The 13 Best Workout Leggings of 2019

Designer Adam Selman might’ve become a household name after dressing Rihanna in that now iconic bedazzled naked dress for the 2014 CFDAs, but now he’s making buzz for just about the furthest thing from glittery red carpet wear. And that would be a pair of workout leggings. To be fair, though, they aren’t your basic black leggings. Rather, Selman’s come in cheeky patterns and cuts (some are bedazzled, too) and were inspired by stars like Jane Fonda and Paris Hilton. His newly launched sassy line of workout clothing named A.S.S. (like we said, sass) garnered thousands of likes and hundreds of comments when he dropped the first look for them on Instagram. People responded with fire emojis, excessive amounts of exclamation points, and capitalized screams—and almost as swiftly, styles began selling out.

But this legging craze shouldn’t come as a surprise. We’re literally living in a time where people are wearing bike shorts with blazers and it’s considered fashun. Evidently, you don’t even have to wear workout leggings to the gym. Brands like Outdoor Voices and Lululemon started the obsession by creating pairs that weren’t only meant for athletes, but for anyone who loves rolling up to brunch in comfortable spandex or just doing things.

Since the rise of Lulu and the insane popularity of OV, other leggings brands have popped up like Girlfriend collective, whose focus is on sustainability (each pair is made of 25 recycled water bottles), or Avocado (its patterned knits—and obviously the name—are total Insta-bait). High fashion has also taken note. There’s the aforementioned Adam Selman collection, Tory Burch launched Tory Sport in 2015, and Virgil Abloh famously sent Naomi Campbell down the runway in a pair of Off-White biker shorts last September.

With stylish cuts, colors, and inclusive sizing (Girlfriend Collective goes up to size XXXL and Adam Selman Sport ranges from XXS to XXL), there’s a pair of workout leggings for anyone and everyone. Shop 13 of our favorite pairs below.

The Black Leggings I Never Hesitate to Wear As Pants

Ah, black leggings—I love to hate them. I’ve tried many in my day: different fabrics, cuts, rises… I’m a relatively active person who only wears black, so you’d think they’d be my bread and butter. But I’m also someone who cares a lot about aesthetics (hello, fashion editor), and it’s not easy to make black leggings feel special. In my book, the ultimate find would be a pair that are fitness-friendly but are also incredibly stylish, ones that, indeed, you can wear as pants. For a while, I thought this idea was too good to be true.

Then, I was introduced to époque évolution. The line was founded by two friends, who traveled together to Morocco: One noticed the other packed everything she needed—for hiking, wandering, cocktails, dinner, and everything in-between—in a single backpack, which inspired them to design clothing so versatile and no-fuss, you could fit it all into a small bag and not have to worry about it. That turned into a collection of tops, sweaters, skirts, dresses, jackets, and trousers—all made from sustainable materials—that retail for under $500. And that includes its signature Orion leggings, which come it at $98.

What instantly drew me to the Orion—other than the price—was the measured slit on either leg, right at the ankle. It reminded me of a pair of leggings that came down the Céline Fall 2016 runway that I never got my hands on, something I regret to this day. (Phoebe Philo forever.) That collection was a seminal one for the Great Leggings-As-Pants Comeback, encouraging styling people everywhere to wear their black leggings under dresses, tunics, and so on. Céline instantly made it the cool thing to do—but because I couldn’t get those black leggings, I never actually tried the trend for myself. But since then, more designers, from Paco Rabanne and Jil Sander to Off-White and Burberry, have introduced their own version of the Fashion Legging, with have made me even more eager to incorporate it into my day-to-day.

It wasn’t just the Philo-ness of the slit that I loved—it was also the material and fit on the leggings: high-waisted with a wide, no-pitch waistband that doesn’t dig in, made from a sleek 35% lycra, 65% Econyl fabric that doesn’t pill. The leggings are also water-friendly, meaning you can literally do water sports or swim in them, and the quick-drying, moisture-wicking style will hold up. Other cool things about them: They come with built-in sun protection (UPF50), and don’t sag or stretch out with wear.

When I wore the Orion leggings to the office—because, yes, I wear these to work—someone stopped to ask me if they were indeed Céline. (Is there a greater compliment you could give a fashion editor?) They’ve come with me to yoga and pilates, on dog walks and road trips, and to professional functions. I’ve worn them with Birkenstocks, sneakers, kitten heels… Any shoe, really, because the slit is great for showing off your footwear.

For me, these leggings aren’t an afterthought, or a lazy-day outfit solution—they’re my new go-to bottoms, for any and every scenario. I’ve turned two other editors onto them: Both are new moms who were looking for pants that looked chic but would also allow them to keep up with their kids. Between the three of us, we’ve really put them to the test. Our conclusion? These are truly the ultimate black leggings.

Pink Leggings: The Best Pairs to Buy Now

When I’m in my workout clothes (which is normally on the weekend, with no plans of actually working out), I don’t like to call attention to myself. I want to be comfortable. I pick loose-fitting tops and sweatshirts in muted colors, to be worn with full-coverage, high-waisted black leggings and slide sandals. I rarely deviate from that formula or palette. When it comes to activewear, I’m not one to buy into trends or experiment with silhouettes, because I know what I like. (Truly, I own around seven variations of the same plain black leggings—help.) But for the first time since the dawn of athleisure, I’ve found myself wanting to abandon this habit in favor of something much, much more…colorful.

