Leaving Netflix in February 2019: It's Time to Say Goodbye to These 17 Movies and TV Shows


Pour one out for all your favorite childhood movies leaving Netflix in February, including Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries 2. Sadly, this is not a drill: Starting February 1, you’ll no longer have access to two of the three movies in which Anne Hathaway plays a princess. What a sad, sad world we’re about to live in. If you thought miracles happen, then you were very wrong.

And here’s some more soul-crushing news: Bride of Chucky, a masterpiece of cinema, is leaving Netflix in February, and so is Cabin Fever, all seasons of Queer as Folk, and Piranha. Not Piranha, Netflix! Anything but Piranha!

One of the most exciting titles is The Umbrella Academy, a new series starring Ellen Page, which, according to Netflix, centers on “estranged siblings with extraordinary powers [who] uncover shocking family secrets and a looming threat to humanity.” Sign us up. Other great titles coming include The Breaker Upperers, The Edge of Seventeen, and Russian Doll, which “follows a young woman named Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York City.”

Coming to Netflix in February 2019: 65 Movies and TV Shows Dropping Next Month


February might be the shortest month of the year, but Netflix is still dropping a long list of movies and TV shows throughout it. If you’re not in the mood to watch a romantic comedy come Valentine’s Day, you’ll have your pick of every movie in the Jaws franchise—which, let’s be real, is a pretty perfect scenario. The streaming giant is also releasing several original series and movies, like The Umbrella Academy, which stars Ellen Page and centers on siblings with superpowers who reunite after their father’s death.

Keep these titles in mind too: The Edge of Seventeen, Pretty in Pink, and Hairspray. All three of those movies are ideal for V-Day: cute and sentimental without being too corny. Of course, all three American Pie movies are hitting Netflix, as well, in case you want to do something completely left field.

Noah Centineo Is Starring in Another Netflix Rom-Com—With a *Riverdale* Star


If you thought 2018 was the year of the rom-com, just wait. Netflix announced on Friday (January 11) that Noah Centineo is starring in his third romantic comedy for the streaming platform—alongside, wait for it, Riverdale star Camila Mendes.

The movie is called The Perfect Date and, according to IMDB, it centers on a high school senior (Centineo) who launches a dating app wherein he becomes a stand-in boyfriend for people upon request. Laura Marano, who you probably know from Austin & Ally, also stars with Mendes and Centineo.

“Very Important Announcement Alert? @ncentineo will pretend to be your boyfriend this summer! Well, he will in the Netflix original movie The Perfect Date w/ @camimendes and @lauramarano,” Netflix posted to Instagram alongside two stills from the movie feature Mendes, Marano, and Centineo.

Marano regrammed Netflix’s post, writing, “So excited to finally talk about this!!! See you guys in the summer.”

Netflix was largely responsible for bringing back the rom-com in 2018 with its slate of summer movies, which included The Kissing Booth, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser. Centineo emerged as a breakout star from both Sierra Burgess and To All the Boys, and was quickly dubbed the Internet’s boyfriend by, well, the Internet. He’s also set to appear in the Charlie’s Angels reboot later this year, starring Kristen Stewart and directed by Elizabeth Banks.

Here’s hoping The Perfect Date is just one of many romantic comedies Netflix has in store for us this year.

People Are Just Now Discovering *You* on Netflix, and They're Flipping Out


Warning: Minor You spoilers ahead.

Last fall, Lifetime debuted an absolutely bonkers show called You. It centers on Joe (Penn Badgley, a.k.a. Dan Humphrey) a bookstore clerk who forms an unhealthy obsession with an aspiring writer named Beck (Elizabeth Lail). Well, unhealthy is a bit of an understatement: He goes full-speed Fatal Attraction on Beck, stalking her every move, manipulating her friends, and—spoiler alert—murdering people in her inner circle. If you thought Dan Humphrey was creepy on Gossip Girl, just wait until you see Joe. At least Dan didn’t awkwardly stand outside Serena’s apartment and watch her have sex with someone else. (Yup, Joe does this to Beck in first episode of You, and it’s just as wild as it sounds.)

Interestingly, though, You didn’t take off when it premiered back in September. The show’s ratings were so disappointing, in fact, that Lifetime passed it over to Netflix for season two. The streaming giant made the first season available for streaming in late December, and it’s caught on like wildfire. Better late than never, am I right?

“[You] just feels like a really great story to tell with the Netflix model. It was always built to be extremely binge-able,” You‘s co-showrunner Sera Gamble told Vulture in December.

The insanely fast rate Netflix users have consumed You‘s first season is proof of that. It feels like thousands of people have already ripped through all 10 episodes, because the memes are here—and they’re hilarious.

The Best Movies on Netflix December 2018


We’ve all been there: It’s Friday night and you’ve agreed to host a movie night, but no one can figure out what to watch. One tactic I tried when this happened to me was having all my guests write choices on slips of paper and we randomly drew from a bowl. The problem with that, though, is your friends with no taste might throw in some horrible selections—like Boogeyman II, which is what we ended up watching that night. (I learned you don’t need to see Boogeyman I to figure out the plot. It’s pretty straightforward and…awful.)
