2018 Really Blessed Us With Some Cute Celebrity Babies

It’s safe to say that 2018 hasn’t exactly been rainbows and butterflies, but the year has also brought many wonderful things: We’ve been treated to multiple royal weddings (including, yes, Priyanka Chopra‘s) as well as a year in celebrity coupledom that’s given us all the feels.

But one of our favorite parts of 2018 has been the births of so many snuggly, adorable A-list babies. From Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s newest junior royal, Prince Louis, to the multiple princesses of Calabasas (looking at you, True, Chicago, and Internet-breaking Stormi), there were so many debuts to celebrate, whether it was a celebrity’s first child or a wonderful new addition to the brood. Meet the famous babies of 2018, right this way.

Chicago West

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s third child was born via a surrogate in January and almost immediately nicknamed “Chi.” She was the first of 2018’s three Kardashian-Jenner additions to be born.

Stormi Webster

Kylie Jenner never confirmed her pregnancy (with boyfriend Travis Scott) until little Stormi was actually born in February. “My beautiful and healthy baby girl arrived February 1st and I just couldn’t wait to share this blessing. I’ve never felt love and happiness like this I could burst,” she wrote on Instagram shortly after Stormi was born.

(Kylie’s first photo of her daughter, by the way, broke Instagram’s record for most-liked photo of all time—not too bad of a debut for the newest member of this social-media-loving family.)

True Thompson

There was much drama surrounding the April birth of Khloé Kardashian’s first child with NBA player Tristan Thompson: His cheating scandal broke right before she went into labor with their adorable daughter, True. But the new mom seems be loving her latest role—and is still with Thompson.

Prince Louis of Cambridge

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s third child, Prince Louis Arthur Charles, was born in April. And soon he’ll have a new cousin when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby arrives in the spring.

Miles Theodore Stephens

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s son, born in May, is already his dad’s total mini-me—and it sees like he and older sis Luna are getting along swimmingly.

Sebastian Piers Williams

“When 2 become 3…Welcome Sebastian Piers Williams – aka Baz! Mom, Dad, and Baby are happy, healthy and totally in love! ???,” America Ferrera wrote to announce the birth of her first child with husband Ryan Piers Williams in May.

Santiago Enrique Bastón

“We are so grateful for this beautiful blessing,” Eva Longoria said of the birth of her first child with husband José Bastón in June.

Crew Gaines

Former HGTV Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines announced the birth of their son, Crew, on social media in June. “Our baby boy, Crew Gains, is here and we couldn’t be more in love,” Joanna wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of the newborn in the hospital room. “He made an unexpected (and speedy) entrance into the world two and a half weeks early – which is fitting given he was a sweet surprise from day one. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We are so grateful.”

Kulture Kiari Cephus

Nobody in pop culture seemed to have a bigger year than Cardi B—and that included the birth of her first child with then-husband Offset (the couple is now divorcing). Although Kulture was born in July, we didn’t see a picture of her until after her parents announced their split in early December.

Rani Rose Fujikawa

A simple “She’s here,” announced the arrival of Kate Hudson‘s first daughter with partner Danny Fujikawa in October. She also revealed that Rani’s name is a tribute to her late grandfather, Ron Fujikawa.

Banks Violet Bair

Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma’s daughter made her debut in October, via a home birth.

Kaavia James Union Wade

After a long struggle with infertility, Gabrielle Union and NBA star Dwyane Wayne welcomed their first child together in November via a surrogate. Little Kaavia James even has her own Instagram handle.

Genevieve Upton Verlander

Kate Upton and baseball star Justin Verlander’s baby girl arrived in early November—and you can bet these parents are in love with their new addition.

Welcome to the world, little people!

Are Marriage and Babies the New Naked Selfie?

Early-aughts young Hollywood reached its peak one night in fall 2006, when Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton were all photographed in the same car. They were quickly dubbed the Unholy Trinity by tabloids and blogs, a nod to their well-documented exploits at the time. Lohan had just accused Hilton of pouring a drink on her; meanwhile, Spears was dabbling in the party scene following her split from Kevin Federline—and Hilton was her tour guide of sorts.

The photo of Lohan, Spears, and Hilton in the car (which the New York Post disgustingly called a “bimbo summit”) encapsulates a very specific time for twentysomething celebrities: a time when fame was the name of the game, and bottle service, feuds, and sex tapes helped you win.

That’s a far cry from the social currency of today’s millennial glitterati. Now, young Hollywood is seemingly in a rush to grow up. Nick Jonas, 25, is reportedly engaged to Quantico actress Priyanka Chopra after just two months of dating. Kylie Jenner, 20, welcomed her first child with rapper Travis Scott in February. Justin Bieber popped the question to Hailey Baldwin shortly after rekindling their relationship. And, of course, we have Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson, whose whirlwind engagement—filled with couple tattoos and sappy Instagram posts—feels akin to an adolescent sugar rush.

Gone are the days when dancing on tables and posting naked selfies—a Kim Kardashian staple—established your pop-culture relevance. Three years ago, celebrities were tripping over themselves to appear the sexiest on Instagram. That still exists, but it appears the “cool” thing to do now is settle down through marriage or babies. Domestic is the new debauchery.

