6 Tips for Bra Shopping When You Have Big Boobs

Anyone who’s had to shop for DDD+ bras can attest: If your cups runneth over, so to speak, it’s can be harder to find a style that fits your needs—whether that means having support, wanting to show off cleavage, or simply feeling comfortable. Many brands don’t accommodate cup sizes in the E, F, G, and H range; and variety is lacking when it comes to fashion-forward styles. (Let’s see some variety with lace, color, and design value, yeah?) Rather than accept defeat, you deserve a good—no, great!—bra that can meet all of your demands.

You already know the importance of a professional fitting, of building a bra wardrobe of a few key styles, and of being open to investing a little bit more in your underwear drawer to get what you need out of it. But what about the little construction details in your bra that make all the difference, or recognizing the tell-tale signs of when your band has been overworn? Glamour went to the lingerie experts for more detailed advice to aid large-breasted shoppers with their bra shopping endeavors. Check out what the experts—Margaret Quinn, Marketing Manager for Addition Elle; Ra’el Cohen, Head of Design at ThirdLove; Jessica Pfister, Vice President of Le Mystère; Lyn Lewis, CEO of Journelle; Dawn Kenney, National Consultant Manager for Wacoal; Helene Morris, designer of Lonely; and Willy Mrasek, Creative Director of the Felina Group—had to say.

Accept that you’re likely wearing the wrong size. It’s incredibly common for folks to be buying and wearing the wrong bra size—and, if you have large breasts, experts say it’s usually because you’re trying to squeeze into a bra that’s too small or not supportive enough. (Kenney and Lewis both say that the majority of busty shoppers buy a bra in too big of a band size and too small of a cup size.) A few of the tell-tale signs: bra straps that are constantly falling, underwires that dig into your boob, cups that gape… If any or all of those feel all too familiar, Lewis suggests finding a “sister size” to the one you’ve already been wearing—you’ll come across many guides to landing on that magic number online.

Really pay attention to the band. Lewis notes that eighty percent of support comes from the band to support the weight of the bust. It should fit evenly from front to back and not move or shift when you raise your arms, and should lay flat across your back without rising up (if it does, that means it’s too big, since the weight of the breasts is pulling it up). Wear your bra on the loosest hook, so that when the band stretches out over time you can get more wear out of it by simply tightening. (Per Cohen, you’ll know you’re wearing the right band size when you can slip two fingers underneath the back of it.)

Know what a proper fit feels like. The cups should always fit smoothly across the breasts, without gaping, overflow, or digging into the tissue. (If there is any bulging, “the cup is too small or your straps are too tight,” notes Pfister.) The gore—aka. the piece of material between the two cups—should lay flat on your chest, hitting at the center chest bone, while the underwire should follow the perimeter of the breast tissue and rest on the ribcage. The straps should never slip (you should only be able to fit two fingers under it, says Pfister) or dig into your shoulders (they’re not the ones providing the support, after all—that’s what the band is there for).

Swap out bras on a semi-regular basis. Experts agree that, on average, you should buy a new bra every six months. Like your favorite shoes, they wear out and stretch out with frequent use, explains Pfister, adding that clear signs a bra has run its course include slipping straps, a “double bubble” at the cup, frayed edges, exposed underwires, and, of course, not getting as much lift as you once did. To get the most use out of your bra, you’ll want to maintain a whole lingerie wardrobe: Because fibers need enough time to rest and pull back after every wear to maintain functionality, it’s recommended to alternate between bras. (Cohen recommends having at least three in regular rotation.)

Consider your breast shape. When shopping for a new bra, Lewis says it’s important to think about not only the size of your bust, but also the shape of your breasts. If your boobs are teardrop-shaped, for instance, a demi or balconette style might offer you a good fit; if they’re round, a plunge or triangular-shaped silhouette might feel more supportive, as it pulls the breast tissue in on the sides. If you have a full bust, unlined bras are typically the most comfortable as they “round out the shape of the breast and have a flattening effect,” according to Lewis. Here’s a helpful breakdown of some of the different breast types.

