Charli XCX Had an Iconic Response to Her Tampon String Showing Onstage

Music fans know that Charli XCX’s performances are a glittery, high-energy, all-inclusive party. But on Friday night, a surprise guest on her Austin, Texas, tour stop took her show in a down-to-earth (and hilarious) new direction.

In a video posted to her Instagram account, Charli XCX gave a shout-out to — wait for it — her tampon string, which had come out of her costume during her performance. “My tampon string is out tonight,” she said onstage as the crowd started screaming in delight. “Last night I was like, I thought it came out, but tonight, it came out, Austin.”

Instead of treating the episode like a wardrobe malfunction, Charli owned her tampon’s surprise appearance.”MY TAMPON STRING STOLE
THE SHOW,” she captioned her social media video. “HER STAGE PRESENCE IS ICONIC TBH. ??”

Her fans laughed with her in the comments. “Iconic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tampon commander of collabs,” one person wrote.

It’s not that surprising that Charli XCX would turn her tampon string’s cameo into an Internet moment. The singer has a refreshingly carefree attitude — her first hit was literally called “I Don’t Care, I Love It” — and when it comes to her onstage raves, everyone’s invited (including the odd feminine hygiene product).

In an interview with Glamour earlier this year, Charli said that her fans are the type that let her be totally honest onstage. “[My fans] really care about me, and I really care about them. We’re speaking the same language, and maybe nobody else gets that language, but we totally understand. I just feel my music is now a safe space for me to be really honest. I don’t feel afraid.”

So if you take anything away from Charli XCX’s tampon debacle, let it be this: There’s no shame in letting it all hang out. And if you’re not following Charli XCX’s on Instagram, you’re really missing out.

Missy Elliott's Vanguard Performance at the 2019 VMAs Was Truly Iconic

Missy Elliott is arguably the most successful and iconic female rapper in music, full stop. She’s worked with everyone from Ciara to Madonna and has spent over two decades churning out chart-topping hits that span genres and styles. And tonight, August 26, she received a proper tribute at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards. Elliott was the recipient of this year’s Video Vanguard Award, and she took the opportunity to show the world why she is—and always will be—a living legend.

Elliott delivered a show-stopping performance at tonight’s show, offering up a medley of her biggest songs, including “Work It” and “Lose Control.” Alyson Stoner, the dancer who appeared in Elliott’s music videos “Work It,” “Gossip Folks,” and “I’m Really Hot” as a young girl, made a cameo during the performance that set the Internet ablaze. Cardi B then came on stage and gave a speech outlining just how impactful Elliott has been on the entire music industry before the legend herself came out to accept her Vanguard award.

“I promised I wouldn’t cry this time,” Missy Elliott said on stage. “This means so much to me. I have worked diligently for over two decades, and I never thought that I would be standing up here receiving this award…I’d like to thank my mother, I love you. I know you’re watching this. Janet Jackson, I know you are watching, I love you. Thank you for being such a great friend.”

She thanked several artists in her speech, including Busta Rhymes, Jackson, and Madonna for inspiring her. She then added, “Aaliyah, I love you. We miss you,” in reference to the R&B singer who died tragically in a plane crash in 2001.

“Lastly, I want to dedicate this award to the dance community all around the world,” Elliott said to close out her speech. “When y’all get on the stage with these artists, you are not props. You are the icing on the cake. You are the beats to the heart.”

These Photos From Sophie Turner's Bachelorette Party Are Iconic

What bachelorette weekend is complete without McDonald’s on a private plane? “We can’t have nice things,” one of Turner’s friends wrote. “The entire plane spilled their McDonald’s & drinks on take off. Bless that flight attendant’s heart.”

Honestly, this looks like a perfect weekend, though there were two important people missing—the other two “J Sisters”, Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas. Chopra and Turner famously celebrated in Amsterdam ahead of Chopra’s wedding to Nick Jonas, but the actress appears to be hard at work in India, causing her to miss out on the festivities in Spain.

We’re sure they’ll all be reunited for that big second wedding this summer. Us Weekly reports that it’s going to be quite the bash. “Joe and Sophie want to have a huge party,” a source told the magazine. “The decor is going to be sophisticated, but there’ll be some kitschy elements, including a really wild cake. There’ll be a live band, and the Jonas Brothers are expected to take the stage.”

Steve Madden Is Bringing Back Its Iconic Platform Sandals

The year is 2019, but fashion trends would suggest it’s 1994. Bucket hats are all over Coachella. Marc Jacobs’ grunge collection for Perry Ellis is back. Bedazzled hair clips are the biggest trend from Fashion Week. Riding the surge of nostalgia that’s brought all of these things—plus tie-dye, plus nylon bags—out from storage, one brand is reissuing its biggest “It” item from the ‘90s, just in time for summer.