But why? Why are all these celebrities—some who can’t even legally drink—in such a hurry to get their hands on a metaphorical white-picket fence? After all, millennials as a whole are still apt to get married later in life, and a growing number don’t want kids at all. Jonas, Jenner, Grande, Bieber, and Baldwin, on the other hand, are ready to skip all the stages that come between “My name is…” and, “Will you marry me?” It feels rash.

That word, however, might offer us the answer. The millennial generation is also the generation of instant gratification. Food, transportation, laundry, and even sex are all accessible on our phones in five seconds with little to no interaction with others. A message turns into a hookup, which may become something more. But if it doesn’t, that’s OK, because there are most likely 50 more messages waiting in your inbox to ignite this cycle again. We no longer have to wait to be stimulated; we’re overstimulated.

It only makes sense, then, that young celebrities—who have the most access to this instant gratification culture—are ripping through relationships faster than we can keep up. They’re accustomed to getting things quickly and easily, so it’s understandable why they might be ready for marriage now. At 23.

There’s another phenomenon possibly at play, too. Our current political and social climates are just so tumultuous that young stars could be clinging onto anything that makes them feel safe. It’s been reported that Grande and Davidson feel connected to each other because they’ve each experienced extreme trauma. (Davidson lost his father on September 11, and Grande’s concert in Manchester last year fell victim to a terrorist attack.) Bieber and Baldwin are both reportedly quite religious, a shared bond that no doubt helps them navigate life. With so much uncertainty in the air, it’s not completely far-fetched to see why celebrities are itching to lock down the people in their lives who give them any semblance of peace.

How this will affect millennials (and post-millennials) at large is still a question. It’s safe to say, though, that a larger wave of young people looking to settle down could be coming. In fact, it may have already arrived: Consider how it’s now trendy to stay in on Friday nights and scoff at the exhaustion of club culture. Plus, reality TV shows like Love Island and The Bachelor are in the business of selling everlasting love to contestants in their twenties. Whether or not those relationships pan out is irrelevant; what matters is people want to lose themselves in the idea of finding a partner.

The shift toward young domesticity has actually been around for a while; it just took Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber joining in for the world to notice. They’re now the faces of this movement: the movement of 22-year-olds who are ready to stop playing around, and start playing house.

Rachel Maddow Breaks Down on Air While Discussing Trump's 'Tender Age' Shelters for Immigrant Babies

The reports about Donald Trump’s zero tolerance immigration policy ripping families apart has elicited a response from many, including all of the living first ladies. But on Tuesday night, reaction hit cable news after an Associated Press report on “tender age” shelters for immigrant babies and children resulted in Rachel Maddow breaking down in tears live on the air.

The AP report states that Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children forcibly separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border to at least three “tender age” shelters in South Texas—with a fourth shelter is set to open in Houston.

“Lawyers and medical providers who have visited the Rio Grande Valley shelters described play rooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis,” the report reads.

“The thought that they are going to be putting such little kids in an institutional setting? I mean it is hard for me to even wrap my mind around it,” Kay Bellor, vice president for programs at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, tells the AP. “Toddlers are being detained.”

Maddow struggled to read the breaking news, her voice trembling. “Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children,” Maddow began before stopping to seemingly hold back tears. She asks for someone to put up a graphic for the story, but when one was not available she tried to continue.

Eventually she realizes she’s not going to make it through. “I think I’m going to have to hand this off” before closing her show for the evening and sending MSNBC viewers to Lawrence O’Donnell, who was reporting live from Brownsville, Texas.

After the show, Maddow took to Twitter to apologize and finish what she was trying to say on TV. “Ugh, I’m sorry,” she wrote. “If nothing else, it is my job to actually be able to speak while I’m on TV.”

While, of course, there were detractors online who called Maddow’s emotions, “crocodile tears,” many applauded her for being affected by the crisis.

Thanks to Tammy Duckworth, Babies Are Now Allowed on the Senate Floor

Just 10 days after becoming the first Senator to give birth while in office, Tammy Duckworth made history again last night when she introduced a rule change that would allow children (like her newborn daughter Maile Pearl Bowlsbey) under one year of age on the Senate floor. Senators are also now allowed to breastfeed during votes if necessary, ensuring that they would not have to choose between caring for their child and doing their jobs.

In a statement thanking her colleagues, Duckworth said: “By ensuring that no Senator will be prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities simply because they have a young child, the Senate is leading by example and sending the important message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies. These policies aren’t just a women’s issue, they are a common-sense economic issue.” According to CNN, Duckworth had been working behind the scenes for some time on the matter and the last time additional floor privileges were granted was in 1977, allowing service dogs on the floor.

Though the change passed with unanimous consent, Senator Amy Klobacher (D—Minn.) told CNN, “It’s been quite a journey.” Apparently some lawmakers raised questions like whether diapers would be changed on the floor or whether there would be a dress code for babies. She continued, “The Senate is steeped in tradition and just like the rest of the country, sometimes things have to change.”

Dick Durbin, the senior Senator from Duckworth’s home state of Illinois said of the change, “I think it will do us good in the United States Senate, every once in a while to see a pacifier next to the antique ink wells on our desks.” He continued, “Perhaps the cry of a baby will shock the Senate at times into speaking out and even crying out on the issues that confront our nation and the world.”
