“Some events took place to cause me to be pissed off when he called me a bitch. That was not just a singular event. Basically, I got really sick of the dynamic between he and I. And that wasn’t just based on what happened on that phone call and with that song—it was kind of a chain reaction of things.

“I started to feel like we reconnected, which felt great for me—because all I ever wanted my whole career after that thing happened in 2009 was for him to respect me. When someone doesn’t respect you so loudly and says you literally don’t deserve to be here—I just so badly wanted that respect from him, and I hate that about myself, that I was like, ‘This guy who’s antagonizing me, I just want his approval.’ But that’s where I was. And so we’d go to dinner and stuff. And I was so happy, because he would say really nice things about my music. It just felt like I was healing some childhood rejection or something from when I was 19.

“But the 2015 VMAs come around. He’s getting the Vanguard Award. He called me up beforehand—I didn’t illegally record it, so I can’t play it for you. But he called me up, maybe a week or so before the event, and we had maybe over an hourlong conversation, and he’s like, ‘I really, really would like for you to present this Vanguard Award to me, this would mean so much to me,’ and went into all the reasons why it means so much, because he can be so sweet. He can be the sweetest. And I was so stoked that he asked me that. And so I wrote this speech up, and then we get to the VMAs and I make this speech and he screams, ‘MTV got Taylor Swift up here to present me this award for ratings!’ [Editor’s note: Rolling Stone clarified his exact words were “You know how many times they announced Taylor was going to give me the award ’cause it got them more ratings?”] And I’m standing in the audience with my arm around his wife, and this chill ran through my body. I realized he is so two-faced. That he wants to be nice to me behind the scenes, but then he wants to look cool, get up in front of everyone, and talk shit. And I was so upset.

“He wanted me to come talk to him after the event in his dressing room. I wouldn’t go. So then he sent this big, big thing of flowers the next day to apologize. And I was like, ‘You know what? I really don’t want us to be on bad terms again. So whatever, I’m just going to move past this.’ So when he gets on the phone with me, and I was so touched that he would be respectful and, like, tell me about this one line in the song.”

Demi Lovato Just Proved There's No Bad Blood Between Her and Taylor Swift


It’s not exactly surprising news, unfortunately, when two female pop stars are publicly pitted against each other. That’s pretty much a tale as old as time—and recently, both Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato have been on the receiving end of all sorts of speculation about their working relationships with other women in their field, including each other.

While rumors of a full-on feud might have been overblown, it’s been fairly clear that the two have not necessarily been buddy-buddy in recent years. Back in 2016, Lovato appeared to throw some shade at Swift in an interview with Glamour: “Don’t brand yourself a feminist if you don’t do the work,” she said at the time.

“To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body,” she continued. “It’s kind of this false image of what people should look like. And what they should be like, and it’s not real.”

Then there was the Scooter Braun drama, where he purchased the masters to Swift’s earlier recordings. Swift was furious, but Lovato (a Braun client) defended him. More recently, fans thought Lovato was referencing Swift as the “reason” she didn’t attend the 2019 VMAs, which Swift opened. But the singer quickly shut that down on Twitter: “Btw.. I didn’t ‘shade’ anyone last night. My REASON for not going is because I’m literally living my dream being on Will & Grace rn so stop reaching thaaaaannnnkkssss.” (Lovato will appear in the final season of the NBC show’s reboot.)

But now, the two superstars are showing each other some genuine support with a couple Instagram shout-outs—and we’re here for it.

Lovato took to her Instagram Stories to praise the song “Cruel Summer” from Swift’s latest album, Lover. “Life’s too short for women not to support other women…especially when women release great music,” she continued. “Great job @taylorswift.”

Demi Lovato Just Responded to Claims She Shaded Taylor Swift by Skipping the VMAs


Demi Lovato was noticeably absent from the MTV VMAs on Monday, August 26, and when she wrote on Instagram that she skipped the awards ceremony “for a reason,” speculation began almost immediately. People started wondering if the message was a subtle dig at Taylor Swift, who opened the show and went on to win three awards. But Lovato stopped the rumor mill in its tracks with a follow-up story that instructed everyone to “stop reaching.”

Lovato revealed this morning that she was a no-show at the ceremony because she nabbed an exciting role on the final season of Will & Grace. After sharing the news, she was quick to dispel accusations that her original comment was directed at Swift. “Btw.. I didn’t ‘shade’ anyone last night. My REASON for not going is because I’m literally living my dream being on Will & Grace rn so stop reaching thaaaaannnnkkssss,” she wrote in one of her stories.

Fans may have started jumping to conclusions because Swift and Lovato do have somewhat of a fraught relationship. In 2016, Lovato seemingly knocked Swift’s early brand of feminism to Glamour, saying, “Don’t brand yourself a feminist if you don’t do the work.”

Lovato continued in that same interview, “To be honest, and this will probably get me in trouble, I don’t see anybody in any sort of squad that has a normal body. Things seemed to get tense again when the whole Swift-Scooter Braun drama went down earlier this summer. Lovato, who is Braun’s client, said on social media, ““I have dealt with bad people in the industry and Scooter is not one of them. He’s a good man.”

Still, despite what their past issues have been, Demi Lovato doesn’t want words put in her mouth. It sounds like she wants to spend her time celebrating her Will & Grace moment instead of entertaining gossip.

