How 'Life in Pieces' Is Tackling Pregnancy With a Realness Rarely Seen on Sitcoms

A woman pooping during childbirth isn’t something you expect to see on television. It’s definitely not something you expect to see on a network comedy. In fact, there’s only one sitcom I can think of that’s done it: Life in Pieces, when it premiered on CBS in 2015. “I got a lot of feedback from that episode,” Zoe Lister-Jones tells Glamour of the scene where her character, Jen, gives birth. “It was so unabashedly real about what labor is really like…the things that don’t get talked about. I have to say, my friends really loved seeing that.”

Now in its fourth season—which premieres today—the show’s executive producer and writer Barbie Adler want to keep that moment going, by continually showing the humor in these very real situations. A lot of that comes from Jen’s storyline. She’s pregnant again—and though she’s been on this journey before, there’s plenty of new material Adler wanted to explore.

“There’s an episode about food sensitivities and smells for Jen, and I went through it with my husband,” Adler says. She drew from her own pregnancy for the episode; for a time, she couldn’t be around her spouse, Life in Pieces creator Justin Adler, because she was so sensitive to smell. “That’s just a miserable part of pregnancy, and it can last a long time. It causes tension in a relationship. The woman is pregnant, but the partner feels pressures as well and obviously he can’t quite voice that when she’s vomiting on the floor.”

Zoe Lister-Jones stars opposite Colin Hanks on Life in Pieces.

Other topics this season include a leaky bladder, hot flashes, and what happens when a relative walks in on an exposed breast. “They’re just about as real as it gets,” Adler says of the storylines. “Jen has a really strong sense of humor about the circumstances. You’ve got no choice but to go with it when you sneeze or cough and pee comes out. Those things happen!”

It’s also why, four seasons in, Lister-Jones is still loving the role of Jen. “There’s a lot of truth to what we’re playing,” she says. “The more that these parts of women’s lives are represented authentically, the better. Telling the realities of pregnancy or motherhood or marriage in a way that feels relevant and unapologetic is always exciting.”

And as long as the audience keeps tuning in, Adler is happy to draw from her own life to make women feel less alone. “You want to feel what you’re writing is funny but can connect to people. I had miserable pregnancies. During each one there wasn’t a moment where I felt it was beautiful and my body was changing in a wonderful way,” she says, laughing. “I had seen so many portrayals of perfect pregnancies, and I was like, ‘No, that’s not what happened to me.’ It’s gratifying to know I wasn’t the only person that went through that.”

Birth class and delivery simulation

“There’s so many ways that people are making their families,” executive producer and writer Barbie Adler says. “It was important for me to show the different experiences.”

Erik Voake/CBS

It’s also why Adler and the team are excited to give a voice to women—and men—who are experiencing fertility issues. Colleen and Matt (played by Angelique Cabral and Thomas Sadoski) explore adoption this season, among other twists and turns in their journey to parenthood. “There’s so many ways that people are making their families,” Adler says. “For some people it comes with such ease, while others have had heartache for five or 10 years. It was important for me to show the different experiences and finding the light at the end of the tunnel, even if the tunnel keeps getting blocked by a boulder. You just keep finding options. Most important, these couples have each other to get them through it.”

The Bachelor Season 23, Episode 5 Recap: Elyse Just Did Something We Rarely See

Caution: Spoilers for The Bachelor ahead.

We’re in Thailand for this week’s episode of The Bachelor, but we don’t get to see any of this beautiful country because the camera will not stop focusing on Colton’s abs. Honestly, the scene of him showering outside went on so long I thought the only drama we’d see this episode would be whether or not there’s enough soap.

Eventually, finally, we move on to “Never Been Kissed” Heather’s one-on-one date with Colton. They take a boat out to a floating island, while Heather assures us, repeatedly, that she would like to kiss Colton at some point today. But, yikes, this date. It basically consists of Heather watching Colton eat. She doesn’t want to bring up the whole kissing thing to him because, “I really hate talking about things that are going on.” What an insane thing to say. You hate talking about things that are going on? What are things that aren’t going on? Unicorns? Pigs flying? A watchable Super Bowl halftime show?