In an exclusive capsule for Urban Outfitters, Steve Madden is revisiting its early hits by releasing two of its most well-known sandals—yup, the sky-high platforms everyone wore in middle school.

The Scrunchy (a slide-on platform sandal, previously known as the Slinky) and the Contempo (a platform flip flop) have been updated with stretchy straps and new color ways. Don’t worry, though: The super-thick soles are exactly like you remember.

Prices have gone up a tad since you last saved your allowance for a pair: The Scrunchy will sell for $60 while the Contempo is $70.

Steve Madden first released its Slinky platform in 1994. Over 20 years later, the brand says that platforms are still known as one of its core styles—and it’s time to bring them back. “Since the very beginning, it’s been all about platforms for us,” Steve Madden (the designer) said in a press release. “We figured now was the best time to reinvent these styles.”

Once upon a time, you would have needed a ride to the mall to pick up a pair. Now, they’re available online at Urban Outfitters. Start working on your balance, then check out Steve Madden’s new-old platform sandals, below.

This Iconic 'Devil Wears Prada' Moment Was Almost Totally Different

Remember that iconic cerulean scene in The Devil Wears Prada? Of course you do: It’s one of Miranda Priestly’s iciest, most savage moments. It takes place after Andy (Anne Hathaway) snickers over a discussion of which belt is best for a shoot. Miranda (Meryl Streep) quickly shuts her down with a monologue about where, exactly, Andy’s sweater came from.

Here’s a clip, in case you forgot:

[embedded content]

Now play the whole thing back in your head and imagine that it’s about her plaid skirt instead of a sweater—because that’s how it went down in an early version of the script.

The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna, shared some intel about the monologue during a discussion at Vulture Festival L.A. this week. We can recite every line of Miranda’s clap back about the origins of Andy Sach’s “lumpy blue sweater” now, but originally McKenna had toyed with the idea of making the lecture about plaid.

“There was a point when [costume designer Patricia Field] thought it was going to be a plaid skirt. I wrote a whole Vivienne Westwood angle—obviously. But there was a sweater, and it was blue. The short version is, they sat on the script for a long time, and I made that script speech longer, longer, longer,” McKenna said. “Then I worked with Meryl [Streep] and [director] David [Frankel] and made it way too long. I sent it to David and said, ‘This is way too long; you’ll never use all of this, but this is what I’ve got.’ I had also sent Meryl a list of blues: lapis, azure, cerulean. She picked cerulean.”

Meryl Streep, of course, nailed the scene, but McKenna said not everyone was pleased with how it turned out. “A lot of the fashion stuff I just made up because none of it was going to be real. It just sounded real,” McKenna said. “After the movie came out, someone was dinging us that it wasn’t based on real fashion stuff.”

50 Years of Ralph Lauren: The Most Iconic Moments

Few American brands have achieved the level of prominence that Ralph Lauren has. It’s an entity that simultaneously evokes glamour, sophistication, and aspiration; but also accessibility, familiarity, and approachability. And it’s been striking that delicate balance for half a century.

For many, Lauren’s designs epitomize the American lifestyle. And the American lifestyle inspired him. “When I started out, everyone in the fashion world seemed to look toward Europe for newness and real fashion. I was always inspired by America,” he said in 2018. “I loved East Coast preppiness, the utility of the cowboy’s worn jeans, American folk art, the glamour of Hollywood, and the rich heritage of Native American craftsmanship. It’s always been there, right in front of us—on the streets, in the small towns, in the big cities—in the way people live.” Those themes continue to shape his collections, from the red-white-and-blue color story for Spring 2018 and Southwestern-inspired palette for Spring 2017 to the equestrian vibe of Pre-Fall 2017 and racing theme of Fall 2017.

Through his various labels, existing (Ralph Lauren Collection, Purple Label, Polo Ralph Lauren, Lauren Ralph Lauren, to name a few) and defunct (Polo Sport and Rugby Ralph Lauren, forever in our hearts), Lauren tapped into various parts of the American experience, from high-end suiting to modestly-priced workwear. His designs were worn by First Ladies and kids in Brooklyn alike. And he’s inspired generations of designers—from Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors to Alexander Wang and Jason Wu—to push the envelope while interpreting what American fashion can look like.

In honor of the company’s 50th anniversary, we look back at some of the most seminal Ralph Lauren moments from the past decades—from the launch of the Polo shirt to that awkward elevator ride with Rachel Green.

We bring you the trends. You make them your own. Sign up for our daily newsletter to find the best fashion for YOU.
