Cardi B Giving Away Free Coats in Brooklyn Is an Inspiration

By now, we know we can count on Cardi B to add some brightness to the world, even when things are at their gloomiest (just spend a half hour on her social media accounts if you don’t believe us). But this week, the Bronx-born rapper went above and beyond on the delightfulness scale by hitting the streets of New York and handing out hundreds of coats and sneakers to people in need.

According to WABC, Cardi was seen on Thursday at the Marlboro Houses, a housing complex in Gravesend, New York, where a crowd had gathered to get a glimpse (and selfies) with the hip-hop queen. The swell of people surprised Cardi, who had shown up to help the community as temperatures drop over the weekend (the National Weather Service had issued a freeze warning in parts of upstate New York.)

“I didn’t know it was gonna be so big,” Cardi B told WABC. “My homeboy Chuck, he told me, ‘Hey, let’s give out coats to our community, I know somebody who wants to give out coats in Marlboro,’ and I said, ‘I’m pulling out, what’s up?'”

Billboard reports that some of the coats and shoes were donated with help from organizations such as NY Tent Sale, Trax NYC, and Daniel’s Leather. The event was set up by friends of Cardi, and she made it out—despite arriving four hours late because of a scheduled photo shoot. Videos show her rolling in full of excitement and ready to help.

“You gotta support the ppl who supported you,” Cardi B says in footage while handing out the items.

Cardi took to Instagram later to thank people for braving the cold to see her, and indicated this isn’t the last time we’ll see her out and about doing good deeds: “IT WAS LIT IN MARLBORO TODAY !My Hat @astonmartinchuck hit me up a couple of days ago about a coat giveaway we couldn’t believe how big this was and how many people pulled up, i wasn’t ready??!Thanks Marlboro! I shot RED BARZ & PULL UP ON ME out here .I will be back before the year end .THANKS @traxnyc @Astonmartinchuck @danielsleather @nytentsale @mr_Footwork @bg_chopwhop FOR putting this together and the Marlboro community ?.I can’t wait to this in my borough next BX.”

The charitable giving comes just after Cardi celebrated her 26th birthday with the most extravagant surprise party ever, courtesy of her husband, rapper Offset.

Feeling inspired by Cardi? You can donate coats by getting involved with the organizations below.

  • One Warm Coat: This nationalnon-profit organization provides free coats to anyone in need.

Dove Is Officially PETA-Certified Cruelty Free

When news broke last month that California had motioned to ban all cosmetic animal testing by 2020, it felt like the first good thing to happen in months. Not only was it a bright spot within a dark news cycle, but thanks to the size of California’s economy, it seemed like the bill would effect real change in the beauty industry. Now animal lovers have another reason to celebrate: Unilever, the parent company of a handful of major drugstore brands, just announced it’s ramping up its efforts to bring an end to animal testing.

In a press release from the company, representatives wrote that Unilever is supporting a global ban on animal testing for cosmetics and collaborating with the Humane Society International (HSI) to make it happen. For an idea of how significant this news is, Unilever owns 57 beauty and personal care brands alone. Those include drugstore mainstays Dove, Simple, Love Beauty & Planet, Suave, and Clear, to name just a few. And in no accident, the release notes that Unilever’s news coincides with Dove officially gaining PETA accreditation as a cruelty-free brand.

What does this mean for your body wash? Likely, not much outside of PETA’s cruelty-free logo showing up on Dove’s labels in January 2019. According to Dove director Amy Stepanian, the brand didn’t previously test on animals and has been using alternative methods for 30 years. What the new initiative does enforce, however, is the prohibition of animal testing by governments on the brand’s behalf. (In layman’s terms: A country can’t go behind Unilever’s back and test their products on animals before they hit shelves.)

That’s NBD for Europe, admittedly: Ever progressive, the EU banned animal testing back in 2013, says David Blanchard, Unilever’s chief research and development officer. But by adding Unilever’s official cosign, Blanchard says the brand hopes it’ll put further pressure on the beauty industry and markets that require animal-testing (like China) to adopt more ethical safety testing.

The press release also mentions that through supporting the HSI, Unilever will join its #BeCrueltyFree initiative, which is leading animal testing legislative reform in multiple countries around the globe. Within Unilever, Love Beauty & Planet and Simple are in the midst of applying for PETA accreditation, Stepanian says.