Instead, they just stare into the sunset while she repeatedly goes, “Mmmm.” (Are they having fun? What is this date?)

Meanwhile, back at the resort, Elyse is feeling “heartbroken” over seeing Colton go on date after date with other women. Did she know she signed up for The Bachelor? She wants more validation that he’s on the same page, which, fair. And what a perfect time for the group date card to arrive. It’s addressed to Demi, Caelynn, Hannah B., Sydney, Tayshia, Kirpa, Onyeka, Nicole, Hannah G., and Elyse. That means Cassie gets the one-on-one. Elyse cries.

That night, Colton tells Heather he had “an absolute blast” and she “blew it out of the water.” How and why? Did they cut all the footage that showed these two enjoying themselves? I know The Bachelor is not the realest reality show out there, but this feels…forced. Anyway, Colton asks Heather about her past relationships and TL;DR she dated a guy for eight months and they never kissed. Even Colton, our Virgin Bachelor, is like, “Excuse me, ma’am. What?” Then Colton says he’s concerned that she hasn’t kissed anyone, which puts Heather in the awkward position of insisting that she’s ready and hasn’t been waiting this whole time for some “magical moment.”

So Colton gives her the rose, and they walk to a beach where they kiss for the first time beneath some fireworks. After, the show wastes no time changing Heather’s nickname to “Has Been Kissed.” Bless.

Heather returns to the women’s suite and tells everyone what happened. Watching Elyse, 31, do her best to maintain a neutral face while Heather, 22, describes being kissed for the first time is my most favorite thing. Then, while Heather’s still talking, Elyse just gets up and walks out of the room. Nobody knows what’s going on, but they all agree that she looked “really good” in her “statement dress.” Co-sign.

Elyse heads straight to Colton’s room to tell him that she wants all the time and attention a real relationship deserves. They have a heart-to-heart, during which Elyse admits she could never accept a proposal after sharing him with other women. “You want something that I can’t promise,” she says. (So much better than “I hate talking about things that are going on.”)

Again, I’m not totally sure what show Elyse thought she was signing up for—but there was something amazing about seeing a women on this show know what she is worth. So much so that she’s willing to remove herself from a relationship that isn’t delivering. Colton, however, is confused why she “gave up” on their relationship. I guess he wasn’t listening at all.

Celebrities Who Rarely Show Their Curly Hair

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/5a0784046d8bf441f638a62a/master/pass/salma%20hayek.jpg” alt=”Salma Hayek“/>

Salma Hayek’s been experimenting with a few colorful wigs lately, but she’s typically photographed with her mid-length, dark brown hair blown-out or straightened. Until now: She showed off her natural curls in a selfie on Instagram—and her followers fell in love with them. “Crazy hair day. A veces mi cabello se vuelve loco ?,” she captioned the post, which translates to “sometimes my hair goes crazy.” Please. It looks great.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/599200ae0701570c3f4c137d/master/pass/kerry-washington.png” alt=”Kerry Washington“/>

Washington’s worn her hair all sorts of ways, but where she’s most often spotted with a sharp bob or glossy waves, this weekend she went curly to an event in LA. Casual glam on a Sunday, as only Washington could.

Grande’s taken a stand for her go-to pony and half-up half-down style, so glimpses of her born-with-’em curls are all the more exciting. Those soft, gorgeous waves, that vogueing—it’s a match made in heaven.

    Sarah Hyland

You wouldn’t know it from the Modern Family star’s red carpet appearances—where she usually wears her hair in blown-out waves—but when Hyland’s off-duty, we often get to see her incredible natural curls, as spotted here.

Henson’s shiny, angled Empire bob is iconic, but her magnificent kinks came out to play this year, and the world hasn’t been the same. The story behind them is just as good: Per her hairstylist, Tym Wallace, after wrapping her latest movie, Henson wanted to go all or nothing to help her curls thrive. “She’s showing that she’s all for black-girl magic,” he said. “Showing these young black girls that you are not defined by what society paints as beautiful when it comes to a black woman and her hair.”