As with most of my shopping-habit deviations, Instagram is to blame: I, a black legging devotee, am suddenly in the market for rosy pink, magenta, or cherry red athletic sets—and that’s all thanks to the countless cute pictures of strangers wearing colorful bottoms and sports bras I’ve scrolled past over the past few weeks.

Two brands in particular have piqued my interest in colorful fitness wear: Outdoor Voices and Girlfriend Collective. Both have recently released styles in this color family. And as you probably gathered, they photograph quite well.

Though these companies are the ones that have sent me on this journey out of my athleisure comfort zone, I’ve found plenty of compelling athletic bottoms in the red-pink-blush color family from a range of brands (and price points), to jazz up my existing collection. So we can consider this quest for the perfect colorful leggings a success. (Also, I’ve learned that I’m truly powerless in the face of good old-fashioned Instagram bait—I can live with that, though.)

John Legend Helping Chrissy Teigen With Her Maternity Leggings Is the Definition of True Love

If this isn’t true love, we don’t know what is: When Chrissy Teigen, who is pregnant with her second child, needed helping pulling up her maternity leggings because she was having trouble getting them over her baby bump, her husband John Legend didn’t think twice about stepping in.

Chrissy posted a video of the team effort to Snapchat; in it, you can hear a sniffling Teigen laugh, “ow…gentle!” as Legend hoists the black leggings up and over her stomach. It’s no less than what we’d expect from the couple, but it’s still pretty darn cute.

It looks like the leggings are part of Chrissy’s snow day outfit, as she also shared a snapshot of the finished product, standing (fully-dressed) in some freshly fallen snow. She’s proved to be all about that monochromatic, all-black pregnancy style this time around.

The model has been vocal in the past about her and John’s desire to expand their family, and back in September, Teigen spoke openly about how her husband helped her through her postpartum depression after she gave birth to baby Luna. “I got very, very lucky,” she said, elaborating that “Kids, friends and work are hard, but John is the easiest part of everything.” On dealing with his wife’s postpartum depression, Legend admitted that “It’s a struggle to be a good partner and help.”

But it looks like Legend has already found a pretty solid way to be supportive with baby No. 2 on the way—leggings, you’re no match for the Legends.

Lululemon In Movement Leggings Review

This is a long backstory, but bear with me: A few weeks ago, I signed up for a two-day prenatal yoga workshop that I thought would teach me how to modify yoga poses during my pregnancy. The first morning, when I arrived, I realized it was actually a prenatal yoga teacher training, and I was the guinea pig student. The master instructor had a room full of eager, hopeful new yoga teachers, and she was going to show them how to lead a prenatal yoga class by using me and one other mom-to-be as examples. The other student was well past her due date, so that “class” ended up being some swaying around, some chanting, and a lot of laying on our sides. I left a little frustrated (I like a hard workout, what can I say), so before day two I signed up for my normal Sunday yoga class for later in the day to make sure I’d get a real workout in.

But day two of the prenatal workshop was totally different. The overdue mom-to-be wasn’t there, and she was replaced by another woman was a few weeks behind me in her pregnancy. With someone a little more mobile as my co-guinea pig, we got to work. I was sweating and struggling to keep up as we flew through poses meant to test our endurance to prep us for labor. I definitely had done my work for the day. But rather than risk a cancellation fee, I dutifully went to my second yoga class that afternoon. And that is how I discovered how amazing the In Movement tights from Lululemon are.

For one thing, they’re comfortable as hell. The fabric, a new one for Lululemon called Everlux, is baby-hair soft but decidedly not see through or flimsy. The waistband comes up high (a big perk when you’re rocking a baby bump) but didn’t cut into me in any weird spots or roll down when I was moving through vinyasas. I was still happy to be wearing them when class #2 finished.

And this brings me to the most amazing thing: They. Didn’t. Smell. I sat around post-prenatal for about 6 hours before my second class, then wore them to that, then wore them to dinner. Nothing. Not a whiff. And I can tell when I’m a little funky. But even with the two-plus hours of yoga sweat, these pants did not give me away. The Lululemon website doesn’t say anything about them being smell-wicking (is that even a thing?), so I can’t totally explain it, but the site does say they “dry so fast it’s like magic,” so I can only assume the fast-drying magic has something to do with it.

I don’t necessarily recommend a two-yoga-class day (particularly if you’re pregnant!) but if this is going to happen to you, the In Movement tights are the ones you want to be wearing. If they stood up this well to that much work, you know they’ve got you covered for a normal, one-workout day. And no one will ever smell you coming.

8 Mind-Blowing Facts About Leggings

From Kendall Jenner to Glamour’s own staffers, it’s official—we’re living in a leggings-obsessed world. But a new survey, conducted by retail surveyor Indix, revealed some surprising news about our favorite lounge/workout pants. Here’s what we learned:

  • The average price of a pair of yoga leggings has actually dropped over the last several years. In 2014, the average pair retailed for $50.10, and in 2016, the average price was $25.40. Now, the average price has dropped to $20.70. When was the last time something you loved actually became less expensive!?

  • Almost all—99 percent!— of yoga pants on the market are made for women (up from 94 percent last year). And men pay an average of $6 more per pair than ladies do. One of the few areas where we pay less than men!

  • And the least expensive? 2LUV—$13.40 a pair!

  • Americans spent $16 billion on yoga clothing, classes, equipment and accessories in 2016.

  • If you’re in the market for some new leggings, you’ll have a lot to choose from: Indix reports that in 2017, 84 different brands make leggings, producing a total of 15,565 styles—nearly double the amount from last year.