It’s a small step, but one that means we’re closer to getting more global regulation around the way our makeup and skin care is tested. And on the heels of California’s animal-testing ban being signed into law on September 6, that’s looking sooner than ever.

Selena Gomez Is Giving Away Her Clothes for Free on Instagram

Any interest in a free, sparkly Prada dress that would be perfect for a fancy New Years Eve party, a black-tie wedding, or just feeling glamorous AF while you sit on the couch watching Netflix? Selena Gomez has you covered.

The singer took to Instagram stories this week to share that she’s giving away the dress she wore in her “Back to You” music video to a lucky fan. The dress is covered in silver sequins and decorated at the bottom with bright green feathers, and it looks fabulous in the video while Gomez goes to a party, steals a car, and falls in love. (As you do.) But it must have served its purpose for the singer, because she’s ready to pay it forward to her fans.

In the Instagram video, she gives viewers a glimpse into her closet. “This is my dress that I wore for the ‘Back to You’… music video, and I kind of want to give it away to someone,” she says at one point. “So, if you want this dress, let me know, and I will just send it along to you because it has no use being in my closet whatsoever.”

Gomez’s “Back to You” dress isn’t the only sparkly article of clothing she’s looking to purge from her wardrobe. In the same series of posts, she also shows off an old ice skating outfit from her short stint as an ice skater. “So the story behind this outfit, with a matching scrunchie, might I add, was that I decided I was going to be an ice skater for two days. That didn’t really work out,” she explains. “I’ll give that away too.”

Check out the video below to see the Prada dress in all its glittering glory, then shoot Selena a DM and hope for the best.

Sephora Is Giving Away Free Face Masks, and There's No Catch

It’s hard to remember, but it really wasn’t all that long ago that Sephora sales were a rare thing. Before the retailer kicked off its Weekly Wow series featuring regular 50%-off discounts, you had to rummage through pages of sales sections or drop cash so you could trade in VIB points. Still, the words free and Sephora are rarely heard in the same sentence, with the exception of free samples. But even those tiny packets of product require spending money on something in order to add them to cart. That’s why its latest deal is pretty much unheard of for the beauty emporium: For one weekend only, Sephora is giving out free face masks. And nope, there’s not a single catch or fine print.

Where most freebies come with a gift with purchase or buy one, get one stipulations, Glamour confirmed with brand reps that all you have to do is get yourself to a Sephora store this weekend (July 27 through July 29) to get a free, regular-sized Rose or Pearl face mask from the retailer’s in-house line, Sephora Collection. Yes, summer Friday counts as the weekend because Sephora really does get us.

The only challenge—beside peeling yourself off the couch in the dead of summer—is that the lines will no doubt be absurd. When MAC announced it was giving away free lipstick for National Lipstick Day this time last year, Twitter erupted with photos of long waits and stories of supplies being gone in minutes. It’s unclear exactly how limited the quantities will be for Sephora’s Free Face Mask Weekend, but given that the deal is running for a whole 72 hours, it’s likely they’ll be more prepared for the demand.

If you haven’t yet tried Sephora Collection’s face masks and are wondering if braving the crowds are worth it to walk away only $6 in the green, consider this: they regularly pop up on beauty pros’ must lists thanks to the effective-yet-affordable serums they’re soaked in. They won’t give you the instant results of, say, one of GlamGlow’s best-sellers, but for cheap sheet masks, they really get the job done. I like to leave the aloe one in the fridge on days my skin is in need of some quick soothing (a game-changer after getting hella sunburned on a recent trip to Hawaii), while the fruit enzymes in the Pineapple mask are super gentle and help exfoliate without zapping your skin dry.

Then again, I once stood in a two-hour line on Black Friday at 3 A.M. to get the full DVD set of Sex and the City for $60, so maybe I’m a terrible judge of a good deal. I’ll let you make that call. So just in case you’d rather skip the wait and shop online (or want to pick up a few extra masks in addition to the Rose or Pearl freebie if you do hit up the store), here are a few of our favorites worth nabbing.

