12 TV Shows and Movies to Watch the Week of April 12, 2020


Not to sound like a broken record, but we’re entering into another week of self-isolation and social distancing because of the coronavirus. TV shows and movies are how I’m personally getting through it, and I know I’m not alone. Thankfully, a whole new slate of interesting content is premiering this week that should help diversify your queue. From a new, Love Is Blind-esque reality show to a bonus Tiger King episode, you’re set for the next seven days.

Sunday, April 12

Barefoot Contessa: Cook Like a Pro: Start your morning off with the queen of comfort food (and cocktails, apparently). 7 A.M. ET on Food Network

Insecure: Season four is finally here! 10 P.M. ET on HBO

Killing Eve: AMC and BBC America knew the world needed something to look forward to right now, so they moved up the season three premiere of Killing Eve to tonight. At last, some happiness. 9 P.M. ET on AMC/BBC America

The Tiger King and I: A new one-off episode of the true-crime series which features new interviews from Tiger King‘s supporting cast. Streaming on Netflix

The Rhythm Section: This movie, in which Blake Lively plays a woman on a mission of revenge after her family dies in a tragic plane crash, is now on VOD. Available for digital purchase

Wednesday, April 15

Mrs. America: In this true-life story, Cate Blanchett plays Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative woman who fought against the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. The miniseries is filled with heavy hitters playing feminist icons, including Rose Byrne as Gloria Steinem, Margo Martindale as Bella Abzug, Uzo Adoba as Shirley Chisholm, and Tracey Ullman as Betty Friedan. HBO Just Made So Many Shows and Movies Available to Stream for Free


How would you like some very good news heading into another weekend of self-isolation amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic? HBO is making a number of its hit shows, documentary series, and movies available to stream for free.

That’s right: Many of the network’s hits are now available to stream completely for free on HBO NOW and HBO GO—no subscription necessary. They made the announcement in a series of tweets writing, “My bosses want me to tell you these series will be available to stream on HBO NOW and HBO GO for free starting tomorrow: @BallersHBO, Barry, @SiliconHBO, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Succession, True Blood, @VeepHBO, The Wire #StayHomeBoxOffice.”

That lineup alone could get you through a few weeks and includes some of the most iconic television shows of all time. If you never watched the story of Tony Soprano and his mob family and actual family living life in New Jersey, now’s the time to catch up. And we can hardly put into words how brilliant The Wire—which tells the stories of the drug scene in Baltimore through the lens of dealers, cops, users, and journalists—is. Or you can catch up on HBO’s more recent hits, like Succession and Barry, both of which will be back with new material at some point in the future.

HBO has also made many of their award-winning documentaries available for free, like Jane Fonda in Five Acts, McMillion$, and The Inventor. There are also many movies on the list, including Rebel Wilson’s Isn’t It Romantic?, Ryan Reynolds’s Detective Pikachu, and The Lego Movie 2.

This is a pretty awesome (and savvy) move by HBO, and everyone should take advantage of it while they can. We’re guessing you’ll have a lot of time on your hands over the next few days, and at least now you’ll have some new “friends” to spend it with on your couch.

iHeart Living Room Concert for America: Elton John and iHeart are banding together to throw a benefit concert for coronavirus relief. Dubbed the iHeart Living Room Concert for America, the concert will feature several artists who all recorded their sets from home using their personal phones and audio equipment. Billie Eilish, Mariah Carey, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Alicia Keys, and others are slated to perform. It will air commercial-free on Fox on Sunday, March 29, at 9 p.m. ET. It will also air on Fox and iHeart’s other digital, broadcast, and linear platforms at the same time. Viewers will be encouraged to donate to Feeding America and First Responders Children’s Foundation. 9 P.M. ET on on Fox

Amazon Prime Is Now Streaming So Many Movies That Were Supposed to Be in Theaters


Alert: Amazon Prime is now streaming movies that were supposed to be in theaters.

As you know, we’ve all had to say goodbye (for now) to many things we collectively enjoy because of the coronavirus pandemic—from group fitness classes to going to dinner and a movie. Thankfully, technology is also on our side, giving Americans stuck at home for an indefinite period of time so many entertainment options. Netflix! Hulu! You name it.

Including, yay!, movies you’d otherwise have to see at the cinema. The powers-that-be in Hollywood have been adjusting on the fly to a world in which theatrical releases can’t happen, making several new films available to rent or buy sooner than expected. How do you watch these new movies, you ask? The Amazon Prime Video Cinema hub has launched to help you see all the offerings available. For example, you can rent The Invisible Man, The Hunt, or the latest adaptation of Emma right now for $19.99. (Rentals are available for 48 hours.) Pixar’s Onward, Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey, and Ben Affleck’s The Way Back are currently available for purchase for $19.99.

This trend is likely to continue throughout the pandemic. According to CNET, NBC Universal announced that its movies (like Trolls World Tour) will be released digitally on the same day as their planned global theatrical premiere dates.

While the $19.99 price tag may be steeper than your standard VOD rental, it’s not all too different from what you would have paid for a single ticket at movie theaters. Plus, if you have a roommate or are inside with your family, you all get to watch for that single cost.

This period can feel strange and anxiety inducing—it’s something none of us have lived through before. But at least we have a lot of options to distract us by way of movies and TV shows, and that’s not nothing.