Think about fabrics. It’s a myth that heavy, industrial-feeling bras are the only supportive lingerie option when you have big boobs. Brands are finally (finally!) experimenting with a range of fabrics, like lace and mesh, that don’t sacrifice comfort or structure for larger busts. The secret is making sure that the bra, regardless of what it’s made of, provides good wing support—in other words, that the fabric panels on the sides of the bra (the ones that connect the cups to the clasp in the back) are strong and well-designed, so that they can hold up a larger bust. Other design considerations to look for include: underwire or padded cups to add shape and definition; side boning to stabilize the band; interior slings to help with projection and natural shaping; and padded straps to manage the volume of a larger cup and offer a comfortable lift.

Ahead, we lay out the expert’s tips on a range of bra types for various wants and needs.

Sarah Jessica Parker Has a Pretty Pragmatic Approach to Shoe Shopping

“I’ve spent $40,000 on shoes and I have no place to live? I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes!” In case you’re not up to date on your Sex and the City trivia, those words were famously uttered by Carrie Bradshaw (because, who else?) back in season 4 of the HBO series. Her small-screen alter ego may have debunked the Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane urban legend and taught us that good pair of heels can make life a little more fun, but Sarah Jessica Parker is a bit more practical when it comes to her own footwear shopping habits.

Parker, of course, is a shoe designer now herself. (She launched SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker with Manolo Blahnik U.S. President George Malkemus III back in 2014.) She opened her second boutique in Las Vegas, at the Bellagio Hotel, this month—and, surrounded by an array of stilettos, sparkles, and a smattering of LBD’s for good measure, Glamour caught up with the actress-cum-designer to get some insight into how to find Carrie-level footwear love. And though her advice is predictably sage, it’s not exactly what you’d expect from the person who brought to life television’s foremost shoe aficionado. (Spoiler alert: Bradshaw’s real-life counterpart doesn’t share her character’s voracious appetite for accumulation.) Below, SJP explains how to balk the trends, treat color as a neutral, and make every purchase count. Read on!

Glamour: When it comes to buying a pair of heels, what is non-negotiable for you?

SJP: Quality, relevance, how long will it last—I’m actually not the shopper that people think I am. I was probably much more profligate when I was younger, but I never was the sort of fevered shopper like Carrie Bradshaw. For the last ten years or more, I’ve really been making decisions based on, “Is that what I want to wear forever?” I tend to not have these quick one-night stands or affairs with fashion, because it never suits me anyway. I tend to shop, specifically with heels or shoes, for things that I think, “Yeah, this is a long-term relationship.”

Glamour: What exactly about a pair of shoes tells you it might be a long-term relationship?

SJP: I think a single sole is timeless—that’s why we were so invested in this idea of revisiting and recommitting it. The silhouette of the heel says a lot, because you can look at it and know, “Oh that was 1981, ’82, ’83,” or “That’s that court heel that Princess Diana wore”; the kitten heel we know from the ‘80s and the early ‘90s. It’s single sole, it’s silhouette, and it’s quality.

Glamour: Agreed! Speaking of trends vs. timeless, are there any pieces you’ve worn in the past that you hope make a comeback?

SJP: I’ve worn so much! I wish there would always be a really cute jumper available, like a dirndl. And I think every dress should have pockets.

Glamour: What is the most beloved accessory or clothing item you own?

SJP: My most beloved accessory is probably this [wedding] ring from my husband that I love.

Glamour: It’s beautiful! I know you don’t shop a ton, but for women coming into the new store, what are your dos and don’ts for shopping for a new pair of shoes or a little black dress?

SJP: I’m so bad at rules cause I feel like everybody’s so different. The message we want to convey is that color is a neutral, and that we want women to feel like themselves. We want this to be a place where they’re given permission to do the thing that they’ve been waiting for someone to tell them they can do—as I’ve said countless times, you’re just as capable wearing a pair of vibrant violet pumps as you are wearing black pumps. You’re just as authoritative, as much in control, and as intellectually challenging, interesting, and smart as you are in a pair of black pumps. Men wear all sorts of colored ties and nobody questions their appropriateness or whether they’re whimsical and silly or to be diminished; it’s just a way of saying, “This is what I wanted to do today. This is who I feel like today. This is the story I wanted to tell.” We want to tell women that [their choice of footwear] doesn’t speak for their most important inner life, but rather it tells a story—this is an opportunity to express themselves. I think the thing that’s most compelling about other people is when you don’t look like you’re trying to dress like your friend, colleague, neighbor, or anything else. That’s a very arresting and exciting and compelling quality to possess—not everybody has the courage to walk out the door feeling like themselves, but once they do, it’s thrilling to witness.

