'Little Fires Everywhere': Everything We Know So Far

More than a year after Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington shared that their production companies would team up on a TV series, the treatment that brought Sharp Objects and Big Little Lies to the small screen is finally coming for Celeste Ng‘s blockbuster novel Little Fires Everywhere. And across social media, Witherspoon and Washington have shared tiny hints about the forthcoming series, including a few peeks behind the scenes as the show takes shape. From what we can see so far, it’s going to be the next major installment in appointment TV.

The cast is only one table read into production so far, so there’s still a while to wait for its premiere. To tide you over until then, here’s everything we know so far about the sure-to-be blockbuster series.

The cast is stacked.

Witherspoon and Washington will headline the series as rival matriarchs of the Richardson and Warren families. Joshua Jackson will play alongside Witherspoon as her character’s husband. They’re not the only names to get excited about: Up-and-comers from hits like The Good Doctor and La La Land, including Rosemarie DeWitt, Jade Pettyjohn, Jordan Elsass, Gavin Lewis, and Lexi Underwood, will appear in the series.

It’s based on Celeste Ng’s bestselling novel. Little Fires Everywhere topped the bestseller list in 2017 shortly following its debut. It’s the kind of women-centric, multigenerational drama that begged for a TV adaptation. The novel follows two opposing families in Shaker Heights, Ohio: the Richardsons, an affluent family with four children, and the Warrens, a mother-daughter duo who struggle to get by. A unexpected friendship between the families’ children draws them together, but a custody battle for a Chinese-American baby threatens to tear them—and the entire town—apart.

The show won’t copy the book line for line, but Ng gave the adaptation her stamp of approval after a visit to the writers’ room last fall. “True to the characters and themes and plot, but with lots of new layers and some tweaks and twists,” she tweeted.

Production is officially underway—and Washington and Witherspoon play a huge role behind-the-scenes, too. Last week, Washington shared a peek at the cast’s first table read. “The Warrens and the Richardsons have reported for duty!” she wrote. “#LittleFiresEverywhere production is underway!:”

The cast isn’t the only aspect of the show powered by women: Washington and Witherspoon are also named as executive producers on the series.

The show will air on Hulu. Washington and Witherspoon secured the rights to Little Fires Everywhere back in 2018. It was shopped around to several streaming networks before finding a home at Hulu.

It’s slated for one season. The show will air eight episodes on Hulu, so, technically, it’s a miniseries. Big Little Lies started out that way too…and then we got a second season. So the story could go on.

A release date hasn’t been announced. The series is estimated to premiere in 2020, but an official schedule hasn’t been released yet. We’ll update this post with the official premiere date when it’s available.

Rachel Lindsay Says She's a 'Little Pissed Off' About Becca Kufrin's *Bachelorette* Ending

Becca Kufrin’s season finale of The Bachelorette was dramatic, sure, but it was a cake walk compared to what Rachel Lindsay went through last year. If you forget, one of Lindsay’s suitors, Peter Kraus, was such a fan favorite that it seemed like her actual love story with the winner, Bryan Abasolo, was pushed to the wayside. She constantly had to defend her choice and punt allegations that she was “settling” by picking Abasolo. At one point during the season, Kraus told Lindsay to find someone to have a “mediocre life” with. When the finale aired, the blink-and-you-missed-it proposal at the end of Lindsay’s season was overlooked by viewers. It was like her love life and happiness played second fiddle to the drama—and this was her season of The Bachelorette.

So it’s understandable why Lindsay’s a little bit salty about the fairytale treatment Kufrin received for her season finale, which aired last night (August 6). The controversy surrounding her winner, Garrett Yrigoyen, aside, what ABC viewers saw last night was pure, blissful romance—the polar opposite of Lindsay’s tearful (and windy) finale.

“Do you ever recall seeing Bryan profess how excited he was to propose to me? Do you recall seeing me cry about how I was so excited to say yes to Bryan and get my fairytale ending? The answer would be ‘no’ to both of those questions,” Lindsay wrote in her Bachelorette recap for Us Weekly. “And it is a shame because both of those things actually happened. You just did not see them. See, you know more about the journey of my breakup than the journey to my proposal acceptance. I think it is fair to say that I was denied my on-camera happy ending.”

