John McCain—Republican senator, former POW, and two-time presidential candidate—has died after a year-long battle with brain cancer. He was 81.

“Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018,” his office said in a statement. On Thursday, McCain’s family revealed he was discontinuing treatment.

Minutes after the news broke online, the senator’s daughter Meghan McCain, 33, released her own statement on Twitter, writing that she “was with him at his end, as he was with me at my beginning.” She concluded with a C.S. Lewis quote, from the author’s 1956 children’s fantasy novel The Last Battle: “The dream is ended: This is the morning.”

The View co-host has been open about the hardship of dealing with an ill parent. “I’m not the same person I was when my dad was first diagnosed,” she told Glamour earlier this month. “My father is the sun in my universe … He’s the absolute center.”

In July 2017, McCain revealed that he had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer that watchers of American politics know well—the same disease killed Senator Ted Kennedy and Beau Biden, the oldest son of former vice president Joe Biden. Meghan McCain told Glamour she joined her father——publicly nicknamed “The Maverick” at doctor visits, waking up at 5 a.m. for his radiation appointments and had no intention of taking the View gig when it came her way. It was her father who insisted she go for it, saying she’d be “insane to pass it up.”

In Apri 2018, McCain was back in the hospital, and Meghan said doctors warned her it was time to initiate any conversations she needed to have with her father, though she hesitated. “We’ve done that,” she told her dad’s team. “He knows I love him more than anything, and I know he loves me more than anything. There’s nothing else. What’s next?”

Talking to Glamour, Megan also was forthcoming about how she, her father’s only daughter, received no special treatment growing up; the Maverick had been as strict with her as he was with her brothers. Why hadn’t she been given status—a daughter’s reprieve? But his relentlessness, she knows, made her resilient. “I realize now he did it so I could survive this.”

There are a few things happening in pop culture right now that don’t make any sense. Becca Kufrin booted perfect Wills Reid from The Bachelorette but kept Garrett Yrigoyen and his problematic Instagram posts. The Rugrats is receiving an unnecessary reboot. Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” video didn’t receive any major nominations at the 2018 MTV VMAs. Everything is out of sorts, which might explain why some people are having inexplicably irate reactions to the fact that Pete Davidson’s fiancée, Ariana Grande, is wearing his late father’s FDNY badge number around her neck.

A brief explainer for those who don’t follow everything Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson do: Davidson’s father was a firefighter who died during 9/11, and his badge number was 8418. Davidson eventually had that number tattooed on his arm (and, reportedly, Grande has it on her left ankle). He also has several FDNY pendants with that number inscribed, and he posted a photo of Grande wearing one of them to Instagram over the weekend. One commenter said it was “disrespectful” that Grande had on the pendant, writing to Davidson, “No girl should ever wear your dads [sic] chain.”

Davidson was quick to hit back, though. “For [your] information that’s not just some girl, that’s my fiancé [sic],” he wrote in response to the commenter. “She’s the greatest person I know. I gave it to her because she has my heart and that is the most precious thing I own. My dad would be so happy and love her so much.” Grande stood behind the SNL comedian, writing herself, “I love you more than anything.”

But the trolling didn’t stop there. Another commenter wrongfully assumed the pendant Grande’s wearing is the one Davidson also gave his ex-girlfriend, Cazzie David, which led to an entirely separate clap-back.

“It’s so ridiculous that he gave it to his ex and said the same thing…SMH,” the person wrote, to which Davidson replied, “Actually, I didn’t give that to my ex. Yes, she had one but it was a replica. I had a bunch of replicas made. My sister and grandpa also have one. The one that Ari has is the one my dad actually died in and the one he wore his entire career and the one I’ve worn for over 17 years. I’ve actually never taken it off other than for SNL or work. So it means a lot to me.”

Here’s the thing: There are a lot of topics people care about that I don’t (to name a few: football, kale, metal music, and hiking). Even still, though, I understand why people are invested in them. Football is an American institution, and kale is, like, a superfood or some shit. I can even get on board with why people enjoy hiking! I don’t, however, understand why people are so invested in what Davidson does with his late father’s 9/11 pendant. It’s pretty ridiculous he’s had to explain himself not just once but twice.

This isn’t coming from a place of celebrity naïveté, either. Obviously, Davidson is a public figure and should expect a decent amount of commentary about his life and choices. Is that OK? No, but it’s part of the world—and news cycle—we live in. I’m just having difficulty figuring out why people are latching onto this specific story. What Davidson went through with his father is beyond traumatic. Unless you’ve experienced something similar, it’s impossible to comprehend. If Grande wearing the pendant is helpful to Davidson in some way, which it clearly is, then why is that so egregious or terrible? Shouldn’t he be able to honor his father in whichever way he sees fit? And shouldn’t people (strangers, specifically) respect that?

More important, we’re focusing all our attention on this when we could be talking about the fact Ariana Grande saved pop music for the umpteenth time with “God Is a Woman.” It’s a bop. Stream it now, and let Pete Davidson do whatever he damn well pleases with this pendant.

If you’re going to do the G7 summit, political protocol implies that you do the thing. Unfortunately Donald Trump walked in late to a breakfast hosted by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was also ultimately the host of the Quebec-based summit. The Saturday morning meeting was reportedly on the topic of women’s empowerment and advancing gender equality.

The breakfast was shared between G7 leaders—that’s Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.K., the U.S., and the EU—and a “gender equality advisory council” that Trudeau had put together especially for the summit, according to the Toronto Star. It’s the kind of thing you want to be on time for.

Trump reportedly missed Trudeau’s opening remarks and walked in when Isabelle Hudon, Canada’s ambassador to France and co-chair of the gender equality advisory council, was speaking. The sound of the cameras capturing his entrance almost drowned out what she was saying, reports the Star.

Speaking of the cameras, his entrance was indeed captured.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was not pleased.

Whether Trump took tea or covfefe at the breakfast isn’t known. What is, however, is that he reportedly didn’t make too many friends at the G7—which, considering all the global leaders there, isn’t great. Between Twitter rants about U.S. trade and on-the-record statements about cutting off all trade from G7 countries, it was…a lot.

Perhaps Merkel’s Instagram sums up the mood best:

Trump left the summit early yesterday to fly to Singapore, where, reportedly, a summit will take place between Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

Andy Spade, the husband and partner to the late accessories designer Kate Spade, has broken his silence for the first time since his wife’s passing on Tuesday. In a statement provided to The New York Times, Andy called his wife “the most beautiful woman in the world.”

In his statement, Andy says, “Kate was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was the kindest person I’ve ever known and my best friend for 35 years. My daughter and I are devastated by her loss, and can’t even begin to fathom life without her. We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already.”

He then explained that his wife had suffered from “depression and anxiety for many years,” adding that she was actively seeking help and working closely with medical professionals.

“We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling,” he added.

Andy also stated that the couple had been living separately for the last 10 months. Their daughter, Frances, lived between the two homes, which were just a few blocks apart. According to Andy, he still spoke to his wife every day, ate meals alongside her and continued to vacation together as a family.

“We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce,” he said in the statement. “We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how. We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break.”

To clear up tabloid rumors about his wife’s death, Andy added that everything besides these facts is false.

“She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety. There was no substance or alcohol abuse. There were no business problems. We loved creating our businesses together,” he wrote. And, perhaps most distressing of all, he added “…yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.”

Andy closed the message by saying his main concern is now with his daughter. He signed off with, “Kate loved Bea so very much.”

Following the news of the designer’s alleged suicide, women across generations took to social media to share their memories of the designer and just how much owning a bag she so carefully designed meant to them.