Glamour: So what are you thinking about when you’re designing?

SJP: There’s a lot that goes into the process because we of our retail partners: We’re looking at what sells and what doesn’t, what’s surprising and what’s disappointing, and what are areas we want to reinvest in, even if they don’t sell. But [designing], in many ways, is just about being creative and inspired. [Malkemus] and I do a lot of research: Whether it’s [looking back to] the 1800’s or [to] what people were wearing in Japan in 1981 or shoes I see on the subway or old images from an Italian magazine, there’s a whole host of things that are inspiring to us. We’re doing this three or four times a year. We’re looking at the new suedes, fabrications, fishnets, or glow material; [asking] what do we want to build, and what do we want to create, what prints do we want to work on? There’s a lot that goes into it, but it’s fantastic!

Glamour: Are there staples you think every woman should have in her closet, shoes, or dresses?

SJP: I think women should have what they determine to be a staple in their closet, [because] who’s to say that my staple is someone else’s staple? I’m this tall, and I live in this city, and I have to walk the kids to school, and I don’t tend to drive as much—my life requirements are radically different than yours or hers or his. Staples are: What do you need? And then, what do you want? Need comes first, typically; want gets taken care of occasionally.

Glamour: We will always love Carrie from Sex and the City. Have any her looks inspired your designs for SJP Collection?

SJP: I think the whimsy, and some of the things that are more decadent and indulgent are obviously inspired by her. Our little black dress is based on the title sequence [of the show]. Our Windsor and Mary [styles], which are the shoes with the buckle in front, are inspired by that famous blue [Manolo Blahnik] Hangisi—but the rest is a nod to an idea, not a specific [person].

Glamour: Do you have a favorite Carrie Bradshaw look of all time?

SJP: There’s too many! I don’t remember 80% of them. I’ve worn so many costumes. I don’t think as much about fashion and all that as everyone thinks!

Glamour: Carrie’s closet was filled with “going-out” heels, and obviously Las Vegas is a going-out town. Which shoe in here would you choose for a night out?

SJP: There’s not one shoe in here that I would say is “the shoe.” They’re all “the shoe”! It depends. Did you just break your foot and you can’t wear heels? Do you like color? Do you like ornamentation? Do you like sparkle? Do you like something that is simple? Right now, I’m wearing this, but I might wear that later—there’s not one. It’s all right for who are you.

Glamour: Is there such a thing as having too many shoes, or is that not possible?

SJP: Maybe for some, but not for others. Some people exist with two pairs of shoes, and that’s perfect and right for their lives… I don’t have a whole lot of shoes. I borrow a lot of shoes, which is a really wonderful thing I’m very grateful for. I think having things that you’re not wearing seems silly—I’m not sure that accumulation is as fulfilling as people expect it to be. Having something you really love and care about [though], or having a few things that you really love and care about, is pretty great.

Glamour: Maybe that’s the best tip to the shopper—really making sure you love what you’re buying.

SJP: Yeah—more often than not, those are hard-earned dollars for that customer, and you want them to wear it and enjoy it and really love it. It has a place in their life. One pair of shoes can go on a lot of adventures!

5 Tips That'll Make Shopping for Vintage Levis Less Intimidating

Thanks to a renewed interest in secondhand denim, most thrifting trips end up feeling like a scavenger hunt for the perfect pair of vintage Levis. Hey, the brand has been around for over a century—it’s safe to say it’s learned a thing or two about making good denim along the way. Whether you prefer your 501’s fresh from the store or would rather get them already lived in (or from Re/Done, which falls somewhere in between), the silhouette remains one of the most enduring jean styles in the public imagination—and certainly in the fashion sphere: Anne-Laure Mais of Adenorah (pictured), Leandra Medine of Man Repeller, and Tara Belle of Miss Tara Belle have all been photographed in the fit, whether the jean in question is new or vintage.

