The American Music Awards 2017 Best Moments—and the One Absolute Worst

The American Music Awards has emerged as one of the most exciting, dynamic events of the year. It was here where Selena Gomez opened up about her lupus-triggered anxiety and depression, Justin Bieber gave a performance that made literally everyone cry, and Gigi Hadid did a Melania Trump impression that broke the Internet. There’s something about the AMAs that’s looser—and more fun—than other awards shows, which might explain its appeal. After all, who doesn’t love a night where Gomez’s blond hair is the focal point?

By the way, that last one is literally true: Gomez debuted a new, blond look at tonight’s American Music Awards, and people are obsessing over it. They’re also buzzing about her performance with Marshmello, as well as Tracee Ellis Ross’ hosting cred and Pink and Kelly Clarkson’s duet. These moments, below, are the highlights of the 2017 American Music Awards. Oh, and there’s one lowlight we have to address too. Read on.

Best

Jamie Foxx’s emotional opening speech, which featured first responders.

He said a rousing few words about the dumpster fire that was 2017 and how we need to have hope going into the next year. “Together, we can unite as a people and as a nation,” he said.

Pink and Kelly Clarkson’s performance of “Everybody Hurts” by REM.

The two pop superstars joined forces shortly after Foxx’s speech for a searing rendition of the iconic 1992 song. Their vocals, naturally, were on point, and their synergy was palpable. It was the perfect way to kick off the show, and truly necessary catharsis from the horrific events that happened this year. The crowd gave them a standing ovation.

The first dress host Tracee Ellis Ross wore during her opening monologue.

Opulence! You own everything! Everything is yours!

The mama/daughter love between Tracee Ellis Ross and Diana Ross all evening.

Let’s petition for a Freaky Friday remake starring them.

Demi Lovato takes on the haters with her “Sorry Not Sorry” performance.

Before Lovato hit the stage, a barrage of mean tweets about her appeared on screen—but she quickly reclaimed the narrative and gave a performance that slayed our souls.

Nick Jonas delivers routine sexiness during his performance of “Find You.”

Oh, and the song is also a bop.

Shawn Mendes’ smile.

Yes, his smile was a highlight. Don’t @ me.

Selena Gomez’s eerie-but-beautiful performance of “Wolves.”

She was essentially a final girl in a horror movie, and we lived for it.

Christina Aguilera’s tribute to Whitney Houston and The Bodyguard.

Her vocals gave the audience chills, though not everyone was on board.

Lady Gaga’s colorful performance of “The Cure.”

It was the most vibrant moment from the evening. Gaga wore actual ornaments on her face. I love icons!

Pink defies gravity (yet again).

She performed her new song “Beautiful Trauma” while twirling on the side of a building. Literally.

BTS. Just BTS.

Every American is a fan of this band after tonight.

Diana Ross’ performance.

She was honored with a lifetime achievement award during tonight’s show, and she brought the house down with a medley of her greatest hits.

And…the Worst Moment

The fact there were next to no women in the general award categories.

Host Tracee Ellis Ross noted that tonight’s American Music Awards would celebrate the many strong, talented women in the music industry, but there was a major problem with that sentiment: There were barely any female nominees. In fact, there wasn’t a single woman in the Artist of the Year category. Not one. How could the AMAs celebrate women tonight if it didn’t even bother to nominate them?

Emmy Awards 2017 Recap: The Best and Worst Moments

There was a lot of buzz going into tonight’s Emmy Awards—with Stephen Colbert hosting the ceremony and a star-studded nominees list, things were bound to happen. The Best Actress in a Limited Series contenders alone were a who’s-who of Oscar winners. (Spoiler alert: Nicole Kidman won.) Plus, the excitement around the surplus of quality TV shows in general gave some extra sparkle to tonight’s Emmys.

That being said, it was still an awards show, which means the running time was about an hour too long, and there were a few self-indulgent, eye-roll moments we could’ve done without. Overall, though, the show was a great time. So here are the best and worst moments from the 2017 Emmy Awards.

BEST

Issa Rae saying she’s rooting for all the Black nominees.

Amazing.

Stephen Colbert’s opening song.

He sang about how the world seems less like a dumpster fire when you watch good television. And, well, he’s right. Our only complaint? The jingle reminded us that Bryan, not Peter, won this season of The Bachelorette.

Colbert’s monologue.

It was brisk and funny—living proof that hosting gigs are best left up to the professionals. The only slumps were when he cracked a few thin jokes about the Hurricane Harvey and Irma crises and the Sean Spicer cameo—but we’ll get to that.

Laura Dern winning Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series.

Her performance in Big Little Lies was one of the highlights in entertainment this year—period. She deserved to win, and her speech thanking the “fierce” tribe of women on the show was A-plus.

Donald Glover winning Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series for Atlanta.

Again, he was a deserving candidate, so it’s amazing he won. (He also took home the prize for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.)

Rachel Bloom’s jazzy dance that introduced the Ernst & Young accountants.

Honestly, we’re not deserving of her.

Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin having a 9 to 5 reunion after 30-plus years.

They joked about Donald Trump and vibrators. It was a moment.

Alec Baldwin’s epic Trump diss during his speech for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

“I suppose I should say, at long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy,” he said, referring to the fact Trump was nominated several times for The Apprentice but never won.

RuPaul literally playing an Emmy during a sketch with Colbert.

Where is RuPaul’s Emmy for being Emmy?

Issa Rae and Riz Ahmed presenting an award together.

Hotness. Overload.

The fact that this show was perhaps the most diverse Emmys ceremony to date.

Queer and people of color representation was stronger than ever before—both in the winners and the audience. Hopefully this is a sign of where the industry is going.

