First Lady Melania Trump Had Kidney Surgery This Morning

First Lady Melania Trump underwent kidney surgery this morning at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center near Washington, D.C., her office announced today (Monday, May 14) in a statement.

Trump, who turned 48 last month, had been experiencing a recurring issue with her kidney that her office describes as benign. According to the statement, the procedure was successful and Trump experienced no complications. Still, she’s expected to remain under hospital supervision for the rest of the week following the procedure.

“Melania Trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney issue,” the statement said. “The procedure was successful and there were no complications. … [She] will likely remain there for the duration of the week. The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere.” Embolization procedures help reduce or cut off the supply of blood to a tumor or other abnormal growth, according to the Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

Prior to today’s hospitalization, Trump appeared outwardly in good health this week. On May 7, she unveiled her newest philanthropic initiative, Be Best, which focuses on the well-being of children and kindness and safety for kids using social media. This was followed by an appearance on May 11 at a ceremony for Military Mothers and Spouses in the White House East Room.

Trump is the first U.S. first lady to undergo a serious medical procedure while in the White House since Nancy Reagan underwent a mastectomy in 1987, CNN reports. The outlet also reports that President Donald Trump remained at the White House during his wife’s surgery, but he’s expected to visit the hospital “shortly.”

Katy Perry Responds to Plastic Surgery Rumors

Plastic surgery is a purely personal choice, and yet for years tabloids have turned speculation of such into a national pastime—something Katy Perry, who’s been in the public eye for over a decade now, knows well. Of course, no celebrity should ever be obligated to “fess up” to having work done, but in a recent interview for her new CoverGirl lip gloss collection, Perry decided to address the long-standing rumors head on.

“I haven’t had any,” she told Refinery29 specifically about plastic surgery. “I’ve done lasers and got [filler] injections under my eyes for the hollowing—which I’d recommend for everyone who wants a solution for their dark circles—but all of my assets are real. People tend to think they are fake, but it doesn’t really matter.”

She joins a long list of celebrity women who have pushed back against the idea that their bodies and choices are up for debate, which feels especially relevant in a post-Weinstein world. Kaley Cuoco, Courteney Cox, and Sarah Hyland have all recently addressed the “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” stigma placed on women in Hollywood.

But because more people now are treating injectables and plastic surgery like any other treatment—and not like it’s something to hide—Perry said she sees that kind of judgment disappearing. “We’re getting away from that negative stigma about physical alterations. Of course, always be your authentic self, but if someone wants a nose job that makes them feel better, and they love their profile more because of it, it’s like ‘Go ahead!'” she said. “Do whatever makes you feel better about yourself.”

Chrissy Metz Wants People to Stop Asking Her if She's Having Weight-Loss Surgery

At a Hollywood Reporter roundtable earlier this year, Chrissy Metz said she’d eventually love to play a character whose storyline wasn’t centered around weight. Her character on This Is Us (Kate Pearson) is three-dimensional and nuanced, yes, but the bulk of her dialogue is about her body insecurities and desire to shed pounds. For some reason, we’re still not at a place where a plus-size character can simply exist without their weight being a thing.

This carries over into real life, too. If you go on YouTube and watch a few of Metz’s interviews, you’ll notice a trend: People always ask her about her weight. Without fail. Metz is a good sport about these questions: She answers them warmly and honestly, but it’s still frustrating she has to address it. (In some interviews, it feels like she’s even apologizing for it, which is problematic and wrong on so many levels.)

This line of questioning also infiltrates her personal life, off-camera. The actress told the Today show on Tuesday that the question she wishes people would stop asking her is whether or not she’s having weight loss surgery.

“[They ask], ‘Are you gonna be doing gastric bypass?'” Metz said. “What? Some people do feel like they’re my doctors and they have tried to diagnose me on the Internets, so that’s weird. ‘Cause like, I’m good. I’m good, but thanks. I’m good.”

Watch Metz’s interview for yourself, below:

This is a good time to remind everyone that you cannot determine a person’s health status just by looking at them. Plus-size people are routinely subjected to unfair and incorrect criticisms based solely on their appearance, and that needs to stop. We’re more than just our bodies, people.
