The Beauty Advice Helen Mirren Wants Every 30-Year-Old to Know

Fill in the blank: I love my hair when….

I love my hair when I’ve been on the beach all day, when it’s all salty and windy.

What’s your go-to perfume?

Un Jardin en Méditerrannée Eau de Toilette by Hermes.

Which city gives you the biggest beauty inspiration?

Well, I’d say Rio de Janeiro, but of course I can never look like the women there do—not ever. Not even if I were 20. So if not Rio, then I think I’ll have to say Paris because they just know how to do it. They really are the best at it.

What’s your favorite emoji?

I don’t use emojis. I hate them. They’re irritating and stupid.

You do use Instagram, though.

Yes. But I don’t call it my Instagram, I call it my Latergram because I always post much later, like three weeks later. Or a year later.

You’ve got $20 and free roam of the drugstore. What do you buy?

Probably lipstick and lip liner. I love a lovely red, almost purple-y color. Especially berry colors. I’m always looking for the perfect lipstick. I also love L’Oréal’s Age Perfect Rosy Tone Moisturizer. If you really don’t feel like wearing any makeup—because some days you just don’t want to put anything on your face, right?—the rosy moisturizer is really nice.

What’s your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

A cup of PG Tips, which is an English tea. Sometimes a biscuit, a hobnob. Or, actually, a cup of tea and Marmite on toast. Yes, definitely.

There’s been a lot of talk recently about how women over 50 are redefining how we perceive age—whether it’s J. Lo, Jennifer Aniston, or yourself. Do you think it’s helped take some trepidation around aging away?

Yes, of course it has. But we get a lot of help in many different directions. You see beautiful photographs of us in a magazine, but there’s amazing lighting, an incredible photographer, an incredible hair and makeup team, a clothes team. There’s a lot of work going into making that image. However, having said that, I still think that image is important for people to see. Life as an influential person is not over at 40.

What’s the most pivotal shift in beauty standards you’ve seen over the last few decades?

Helen Mirren Has Thoughts on People Saying She Looks Like Keanu Reeves’s New Girlfriend

The internet started buzzing last week when Hollywood’s favorite actor, Keanu Reeves, stepped out on the red carpet with his rumored girlfriend, the artist Alexandra Grant. While most people fixated on her age and her gray hair (ugh), others pointed out that she looks a lot like Oscar winner Helen Mirren. On Wednesday, November 6, at the premiere of her new film The Good Liar, Mirren weighed in on Reeves’s dating her doppelgänger, saying she finds the comparison “flattering.”

Mirren shared her thoughts after Entertainment Tonight asked her if she’d caught wind of all the people noting how much she and Grant look alike. “I saw that,” she replied. “That was very flattering on me, you know, because she’s obviously lovely.”

Mirren shared some more sweet thoughts about the couple, who haven’t officially confirmed that they’re dating. “I do know Keanu very well,” she said. “He did a film with my husband, and he is just the most adorable, lovely person. So she’s a lucky girl and I’m sure that he’s a lucky boy.”

Those words are high praise coming from a woman who literally had men carry her into a recent premiere on a throne, like the royalty she is. Online, people are freaking out over photos of Mirren and Grant and commenting about how much they look alike. “I wasn’t wearing my glasses at first and I legit thought he was dating Helen Mirren which I also would have been here for,” one person wrote on Twitter. Another person added, “Saw the photos and legit thought Keanu Reeves was dating Helen Mirren. Which I also would have supported.”

“Hands up if you thought Keanu Reeves was actually dating Helen Mirren for a second ? I’m not usually bothered about celebrity dating stuff but genuinely happy for him,” a third person wrote.

Helen Mirren Sat on a Throne and Was Carried to the Premiere of Her New TV Show

We’ve always known Dame Helen Mirren is a legend—there’s a dame in her title, after all. Still, on Thursday (September 26), she made a show-stopping entrance at the London premiere of her new HBO series “Catherine the Great,” and the drama of it all proves that she’s also acutely aware of her royalty status.

Mirren did not walk onto the red carpet. She was carried in on an English sedan chair by four mere mortals. The actress exited before flashing cameras, showing off an ensemble clearly inspired by the Russian empress she plays in the show. The star paired wide-legged trousers with an elegant, square-necked navy blouse. As if that weren’t enough, she added a sparkling black opal and diamond Chopard necklace and matching earrings for some extra elegance.

There’s basically no reason for anyone to ever walk a red carpet after this. On social media, people gave Mirren the praise and applause she truly deserves. “The Mirren out there winning at red carpets for life. Pure sass, loving this,” one person wrote. “Helen Mirren is FABULOUS!!” someone else declared, while someone else called her a goddess. All true.

“Catherine the Great” will premiere on October 21 and includes countless opportunities to see Mirren rock more regal costumes. According to HBO’s website, the mini series is a “four-part historical drama” that follows “the end of Catherine’s reign and her affair with Russian military leader Grigory Potemkin that helped shape the future of Russian politics.” Mirren, who won an Academy award for her role in The Queen is also an executive producer on the new show, so you know it’s going to be good.

Mirren has a busy slate of projects. Up next for her is Fast & Furious 9, which she is currently filming. I really hope she’s carried onto that red carpet, too.
