Madonna Says Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Can Move Into Her NYC Apartment

Madonna is in the market for a subletter, apparently, and she has two high-profile tenants in mind: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The Madame X singer posted an Instagram video on Tuesday, February 4, saying she’d love to have Meghan and Harry sublet her apartment in New York City if they’re looking. You see, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex recently announced they’re stepping down as senior members of the royal family and will be splitting their time between North America and the U.K. Right now it appears they’ve taken up residence in Canada, but Madonna is urging the couple to move to Manhattan—to her Central Park West condo, specifically.

“Harry, don’t run off to Canada. It’s so boring there,” Madonna said in her recent IG video. “I’ll let them sublet my apartment in Central Park West. It’s a two-bedroom. It’s got the best view of Manhattan. An incredible balcony. Buckingham Palace has got nothing on CPW.”

Confusing Canada shade aside (“boring”?!), I’m all for this idea. Of course, this probably won’t happen any time soon. Madonna’s clearly just being cheeky here—and even if she were serious, according to the Daily Mail, she’s required by building rules to be present whenever guests, and even family, stay at her apartment. Seeing as how she’s currently overseas for her Madame X Tour, that’s a problem.

But let’s just take a second to imagine Madonna, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle all living together. As roommates. Would Markle start wearing an eye patch to match Madonna’s current aesthetic? Would Madonna lull Baby Archie to sleep every night by singing “Like a Prayer”? Would she make Prince Harry learn the choreography to “Vogue”? All I know is if this happened, Madonna and Queen Elizabeth II would have to cross paths (again) at some point. I need the Queen of Pop and the Queen of England to be friends.

Madonna Just Responded to the Backlash Over Her Aretha Franklin Speech at the VMAs

Madonna caught a lot of heat last night (August 20) at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards after she gave a speech to honor Aretha Frankin—who passed away last week—that was all about herself. The tribute started off strong—”Aretha Louise Franklin changed the course of my life,” she said—but soon descended into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about the early stages of Madonna’s career. The tie she made to Franklin was loose: Madonna explained that during one of her early auditions, she asked to sing “Respect” on the fly because she had nothing else prepared. In fact, if Franklin’s face wasn’t projected onto the screen behind Madonna, this wouldn’t have felt like a tribute at all.

Which is why Franklin’s fans are so upset. Hundreds of people took to Twitter to criticize Madonna’s speech, accusing her of erasure, cultural appropriation, and self-indulgence. Madonna didn’t respond to the backlash last night, but she just took to Instagram this afternoon (August 21) to address it.

“Just to clarify: I was asked to present Video of the Year by MTV,” Madonna captioned a photo of herself and Camila Cabello, who ultimately took home that award. “And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha!”

Check out Madonna’s Instagram post for yourself, below:

That being said, Franklin fans on Twitter still aren’t letting Madonna off the hook. The responses criticizing her speech are still coming in—and they’re pointed:

MTV hasn’t responded to the backlash yet, but stay tuned.

Ariana Grande's 'God Is a Woman' Music Video Features a Voice-Over From Madonna

Two days ago, Ariana Grande sparked major collaboration rumors when she posted a cryptic tweet thanking Madonna. Accompanying a photo in which Grande gasps while Madonna beams at her in a crocheted bustier, the ponytail icon wrote, “thank you @madonna … u know why ♡.” And now, so do we. On Friday, Grande released her music video for “God Is a Woman,” and in it, Madonna (or at least her voice) appears briefly in an instantly iconic cameo.

The appearance in question takes place around the 2:24 mark. In keeping with the theme, Grande has appeared so far in the video as a variety of female deities, sitting on top of the earth, bathing in paints, and doing an interpretive dance within the cosmos. In this interlude, she’s dressed like what appears to be a female version of Thor, complete with a gavel for a hammer. While Grande lip-syncs, Madonna recites what Billboard identified as the bible quote Samuel L. Jackson’s famously says in Pulp Fiction. “I will strike down upon thee, with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my sisters, and you will know my name is the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon you,” she says.

Although the cameo isn’t as world-imploding as, say, a full-on Madonna-Ariana collab, it’s still enough to send fans reeling on Twitter.

Meanwhile, Grande made sure to give Twitter shout-outs to Madonna, as well as to Imogen Heap, who The Fader reports will also feature on her upcoming album, sweetener. “All women. but …. top five: joan grande, nonna, imogen, madonna, whitney. #godisawomantonight,” she tweeted in answer to a fan question about her inspirations, adding later, “The fact that both of my idols have blessed this project in their own little way. @imogenheap @madonna. it’s ………. unbelievable to me. i cry thinking ab it. bye i’m crying.”