Taylor Swift Gets Candid About Politics, Privilege, and How the Pop Industry Can Feel Like 'The Hunger Games'


Taylor Swift sat down with the Guardian for her first major U.K. interview in years, and over the course of the conversation, she opened up about pretty much everything fans have wanted to ask her over the last several years. Swift went into detail about her political views and why it took her so long to speak out about them; she explained why she’s been so protective of her relationship with actor Joe Alwyn; and she even shared her thoughts on the pop music industry and how it can feel like The Hunger Games sometimes.

During the interview, Swift focuses a lot on 2016—a rough year for her, during which she had some public feuds with Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, and Kanye West and Kim Kardashian. She had previously said in interviews that “an artist fails when they lose their self-awareness,” and she’s asked if she feels she’d made the same mistake during her career.

“I definitely think that sometimes you don’t realize how you’re being perceived,” she said. “Pop music can feel like it’s The Hunger Games, and like we’re gladiators. And you can really lose focus of the fact that that’s how it feels because that’s how a lot of stan [fan] Twitter and tabloids and blogs make it seem – the overanalyzing of everything makes it feel really intense.”

Why she’s protective of her relationship with Joe Alywn:“I’ve learned that if I do [talk about the relationship], people think it’s up for discussion, and our relationship isn’t up for discussion,” she said. “If you and I were having a glass of wine right now, we’d be talking about it—but it’s just that it goes out into the world. That’s where the boundary is, and that’s where my life has become manageable. I really want to keep it feeling manageable.”

How she overcome one of her toughest years:“You can either stand there and let the wave crash into you, and you can try as hard as you can to fight something that’s more powerful and bigger than you… Or you can dive under the water, hold your breath, wait for it to pass and while you’re down there, try to learn something. Why was I in that part of the ocean? There were clearly signs that said: Rip tide! Undertow! Don’t swim! There are no lifeguards!”

“Why was I there? Why was I trusting people I trusted?” she said. “Why was I letting people into my life the way I was letting them in? What was I doing that caused this?”

What she’s learned about her own privilege:Swift said that she’s come to understand “a lot about how my privilege allowed me to not have to learn about white privilege. I didn’t know about it as a kid, and that is privilege itself, you know? And that’s something that I’m still trying to educate myself on every day. How can I see where people are coming from, and understand the pain that comes with the history of our world?”

Why she sued radio DJ David Mueller, who touched her ass at a meet-and–greet event.“Having dealt with a few of them, narcissists basically subscribe to a belief system that they should be able to do and say whatever the hell they want, whenever the hell they want to,” she said. “And if we—as anyone else in the world, but specifically women—react to that, well, we’re not allowed to. We’re not allowed to have a reaction to their actions.”

Taylor Swift Says She's 'Obviously' Pro-Choice


Now that Taylor Swift has spoken out about her political beliefs—like urging people to register to vote and endorsing progressive candidates, for example—it doesn’t look like she’ll be pulling back. In fact in a new interview with The Guardian, the singer doubles down—voicing both her unhappiness with Donald Trump’s presidency as well as the current political climate.

“We’re a democracy—at least, we’re supposed to be—where you’re allowed to disagree, dissent, debate. I really think that he thinks this is an autocracy,” she says of Trump, adding that the current atmosphere is like “gaslighting the American public into being like, ‘If you hate the president, you hate America.’”

The singer was famously mum during the 2016 election—an action, or rather lack of action, that received much criticism at the time. But according to The Guardian, she started feeling conflicted about the United States political climate after, she says, “all the dirtiest tricks in the book were used and it worked.” That was a tumultuous time for Swift: Her mother’s cancer had relapsed, and her feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian was at an all-time high after the couple posted videos on social media that they claimed proved Swift approved West’s lyrics about her in the song “Famous.” (You know the one.)

“I was just trying to protect my mental health—not read the news very much, go cast my vote, tell people to vote. I just knew what I could handle and I knew what I couldn’t. I was literally about to break,” she says. However, she adds that she now is “really remorseful” for not speaking out or endorsing Hillary Clinton for president.

Now, as the 2020 election looms closer, she tells The Guardian that she’ll “do everything” she can.

“Obviously, I’m pro-choice,” Swift adds. “I just can’t believe this is happening.”

Taylor Swift Says She's Re-Recording All Her Old Music in Light of the Scooter Braun Drama


In late June, news broke that Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, had acquired Taylor Swift’s back catalog of music as part of his purchase of Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Label Group. (Big Machine was Swift’s old label.) Pretty much everyone, from Halsey to Todrick Hall to Justin Bieber, had something to say about the situation, and voices on social media (including Kelly Clarkson) even urged her to consider the biggest power move possible: re-recording her entire catalogue.

And it turns out that’s exactly what Swift has decided to do. A short transcript from her recent appearance on CBS Sunday Morning reveals that the pop star is planning to head back to the studio and create brand new masters of all the songs that Braun now owns. Here’s exactly what she said when correspondent Tracy Smith asked her if she was going to re-record everything.

“Might you do that?” Smith asks.

“Oh yeah,” Swift says.

“That’s a plan?” Smith asks.

“Yeah, absolutely,” Swift answers.

As a recap, the whole drama started when Big Machine Records—the Scott Borchetta-owned label that Swift was on for a bulk of her career—was acquired by Braun’s company, Ithaca Holdings. In a Tumblr post, Swift insisted that she didn’t know about the sale until it was announced and that she wasn’t given the chance to buy her music. She also expressed her frustration that the songs she’d worked so hard on were now owned by someone she says had subjected her to “incessant, manipulative bullying.”

“When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter,” she wrote. “Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”

It’s unclear when Taylor Swift is going to start this project, but it’s going to be a huge undertaking. It comes right as her seventh studio album, Lover, is scheduled to drop on August 23. The full CBS interview will be out on August 25.