She continued, “Do I sound a little pissed off? Well that is because I am. Take a trip down memory lane to exactly, oh let’s say one year ago. Becca did not sit on stage for three hours and watch the finale for the first time in front of a live audience. Becca did not have to deal with someone telling her she would live a mediocre life. Becca did not have to deal with being baited with real time questions about her emotions watching certain scenes. Nope, that was me.”

Don’t get it twisted: Lindsay is happy for Kufrin—and she’s happy in real life, too. She’s just upset her Bachelorette finale was edited to appear more tumultuous than romantic. “I was placed on display for three hours and labeled an angry black female,” Lindsay continued. “And there will always be that stigma attached to my finale because it has been said that when truth is blurred by misinformation, perception becomes reality and all is lost.”

What Lindsay wanted was to have her love story documented, and that’s not an unreasonable request. So how can the network pay her back? A televised wedding wouldn’t hurt, though Lindsay isn’t sure she’s down for that. “I have no idea,” she said. “But they damn sure owe us one.”

'Little Women' PBS Miniseries Debuts First Trailer

Two years ago, the CW announced it was making a dark, gritty reboot of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. This is, after all, the same network that gave Archie and co. a sexy makeover on Riverdale. As reported by Deadline, the series would drop Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy in a post-apocalyptic Philadelphia, where they would try to uncover a widespread conspiracy while trying not to murder one another.

The trailer you’re about to see is not for this series, though. Unfortunately, we’ll never get to see this (frankly awesome) version of Little Women, as it was killed by the CW last year because “the script just couldn’t get there.” Instead, this trailer is for PBS’s decidedly dystopia-free miniseries remake of Little Women, which airs next spring. Starring Angela Lansbury as Aunt March and Emily Watson as Marmee, the Masterpiece adaptation of Little Women is a lot closer in tone and accuracy to the ’90s movie with Winona Ryder and Christian Bale.

The first trailer, which dropped on Monday, is only 30 seconds long and offers just a glimpse into what Masterpiece viewers can expect come May 13 and 20, 2018. It begins with Aunt March declaring, “Four small children is a recipe for heartache, headache, and indigestion” as the March sisters lob snowballs at one another. We get a first look at a rather dapper-looking Laurie (Jonah Hauer-King), Meg (Willa Fitzgerald) having the time of her life at Annie Moffat’s ball, and Jo (Maya Thurman-Hawke) being angsty about not having been born a boy. There’s not much of Beth (Annes Elwy) or Amy (Kathryn Newton), but it seems like they’ll get just as faithful of a treatment as their sisters.

This isn’t the only Little Women adaptation coming next year. According to Deadline, there’s a movie version in the works at ABC that puts the March sisters in modern times. Keep your fingers crossed—Little Women might be getting the Riverdale treatment after all.

Miley Cyrus Says She Has 'Little Spies' Who Keep Tabs on Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth seem like one of Hollywood’s happiest couples. Take one look at either of their Instagram accounts, and you’ll see why. Cyrus literally wrote “Malibu,” her absurdly happy, sunshiny new single, about him. On the outside, it seems like they have a perfect relationship.

But of course, nothing is perfect, and Hemsworth and Cyrus went through a lengthy—not to mention highly publicized—breakup before getting to this good place. The Younger Now singer opened up about this in a new interview with Howard Stern, revealing Hemsworth actually moved into the house where she recorded her first album during their split, though he didn’t know it at first.

The irony of this anecdote is amazing, yes, but it’s not the only revealing part of Cyrus’ very candid chat with Stern. Cyrus also opened up about how she deals with Hemsworth spending time with his female costars. Despite fully trusting Hemsworth and being confident in their relationship, she admits she still gets a little nervous when he works with other actresses.

“I get that little butterfly in my stomach,” she said. “I know me and I know what our relationship is, so anyone’s gonna feel like…it’s f-cking abnormal, I think, but my life is abnormal.” Still, to put her butterflies at ease, Cyrus says she asks people on set to keep a close eye on her fiancé. “I keep my little spies,” she said. “So I don’t always have to be there.”

This is simultaneously genius and ridiculous. The idea of Cyrus hiring a SWAT team to clock every time Hemsworth goes to the craft service table is hilarious. On the other, if she does trust Hemsworth, this really isn’t necessary—and it sort of demonizes Hemsworth’s female costars, which is a little…ick.

But leave it to Cyrus to have the most extra way of keeping tabs on her significant other. Now I want spies! How do I get spies?