I Tried Sephora’s Free Pore Vacuum Facial, and the Results Were Crazy

Once upon a time, facials were only for the rich and the brave. You would pull up, sign over $100 or more, and feel the warm embrace of a waffle knit towel while an esthetician stroked your face for an hour. Then would come extractions, the technical name for a pro going pore by pore to squeeze out gunk and blackheads. Now you can just walk into Sephora and get your pores vacuumed—yes, vacuumed—for free.

Earlier this year, Sephora announced it would start offering complimentary Perk Hydrating Facials in 100 stores across the U.S. The only catch being that you also have to buy $75 worth of products during your trip, which, honestly, you’d probably do there anyway. Unlike regular extractions, the Perk “pore vacuum” promises to be quick and painless. It’s also the absolute grossest thing ever, because all of the stuff it sucks out your skin goes straight into a jar of blue liquid for you to see. So, like I said, gross; but also intensely satisfying—not unlike a pimple-popping video.

Naturally I needed this thing on my face right away, so I headed to the Herald Square location in New York City ready to be $75 and a jar of dead skin lighter. My first question was how Sephora could keep things relaxing—and hygienic—in such a busy location. There’s nothing like a screaming toddler getting handsy with eyeshadow swatches to ruin the mood you traditionally get with a facial.

But when I arrived, my Sephora Skincare Advisor (SSA), Veridiana, assuaged my fears. The Skincare Studio, where they perform the treatment, looks like one of the store’s mirrored testing banks, but instead of being centrally located, they place the bank next to a wall. The logic is that your advisor can block out the traffic (and people dodging in for tissues), so it feels like more of an intimate experience. I was literally the first and only shopper in the store, but Veridiana started by demonstrating how they sanitize the machine’s mechanism before every use, which was great. Even just the thought of someone else’s pore junk intermingling with my own is too horrible to entertain—I want to see my skin trash, and mine only (I’m mostly kidding, though I do appreciate un-skewed results).

Next came a brief consultation to talk through my skin concerns. I’ve noticed some small, under-the-skin, not-quite-pimples on my cheeks over the past few weeks, and while I’m still not entirely sure what’s up with them, we agreed that it looks like some kind of congestion. Drawing on the wide world of Sephora’s skin care arsenal, Veridiana returned with a Biossance oil cleanser and a foaming Ole Henrikson cleanser (double cleansing was her number one recommendation; and after seeing the things she’s seen, below, I understand why). Rarely do I remember product recommendations after walking away from a service, and in my defense, skin care’s usually a wait-and-see kind of thing. But Sephora’s app now comes in handy for more than making rash purchases. Your SSA notes what products are used in the app’s “Digital Makeup Guide,” and then if your skin turns out fabulous, it’s not a mystery what worked so well.

I’d walked in barefaced, but Veridiana cleansed my face anyways with a short face massage before the big guns came out. Working from bare, just-cleansed skin makes the end results all the more gross interesting. The real magic is in said guns, the two vials of serum that came out next. Packed in sealed plastic bags, the first is a mild lactic acid solution that dissolves the cellular glue holding dead skin to your face, while the second is a calming serum that soothes the residual redness. The vacuum “pen” then sucks up the loosened surface cells. I’d been expecting to leave splotchy thanks to extractions, but Veridiana said that’s a common misconception. Only licensed estheticians can perform extractions, so Sephora makes sure to steer clear of the word. Instead, the “vacuum” aspect comes in the mechanism of the serum dispensers’ heads, which suck off the grime and pollution that are on your skin with the power of suction.

All in all, the vacuuming took four minutes. And then I saw this…

PHOTO: Rachel Nussbaum

…And mentally barfed. It looks like an outtake that was too gross for The Shape of Water, between the sludge and dirt and mysterious wisps of mucous-looking stuff. Veridiana LOL’d and said, “That’s New York City,” while I zoomed in and got different angles and let my inner nature photographer run wild. I have no regrets, look at this nightmare content:

I’d do it again in an instant. Not even just for that, although that’d be enough. When I got to work, three people commented on how great my skin looked. The little bumps remain, but I’m impressed, Sephora. For free-but-really-$75, I’ll happily pass up extractions for vacuumed-up pollution goo. What’s more, I’ll now live in horror of the things the air throws at your skin. Double-cleansing, do me right.