Sightings of Joan Smalls’ natural hair texture are few and far between, but when she posted this shot and captioned it “#WBW Natural,” the heart emojis poured in. If you’re not currently a teen or an incredibly hip model, that stands for “way back when.” We looked it up.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598dc8a3f11fd00de6733a2f/master/pass/lorde-brixton-curly-getty.jpg” alt=”Lorde “/>

After years of being curly, for a bit there Lorde was sticking with smoother waves and shiny blowouts (her choice, but we were bummed to see them less). But lately she’s been bringing back her corkscrews, both in their defined form and gorgeously frizzed-out state.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598bc51462e26f7ab4d52ed4/master/pass/gabrielle-union-curls-instagram.jpg” alt=”Gabrielle Union“/>

With the launch of her new hair care line, Flawless by Gabrielle Union, the actress has been on a curl kick recently and embracing her natural texture. And fingers crossed it never, ever ends, because seeing Union’s kinks is even more gut-punch beautiful than looking at her skin. (How is she 44? How. How?!)

Instagramming in Venice with her daughter, Luna, Teigen gave a rare glimpse at her texture. Peeking out from a turban, it could be because the coastal humidity isn’t worth fighting, but we’re still hoping we see more when she’s back in L.A.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598bc07012a66a31d0a34475/master/pass/laverne-cox-curly-instagram.jpg” alt=”Laverne Cox“/>

Cox never ceases to be an inspiration, and her comment on finally accepting her hair is so good. “Wearing my hair natural with its beautiful kink and curl on the daily is a bit too much work for me. I usually opt for protective styles, wigs, and hairpieces for my everyday styles,” she captioned the photo on Instagram. “But when we did this shoot, this is the look I was most excited about. I haven’t relaxed my hair since 2011. My natural hair journey continues, and I want to celebrate that as much as the other looks we rock. I also want to celebrate my natural hair sisters. I love you!”

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598dce33f11fd00de6733a31/master/pass/rita-ora-youtube-curly-getty.jpg” alt=”Rita Ora“/>

Ora’s curl story is the hair equivalent of the quote “I fell in love like you would fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.” She wore her hair straight for years, but ever since snapping a rare shot of her natural texture a few months ago, they’ve been making a few more appearances. A love story for the ages (us and her curls—Ora’s hair relationship is her own).

    Rob Kim

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598dcd0a73e5c76b06a01f25/master/pass/jenny-slate-independent-spirit-getty.jpg” alt=”Jenny Slate“/>

Slate’s gone long on her relationship with her hair before, and her take is incredibly relatable for anyone who’s felt conflicted about embracing their texture. She still often tends to go for straight looks for the red carpet, so when she popped up with this updo, we couldn’t look away.

    Jeff Kravitz

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598bc071edc95a74f61823e4/master/pass/troian-bellisario-curly-instagram.jpg” alt=”Troian Bellisario“/>

After years on years of smoothly coiffed waves as Spencer Hastings on PLL, Bellisario’s naturally curly hair made a reappearance for the debut of her new movie. The reaction: pure ?.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598bc06cedc95a74f61823e0/master/pass/vanessa-hudgens-curly-instagram.jpg” alt=”Vanessa Hudgens“/>

Hudgens typically wears her hair in smooth, shiny waves, but her less coiffed curls still come out every once in a while.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598de81f0701570c3f4c1307/master/pass/halle-berry-oscars-curly-instagram.jpg” alt=”Halle Berry“/>

As someone who’s been famous for about 30 years now, Berry’s stood by her pixie cut through thick and thin (and looked excellent while doing it). But at this year’s Oscars, she turned up with an incredible, breath-taking ’fro. While most of her looks since then have stayed in wavy territory, the curl sighting was one of the most exciting parts of the night. Say what you will about the card mix-up.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/598bc0707f927d5729f57ff3/master/pass/leona-lewis-curly-instagram.jpg” alt=”Leona Lewis “/>

After doctors told her she had an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s disease, Lewis decided to take her beauty routine to a stripped down, natural place and champion her natural texture. She’s written that meant rebelling against what the world perceives as “polished,” but clearly, the world didn’t know what it was talking about.