Lena Waithe becoming the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series (Master of None).

“I see each and everyone one of you,” she said about the queer community during her speech. “The things that make us different: those are our superpowers. Everyday when you walked out the door, put on your imaginary cape and go out there and conquer the world—because the world would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren’t in it.”

Nicole Kidman winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for Big Little Lies.

This was the most competitive category of the night, and Kidman got very emotional during her speech.

Riz Ahmed winning winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for The Night Of.

He’s officially the national bae.

Elisabeth Moss winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Handmaid’s Tale.

It’s incredible that this feminist show received so much love tonight. Progress!

Kidman and Reese Witherspoon’s plea for more roles for women.

“Bring women to the front of their own stories,” Witherspoon said while accepting the award for Outstanding Limited Series for Big Little Lies. “Make them the heroes of their own stories.” Kidman added, “This is a friendship that then created opportunities out of our frustration because we weren’t getting offered great roles. So now, more great roles for women, please.” Damn straight.

WORST

Sean Spicer making a surprise appearance during Colbert’s monologue.

So…we’re normalizing his fuckery now?

Parton making a joke about her large breasts.

It’s so problematic that she still feels the need to do this. She’s Dolly Effing Parton! Evan Fonda rolled her eyes at this.

Seth McFarlane doing all those Family Guy impressions.

This felt, I don’t know, kinda lame?

Sorry, Makeup Wipes Are the Actual Worst

My skin care routine in my early twenties can be summed up in four letters: DGAF. But now—as I speed-walk toward the finish line of my late twenties—taking care of my face is on the top of my priorities list. Not because I want to beat back the ravages of time (I truly DGAF about that), but because I want my skin to be radiant 24/7. My skin’s luminosity pretty much flickers like the bare bulb in a horror movie basement—it’s just not reliable. Luckily, I genuinely enjoy my twice-daily face cleansing self-care rituals. Fifteen minutes of being absolutely present in my body, while also taking care of it, is something I desperately need. I love skin care products, and not just the fun, bubbly ones. I live for a good serum. I have a whole shelf dedicated to acids and exfoliants. But the one thing I don’t mess with? Makeup wipes.

I’ll grant you that they’re good at cleaning makeup off of clothes and wiping away stubborn lipstick or mascara, but they suck at cleaning your face. Makeup wipes are fake skin care, and I say that as a Bravo TV fan with a high tolerance for all things contrived. While quick and convenient, using them at night wrecked havoc on my skin. Since it looked like my makeup had disappeared, I didn’t feel like I had to follow up with an actual wash. After all, remover is right there in the product name.

That’s why they’re such a scam.

Like that one hook up buddy you keep inviting over even though they do just a meh job, makeup wipes seem like a great idea at the time. They’re not. They’re terrible. I absolutely understand their uncomplicated allure. I had a sex-friend through college and our (not-really-a) relationship seemed like a low-maintenance thing. In reality, we were creating deep-rooted problems along the way that would take a long time to remedy. It was healthier for us both when we parted ways. And it will be healthier for both you and your skin if you break up with makeup wipes.

“Makeup wipes seem like a great idea at the time. They’re not. They’re terrible.”

To confirm my suspicions, I turned to Dr. Joshua Zeichner, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research in Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital. And, yes, your makeup wipes are lying to you.

First things first: Makeup wipes don’t really clean your skin. Mostly, they smear around whatever makeup, dirt, and dead skin is hanging out on your face, leaving a trail of irritated skin in their wake. According to Zeichner, makeup wipes can cause irritation due to preservatives that prevent micro-organisms from contaminating the wipes. In some, that includes formaldehyde-releasing chemicals, solubilizers, surfactants, and emulsifiers. The bad stuff tucked away inside of makeup wipes is housed in the cleansing ingredient so unless you follow your wipe down with a cleanser, you increase your risk of developing inflammation on your skin, Zeichner says.

Then there’s the mechanics of scrubbing your face with makeup wipes, which can also leave you with red, angry skin. “Rubbing can cause low-grade inflammation that, over time, can promote skin pigmentation or even early wrinkling,” Zeichner told me. I’m not too tripped about wrinkles (they’re inevitable), but I’d rather stumble into my bathroom for a haphazard round of double-cleansing than risk any wack pigmentation issues.

Now, let me be clear, Dr. Zeichner did say that compared to not washing your face, wipes are a great option. But personally, I’m staunchly opposed to a better than nothing mentality. Is it a fact that rubbing cooking oil on your face will make it moisturized? Sure, there’s some hydration to be found in almost all oils, but you cannot convince me that kitchen cabinet moisturizer is better than the one I’m currently using.

If you’ve got face wash sitting in your bathroom, there’s no reason not to walk, crawl, or drag yourself to the sink and wash your damn face. It might feel smart to have an “in case of emergency” stash of makeup wipes next to your bed, but if you’re going to take the extra step to cleanse your face at all, why risk pigmentation, irritation, or a breakout? Eliminate the problem and hit up your bathroom as soon as you get home after a late night out. Lately, I’ve started this thing where I walk in the door and straight to the sink to take full advantage of my fast-draining energy. I don’t need to be 100 percent awake to Netflix-binge, but I do need to be at least 85 percent mostly-awake to go through my full skin care routine.

Of course, there are passes to be given here. I loathe makeup wipes, but there are times when I can’t drag myself out of bed, not because I drank too much—although that has been known to happen—but because I’m sad or sick or a depressive combination of both. In those moments, I’ve got a better wash-in-bed solution: I keep a bottle of no-rinse micellar water and some organic cotton pads on my bedside table. The combo works like a charm and doesn’t leave my skin dry and itchy in the morning. Break up with your wipes. Wash your face.