Unsurprisingly, these sightings result in serious inquiries from shoppers. Searchers for “Vintage Levi’s” on Lyst have gone up 48% from 2016 to 2017, and make up between 15-25% of all vintage-related queries on Lyst every month, according to the platform. On the resale site Poshmark, this specific type of denim also perform quite well: “Last month, Poshmark Seller Stylists listed thousands of vintage Levi’s on the platform; in parallel, we’re also seeing high demand for this category—[they] have a 50 percent sell-through rate… that’s one out of every two pairs,” says Kate Franco, the company’s Senior Director of Merchandising.

Given the pervasiveness of vintage Levi’s on the ‘gram, you’d think it would be easier to find that perfect pair—but the process actually requires a bit of research (and a few fit tests along the way). What if you want a looser fit without having it be too bulky, or maybe you want the lived-in look but still have your jeans hug your figure just so? To get to the bottom of finding our match made in denim heaven, we asked some experts for their vintage Levi’s shopping tips. Read on!

Start With the Classic
Even if you’re not super familiar with the history of Levi Srauss & Co., odds are you know the brand’s 501 jeans. (They even have a dedicated tab on the brand’s website.) This original silhouette, with its signature button fly and legendary durability, is a recurring favorite on the secondhand market—partly because the style hasn’t really changed that much since it was introduced in 1873, so you know what you’re getting. For shoppers just embarking on their vintage denim journey, Hideya Sagawa, the store manager at Brooklyn’s Front General Store, usually starts with the 501: “We talk [with customers] and sometimes suggest to try some vintage pairs, always starting with 501’s,” she explains.

Educate Yourself on the Different Styles
Ah, but the 501 is only the beginning! Shannon Parker of What Goes Around Comes Around explains that while the 501 is perhaps the most classic and universally beloved of the silhouettes, there are plenty of others that are just as desirable: There’s the 505 zipper, which has “a tighter fit through the hips and legs,” and the 646 bell-bottoms, which date back to the 1970s and are “fitted in the hips and thighs with a wide flare at the bottom.” What’s more, it’s important to note what era the style you’re eyeing is from: According to Sagawa, Levi’s 501s from the 1960s differ from those dating back to the 1980s in terms of how they fit, as the brand shifted away from work wear and more towards a fashion piece.

Understand What Goes Into Your Denim
Levi’s has earned its reputation as a foremost purveyor of denim partly because of the durability of its jeans. Nowadays, the brand groups its denim into three tiers: good (which is sold at retailers like Macy’s), better (styles stocked at its brick-and-mortar outposts), and best (jeans from its Vintage and Made & Crafted lines). That last category draws from the company’s archive and picks out the most beloved features of its vintage styles, according to Michael Glasmacher, a manager at Levi’s Meatpacking District store in New York—with durability and make being the most important features in the “best” category. “These jeans are constructed to withstand wear and tear,” he says. Understanding the popularity of the brand in the secondhand market, Levi’s also sells styles crafted out of its own vintage denim in its stores; these are called Lot, Stock, and Barrel jeans—and, if you want that authentic vintage feel without necessarily sifting through the infinite racks of denim at the thrift store, they’re a pretty good bet.

Forget “Traditional” Sizing
If you really want to find that perfect fit, you needn’t concern yourself with traditional sizing, according to our experts. “It’s very important to realize that vintage Levis don’t have stretch like most of the modern jeans and that sizing can be misleading,” says Parker. “Know that the original tag size has most likely shrunk a size or two.” (Another thing to keep an eye out, according to Sagawa, is whether the style you’re trying on is a “student cut,” as those tend to be narrower around the hips than the traditional “adult” sizes.) Parker explains that at What Goes Around Comes Around, stylists “measure the exact actual waist size of the jean to fit you properly”—so, make sure to make note of that number when browsing.

Don’t Be Afraid to Talk to Someone
Even if you’re “just browsing,” it might be worth actually talking to a salesperson to find your match. “Our expert stylists are always there to advise on the perfect fit for the client’s body type,” says Parker; they’ll help you figure out how your preferred fit and look translates to the Levi’s archive—in the case of What Goes Around Comes Around, they literally have thousands of pairs on hand, so make sure to ask!
