'80s-Style Shell Suits Are Here to Replace Your Track Pant Obsession

There are a few nostalgic fashion items that still feel on the cusp of a comeback—that, if you saw someone on the street wearing them, you’d assume it was ironic. On paper, the loud shell suits popularized by ’80s sportswear, with their colorful nylon and baggy fit, definitely fit that bill. Even in the age of tiny sunglasses and fanny packs, these feel a tad too dated to make a grand reentrance. But then, you have Gucci sending its own riff on the style down its Spring 2018 runway; hallmark athletic brands like Champion, Reebok, and Nike are revisiting the silhouette in heritage colorways and patterns. Thrift stores and Etsy are no longer your only options for getting that look.

E-commerce site Lyst reported a spike in searches around a range of terms—including shell jacket, shell tracksuit, shell suit top, combat trousers, and parachute pants—beginning in May and reaching a high point after Paris Fashion Week Men’s in late June. Most of these entries are coming from New York and London, according to Lyst, with searches up 87 percent year over year. The platform suggests recent collections from Gucci, Prada, and Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton may have played a role in this surge. Plus, Bella Hadid has been spotted in a shell suit or two, Kylie Jenner wore a neon version to Fashion Week… This comeback story is getting harder and harder to ignore.

If you’re one of those shoppers that’s been eyeing shell suits on the sly—or one who rocks the ’80s aesthetic loud and proud—we’ve rounded up 17 sets to try now.

Kylie Jenner Is on Track to Be the Youngest Self-Made Billionaire in History

Kylie Jenner has long been fodder for tabloid headlines. From her lips injections to her decision to have a baby at 20, the youngest of the Jenner-Kardashian sisters takes the hits. But as Forbes reveals in latest cover feature, titled “America’s Women Billionaires,” Jenner has been too busy bringing in the cash from her makeup line, Kylie Cosmetics, to notice. In fact, the magazine estimates she’s currently pacing to be the youngest self-made billionaire ever—male or female.

“Even using a conservative multiple, and applying our standard 20 percent discount, Forbes values her company, which has since added other cosmetics like eye shadow and concealer, at nearly $800 million,” Forbes explained, importantly noting that Jenner herself maintains 100 percent ownership over all of it. By the time Jenner turns 22 years old next year, it predicts she’ll have hit the billion dollar threshold—a milestone not even Mark Zuckerberg achieved until age 23.

Given her success, it’s wild to think Jenner began Kylie Cosmetics only two years ago with a single product: the Kylie Lip Kit, which consisted of a liquid lipstick and a matching lip liner for $29. Since its launch, the company has sold more than $630 million worth of makeup. Hell, she brought in $18 million in a single day when she dropped her holiday collection in 2016.

“Social media is an amazing platform,” Jenner said of how she’s grown her business. “I have such easy access to my fans and my customers.”

What makes it all the more impressive is that she’s not the first member of the Kardashian family to launch a beauty brand. In 2012, Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe Kardashian collectively launched a brand called Khroma Beauty. However, almost immediately after the brand’s launch, it was sucked into legal controversy (among somewhat lackluster sales) and was pulled from shelves by 2013. While the other sisters have since gone on to launch fairly successful beauty products, none have even come close to Jenner’s success. (Kim’s KKW Beauty, which launched in June last year, is estimated to have brought $100 million in revenue, so far.)

Makeup isn’t the only way Jenner is raking in the dough, though. She’s also got millions coming in thanks to her near lifetime involvement on E!’s Keeping Up With The Kardashians, as well as her endorsement deals with brands like Puma and PacSun. This, Forbes says, places her entire net worth somewhere around $900 million.

Moreover, all of this hard work by a woman barely out of her teens has also made her the richest in her own household—by far. According to Time, her supermodel older sister Kendall is worth an estimated $18 million. Khloe Kardashian’s worth, it’s estimated, sits around $40 million, while Kourtney’s bank account is apparently sitting on $35 million. As for Kim, the women who without question rocketed the Kardashian-Jenner family to fame, she’s worth an estimated $350 million thanks to her television show, endorsements, mobile game, and KKW Beauty.

Truly, after following in many of her elder sister’s footsteps it appears Jenner has exemplified the saying “the student becomes the master.”

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Reportedly Could Not Care Less About Taylor Swift's Diss Track

PHOTO: Larry Busacca/Getty Images

Last week, in the clap-back track heard round the world, Taylor Swift (allegedly) exacted year-in-the-making lyrical revenge on Kim Kardashian and Kanye West with her new single, “Look What You Made Me Do.”

The song and video are packed with subtle—and not-so-subtle—references to the couple. But in true Kim and Kanye fashion, they reacted by…not caring at all. Remember the time Amy Schumer did a slip-and-fall in front of them on the red carpet, and they completely ignored the entire thing? It’s basically that, but even icier.

According to TMZ, West is more focused on his feud with ex-BFF JAY-Z than his beef with person-he-hadn’t-heard-of-until-2009, T.Swift. Meanwhile, in Kardashian’s mind, “the whole feud ended over a year ago.” Do the math: That’s when she released the recordings that disproved Swift’s claims that she never approved the lyric’s for West’s “Famous” song—and the Internet pretty much took Kim’s side.

Kardashian celebrated the release of “Look What You Made Me Do” by tweeting a completely unrelated photo of her son the morning the song came out. Then, she blocked the snake emoji from her social media feed to avoid being spammed by Swift fans who were attempting to give Kardashian a taste of her own medicine. Still, it’s pretty clear that the Kardashian-Wests want nothing to do with the eight-year-long drama.

While Swift hasn’t officially confirmed that the song is about the rap–reality duo, the Internet is all but convinced. Everything from the album typography, which looks eerily similar to West’s Life of Pablo fonts, to the lyrics of the song that seemingly reference the “tilted stage” West used during his last tour (“I don’t like your little games / I don’t like your tilted stage / The role you made me play of the fool / No, I don’t like you.”) to the video, which makes note of the “receipts” Kardashian used to put the infamous Swift call on blast.

Even so, Kim and Kanye’s names may be underlined in red on a Taylor Swift hit-list filled with pop stars and ex-boyfriends, but it seems like they really couldn’t care less.
